Newcastle Hero – Team Spirit Kept Us Going

4:09 pm, Saturday, November 7th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 46 Comments

We’re not sure if this is the best Rob Elliot display ever for Newcastle because he was fantastic when we were slaughtered 4-0 at Southampton on 29th March 2014 when his heroics kept the score down to four.

But as for his display meaning something in terms of points – Rob’s magnificent display for Newcastle today got us all 3 points when we hardly deserved even a point.

rob elliot saves again bournemouth

Rob Elliot – saves another one this afternoon

Rob had been very doubtful for this game after he seemed to injure that thigh of his last week against Stoke City – but credit to the medics at Newcastle who somehow got him fully fit for this game.

Their combined efforts ensured we got 3 points today.

This is what Rob said after the game:

“We didn’t play well but that team spirit we’ve been building was there. It was a well-earned victory and we need to build on it.”

Before the game, we had complimented Rob for the way he had played last week with two very good saves – one late in the game when he was carrying that thigh injury.

And after all the work he underwent this week to get him fit – to play like he did was a test of his temperament and character.

Rob came through with flying colors – we are proud of him.

A few weeks ago, i Dont think many of us would have had Elliott, Colo and Tiote as such important players right now to the team. Tiote especially is vital to us until January at the earliest, without him there is no screen at all for the CBs and no presence in CM.

Squad still lacks energy, leaders, determination.

Come on Soton, lets be having a result now..

Temperance ain’t necessarily good for a man – a little now and again does no harm.

You might remember David Bellamy’s advice on sensible drinking……

Two or three pints two or three times a night is ok……

It’s hard to say who looked the more stupid today.

The Coloccini slaggers or the Elliot doubters.

Of course some ,like Mr Tuff fulfill both categories .

So does that make him double dumb ?

  • 7 JDdubai // Nov 7, 2015 at 4:20 PM

I think a lot of us have questioned Elliiott, Colo and Tiote recently. And we are all happy to be eating some humble pie today.

If Tiote gets back to his old form then he can still be a huge asset to us, especially given our lack of presence in CM.

Elliott will always be a backup i think but good to see him getting confidence.

    Jib/Jef/Jane – your all stupid

    Vardy – 9 in 9

  • 17 BandB // Nov 7, 2015 at 4:37 PM

Nice feet-on-the-ground interview. No overblown claims and nothing that didn’t ring true. And thankfully, no hint of complacency.

  • 18 LocalZero // Nov 7, 2015 at 4:45 PM

Thought mbemba was immense today. Wijnaldum was nowhere to be seen tho. Nice to see we can be lucky for a change. Well deserved after so much bad luck. Good tactical change by mackerel going to 451 as that killed off any threat. Rubbish before that mind.

  • 19 Tsunki // Nov 7, 2015 at 4:51 PM

Ray is teatotal not the amount of Rosie Lee you guzzle in a day? Teetotal. Tee…total. Thought you would appreciate the error correction, I know you’re a firm fan of language discipline. Whoops!

  • 20 Tsunki // Nov 7, 2015 at 4:53 PM

Wijnaldums dismal dismal today was worrying.

  • 21 JDdubai // Nov 7, 2015 at 4:54 PM

Vardy 9 in 9, wonder who he is playing next to go for the joint record…..

  • 22 Hail Wor Ashley // Nov 7, 2015 at 4:58 PM

Hull City are gonna walk the Championship much like we did. Smoggies supposed title favourites and just being twatted 3-0, think they missed their golden chance for promotion last season, now gonna languish for another decade.

  • 23 Lindisfarne // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:12 PM

JDdubai – 3:1 would be good. Mitro hat-trick and a consolation from Vardy.

  • 24 andrew84 // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:14 PM

Not sure why the Colo ‘haters’ should feel stupid…he deserves praise for today no questions asked, but he’s had some making up to do for the countless other times he’s been complacent and uncommitted (ducking out of tackles, shying away from strikers etc etc). Or Is that unreasonable to ask from an International defender on £60k a week with 7 years experience in the Prem?

  • 25 Rotonda heights // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:19 PM

    it’s teetotal, not tea!!!

It was great to see a team like Bournemouth play without fear and keep passing, totally opposite to what we’ve had to endure in the last 4/5 seasons. I hope they get safe, although obviously not at our expense.

I think savage said 150 times ad nauseum that it’s no good if you can’t score, but I’d be far more worried if a team weren’t creating so many chances.

  • 26 Jib // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:25 PM

I’m just watching SS1 with Frank Lampard and Jamie Redknapp as the talking heads.
    Aren’t they cousins ?

    sky sports.

    jib aye there cousins

  • 30 stuart no9 // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:37 PM

a great 3 points , however , a stark reminder of how dreadful we are, A relegation performance that looked all too familier. thank god they just couldnt score today . we are not out of the woods yet , not by a long long way.

  • 31 brklyngeordie // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:41 PM

First and foremost will take the result and run w/ it, was it just? No but neither have been some of our results so will take it and be happy.

As for some individual analysis from

Elliot- Possibly best game he ever had and have to say him and Krul are closer then some think imo.

Janmaat- Not really impressed not strong defensively and not fast enough offensively that decision to pass back to Elliot while under pressure was horrendous. The more I see him play have to say Debuchy is better.

Mbemba- Solid as usual where would we be w/o this lad scary

Colo- Decent today but should have been able to hit Cisse late in game on a counter that would have sprun him free otherwise cant complain.

Dummett- I am first to say would have him over Haidara any day but today was one of the worse days ive seen out of him looked really slow today idk why. This position of LB needs to be top priority in Jan.

Tiote-Ok performance had a few decent forward passes still gets caught in possession w/ ball in our own half which is not acceptable but still not afraid to stick a leg, head, body in way for a tackle.

Anita- I am yet to understand what he does well always passes backwards never goes in whole heartedly for tackle needs to be dropped.

Wijnaldum- Went missing for way to long in game but kind of put that on Midfielders and RB and LB for not getting him ball enough cause when he has it is very good in possession and looks to get others involved but no one besides Ayoze is on same level as him

Sissoko- most uninspiring player for me so frustrating to watch. Elliot saved his A$$ when he saved the header in which Gosling climbed over him to head on goal.

Perez- Lad is really something else really hope we can keep hold of him long enough to build around him im sure the vultures are circling already

Mitrovic- Not his best day but brilliant touch on lead up to goal him and Ayoze are an exciting pair and have good understanding already which bodes well as season goes on

Very welcome 3 points. Shocking performance but 3 points nonetheless

Every man and there dog can see how well we’ve played lately but granted not got the points we’ve merited. Today was bad no getting away from it, but why do people insist on not seeing how well we have played lately? Sh1ttest team in the league, relegation certainties coz we played crap today. Does my head in. Got the 3 points didn’t play well no drama really!

Thauvin impressed today when he came in I think, showed a glimpse of what he can offer

  • 33 jane // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:43 PM

have I got to add Lindisfarne to my list of haters for no apparent reason?

  • 34 jasper // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:45 PM

At the start of the season I’d have been very happy to be only a point behind Chelsea after 12 games…….

  • 35 Jib // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:47 PM

    A pretty good summary
Have to say I am heartened by the fact that we seem to be developing into a side that can win ugly when needed , all good sides need that as part of their game.

  • 36 catchy in norway // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:48 PM

sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say they were just better today, but not in every department,

they were at home, it exactly what i would expect from us if we were at home, to be the team on the front foot..

2 clean sheets in a row, i bet its been a long time since that happend

  • 37 Thump // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:48 PM

@Geordieboy83: I think Thauvin was a shite as he’s always been, but today the bar was set so low he shone.

  • 38 croftus5678 // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:49 PM

we was very very poor today !

not all but most players ere dreadfull.

only players who can hold there heads up somewhat are elliott ofc / perez / mitrovic / thauvin others who didnt do so bad was wijnaldum / colo / janmaat / mbabu / dummett.

sissoko / anita / mbemba had shockers imo. we did not deserve the win but saying that we did against some others so i’ll gladly take the points but overall not happy.

  • 39 Jib // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:49 PM

Jasper a year ago Chelsea had won 9 games !

  • 40 Jib // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:52 PM

Butland continuing his good form from last week !!

  • 41 catchy in norway // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:53 PM

    thats totally unfair.

i was impressed with him when he came on, he could have came on and hid, but he didnt, he showed for everything and was a kind of outlet, and tried to use the ball well, he also helped out many times at the back,, i thought he ws more help in that short time he was on than Gini, Gini looked like he had lead boots on today,, not knocking him though

  • 42 geordieboy83 // Nov 7, 2015 at 5:54 PM

Gotta say for me thaivin done more than moussa, and gini today tbh

  • 43 Harley // Nov 7, 2015 at 6:00 PM

    3 people voted for mitrovic!!!!!!!!!

Today we got the luck. We played miles better against Sunderland and stole and got 1 point. That’s the way it goes in football sometimes. It’s a funny old game lol.

I know it was just a brief appearance but I thought thavin looked good when he came on.

  • 44 JDdubai // Nov 7, 2015 at 6:01 PM

Mbabu didnt do too bad?? He came on in injury time didnt he??

Mbemba had a shocker?? Janmaat and Dummett u thought played better than him?? Guess everyone sees it differently as is football but i thought Mbemba was just behind Colo in terms of performance- think he only made 1 mistake in the first half.

Sorry but Colo was excellent today, countless times he cut out crosses and blocked shots. Even Toonbrother would agree….well…..if he didnt disappear after the final whistle anyway, same as last week with our other clean sheet.

Janmaat didnt look interested. The midfield, bar Tiote, were useless. No protection for the defence, nothing at all going forward, just invited attack after attack. Without Tiote today we would have been swamped in there.

So glad we got the points though, it would have been a long 2 weeks waiting for the next game if we hadnt. Plus the mackems lost so that cant be bad, cant see Sam keeping them up, they are soooooo bad.

Just need Chelsea, Spurs and Lpool to win and im happy.

    You clearly don’t do irony…..
