Newcastle Reported Ready To Sign Top Player In January

There are reports coming out of both Italy and Spain that Newcastle are preparing to sign Manchester United’s out of favor goalkeeper Victor Valdes – and indeed since Tim Krul’s season-ending knee injury in the last International break there have been multiple reports that Newcastle are interested in signing the former Barcelona goalkeeper.

Victor Valdes – are Newcastle really interested?

The story that Valdes is close to signing for Newcastle on a free transfer is all the news this morning.

Victor is a very experienced goalkeeper and over twelve seasons he played 535 times for Barcelona and won 21 major titles, including six La Liga titles and three Champions League titles.

And yes – it’s true – after winning trophies every year at Barcelona he now wants to come to Newcastle to win more trophies.

Victor is still only 33 but his wages will be (very) high and with Newcastle having Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow to deputize for Tim Krul – why would we need to bring in another goalkeeper?

That’s especially true after Rob Elliot’s brilliant display at Bournemouth and when Rob has played for the first team he’s never let us down – but he does have injury problems with that thigh of his.

The update in the story today is that Manchester United are willing to let Valdes go on a free transfer and we know Newcastle are always after a good deal.

It’s also well known that Victor is anxious to play in the Premier League, but if Newcastle do sign him it doesn’t give a good message to our fringe and back-up players.

Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot are at the club to come in when and if top choice Tim Krul is injured – and now that he’s out for the season Newcastle are going to bring in another goalkeeper to deputize for him?

That doesn’t sound right and we don’t think it’s going to happen.

But expect this story to reverberate in the national press for the next couple of months.

What do you think?
