The conventional wisdom about Newcastle is that we need a top center-back and a top striker brought in during the January transfer window and of these two positions we have to think that signing a player who can shore up our defense has to be the top target.
Newcastle have conceded 190 goals in the last three seasons and we are doing no better this season with 22 goals conceded in the first 12 goals and that average will see us concede 70 goals this season.
Joel Matip – could be a good fit for Newcastle
Clearly our defense had not been good enough for at least three years and we have already been linked with a number of decent center-backs last summer.
But the one who could be a great fit for us and who could also come at a very decent price in January is 24 year-old Joel Matip of Schalke whose contract with his German club runs out next June.
Joel has still resisted signing a new deal for Schalke and the 6’4″ central defender was quoted at around £10M in the summer. but should come for less than that with only six months left on his contract when the January transfer market opens.
This season he has played 16 games in all competitions for Schalke 04 and has scored three goals.
Joel joined Schalke way back in 2000 and is of Cameroon descent and in total has made 233 appearances for them with 22 goals and 12 assists, which is not bad for a player who doesn’t turn 25 until next August.
Hopefully, Newcastle should be able to negotiate a good deal for the 26 times capped Cameroon International who can also play in defensive midfield.
And since we also need to bring in a defensive central midfielder next summer it seems that in both defense and central midfield Joel could fit the bill for Newcastle.
