This Is The Central Midfielder Newcastle Want In January

9:34 am, Thursday, November 26th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 64 Comments

Newcastle´s side at the moment seems so weak that Steve McClaren is requesting new players to strengthen the spine of the team.

The former England manager is asking the Board for a center-back, a central defender and another striker in the January transfer window in an attempt for Newcastle to hang onto their Premier League status – and all that big money.

Jonjo Shelvey +Norwich+City+v+Swansea+City+ntFRKqP1a3xl

Jonjo Shelvey – a Newcastle target

We were almost relegated last May in the final game of the season and this terrible start this term of 10 points in 13 games is something we certainly didn´t expect – especially after spending £52M in the summer transfer window.

There are at least a couple of problems Newcastle will have in January to attract new players and one is that our  league position will not be good and we could well be in the bottom three by then.

The other problem is that clubs hardly want to lose their best players half-way through the season.

And that´s why Steve McClaren´s number one choice for a central midfielder – Swansea City star Jonjo Shelvey – will be almost impossible to sign in January.

That´s even more true when Swansea are themselves having a tough season and the south Wales club are in 14th place and only 4 points above Newcastle.

This is another case of Steve McClaren wanting a British player brought in, but Jonjo himself will unlikely want to move in January.

The disruption could cause him to suffer a drop in form as he gets used to his new team mates – and he is anxious to make England’s squad for the European Championships in France next summer.

Jonjo could be a good target for us in the summer if we are still in the Premier League, but the chances of getting him in over the January transfer window are very small indeed.

Jonjo has played for all the England Youth sides through U21 and has six full caps for his country.

Since joining Swansea from Liverpool two years ago, he´s made 77 appearances with 9 goals – he´s a good player.

Comments welcome.

two and two don’t get you 5 mate 🙂

If this happens I’ll put up a big I GOT IT WRONG. There’s no way he will be sold in January, we’re in a relegation struggle, it makes no sense.

Anyway Ed man, hold on to your posts (I know you heard it 100 times), because then posts go by unnoticed – unfair to your posters.

It’s newspaper talk, but I hope he hasn’t requested British players. They do as well or as poorly as foreign ones, as our relegation squad can confirm.

We need players who can deliver passion, skill, effort, leadership and a winning spirit and those characteristics don’t belong to any one people from any nation – sorry to break the news. A sxxxe player is a sxxxe player, simples. And the opposite.

Come on Ed, slow it down please.

  • 2 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 9:46 AM

You are addressing a man in his scratcher in N.Carolina mate.
It’s the small hours where Ed lives.
He does the articles the night before and has them on autopost

  • 3 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 9:51 AM

Why on earth are Swansea going to let him go for any less than 17M pounds which we would not pay 10M of. Swansea have already had him at the bargain price, Mikey does not do non perceived bargains. Van Dyke had already been purchased at bargain price so that made him a no go, although the other signings we made this summer had been bought previously it was not by British clubs and therefore still seen as a bargain ? It is more like an obsession rather than a sound business model.

  • 4 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 9:53 AM

Well why doesn’t he adjust the timing on his auto posts being the Doctor of computing that he is !

  • 5 cyprus // Nov 26, 2015 at 9:53 AM

    Didn’t know that 🙂

  • 6 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 9:58 AM

The club would seem to have a pretty immovable policy on the age etc. of new signings .
Therefore I would expect a few 6 month loan deals this next window.
I also believe Coloccini’s new contract was a panic measure at the end of the summer window when a deal for a new centre back fell through.
A panic measure that has back-fired as Lascelles progress is slower than predicted and McClaren realised Williamson’s best days had passed.

  • 7 beermonkey // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:01 AM

    Does ed watch any football

We need players like townend those are worrying words

He can’t or won’t cross cuts in and shoots all the time and misses

So we need a winger that can’t score or cross and doesnt get any assists but don’t worry he is English and that’s just what we need

  • 8 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:02 AM

    We have talked about this
    It’s a Word Press issue.
It should be rectified soon with the issue of WPv4.4

  • 9 Lilongwe Geordie // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:08 AM

If we just make loan signings this window, how does that work with the 3 window plan?

Also, why did we need to give Colo an extended contract? He had another year led, and we could have told him he wasn’t going anywhere. Now we potentially have him in the squad for a further year, taking up wages and a squad space. The argument that extending his deal was a reaction to a deal falling through doesn’t really hold water to me.

  • 10 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:08 AM

I don’t know how McLaren cold have possibly been in a position to say Collo was the best signing of the summer, he never played in any games ad if he’d been watching him last season with an eye on taking over if all else failed, which it did then he’s telling outright lies !

  • 11 Lilongwe Geordie // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:08 AM

    *year left….

  • 12 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:22 AM

Remember Crystal Palace were dangling a 3 year contract in front of him in July.

  • 13 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:26 AM

Also Colo is also on less salary under the new longer contract

  • 14 Lilongwe Geordie // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:27 AM

So? They would have to pay cash to get him, and NUFC can say no.

  • 15 Lilongwe Geordie // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:29 AM

Sports Pay roll get there info where? Still, £50k net, a drop of £10k or so from his last extension. Still doesn’t make it worthwhile extending it.

  • 16 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:32 AM

So, for arguments sake Palace were really going to offer cash for him,(1) we could have got rid and brought a fresh start in,(2) we could said no and let him go for free next year or (3) We offer him an extension which ties him up here for another two years taking up a squad place and then let him go for free. Take a guess what the ace duo Mikey and Lee opted for !

  • 17 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:35 AM

So if sports pay roll are any where near the truth it seemed like too good of an offer to knock back because the captain is willing to take a paycut. It would not surprise e if Santon was offered new deal but would not take a pay cut, there is some messed up dealings at our place !

  • 18 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:37 AM

There is nothing quite like the PL for .
demonstrating some of lifes little ironies

Remember Sat 15th of August when we got a bit of a shellacking of Swansea City in the Liberty ?

A certain Andre Ayew scored in the 52nd minute.

The usual mutterings on here from the whinging crew started , we should have got him , the board are shite ,mutter ,mutter ,whine ,whine.

Well it seems if Swansea don’t pull their socks up sharpish he’s offmans in January .

What goes around comes around 😎

  • 19 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:41 AM

Yes Jib,you’re men really dodged a bullet there !

  • 20 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:43 AM

I did use the word panic.
While I am nowhere near as condemnatory of the powers that be at NUFC as some , I do ackowledge they quite often could be a bit more sanguine in their player dealings.

By the way it is quite usual for football clubs to offer players less salary as they get older.

  • 21 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:50 AM

If you want to use sportspayroll to have a sniff around players salaries , just put the surnames in the search , it is quite fussy about spelling.

One interesting fact it threw up that surprised me is that Cissé is on more than Colback and Perez combined !

  • 22 Bearsize // Nov 26, 2015 at 10:52 AM

Huge bust up at training involving colo and a few. After mclaren said some home truths. Just been on ssn

  • 23 Reyantoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:03 AM

Cathro doesn’t seem to have a happy face by nature, but what is his main role in the team?
    Defence tactical lecturer or what?

  • 24 andrewsneill // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:05 AM

While i am a fan of Jonjo Shelvey’s surely the simple solution to our central midfield problem would be to buy a winger (and no, i don’t want Townsend anywhere near the side) and thus be able to shift Sissoko back to his natural position of central midfield?

Had we signed Andre Ayew for nothing in the summer this may not have been a problem so far…

  • 25 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:09 AM

There doesn’t appear to be any sound logic in anything they do !

  • 26 Toon-Prodigy // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:14 AM

Skysports reporting about the bust up. Seems to be with Colo and McClaren which carried on from the training ground into the gym.

  • 27 Toon-Prodigy // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:18 AM

Good on him there is a lack of passion I’d say aswell. Lets hope the reaction is a good one!

  • 28 martoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:24 AM

Jib @21 I just clicked on Newcastle United and it lists all the players salaries. I find some hard to believe for instance it has Rob Elliot on £500000 pa but Freddy Woodman & Adam Armstrong on £2500000 which makes them two of the highest paid players – surely not!

  • 29 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:27 AM

    Toon Prodigy,
I think people are going easy on McLaren because he penny has finally dropped that there is something wrong behind the scenes, while Pardew was scraping tenth people would not accept that it was the ‘boards’ fault

  • 30 colwell // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:31 AM

Hopefully the bust up with Colo and McClaren finally see’s Colo benched. I fail to see how Lascelles can be worse than Colo right now he’s younger, quicker, stronger and good in the air he needs games. Lets face it Colo is no leader so won’t be missed on the pitch.

  • 31 andrewsneill // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:34 AM

Personally i’d lose Anita, Williamson, Cisse and Dummett in January with Austin, Eder Balanta, Joel Matip and Lucas Ocampos brought in. Ideally recall Aarons too and get him playing

  • 32 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:37 AM

Are you kets in disguise 🙂

  • 33 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:39 AM

I think it’s just a case of the odd zero surplus to requirements

  • 34 Ibizatoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:41 AM

“At the other end of the table, Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren said: “At least 16 teams in the league are better than us, which is clearly unfair, and the only reason we’re 17th.””

    Happy Thursday people.

  • 35 Jib // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:46 AM

There could be some players out on loan today.
The emergency loan window closes in just over 5 hours (1700GMT)

  • 36 Reyantoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:46 AM

I thought that myself too 🙂

  • 37 Toonfan8 // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:47 AM

We treat Collocini like he is Messi or something like that…No bench him, give a chance to Lascelles and play him instead this slow defender. Also bench Dummet and move Janmaat to RM and play Haidara and Mbabu there, and maybee we will see some fight and commitment in our team…

  • 38 Bambams // Nov 26, 2015 at 11:59 AM

I mentioned after watching Vardy run away from an almost standing still Colo to score that it would be very obvious to a blind manager he is not good enough.
Lascelles has to be played, Colo does well in one game in 10 which will relegate us unless he is replaced.
Sissoko can go to Spurs for me now, swop with Townsend if necessary.
Perez is one of my favourite players but he also needs to get into scoring form, same for Mitro.
Problem is we keep conceding and why we didn’t try to get an experienced GK in when Krul was ruled out just shows how amateurish and tight our board are.
I genuinely believe we will go down this season.
Too much wrong with the club

  • 39 JAMSHA // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:03 PM

    would love him at nufc

  • 40 Lilongwe Geordie // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:20 PM

Sorry, had to nip out. What you say still doesn’t demonstrate any link between failing to sign someone and offering him a new contract.

Also, you didn’t respond to the part re the three windows plan. If we sign loan players now, does that mean the 3 window plan becomes a 4 window? Or does it go to 5 windows as January isn’t a good month? Or do we scrap the plan altogether and bring back the old 5 year plan writ new. If there was a plan, it was clearly ill conceived as the ‘rebuild’ of the squad during the summer was quite clearly at the time insufficient to resolve longstanding issues within the squad.

  • 41 Ibizatoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:27 PM

Here is the bust-up link from Sky Sports (a preferred media partner).

I wonder whether the club will be refuting the claims or whether this would fall under “best control and re-enforce the positive messages the club wished to deliver to them” which was thhe answer when asked about Sky and the Mirrors preferred status with the club?

So what’s the positive message that they’re trying to control and enforce? Our current woes aren’t down to Steve? It’s the players fault, you know, the old ones, prior to the club reaslising they had made mistakes (whatever they are?!?)?

If this is swept under the carpet, should we expect to see SS banned?

  • 42 mindshaft // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:31 PM

To be fair to Collo, Vardy was pulling Mbemba inside out, was embarrassing watching Mbemba constantly being on wrong side of him

  • 43 BandB // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:34 PM

Lee Ryder looks to have been assured it was all just a planned exercise in gee-ing up the players.
A little bit of mind games. You know, nothing sinister, like.

  • 44 Lilongwe Geordie // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:36 PM

Yeah, Mbemba was appalling against Leicester. Out muscled on a number of occasions, caught wrong side, odd choice of challenge. Same goes for the other 3 as well. Mbemba should rightly get cut more slack, but he has made major errors on a number of occasions, and his favourite challenge is the same challenge Colo was sent off for and was lambasted for. Mbemba tries it at a few times a game.

I like the new signings (maybe Thauvin excepted, was never convinced by him in France) and will give them time to settle, but it is unfair just criticising Thauvin, they have all been poor more often then they have been good.

  • 45 Ibizatoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:37 PM

BandB…I’ve no doubt. That’s what good coaches do! So pleased to see Steve making his mark on the club.

  • 46 BandB // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:42 PM

Someone looks to have been singing here.
Luckily, we have the intrepid Chronicle to check things out with their contacts at the club press office.

  • 47 Ibizatoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:48 PM

BandB…You know me, I just like a bit of clarity. I’m so pleased Ryder has been able to get to the bottom of it all, so we can all move on.

Just had a re-read of the July FF minutes.

“PP: “Motivation can be key and Steve Black could be a great appointment in terms of instilling belief into the players and making them feel confident to show their ability.”

The board noted that they have spoken at length about what they want in potential new players and character is key to that.”

“Dave Abbott (DA): “We had a lot of injuries last season. Have there been any changes?”

SMc: “It’s one of the first things we look at and we talk to the doctor and the medical staff. We’ve got very good staff behind the scenes. We’ve gone though training methods, what we do and seeing how we can avoid injuries. The doctor was one of the first people I spoke to.

“We want players to be available every Saturday so that’s our target. If a player gets injured, we need accurate diagnosis, good treatment, good rehab and to get him back as soon as possible.””

“Taylor Payne (TP): “From fans, there’s a lot of residual frustration about last season. Why did the failures occur – was it the model, personnel or finance?”

The club stated that a combination of factors occurred but repeated it did not want to dwell on the past.

To club did however underline that its final position and being in a situation whereby it needed to secure its Premier League status on the final game of last season was wholly unacceptable.”

I’m just pleased (yes, I’m using that word a lot today) that there is no need to “dwell on the past” and that the “objectives are clear”.

  • 48 AncientC // Nov 26, 2015 at 12:58 PM

There is nothing like a contrived training ground bust up to pacify the baying fans.

  • 49 BandB // Nov 26, 2015 at 1:07 PM

It’s being said that it blew up over players whingeing about what they considered a bad refereeing decision.
Fans are also bound to get annoyed about refs “robbing us.”
It’s worth remembering though what an easy excuse for self-justification and responsibility dodging it offers to this complacent bunch.
The furore over the reffing of the derby match would have been in perspective if we’d gone down narrowly.
But we got hammered. Three Nil.

  • 50 c-dog // Nov 26, 2015 at 1:29 PM

Dost would be an awful signing. We need pace up front. Mitrovic is too slow. Shelvey be perfect.

  • 51 c-dog // Nov 26, 2015 at 1:29 PM

not up front obviously, in midfield. Wijnaldum is average

  • 52 c-dog // Nov 26, 2015 at 1:30 PM

    Mbemba is useless

  • 53 c-dog // Nov 26, 2015 at 1:32 PM

Shawcross, Shelvey & Vardy – safe

  • 54 Our Toon // Nov 26, 2015 at 1:36 PM

I said before the Leicester game that vardy likes to pull out to the left and cut inside, and that Janmaat will need to step up his defensive game. Colo isn’t quick, you can’t blame him for having no pace at his age but Janmaat was the worst defender out of the 3. Constantly missing, Sissoko trying to cover for him on the first goal when he got nutmeg…..Janmaat standing on penalty spot watching ulloa

  • 55 martoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:03 PM

Our Toon @54 – I was beginning to think I was going mad – why was Colo getting so much stick when Janmaat was clearly at fault for at least 2 of the goals.

Incidentally if you think Lee Ryder is a pr*ck there is a very good parody account on Twitter called Ryder Of The Day – it’s classic!

  • 56 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:03 PM

It’s absolutely sickening to know Huth could have been signed for 3M, worse still if Palace would have paid that for Collocimi

  • 57 hibbitt // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:08 PM

c-dog why would any of those players join our sinking ship

  • 58 chicousa // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:16 PM

    Our Toon,
I agree that Janmaat’s defending last match and in several others this season has been poor. He appears to put most of his effort into going forward and trying to help generate some kind of attack, which is sorely needed. So he may be guilty of trying to compensate for the lack of a decent attacking midfielder, which we have been sorely lacking since Cabaye was sold. Singling out Janmaat as the primary cause for the team’s troubles, may be unfair, as nobody has played with any passion or effort these past 2 matches. I think the team’s main problem lies more in the area of lacking character and heart. What exactly is Steve Black doing for this team???

  • 59 Jail for Ashley // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:21 PM

I don’t think it’s just his wek to week performances that people are fed up with Collocini, it’s the fact that it has been obvious for awhile now he doesn’t want to be here yet has just took a deal to give him 50K a week for the next two years, his complete lack of leadership and all the derbies he’s missed, the one he played in he lost for us, his deliberate sendings off when he can’t be arsed and his past refusal to come out and explain the latest 5-0 hammering, add to the equation he is the only constant in the PLs consistently worst defence and I think that’s why people have had enough of the curly coiffured coward !

  • 60 chicousa // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:30 PM

re: “curly coiffured coward !”. (Colo)

    Nicely turned mate!

  • 61 martoon // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:31 PM

Jail @59 – Yeah I get all that and would agree with most of it. However on here Colo was getting a lot of stick for being at fault for the goals last Saturday and I didn’t think so and I was just pleased that Our Toon agreed.

  • 62 ilovetoon8788 // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:35 PM

Hopefully the bust up means coloccini will be dropped and could be a sign of a new centre back coming.

Mclaren biggest mistake is giving colo new contract and then captain and saying he’s the best signing. Jokes on mclaren now.

If colo wasn’t given a new contract we would have signed a new centre back. And no way colo will be in the bench as captain regardless of form.

  • 63 hibbitt // Nov 26, 2015 at 2:38 PM

martoon he was to blame for at least one no question about that and numerous others through the season

  • 64 TroubledToon // Nov 26, 2015 at 6:41 PM

Shelvey would be a terrific addition. Good reader of the game and can split defences with his passes…something that we’re sorely missing. Cudnt stand him while at Liverpool. Thought he was a waste, but he’s drastically improved after that.
Him signing for us would be wishful thinking
