Steve McClaren is no doubt keeping tabs on the Eredivisie and his former club FC Twente and one of their best players so far this season has been 22 year-old Moroccan International midfielder Hakim Ziyech who was born in the Netherlands.
FC Twente are struggling in 15th place this season with just 9 points from their twelve league games and would be even worse off if not for the play and the goals of the 5’11” attacking midfielder.
Hakim Ziyech – 22 year-old budding star
Ziyech joined Heerenveen back in 2004 as an 11 year-old and came through their Youth Academy and only joined Twente a year last summer on a four-year deal.
Ziyech is eligible to play for the Netherlands or Morocco internationally, and he was called up in May to the senior Netherlands squad but didn’t play.
Last September he announced on social network his choice to play for Morocco, and he has played once for them since then.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has played 50 times for Twente since joining them with 22 goals – and this season he’s scored 7 goals in 12 appearances for the struggling side.
Like most Dutch players, he is known for his technique and he is particularly good at free kicks – something Newcastle could do with this season.
While we expect Newcastle to try to bring in players who can immediately produce in January, Ziyech would seem like a decent signing for us and he could be a target this summer if Newcastle decide to take a pass on him in January.
If Newcastle do bring the youngster in during January, that would allow him to get acclimatised to English football in the second half of this season and be ready to go at the start of next season.
