Poll – Can Steve McClaren Turn Things Around At Newcastle?

8:56 pm, Saturday, November 28th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 123 Comments

We are taking the pulse of the Newcastle fans after another horrendous performance by our team today – this time in south London at Crystal Palace we easily lost the game 5-1 and they have become a much better side than Newcastle this year.

Steve McClaren +Crystal+Palace+v+Newcastle+gc4V7R5RFJAl

Steve McClaren today at Selhurst Park

And that’s 8-1 we have lost the last two games by and we have now conceded 30 goals in our 14 league games and lie second bottom of the league with 10 points from 14 games which would give us 27 points over a 38 game season.

Steve McClaren is having a tough time of it right now – let us know if you think he can turn things around on Tyneside.

    shot blu

inept british players are you crazy?

8 of our 11 starting the matchs are actually foreign

    elliot- british
    jamaat- dutch
    colo- argentinian
    mbemba- republic of congo
    colback english
    mitro- french

of the british players in that current line up only dummett is a real problem but his replacement is only a sh1t hairdryer from france.

of those usually on the bench they too are mostly foreign

mbabu- swiss- the only foreign one really worthy enough of coming in for an englishman
    willo english
Lascelles-english and at this minute in time more worthwile than that argentine
saylor-english and one most deem our best CB as far as play goes the reason he’s a one we want out is the injury prone issue
    thauvin- french
    de jong- dutch
    tiote-ivory coast
arrons- english and again a player currently considered the better part of the squad just injured
    obatan-french usain bolt
rivere- french shola but without the great passion and sunderland destruction
    marveux- french
    cisse- serbian

  • 3 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:58 PM

Mclaren has to ring the changes big time for Liverpool

    Colo out – Lascalles in

    Dummett out – Mbabu in

Sissoko out – De Jong in

Felt sorry for Perez and Wijnaldum both getting taken off considering they were trying but with no joy they should swap positions

Although I still feel no matter who we play Liverpool will destroy us but at least would prefer us to go down fighting

  • 4 toon22 // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:59 PM

Cant believe SMC is still at the club.
As for his replacement our only hope atm is someone with prem experience.
But even if we scrape survival this season its not going to help us next year,as this or next we are doomed under MA its as simple as that.
Since he bought our club we have circled the drain in every way possible.

Might as well get used to the idea we are the new Leeds but without the success.

this whole mess at the club is not a poor british management at all it’s a a club jam packed with self fish people and ones addicted to money from the greedy cashley right down to the FOREIGN mercineries

  • 7 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:00 PM

So now the “go to” get out of jail free-card for Ashley is “he doesn’t know anything about football” in an attempt to demonstrate him in the light of the well intentioned, but ultimately fool-hardy owner who is being let down by those in his employ.

That is utter rubbish – as those with half a brain would know.

If we want rid of McClaren, Colo, Charnley and Carr then the simple thing to do is focus our attention on Ashley.

We don’t need a fancy alternative in place for Ashley. We’re going to hell in a hand-cart so who cares if that alternative sees us get there quicker?

Nothing more than we all collectively deserve, every last one of us. No one has a right to complain. Suck it up and revel in this fine mess we’ve all helped create. Well done everyone.

  • 8 Jail for Ashley // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:00 PM

We are probably the most consistent team bar Villa in the Prem !

  • 9 toon22 // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:02 PM

Cant think of one thing MA has been good at other than bleeding our club of cash and dignity since he slithered into the front door.

  • 10 Munster Mag // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:03 PM

I love SMC’s nonsense. He is class. We lack consistency!! WTF ??????????? We are consistently bad….

Just going back to what I said in recent weeks:

    1. Sunderland getting Sam was a disaster for us.
    2. Steve has to go
    3. Carr is a monster at this club and has created a disaster scenario with appalling signings and sadly, he will choose the next manager, just like he chose Steve.
    4. Remi Garde was his next choice. This says a lot about Carr
    5. Pardew is not as bad as the numpties screamed. He isnt great, but not half as bad as the lunatics screamed. This fully demonstrates the football understanding of some people on this site.

75% of us said we would lose, but 5-1 , oh good God. And didnt some numpty say earlier today that Sissoko was a complete midfielder. What ????

  • 11 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:03 PM

Makro keeps talking before a game about how well we’ve trained during the week. Then we turn up for the game and play even worse than the previous week when you didn’t think it possible. And Makro’s answer? The training pitch.

It’s crystal clear that Costco can’t organise the defence. And we know some of the players have no respect for Makro and Costco. So what’s your plan now Chumley?

  • 12 swemag // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:06 PM

Well I have no problem admitting I was quietly optimistic this summer. The noise coming from the club made me believe we were on the right path. I still think we have players that are good enough.

However, when things look like they look now you have to change. Simple as.

Rodgers is the man. We have the kind of players that would suit him. And I think our size of club might just be right for him.

  • 13 John Tudor // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:06 PM

  • 14 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:07 PM

Anyone with a half a brain would know that you can’t get rid of Ashley without a buyer waiting in the wings. And we don’t want just any old buyer. To sum you up, you hate Ashley. Period. Beyond that, nothing.

  • 15 AndyMac // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:09 PM

There’s a “Yes” and a “No” option Ed but why isnt there a “Dont be silly” choice ?

  • 16 John Tudor // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:13 PM

dont go to the next home game or turn your back on the crap on display then voice your disapproval with a mass exodus at half time irrespective of the score

  • 17 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:14 PM

It’s a sad day when I see us score to go 1 up and I am completely mute and unmoved. Anyone who got the slightest bit excited about the goal does not have a grip on how bad we are. Why would I or anyone get excited about a goal when we know what is in store?

  • 18 Munster Mag // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:18 PM

Rodgers would be a bad appointment too. No thanks.

  • 19 toon22 // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:20 PM

Saying we should not wish for MA to sell up its idiotic, the guy has wrung out every ounce of profit and dignity we once had and replaced it with the same ethos his tatty shops have.
The reson there isnt buyers waiting in the wings is due to the fact the fat get isnt finnished squeezing us to his own benefit,or should i say SDs benefit.

Any thought that we are soo poor a buisness propersition its utter lunacy.

If you had the cash exacty how do you think any negotiations with MA would go?
We have all read how he loves to hoodwink everyone so i kind of hope he cant sell us and looses his shirt over it.

Ruddy where did you read that? Tosh. It makes Ashley more culpable if anything. Nothing worse than an idiot at the controls of a machine he’s not trained for. And hiring another idiot makes him a bigger idiot to boot.

  • 27 lochinvar // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:28 PM

    Where is Ashley hiding ?
Under the bed, sign of a coward.
    Where is Penfold ?
    Doubt he knows himself
    Where is McLaren ?

    Where is Colo ?

  • 30 toon22 // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:30 PM

So to say MA is great as there isnt any other buyers busting a gut to get robbed by the fat get is unreal.
As thats what he will do once he eventuallys sells so long as he dont die first,he will make sure he takes every asset every last sponsership deal and naming rights every last plot of land with him and make sure he leave with the distinct view he has screwed over the new owner big time.

  • 31 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:30 PM

Who is saying we should not wish for Ashley to sell up? There are no potential buyers waiting in the wings because nobody is interested. It’s no more complicated than that. The fans can’t force Ashley to sell to a non existent buyer. It would be a civil war for no good purpose.

  • 32 welshgeordie9 // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:30 PM

  • 33 Tsunki // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Ashley needs the motivation to sell up. If he sells weak, someone will pounce. Give him some motivation. Stop spending time and money on him.

Seven Days Training For Liverpool – Will It Make Any Difference?
    Seven Years in Tibet might.

Any coach worth his salt will tell you that over training is so counter productive as to be destructive.
The players need to be sent to Coventry – except Arma he needs to come home.

  • 35 Nexile // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:34 PM

As long as 50,000 people turn up each week, there is no pressure on Ashley to change things. Fact is these days no team north of Manchester will ever attract the really top players, so a policy of developing young players is a reasonable approach. You do have to have a very good scouting team for this to work and give the (decent) manager time. Keegans only come along very rarely unfortunately.

  • 36 toon22 // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:34 PM

It would be a civil war for no good purpose.

With MA as an owner we are going down the shitta and we can all see it,unless we make things so bad for him its obvious he will stay.
Unless the fans make his life and his club hell he wont want to sell.

Thats the problem,he dont want to sell.

He might not rememmber just how bad things used to be up here but im sure he will find out if things carry on like they are.

There are alot of people who are daft enough to do almost anything for there club.

  • 40 jimmysmith // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:43 PM

I doubt there is the capability at the club to fix this, the heart and will for the scrap, and I don’t think Ashley will be inclined to just throw money at it, knowing it rarely works. We look sunk, and if we are, then I imagine Ashley will simply cut his cloth and batten down the hatches, and of course it’s going to get very ugly. He simply has been too cheap, and too secretive about it, for too long, and this is what’s come of it.

  • 41 Jail for Ashley // Nov 28, 2015 at 9:45 PM

The only thing I blame Mclaren for is signing up for a flawed policy that he knew full well about and didn’t want to know until Derby sacked him, a million of Derby another 500K off of us added to the 5M off England, Wolfsberg and Twente has left him quite wealthy!

07/08 – 12th: Relegation fight. KK had a run of 9 matches without a win before a strong finish.
Central line: Shay Given, Taylor, Nicky Butt, Martins/Owen

    08/09 – 18th: Relegated. Central Line: Given/Harper, Coloccini, Nicky Butt, Martins/Owen

09/10 – 1st: Back to PL. Central Line: Harper, Coloccini, Nolan, Caroll

10/11 – 12th: Decent first season back – Krul, Coloccini, Nolan, Caroll

11/12 – 5th: Pardew’s 4-3-3 football pay dividend. Central line; Krul, Coloccini, Cabaye and Demba Ba

12/13 – 16th: Relegation fight (Plus Europa league Quarter finals). Central line; Krul, Coloccini, Cabaye and Demba Ba/Cisse

13/14 – 10th: Seems to be back on track. Central Line: Krul, Coloccini, Cabaye/Tiote and Remy

14/15 – 15th: Relegation fight. Avoid relegation last day of season. Central Line: Krul, Coloccini, Colback, Cisse

15/16 – 19th (after 14 matches): Relegation fight. Central Line: Elliot, Coloccini, Colback, Mitrovic

Not including current seasons, that is 8 seasons in total. 2 top ten finishes in PL. 4 relegation battles out of 7 as we couldn’t fight relegation the season we were in Championship. Of those 4 relegation battles we went down 1 time.

What the heck have Newcastle been doing the last 10 years or so???

I do not think the problem lies with McClaren, it is a lot bigger than that.

I partly feel sorry for Schteve. He is clearly well intentioned, but not very good. The main reason i feel sorrt for him is that any manager is going to struggle to get results with frauds like Colo and Sissoko as two of the central pillars of the team. Old Man Carr – hang your head in shame.

  • 61 Thump // Nov 28, 2015 at 10:30 PM

Lascelle’s looked active when he came on, though I admit I only watched a bit of it after that and then turned the Brighton game back on. I’d much sooner see him start in place of Colo who seems to have a few good minutes a game.

As for Sissoko… put him out to pasture. He doesn’t want to be here (maybe he’s fed up with being played out of position and the general attitude of the club? Who even knows?), but either way he’s hardly coming into training every day and lighting the place up, so sod to him. Roll on January.

Couple of minor observations regarding Steve’s post-match interview.

“We were going to play 5 at the back, but then before the game we lost Haidara, and Dummett is not a wing back”.

…..Could we not have played Mbabu?

“…before the game we lost Haidara, and Dummett is not a wing back”.

……By all means correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Steve play Dummett as a wing back after half time, even though by his own admission we were still looking to get something from the game at that point?

Final thought from me before I go and drown my sorrows – when you’re asked a question in an interview along the lines of “What would you say to the away fans who have travelled so far to see that performance”, that’s probably your cue to say “sorry”. Not recycled crap about how “this is not us”. We;ve heard it all before Steve. What are you, as an ex-England manager, going to do about it?

  • 72 SuperShearer // Nov 28, 2015 at 10:48 PM

Sack McClaren NOW – Get Moyes in. It wasn’t a fluke what he did at Everton over those years. He’s a very good manager who has been poorly treated by one club and not given time to adapt to a different country at another. He’d turn us around, he’d bring in good, solid, dependable players who want to fight.
Right now we’re a shambles, we have players who stroll around the pitch not looking like they care about anything. That is the manager’s job to turn around, no one else’s.
We need wholesale changes, sadly, for me, the only way we will see them is if we are relegated which on current form we will be and deserve to be.

As for Sissoko, if we get a good offer, accept! His heart is certainly not in the Premier League.

  • 93 JamesToon // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:06 PM

The way bournemouth play with the players they’ve got is phenomenal. Geniunely think Eddie Howe is one of the best young coaches in the prem at the moment, and i don’t know what he does on the training ground but they play such good football that we can only dream of at the moment. but they’ve got something we haven’t got which is so crucial-fight and determination

  • 94 John Tudor // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:06 PM

if he loses he was robbed

  • 95 Tsunki // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:07 PM

Forward thinking is for Ashley to get rid of Charnley and Carr and hire someone recognised within the game to help him recruit footballing directors and a scouting system based on more than a septegenerian with a meagre shopping list. Ashley needs advisors first before he goes asking Lee what the problem is.

  • 96 Jib // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:08 PM

    Fury’s shorts are falling down
He cannot have got them from SD
    Nothing of Ashley’s stays up

  • 97 gaz 44 // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:08 PM

I’m sorry but I can’t see what mcclaren could do different.. It’s easy to say he’s lost the players but the person who has to face the music for me is Graeme Carr, I wish he would stop with picking up these spineless characters pay the extra money for someone with a bit of fight

  • 98 usmagpie // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:09 PM

So Steve, what do you think. Time to go maybe, be the big man and just say this isn’t going to work. Feel better about yourself and blame the board, the grass is to long, the New Tea Lady just isn’t up to par, honestly blame someone and GTFO. Lets start with this, any manager that comes into the club has to have the balls to drop Side Show Bob and Sissy I lose the ball all the time and don’t know how to pass anymore. Then they need to have the balls to go up to a player and say ” Come on you little Phucking Pansy lets fight”. A manager that will not take any excuse from players and explain to them that the fans that sit week in week out are the ones you need to play for with everything you got. And honestly we need a fitness coach that gets a little more out of the lads as they look lethargic at best. Lets be honest, any other manager in the league this one or any other in the world would have been canned by now. Pardew must be laughing his head off with his family sipping champagne.

  • 99 Graeme // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:09 PM

If you can watch BBC iPlayer, listen to Shearer, MoTD, on Newcastle. He pulls no punches, tells it exactly as it is. Players and recruitment are not fit for purpose. Well done Alan, about time it was said openly. About 20 minutes in, if you dont want to watch Leicester’s game.

If you think the last 2 performances have been bad wait till next week !! This one will be live on Sky whereas we have been lucky the last 2 have been 3 pm kick offs !

Think it could end up another 6 nil defeat by Liverpool Klopp probably cant wait for Sunday !!

  • 101 Blofal // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:10 PM

What I am really concerned about is that McClaren has taken so long to get to know this squad.

The fans know the problems and always have known. The problem players are obvious. McClaren starting Perez on the bench for the first few games was the first sign of bad judgement.

He has continued to leave De Jong (a potentially top player) on the bench and play the same team even when results are going backwards.

He re-signed Coloccini and made him captain despite his previous lack of leadership and average form.

He perseveres with Sissoko despite poor performances.

He didn’t play Aarons (before he got injured) when the kid was quite often the difference when he played last season and was one of our best players pre-season.

The first thing to do as a new manager would be to sit down and watch the entire of the seasons previous games wouldn’t it?

newcastle might have been a sh1t game but vardy getting 11 in 11 and just seen them announce fury champion of WBA so certainly can’t say i didn’t enjoy my sport today.

It is really painful at the moment, I didn’t even realise myself how painful this was going to be.

Three years ago, when 99 per cent of you were talking about “onwards and upwards,” a little bit of inside information and the willingness to listen to what the people running the club were actually saying about their policies, rather than Newcastle beer goggles or too much Premiership Manager, made it clear where we were headed.
Not just in terms of the bigger picture, but in terms of specifics, few of which turned have out to be wrong.
If you had all been pessimists, and I could have seen a path to the stars, I would have said so. And been far happier.
Some of you think you are finally getting it.
But you don’t yet. You fall back on “this club will be here after Ashley has gone.”
    I’m telling you now.
That isn’t an assumption I am making.

Yeah it certainly worries me some of Mclaren’s choices

Wijnaldum looks lost wide left whenever I watched him for PSV he played wide right and ghosted into the box for shots on goal

  • 112 lochinvar // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:21 PM

I bet none of the 47 punters who vote that Mclaren can turn the season round were at the game today . Thought not.
I salute those who went – ask for a refund under The Trade Descriptions Act or report Ashley for fraud – either way it’s criminal how the club is run.

  • 114 Jib // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:22 PM

They have to be up early in the morning for training 😐

  • 115 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:25 PM

At least Villa will be down with us next season I can imagine Sunderland staying up especially with Allardyce playing 8 at the back every week

  • 116 BandB // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:25 PM

    You are phenomenally stupid.

You will get the club you and those like you deserve.

Stick your infantile negativity crap up you arse.

  • 117 Tsunki // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:25 PM

For me the most frustrating g thing the last three or more seaso.s has been seeing quite plainly how this club is being leveraged to SD;s advantage, unashamedly and openly by Ashley. And yet the volume of fans who cover their eyes with their hands and see something reality eschews, not only that but berate the rest of us who can see the creeping malaise taking it’s inevtable toll, is depressing and frustrating.

This is not a football club. it’s the merchandising arm of a corporate behemoth. It serves him not us. It’s his to toy with as he pleases, in order to make those year end figures bloom. The facade of a competitive team crumbles readily because there is no passion or intent behind this team ‘building’. – it’s a myth. it’s a PR fallacy that is lapped up by the gullible and spineless. It plays on the heart strings of the romantic lifelong fan who hope against hope that it really isn’t what it actually is

  • 118 Jib // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:26 PM

toonking ” i think we all getting sick and tired of talking the same negativity ”

Who the hell are we going to sign in January and more importantly who’s going to be daft enough to join our circus.

  • 121 Tsunki // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:34 PM

Jeffray how wise of you to jump into bed with the inane Toonking and wheel out your Chun ki thing again which btw I documented years ago which you obviously don’t realise conveys a death blow of pathos to your already beleaguered persona.

So let me clarify this point – you say there’s no place for pessimism after today’s definitive bending over for our previous inept incumbent? You transcend mere imbecility with consummate ease you invertebrate. Keep it quiet, the watching world may eventually choose to forget your embarrasing inadequacy. Live in hope.

  • 122 toonking // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:38 PM

I was one of the few people during that knew all along sacking pardew was never going to change things and we’d get nothing more than another crap manager.

I’ve seen for ages that the squad is jam packed with mercineries rather than decent players.

you could be described another person who deserves what you get because we’re still contain ashley, we still contain mercineries and we still contain terrible managers.

I don’t live in a science fiction world, i’m not mega rich and i’m not this excellent scout, how much more can I as a fan do other than protest for cashley out and not provide cash fo the club in the mean time

  • 123 BandB // Nov 28, 2015 at 11:43 PM

I’ve spent a lot of my time trying to appeal to more thoughtful posters in sometimes over flowery language.
But ya know what? I can do both.
It’s time the one-cell organisms cluttering up this tank with their puerile gobshite got some love and attention too.
No more writing above your head, you silly little nit.
    Welcome to big school.
