Things Will Get Tougher For Newcastle Before January

3:30 pm, Monday, November 23rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 108 Comments

Newcastle have just 10 points from the first thirteen games of the season and we are just one point above Bournemouth and third bottom – but when you look at out next three games we could draw a blank on all three – so it could be 10 points from 16 games.

We are at Crystal Palace, at home to Liverpool and then at Tottenham.

It’s difficult to see how we can get many points from those three games, especially if we play like we did on Saturday, which was another insipid performance from this Newcastle side.

joe kinnear 1234

Joe Kinnear – manager seven years ago when we were relegated

Here are the next seven games we have and 21 points to play for through 2nd January.

November
Sat 28	15:00	A	Crystal Palace
December
Sun 06	16:00	H	Liverpool
Sun 13	16:00	A	Tottenham
Sat 19	17:30	H	Aston Villa
Sat 26	17:30	H	Everton
Mon 28	15:00	A	WBA
January
Sat 02	15:00	A	Arsenal

It’s getting just a little uncomfortable with these upcoming games and we think we are going to be down there in or around the relegation zone at the beginning of January.

We have little chance of anything at the Emirates so of those seven games we only seem to have a chance of points against Aston Villa, Everton and West Brom.

In order to be away from the relegation zone before January, we are going to have to win a few games and some of the wins will have to be some shock wins.

One of the problems Newcastle are having is once you get down there near the relegation zone it gets awfully difficult to pull away and in our relegation season we had 13 points form the first thirteen league games – three more than we have today.

But we were then unbeaten in the next five league games with three draws and two wins at Portsmouth (3-0) and home to Tottenham (2-1) so after 18 games we had 22 points from 18 games and were 12th in the league.

Wonder where we will be after our next five games?

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Wdji has been shielded by the fans though he has had some real stinkers as well as good games. Last game he was just behind Janm as worse player on the field.

People like Fergie had the depth and guts to bench a bunch. In fact, we should do the same for the next game; the last two games have been as shocking as any typcal Pards collapse, so 4-5 players should be moved in and I include ex-culprits to be given another chance.

Bench some stars, the replacements can do no worse.

  • 2 ToonMatt // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:33 PM

I can see us maybe getting a point at home to Villa? The rest of the games we will get nothing.

  • 3 hibbitt // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:35 PM

cyprus……….we have no stars just a lot of over hyped prima donas

  • 4 cyprus // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:37 PM

    Steve,
to save you and the kid the shock: when we have the ball, the opposition attacks the holding player in numbers, till he either loses it or makes a hurried pass. Our players, instead of moving into the fray, let that isolated player get mauled by the attackers.

Simple isn’t it? That’s the number 1 reason we look so ridiculous man. Work on it. And try to do exactly that to the opposition. Amazing idea eh.

  • 5 kimbo // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:38 PM

    Next 3 games …score 0, concede 15 , points 0.
Can anyone tell me that I will be wrong.

  • 6 reilly // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:38 PM

december is going to be a total nightmare.
agree with matt only points i can see us picking up are against villa.

  • 7 Tsunki // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:39 PM

    Ha ha ……… pathetic.

Ian Toon opens a door and walks into a large room where a crowd are mingling and conversing. He closes the door and farts. Before anyone realises what has happened, he turns around, opens the door and leaves, gently closing the door behind him.

    What’s that smell, you say?

  • 8 cyprus // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:39 PM

    Hibbs mate
right now can’t argue with that.

  • 9 kimbo // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:46 PM

We have nothing to lose by putting Colo into midfield and putting Lascelles into the team. Send Anita to Holland and put Mbabu into his place.

  • 10 reilly // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:47 PM

b/mouth have a tuff december also,as do villa and the scum,so i carnt see the bottom of the table changing much, which will no doubt give mcclaren some breathing room

  • 11 toon kk // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:48 PM

I was one of a few who said we’d struggle at the beginning of the season. Basically we could do nothing else, we’ve gone back over for a few seasons, selling our best, not replacing but keeping the flops, people could blame Pards all they liked but the truth is the player aren’t good enough. All this top eight rubbish, never in a million years.
we need a massive clear out and start again, probably in the championship, it’s the only way.

  • 12 hibbitt // Nov 23, 2015 at 3:56 PM

toonkk spot on mate but we need to start at the top ashley must go no other way to bring about the change we need once asheley he can take his arse lickers with him carr and charnley

  • 18 welshgeordie9 // Nov 23, 2015 at 4:06 PM

    Tsunki

He’s fine at the moment, although swans not doing well isn’t helping, lol, he’s having his operation in 2 weeks time, thanks for asking anyway mate.

  • 19 Ibizatoon // Nov 23, 2015 at 4:08 PM

Are we at the stage yet where as fans, we start discussing what it is that we can do, or are prepared to do?

Never been a fan of feeling hopeless or watching car crashes in slow motion.

Or are we still resigned to the idea that as fans, we can do nothing?

14 games is the benchmark mates! We will know next week where and about we will finish this season!

  • 23 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Nov 23, 2015 at 4:14 PM

Ibiza…I am all for doing something, but this time I would rather we turned our attention towards the board than:

    a) the manager
    b) the owner

Well maybe a combo between the owner and the board cause I suppose Ashley is the one to kick Charmless’s behind šŸ˜‰ lol

  • 24 firebug666 // Nov 23, 2015 at 4:27 PM

    Jesper / Ibiza

I think that time has come, Jesper you have to go after the snakes head, otherwise he will just sit back laughing while Penfold takes the brunt of the abuse.

    Welshie,

There is not a lot people can say at the moment that hasn’t already been said. We all wish your dad well, and hope the operation is a success, we also know you and your family are having a tough time mate, and we all send well wishes, but I don’t think it’s fair to have a go at people who have not sent well wishes.

Some may find it hard to express themselves in that way, other may not want to keep going on about it in case it upsets you etc etc.

You are in all of our thoughts mate and that’s what matters.

    Chin up.

  • 25 Graeme // Nov 23, 2015 at 4:28 PM

I guess we could probably scrape a win and 3 draws out of that lot for a total of 6 points. Obviously, beating Villa is a Banker!!!

  • 26 Ibizatoon // Nov 23, 2015 at 4:31 PM

Jesper…Which is why I think it’s a good idea to get a head start with the discussion.

You know my thoughts on this. I believe most of Ashleys employees are more of a shield than anything else, so to attack them is to waste time, energy and resources.

If, and it’s a big If, we were to remove Ashley from the direct firing line, it would need to be tied in with a list of conditions (things we expect). The type of replacements would need to really show a change in direction, or what is the point?

I’m not even sure we’re at that stage yet.

As fans, there are ways to make our feelings known now, not after January when it’s too late.

sadly no such thing as a banker for us these days

  • 29 firebug666 // Nov 23, 2015 at 4:34 PM

    Graeme

I wouldn’t count on Villa as a banker for three points, we all thought that for Watford, and then look what happened with Sheffield.

We have a knack for making these poor teams look good.

  • 30 Ibizatoon // Nov 23, 2015 at 4:37 PM

Welsh…As before, I wish your whole family well during this hard time. It’s not easy.

I’m sorry to go further, but you know me, I struggle to restrain myselves at times.

Why on Earth would you make something like this in to a blog argument? Why look for enemies? Take the positives and don’t dwell on it (whether people on the blog have or haven’t wished you well), certainly don’t go looking for trouble, which in my opinion, your comment does.

This observation has nothing to do with your Dad, I really do wish him well.

  • 41 Jail for Ashley // Nov 23, 2015 at 5:41 PM

It’s always tough after a defeat but when the team look like they’ve given up and the managers says we’ve been on a good run, especially after the Bournemouth game, then something isn’t right. I wonder if the pettiness that won’t give the press a free cup of tea is spread throughout all levels of the club.

    Rotonda

Most important thing that we must have new manager before january. Nufc fans in indonesia can only watch the game via tv, and read news in internet. Sometimes we watch the game together at cafe, and get laughed by other club fans because they know from years to years nufc dont change. We hope fans in newcastle can really push the board to make big change, we are big club, we cant deal like this every year, fight in relegation. Howay the lads…..

  • 53 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Nov 23, 2015 at 6:40 PM

Really concerned about how its got so bad we should have beat Stoke by 4 or 5 and it would have been deserved and then we have just stopped trying since !!

I only hope our mercenaries try against their old manager and Sissoko decides to try and upstage Cabaye can just see every other teams fans and pundits loving it if Pardew spanks us 4 or 5 !!!

Then its Liverpool live on Sky at St James’s it could be a massacre like the time we got beat 6 nil …..

Or we could pull it out the bag and start playing again you just never know what will happen!!

    LCBP,

  • 55 andrew84 // Nov 23, 2015 at 6:50 PM

    Jib.

When would you prefer to see the knees jerking then. May 2016?

We’re one third of the way through the season and we’ve won 2 games. One of them completely undeserved. A lucky victory you might say.

Our own head coach has basically admitted that the team is taking two steps forward and three back (that’s progress apparently. I’m no physics expert but that sounds like regression to me).

The players are clearly not performing for the man in charge and seem to have given up already.

Meanwhile other teams are making positive changes to try and get themselves out of their mess whereas we just seem to be making the same old errors.

But look if that’s just me being negative then please feel free to tell me what I’m missing. I’m looking forward to your reply Jib.

Anyone take Gary Monk after he gets sacked this week?

  • 58 Jib // Nov 23, 2015 at 7:15 PM

    Andrew
There does seem to be a dichotomy between Coaching and Managing .
Professional footballers are queueing up to to tell us what a great coach McClaren is , it would appear to be a given.
According to many who worked with him King Kev was at best an average coach but by gum what a man manager .
The best success SM has probably had was as SAF’s coach.
You just cannot imagine SM giving his players the hairdryer treatment .
In a way you can see what Charnley and Carr saw in him but the set up seems flawed.
I think a solution for NUFC is going to involve some swallowing of pride and realigning of job allocations with a personality coming on board.

  • 59 Jail for Ashley // Nov 23, 2015 at 7:15 PM

    Sparky,
Lilongwe gave quite a good theory on why he might struggle elswhere, Sherwood done great at Spurs but struggled at Villa once the new manager effect wore off, I think Monk might have an immediate effect but would be weighed down with Churners and Moncers cramping his style, we need a manager who isn’t desperate for a job to tell Mashers the whole set up has to change!

  • 62 SPRINGY // Nov 23, 2015 at 7:24 PM

we r goin to struggle for points.. unless macca adopts a ruthless streak….if not he may as well walk now coz waiting till jan will seriously ruin any chance of an escape from the shower of shite we are in at the moment….its false economy to think all will be resolved with a few signings….which will not be of any good quality signings if we are stuck at the bottom……get ruthless or get gone….waiting will cripple an already struggling side…..something needs to change.

Your man Colo is being slated by Neville on MNF. Of course, you have never recognised how poor he is.
I identified Mitro as being lumbering and overweight in his first game of the season. It seems many others are now saying that too. Probably not you.
I identified Janmaat as being seriously flawed while others were lauding him as player of the season. Surely that is not in any doubt now?
I have consistently slated De Jong. I’ve no time for any player who can’t give 100% effort when coming on for 10 minutes.
Same goes for Thauvin. What is Makro thinking about in playing this kid when we know he can’t deliver the goods?
I’ve rarely, if ever, criticised Anita or Elliott. The only players who came out with any credit on Saturday.

Signing a dominant ball winning Central defender and a bullish leader / captain (preferably central midfielder) are the moves I would be putting all energies into for starters.

  • 73 AncientC // Nov 23, 2015 at 7:35 PM

I think we should be good for 6 points out of Crystal Palace and Villa. I don’t see any points from the rest of the games – a draw against WBA at best.

Palace are overrated and I can see Sunderland getting a draw tonight – which should give us some hope going into the fixture.

Unfortunately even an optimistic 7 points from the next 7 games isn’t a good enough average to start pulling the club away from the relegation places. That would leave us on 17 points after 20 games.

Adam Johnson and Danny Graham are sitting on the bench for Sunderland, they would probably get into our current side.

  • 85 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 23, 2015 at 7:57 PM

Got some inside track. Cliques in the dressing room. And some players not buying into Makro and Costco.

    SPRINGY
He has before at Forest after 8 points from 10 games.
However this is probably his best ever gig and he still seems to have backing so he’ll give it quite a bit longer

cant see us signing quality players unless we win a few games between now and jan…..i believe he’ll only go when sacked even if we go down…unfortunately

  • 88 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 23, 2015 at 7:59 PM

I haven’t criticised Wijnaldum before. But on Saturday he didn’t turn up. It looked like he didn’t want to know. Woeful.

u reckon he has the backing of charnley and ashley to spend in jan if we pick up no points till then?

  • 90 welshgeordie9 // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:03 PM

Looking forward to tonight’s match, I do like the palace fans, none stop signing for 90 minutes, whether they are winning or losing in the match.

  • 91 hibbitt // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:03 PM

if the fans get on his back Mc will walk well known Mc cannot handle pressure……. as for the others god knows

Any normal well run club, would be thinking ahead, and looking for a solution to the mess we are in.

    This however is Newcastle United!

There was no plan in place when the inept one left, because it was a surprise to the club, still not to worry they had a ready made replacement in Carver for us to enjoy (sorry endure).

I don’t see much of a change in January, Charnley doesn’t like the winter window as he has said, too expensive and difficult to get deals done.

I will expect the worst, and if anything better happens it will be a bonus.

  • 93 SPRINGY // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:07 PM

must be winter every where charnley goes coz hes mostly struggled to get deals done for a lot of transfer windows!lol

  • 94 Jib // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:09 PM

    Blackley

Defo improvement over Carvers last half season .

Insider information about dissent in the ranks has always reared it’s ugly head after a bad defeat since Joe Harvey’s day

  • 95 jane // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:10 PM

how much will Austin cost in January?

I’m sure he said in one of his stage managed interviews that we would not be doing any business in the January window, unless of cause it is to sell some players. He can manage that well enough!

  • 99 Jib // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:17 PM

That was just like the Kent Walton wrestling days.
    A flying headbutt on O’Shea.
Fair do’s to Fat Sam , the scum are giving it a go.

  • 100 jane // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:18 PM

Newcastle will be too close to danger in January to risk no buying.

lining the players up is one thing..convincing them to come to a side that has won only 6 or so games in 2015 is another!….cant see it happening myself.

Makems playing a flat back 8, Fat Sam stylee..

    @firebug

Always laugh at the club lie of “January is a difficult window” we never seem to struggle to sell players !!

Other clubs dont seem to struggle with getting players :

We sold Cabaye Sigurdson was available went to Swansea on loan we did not even bother !

Last season we got rid of a fair few players and Huth , Zaha , Podolski and Wollscheid all were available for loan or permanent transfer !! All would have improved our squad in some cases would have improved it immensely!!

Actually sickening watching Sunderland fight for every ball they are terrible but at least their is effort getting put in !!

  • 104 angelswithdirtyfaces // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:26 PM

The new manager ‘bounce’ effect should be kicking in soon for Macca.
    Our very own Klopp.

  • 105 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Nov 23, 2015 at 8:26 PM

Again whats the point in signing Charlie Austin ?

Can he score goals made by himself ? How can you score a goal if you have no chances created at all?

Perez , Mitrovic and Cisse can finish but the service we have been providing is non existent we bought a striker who can head a ball but never cross it into the box for him to score ?

Perez is great at running into the channels but we never play those type of passes

Mclaren has to ring the changes this weekend only thing is I fear his version of ringing the changes is putting Gouffran defensive mid

I agree with you 100% re January windows, it would seem the the word “success” is a dirty word in the halls of SJP.

When we look back at what could have and should have been it leaves a sour taste in the mouth, and shows beyond any doubt that regardless of the lip service paid to the media the club have no desire to be ambitious.

I know he’s gone now but Llambias’s word still ring loud and clear, “They don’t know how nasty we can be”……

    Well actually now we do.

    SPRINGY

I think we might see a few leaving this winter, (without replacement) the lip service will state it is in preparation for the summer.

LCBA I don’t think it is a particular NUFC lie
    as this graph
    and this table show
Total January transfer window spending, 2005- to date

    ChelseaĀ£163.2m
    LiverpoolĀ£105.9m
    Manchester CityĀ£99.2m
    TottenhamĀ£85.4m
    Manchester UnitedĀ£68.1m
    Aston VillaĀ£41.8m
    ArsenalĀ£39.7m
    QPRĀ£38.0m
    West HamĀ£35.7m
    NewcastleĀ£31.1m
    StokeĀ£26.1m
    SunderlandĀ£25.7m
    HullĀ£23.8m
    EvertonĀ£19.6m
    SouthamptonĀ£5.1m
    Crystal PalaceĀ£4.5m
    LeicesterĀ£4.2m
    West BromĀ£4.1m
    BurnleyĀ£3.7m
    Swansea Ā£2.0m

Sir Alex Ferguson often used to say that there was no value in the market in January.
