Newcastle Reported Ready To Sign Top Player In January

9:38 am, Monday, November 9th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 9 Comments

There are reports coming out of both Italy and Spain that Newcastle are preparing to sign Manchester United’s out of favor goalkeeper Victor Valdes – and indeed since Tim Krul’s season-ending knee injury in the last International break there have been multiple reports that Newcastle are interested in signing the former Barcelona goalkeeper.

Victor Valdes _2010

Victor Valdes – are Newcastle really interested?

The story that Valdes is close to signing for Newcastle on a free transfer is all the news this morning.

Victor is a very experienced goalkeeper and over twelve seasons he played 535 times for Barcelona and won 21 major titles, including six La Liga titles and three Champions League titles.

And yes – it’s true – after winning trophies every year at Barcelona he now wants to come to Newcastle to win more trophies.

🙂

Victor is still only 33 but his wages will be (very) high and with Newcastle having Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow to deputize for Tim Krul – why would we need to bring in another goalkeeper?

That’s especially true after Rob Elliot’s brilliant display at Bournemouth and when Rob has played for the first team he’s never let us down – but he does have injury problems with that thigh of his.

The update in the story today is that Manchester United are willing to let Valdes go on a free transfer and we know Newcastle are always after a good deal.

It’s also well known that Victor is anxious to play in the Premier League, but if Newcastle do sign him it doesn’t give a good message to our fringe and back-up players.

Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot are at the club to come in when and if top choice Tim Krul is injured – and now that he’s out for the season Newcastle are going to bring in another goalkeeper to deputize for him?

That doesn’t sound right and we don’t think it’s going to happen.

But expect this story to reverberate in the national press for the next couple of months.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I’d let Janmaat go and bring a proper replacement from Dutch or Belgian league.
Bring Vestergaard from Bremen,or Niklas Sule,
Replace Anita with Davy Klaasen or Sebastian Rode, replace Marveaux with Gokhan Tore
    Bring Austin or Ntep.
    Job done!

VV – One year contract tops .
    Lilo
I simply mentioned Isco as a , for example , after RM’s last nights loss to Sevilla , all bets with Benitez could be off , you know what an impatient bugger their Perez is !!!
Isco may decide to hang on and sit out Benitez’ time at Real .

A 6 month deal for Valdes suits all parties. We get an experienced keeper until the summer and Valdes gets an opportunity to showcase himself to other interested parties and earn a deal somewhere in the summer.

Not sure we will go for it though. We have Darlow and Elliot, and if we brought in Valdes we are essentially saying neither are good enough, hardly a confidence booster for either.

Reyan all good players , our priority however is for a player who can put his foot on the ball and have a look around , perhaps Gini if asked has the headpiece to do it , I think thats why SdJ was originally bought , they don’t have to be 6 foot muscle men , Santi Cazorla , Charlie Adam come to mind . Cabaye did a great job of driving Palace forward yesterday teatime.

    Reyan,
Problem is that why would some of those players leave their current clubs to join a side struggling in the Prem. Most of them would get other offers, some would likely prefer to stay put and win titles where they are, and others are unlikely to be available for anything other than an inflated price due to their current clubs needs at either end of the table.

Get gini’s mate in from PSV, Jetro Willems. Move Dummett to CB and then use Haidara 2nd choice

Ive just been having another look on you tube at Granite Xhaka & the more I see it the more I think that it’s him Id want to bring in,if possible. For the older guys on here think Jimmy Scoular / Stan Anderson but with extras. His 40yard + pin point cross field passes could change the game in a flash.Hard player, very skillful, good range of passing and a very’. very powerful shot. A bit hot headed maybe but a leader…and we need leaders!

    nut meg,
Yeah, I’m a fan of Xhaka, I think he could adapt well to the Prem. Not sure why he would join us in January given the upturn over the last month in Monchengladbach’s form mind.

Byram still hasn’t signed a new contract at Leeds, if we are looking at some younger English players, then it wouldn’t surprise me if we went in for him. I can’t see Leeds keeping him and losing him for just compensation in the summer.

I’ll never forget the thighs on Jimmy Scoular!
