McClaren – Elliot Was Magnificent – But We Couldn’t Play Today

3:54 pm, Saturday, November 7th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 14 Comments

Newcastle now have 7 points of their 10 points in the league from the last four games so on paper we seem to be coming away a little bit and we are now out of the bottom three after a good 1-0 win at Bournemouth today, but we were saved by the magnificence of our number three goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

Rob has never let Newcastle down when he’s played in the first team and today he was by far the star man and without him we would have been buried in that first half.

Two gentlemen of the game

But it was 3 points and we had some luck today and we’ll take the 3 points against a hard-working and unlucky Bournemouth side.

This is what Steve McClaren said after the game:

“We were worried after last week’s game but he has trained over the last couple of days. He was magnificent but that is what you need sometimes.”

“You can’t go away from home all the time and play the type of football that you want to. Sometimes you have to dig in and sometimes there are defining moments.”

“They are usually blocks, headers and saves, and two great saves from Rob kept us in the game and got us the win.”

“Sometimes, football cannot be explained. We have played so well recently but not got the results or scored goals, but today, we couldn’t play football. It was like a hot potato.”

“One bit of quality to get the goal, and a little bit more of that and we would have been comfortable, but we just caused our own problems today.

“Credit to Bournemouth, they just kept coming and coming, played with intensity and created chances.”ย “We worked hard for our luck. We haven’t had it in recent weeks but we had it today and we will take it.”

It was also the second clean sheet for Newcastle so there were one or two good things to come out of the game – but we have to improve a lot if we are to get anything out of our home game against Leicester in two weeks time.

It was a fantastic result today – even though the performance was sub-par.

We’ll still enjoy our first away win since January 31st.

Apart from that 1 shot on goal.

    Elliott: 6 successful punches
    5 saves
    2 clearances

    And more:
    Shots: 20-2
    Chances created: 12-1
    Crosses: 44-3

    Crazy eh

Elliott, Colo, Mbemba thank god were up for it. Real cqptains performance from Colo and im a huge critic of his.

Tiote did ok but received no help at all from the other 3 in midfield.

Our players looked very leggy all game, no acceleration or power, no passing or control, no effort. Lots of jogging but no real determination.

Bmouth were closing us down wuickly, really harrassing us a d then pinging it about lovely when they had it.

Cant remember a game i watched as angry for the whole 90mins, especially one we won!

I think in those games, clearly we cant play football through the kiddle, think it was crying out for Sissoko to go as a 10 to try to get some space to stretch them.

Anyway, 3 points, 2 weeks rest, hopefully we have a fitter, bigger squad for the next game though Leicester will really test us. Need everyone back on their game.

    NB. Where is toonbrother???

    defensively strong today.

thought that going forward we were 4th best at best..

colo had a great game, but how many times can one man be megged ๐Ÿ˜‰

Think its pretty clear we have the core of a decent squad but some real key components are still missing.

Still look weak physically, so many players seem to be jogging around, not really busting a gut to get back, close down, or win the ball back.

Perez has skills but needs to get stronger, especially leg work as he needs an extra yard of pace. Even when his legs are moving quickly he is pretty one paced. If he gets that then he can be anything he wants.

Glad we had Colo today, cant remember how many blocks and stopped crosses he made.

Also we need pace, like Vardy/Bellamy pace, someone who just keeps running and is a real pest. Have that around Mitro, running the channels and we will improve again.

I rather liked “through the kiddle”!

Also cant believe that i would be this happy to have Tiote in the side again. For all his downsides, without him right now we would be walked over in the middle even worse than today.

Colback and Anita are squad filler but we need the Cabaye type to be in there, someone who can defend and attack, pick a pass, comfortable on the ball.

Maybe moving Wijnaldum in there is the answer but then Thauvin and Aarons need to step up and fill the Lw role.

    Thank god we won.

“Cant remember a game i watched as angry for the whole 90mins, especially one we won!”

Agreed and I also cannot remember seeing such a one sided game where we’ve won ?

  • 12 sloveniangeordie // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:25 PM

After today’s game all I can say is that Anita has no place in starting eleven. Today he was worst than fucking nightmare. I hope Colback return soon, he is real miss for us. Until Colback return, i would play Gini on CM and Thauvin on left wing. Florien was very good today and I think he will soon shows everything he can to prove his worth.

Congrats to Elliot, deserved MOTM today. He was brilliant and I am no fan of him. But today he was brilliant. Practicly he saved us today, without him we would be in trouble.

Some of our so called ‘big’ players need to stand up and be counted Sissoko and Winjandum to name 2 . I thought Thauvin looked up for it in his brief cameo
