This Could Be Newcastle´s Best Team For Crystal Palace

3:29 pm, Thursday, November 26th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 48 Comments

Steve McClaren is said to have made it very clear to some of the underperforming players at Newcastle – which include the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Fabricio Coloccini and Aleksandar Mitrovic – that if they don´t improve their performances they will be dropped.

But it´s likely that Steve will give these players one last chance to redeem themselves with a starting place on Saturday at Crystal Palace – but i they put in another performance like last Saturday against Leicester they will be dropped for the home game against Liverpool.

Steve McClaren Close Up B+W 2015

Steve McClaren – what side will he choose?
Probably unchanged apart from the injured Tiote

We´d like to see a place in the starting eleven for Kevin Mbabu who looked very good when he was in the first team against Chelsea and we think he should come in for Paul Dummett at left-back – if Kevin is fit.

Paul has had two difficult games against Bournemouth and Leicester and Kevin deserves another chance.

There may not be wholesale changes made to the team for Saturday – but after that if there´s no improvement – it´s anybody´s guess.

One question to be answered is who will come in place of Cheick Tiote in central midfield and while we think McClaren could start Yoan Gouffran in that position on Saturday, we´ll give Sien de Jong a chance to play there.

It´s ridiculous that such a talented player isn´t given a chance when the side is struggling so much.

Siem at the very least deserves a start so we can see how he performs – even though he is out of position.

Newcastle are still top of the injury league as usual and we have 10 players still out injured including Cheick Tiote, Sadio Haidara, Jack Colback and Rolando Aarons.

But Karl Darlow seems ready to take his place on the bench and here´s the side that could start on Saturday:

Janmaat Coloccini (c) Mbemba Mbabu
Sissoko Anita de Jong Wijnaldum
Perez Mitrovic
Subs: Darlow Sterry Dummett Lascelles Thauvin Gouffran Cisse

What would your team be for Saturday?

If we still had Gael Bigirimana available we would have given Gael a chance alongside Vurnon Anita in the starting line-up and if Shane Ferguson was still at Newcastle he could have been thrown in too – since he´s starting to play well at Millwall on loan.

Apart from Cheick Tiote,  Steve McClaren could field an unchanged side for Saturday with Yoan Gouffran in for the injured Cheick Tiote.

But McClaren cannot keep picking these players week in week out if they are not going to turn up for the games.

And we´d much rather see players wearing the shirt who are willing to play their socks  off for the team than big-name players who don´t play well and don´t seem to care too much either.

We called the game last Saturday a watershed game – a tipping-point – because we had 7 points from the previous four games and another win would have seen us on our way.

But what happened against Leicester City shocked everybody associated with Newcastle.

A win would be great this Saturday, but we just cannot see that happening.

I not one for stats normally as they don’t paint the whole picture but I recently saw an interesting one on sky a few weeks back.

Janmaat was 3rd in the list for most errors made which have led to goals, Colo is 9th. No doubt Janmaat will be top now after last week…..but makes you wonder. Even without the scapegoat captain nothing would change in my eyes because both fullbacks allow crosses to come in the box unchallenged!!

  • 2 colwell // Nov 26, 2015 at 3:39 PM

Janmaat vs Bolasie and no doubt Zaha vs Dummett once again having no pace at fullback positions will bite us in the @SS, Pards will know to attack us down the flanks. Cabaye Vs Anita what a non contest, Anita our worst CM since Alan Smith (well at least Smith liked a challenge) will once again offer the team fcuk all. There’s no wonder we are in a relegation battle even at their best most of our team are shite.

  • 3 wingspan // Nov 26, 2015 at 3:41 PM

We have to bring Gini inside its mental playing our best players out of position. We should be building the time around them. The spine of the team is the most important!

    Sissoko–De Jong–Perez

Thats what i would go with. De Jong deserves a chance and we have to change the team after the embarrassment of the last match

glad macca has kicked them up the backside and i agree with a lot of things he say’s in his reviews but does he have the players who want to play for him ?

<3 the way the youth are handled as pretty much all have progressed even fergusson who i had written off (apart from sammy ofc) and bigi used to be a big fave of mine so hope he comes back better.

  • 5 wingspan // Nov 26, 2015 at 3:46 PM

Depressingly swap Anita for Colback and Elliot for Krul and i don’t think that is far off our best team!

    Christ were rubbish

  • 6 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 3:54 PM

After this weekend our next 4 games are live on the box !
Do you think the TV execs are starting to scent blood ?

  • 7 Mag52 // Nov 26, 2015 at 3:54 PM

Ed, you say that the result against Leicester last week shocked everyone associated with Newcastle.
I’m afraid I beg to differ. It certainly didn’t shock those who, on your poll, forecasted a loss or a draw.
Who it did shock were those fans, and I’ll agree that there are many of them, who, for some reason, still tend to regard teams like Leicester as cannon fodder for the Magpies who we should brush aside with little difficulty.
Teams like Leicester, who incidently are now sitting at the top of the premiership thanks to that win, Watford, Southampton, Crystal Palace are no longer lower division outfits. They are premiership teams and deserve to be there.
I’m sorry to say that these days we are the push overs. We are one of the teams that look to be good for three points for most of the other premiership teams, and we are likely to remain so just as long as the fat leech who owns us decides to hold on to his asset.

  • 8 chicousa // Nov 26, 2015 at 3:56 PM

    croftus and wingspan,
Both of you have DeJong in your lineups. I agree, if he doesn’t get a start now then when will he ever? Also If SM plays Gouffy in DM as he did againg ManCity then he needs to be shown the door immediately!!!

  • 9 toon kk // Nov 26, 2015 at 4:00 PM

We haven’t got a best team for Pallace, our static lazy bunch of flops will never cope with their pace for a start.

  • 10 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Nov 26, 2015 at 4:02 PM

I have said before that both de Jong and Gini have played in midfield with great success so why not try that.

Take a look at this formation, it sort of highlights the point I have been making. If McClaren cannot pull this on off with his time in Holland then he might as well just stop now:

  • 11 croftus5678 // Nov 26, 2015 at 4:18 PM

    @7 mag

as sad as it sounds you are correct atm imo.

its a shame though if you look at our team theres no need for it to be that way if they all played as a team and wanted to win as i still state we have a better team all round than a fair few of those above us.

still that desire to win counts for nothing if it is not there.

  • 14 toon kk // Nov 26, 2015 at 4:59 PM

MA and his penny pinching and flawed regime has ultimately got us in the situation we’re in, but now it’s gone past that, poor scouting and ignoring our faults have now taken over, which will inevitably take us down. There’s definitely a loosing, lazy attitude at the club, which needs to be addressed as even our better players are going back over.
Relegation is probably what will be required to just start over.

  • 15 catchy in norway // Nov 26, 2015 at 5:54 PM

Nufc to smash palace for at least 4.

Palace will choke simply because p45 will over think his defensive plan.

  • 16 John Tudor // Nov 26, 2015 at 6:02 PM

fraid its a gubbing offa palarse

  • 17 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Nov 26, 2015 at 6:06 PM

I hope your right mate ! But I just cant see Mclaren being able to set us up effectively against their pace can see us being outplayed by Cabaye and Bolasie who both would walk into our team no problem

  • 18 GeordieTwo // Nov 26, 2015 at 6:23 PM

Difficult times. Poor squad. Nothing to offer in defense. A fool at the helm. Sell up Ashley.

  • 19 sparky55 // Nov 26, 2015 at 6:26 PM

If he picks the same team again we’ll do nothing because we’ll be overrun in midfield.

If he changes at least three players and puts 5 in midfield we might stand half a chance

    Mbabu Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett, Hiadara

    Jamaat Sissoko Gini, SDJ

  • 20 toon kk // Nov 26, 2015 at 6:34 PM

It wouldn’t make a sh.t of different what Macca did, the player aren’t up to the job, most of our squad aren’t even premier league quality, that’s where the problem lies ffs, and those who are either lack pace, aren’t fit or don’t give a dam.

  • 21 GeordieTwo // Nov 26, 2015 at 6:51 PM

De Jong has no pace sparky. He appears completely unfit to me. Wants to walk around on the pitch. Perez by himself up front is too lightweight. Strange looking lineup you’ve got there @19.

  • 22 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:12 PM

I quite like the look of that team Sparky.
Janmaat as a winger would work and SdJ has to play where he’s told if he wamts to get a game

  • 23 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:17 PM

By gum Spurs are making hard work of this Azerbaijani team !

  • 24 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:26 PM

G2…you’ll need to give de Jong games if you want him match fit mate 😉

…so what if he’s not fast?

  • 25 welshgeordie9 // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:29 PM

De Jong looks unfit to me

    Ha ha ha

You would look unfit if you haven’t played properly for about two years.

  • 26 sparky55 // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:39 PM

Just my idea of a more fluid team. Mbabu likes to make runs, janmaat can cover and visa versa, hiadara likes to make runs, gini can cover, sissoko in the middle like he played in france for 5 years, SDJ knitting things together, five at the back when we need it, 6 in midfield with the full backs stepping up when we need it, perez at the top.

Anything but what we’ve done in the last three games!

  • 27 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:44 PM

I still think Haidara is injured mate ?

  • 28 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:44 PM

    Ha ha ha

It came up on my device “SDJ knitting ” as a seperate phrase

Everyone needs a hobby to occupy those lonely times on the wing I guess

  • 29 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:56 PM

Interesting stats and this is Sissoko playing poorly as well imagine if the guy applied himself every week!!

I would actually put him in the middle against Cabaye this weekend something tells me he may actually play well against his former team mate either that or Cabaye will totally bully him one way or the other !

  • 30 sparky55 // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:57 PM

    LCBP…That’s that fcuked then! 🙂 🙂

  • 31 welshgeordie9 // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:58 PM

Get rid of sissoko he’s piss pot poor.

  • 32 welshgeordie9 // Nov 26, 2015 at 7:59 PM

My 2 year old cat has got better ball control than our shower of shite.

  • 33 sparky55 // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:00 PM

Agreed…he’ll be dynamite anywhere else once motivated but we may as well use him in the role he played in france for 5 years til he’s sold in January.

  • 34 JamesToon // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:00 PM

    Team we should play imo

    Sissoko-Coloccini-De Jong

  • 35 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:16 PM

Mbabu has to play no matter what he has pace and can defend put him on Bolasie for the whole game and hope he can crowd him out like he done against Pedro

  • 36 toon22 // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:23 PM

    My side

Since we have FB who dont seem to be able to defend we should try playing 3 at the back so.

  • 37 welshgeordie9 // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:25 PM

Just watched the true geordie and his comments on the Leicester game, agree with everything he said, absolutely love that guy, he should do the team talk, he would give them all a kick up the arse.

  • 38 toon22 // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:30 PM

    My side

Since we have FB who dont seem to be able to defend we should try playing 3 at the back so.

    Mbemba – Lascelles

    Janmaat Sissoko Anita Gini Mbabu

This is more defensive and has us playing on the break,we also wont have missing FBs all the time.At the very least its trying to play to what we have .

  • 39 toon22 // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:34 PM

If you look how the scum beat CP they had two players up field all the time which would be our strikers, they shouldnt fall futher back than half way.Janmmaat and Mbabu are the flexibility in defense and midfield we havent had for years.

  • 40 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:35 PM

I think most fans would be delighted if Ashley found a suitable buyer tomorrow and it was all change at NUFC. If he didn’t sell, I think they would also be very pleased if he sacked Charnley, replaced him with a competent, experienced chief executive and that guy sacked the manager and the chief scout. What stability do the current shower bring?

  • 41 toon22 // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:36 PM

Collo is a sweeper in a back 3 as he has a tendancy to go walkabout, this system lets him.

  • 42 John Tudor // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:37 PM

any team that makro doesn’t pick has a chance

  • 43 toon22 // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:38 PM

It just means if collo goes one of Jan /Mabu has to fall back.

  • 44 the broons // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:49 PM

doesn’t matter that theres noone else, we need to drop janmaat! and coloccini! and even anita.

If i was gaffa my team would be:
    Mbabu Mbemba Lascelles Haidaira
    Sissoko Wiji De Jong Thauvin
    Mitro Perez

Desperate for defenders and out and out wingers with pace.

  • 45 the broons // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:54 PM

Players we should be looking at are the werder bremen 6’6 centre back, matip, austin, redmond and other wingers with pace and actually look to take on the full back and whip balls into the box.

Oh and 2 actaul decent full backs.

  • 46 anthc // Nov 26, 2015 at 8:59 PM

Calling de Jong a talent, anita and bigi in the middle? Dear me ed, put the drink down!
De Jong when playing has been a clone of his pish poor brother and anita with bigi would be cannon fodder!
Nothing other than a good thrashing is on the cards with mclaren finally pulling his little tuft of silly hair out!

  • 47 nufconceandfuturekings // Nov 26, 2015 at 9:15 PM

It isn’t rocket science to work out why everything is coming home to roost now, is it? The extra year on Colocinni’s contract – madness. The enigma of why Thauvin was signed. The pudding that is Mitrovic. All very clearly errors to anyone with even a minimal knowledge of signing players in the upper leagues. Unfortunately, the individuals who are running our club – OUR club – apparently don’t possess that minimal knowledge. Of course, we know why Mitrovic was signed. Young. Scope to sell him on. Although, to whom, at this point, I haven’t a clue. Maybe some club even unluckier than us, although I wouldn’t wish that on anyone…except Sunderland, of course. All the worrying signs were there right at the start of the season. Lack of energy, discipline, team work. I’ve supported NUFC, like my father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, before me, all my days and it pains me to endure this shower of disgraceful individuals, with some exceptions, who wear the black and white. I wrote a few months ago that I feared for us and now I feel we are facing the R word. No courage. No backbone. And the tea lady’s left, after 50 years. Maybe that’s why the press journos who attended the Leicester game didn’t even get the offer of a cuppa. A small thing, some might say, but these kinds of things, for me, speak volumes. There is, of course, only one solution. Until OUR club is no longer run as a bargain basement business by a bargain basement entrepreneur, we can only grit our teeth and hold on until things change.

  • 48 Sav // Nov 27, 2015 at 12:53 AM

Can’t for my life see what ‘bone china’ de Jong is going to add to an already fragile midfield, Ed. You seem to have unlimited faith in this lad without having seen him play 90 in black and white.
