McClaren – Elliot Was Magnificent – But We Couldn’t Play Today

Newcastle now have 7 points of their 10 points in the league from the last four games so on paper we seem to be coming away a little bit and we are now out of the bottom three after a good 1-0 win at Bournemouth today, but we were saved by the magnificence of our number three goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

Rob has never let Newcastle down when he’s played in the first team and today he was by far the star man and without him we would have been buried in that first half.

But it was 3 points and we had some luck today and we’ll take the 3 points against a hard-working and unlucky Bournemouth side.

This is what Steve McClaren said after the game:

“We were worried after last week’s game but he has trained over the last couple of days. He was magnificent but that is what you need sometimes.”

“You can’t go away from home all the time and play the type of football that you want to. Sometimes you have to dig in and sometimes there are defining moments.”

“They are usually blocks, headers and saves, and two great saves from Rob kept us in the game and got us the win.”

“Sometimes, football cannot be explained. We have played so well recently but not got the results or scored goals, but today, we couldn’t play football. It was like a hot potato.”

“One bit of quality to get the goal, and a little bit more of that and we would have been comfortable, but we just caused our own problems today.

“Credit to Bournemouth, they just kept coming and coming, played with intensity and created chances.” “We worked hard for our luck. We haven’t had it in recent weeks but we had it today and we will take it.”

It was also the second clean sheet for Newcastle so there were one or two good things to come out of the game – but we have to improve a lot if we are to get anything out of our home game against Leicester in two weeks time.

It was a fantastic result today – even though the performance was sub-par.

We’ll still enjoy our first away win since January 31st.
