Newcastle´s side at the moment seems so weak that Steve McClaren is requesting new players to strengthen the spine of the team.
The former England manager is asking the Board for a center-back, a central defender and another striker in the January transfer window in an attempt for Newcastle to hang onto their Premier League status – and all that big money.
Jonjo Shelvey – a Newcastle target
We were almost relegated last May in the final game of the season and this terrible start this term of 10 points in 13 games is something we certainly didn´t expect – especially after spending £52M in the summer transfer window.
There are at least a couple of problems Newcastle will have in January to attract new players and one is that our league position will not be good and we could well be in the bottom three by then.
The other problem is that clubs hardly want to lose their best players half-way through the season.
And that´s why Steve McClaren´s number one choice for a central midfielder – Swansea City star Jonjo Shelvey – will be almost impossible to sign in January.
That´s even more true when Swansea are themselves having a tough season and the south Wales club are in 14th place and only 4 points above Newcastle.
This is another case of Steve McClaren wanting a British player brought in, but Jonjo himself will unlikely want to move in January.
The disruption could cause him to suffer a drop in form as he gets used to his new team mates – and he is anxious to make England’s squad for the European Championships in France next summer.
Jonjo could be a good target for us in the summer if we are still in the Premier League, but the chances of getting him in over the January transfer window are very small indeed.
Jonjo has played for all the England Youth sides through U21 and has six full caps for his country.
Since joining Swansea from Liverpool two years ago, he´s made 77 appearances with 9 goals – he´s a good player.
