Time To Drop Sissoko And Possibly Coloccini Too

7:44 pm, Saturday, November 28th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 45 Comments

Steve McClaren does not have a lot of time to start to get things right because we just cannot see Mike Ashley letting Newcastle hit rock bottom in the league and doing nothing about it.

And when you realize that our next three games are against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa we have little chance of picking anything up in the first two games and if Villa manage to beat us at St. James Park  – the disaster scenario – we could be in really bad shape after the Villa game.

Maybe not in 20th place but preciously close to it depending on how Villa do in their next two games.

paul simpson and steve mcclaren

Paul Simpson and Steve McClaren today

So Steve McClaren needs to be decisive and he can start by dropping Moussa Sissoko after another woeful display today.

And Colo is not the captain we need in this crisis situation, and it looks like it was a big mistake to give him a two-year extension in the summer and it could be time to take the captaincy away from him and give it to somebody like Gini Wijnaldum.

Steve could also think about dropping Colo – with the defense looking all at sea this afternoon – we looked basically pathetic as a defensive unit all game long and Palace took full advantage of it.

Steve McClaren has to do something different from last week – because whatever he did last week after the Leicester embarrassment –  it certainly didn’t work today.

In his Sky Sports interview after the game Steve said that  he has and his team have the experience to get us out of this mess – but they have also got us into this mess.

The season was supposed to start with the Norwich game after a tough first eight games against some tough opposition.

But we have only 7 points from those six games against lesser opposition.

And our players are a lot better than they are showing so far this season, and we have to put some of that down to the coaching.

Coaching is getting the best out of the players you have available- and Steve hasn’t got anywhere near that in the first 14 games.

McClaren has to make some tough decisions this week – and if these performances and results continue he will have only limited time to get it right at Newcastle.

And not much time if relegation looks like it’s beckoning.

british management being a thing of the past is one thing but a team consisting of so many mercuneries a terrible transfer policy and a defense in such a shambolic state is another

british managers do seem to be less advanced than a foreign manager but just where does a squad with such a bad attitude and such a shambolic defence come into british management?

we attacked, we did great passing and were always being a threat but lose 3-0 to sunderland and draw 0-0 against stoke. what part of british management gets the blame for a suqad so incapable of scoring the chances created?

Let me know when Ed comes off his roll.

  • 4 lochinvar // Nov 28, 2015 at 7:54 PM

The Villa game is likely to be a defining match in the history of NUFC.
The only hope is that FDB or Seedorf or Keegan are in charge by then.

Is Ashley in his bunker or at the Dire Sports Xmas Party stripped to the waist and behaving like a complete buffoon ?

If the Martians landed tonight and asked ” take me to your leader ” they would get blank looks , get fed up and go home.

  • 5 OneAlanShearer // Nov 28, 2015 at 7:55 PM

We can’t drop players. We don’t have anyone to replace them with. The only way we stay up is if we buy 5 or 6 very good players in January. Gutless cowards currently

  • 6 Mister Tuff // Nov 28, 2015 at 7:55 PM

Whilst Klopp would have been a start – somebody of his standing would have shown some intent.

Unfortunately – they’ve all conspired to produce this debacle – Penfold will just be following Mr Tubbs orders – and this is what it has ended up as – going downhill by the day, laughing stock of the football world.
The whole lot need to go – but they won’t as it will be a tacit admission of guilt/previous errors.

  • 7 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:02 PM

If you know nothing about football, you don’t get involved with it. The dragons on dragons den eschew any invitation to invest in areas with which they are unfamiliar. Mr Tubbs knows nothing about football. If he does get involved, surely he would appoint and rely on someone who does? Why on earth would he hand over to Chumley? It quite simply beggars belief. Last week Chumley had to act. Even now he won’t. He’s caught in the headlights like a cock pheasant.

Ed, if you will insist on putting these polls up after such abject performances, could you please add another box – “NON OF THE ABOVE” it will probably win most weeks!!!

Our future will be settled a long time before the end of May. Your indefatigable optimism and support for the regime is looking increasingly like poor judgement and a triumph of hope over experience.

  • 12 Belfast // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:09 PM

Ed says: And our players are a lot better than they are showing so far this season, and we have to put some of that down to the coaching.

Belfast says: Been hearing this same bollox for the last 3 seasons now under three different coaches.

Maybe they’re just not that good Ed? Just a thought mind.

I was talking to the man at Huddersfield who recently appointed Klopp’s right hand man, David Wagner, as Town’s new manager. I told him it was a very brave decision. Wagner’s now lost his first two games and the club has dropped into the relegation zone. Wagner has no experience of the job in hand. Very very brave decision; unlike appointing Makro, which is simply foolhardy.

  • 14 Crow59 // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:11 PM

Wtf is going on??? All the squad need to take at long hard look at themselves and realise what they have and what it’s all about. It seems we have 4-5 players that think they are above the club and the rest simply aren’t good enough. This has been coming for a long time and I hope today that people finally realise that what was once gold has been turned into sh1t through lack of investment, lies and appalling business management. Personally I think it’s been a sinking ship and when captain parsnip jumped overboard old stevie mac couldn’t bring it back. The only way this will work is a complete revamp, deadwood chopped and fresh meat shipped in and that’s from ball boy to fat boy.

  • 15 Shot Bru // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:13 PM

The club is British management from top to bottom

From Ashley to the rest of the boys club at board level and we have some of the most inept British players.

The transfer policy is crackers…I will give you that. But surely Wally was in a strong position before signing his contract to stipulate that he had a major say in transfers.

NUFC love a a Brit manager, keep employing them and get the same dire results.

Wally is clearly out of his depth and should walk and take his coaching staff with him.

  • 16 manxpie // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:19 PM

onealan exactly but we have people saying get dummet of for who??
anita get him off for who?

i and a few others said this when pardew was in charge even in the “best squad ever” faze but no it was all the managers fault
i watched the hull game the other night and maguire was exactly a player i wanted we were linked with him ages ago and he was a no nonsense player with power and a bit of pace but i bet if there was a player from a foreign league every one would want them instead

he can’t have cost much if hull got him but we payed a load for mbwia and sold at a loss ridiculous like!

  • 17 manxpie // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:23 PM

wow belfast talking sense maybe the luck will be on the irish tonight then and fury will win

2 blue moons in the same night!?? i wonder!?

  • 18 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:23 PM

The owner and CEO at Huddersfield know nothing about football either. Both clubs have today dropped to second bottom of their respective divisions.

  • 19 Mister Tuff // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:23 PM

Blackley – I agree with your serntiments about employing people who know nowt. I’ve asked and I think you have – what are Penfolds footballing credentials – I got to suggest none – after following the Toon for over 50 years.
We may well ask what are Mr Tubbs footballing credentials – again got to say none.
Normally – the top man would hire an expert in the field to run a side of the business where he was lacking.
Not Mr Tubbs though – no experts/top men -he might be deluded and think he has the necessary attributes.
One thing is for sure – the running of a football club has nowt to do with the running of a tat shop/tat shop empire.
Where they go next -who knows.

  • 20 jimiley // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:24 PM

Form is temporary but class is permanent. We need to get behind Steve and the boys. Nobody else is coming so what choice do we have?.

  • 21 Tsunki // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:28 PM

It has to be at least two seasons ago I posted on more than one blog that Ashley knows nothing about football, from managing a club, to understanding the motivation behind his customers the fans, and was completely oblivious to any concept of tradition. And he didn’t have to be, he just needed the right people to make it tick along and work the revenue streams. But his major flaw was not only did he not understand the game, he did not know the right people in the game to hire. Kinnear. Pardew McLaren. Purpose built grunts who were in their end game. And of course a bean counter and his gofer assembling the “squad”. I put forward that we keep buying a mismatched set of players, square pegs in round holes, no clear shape to accommodate their abilities. People focused on the ‘ deficiencies’ of players like Ben Arfa, the fickleness of Ba and Remy, missing the point by a mile. This is institutional incompetence run riot, the money grabbers grinding the soil of a great sporting club into the system with it’s cheap, tacky, Donnay training shoe. Wake up people, it’s been obvious for years, stop listening to the mindless, spineless blue sky parade who know nothing about football. Ashley Out!

  • 23 Transfer Sage // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:29 PM

I agree with Ed here. Drop Colo and Sissoko.

Particularly for sissoko if he realises he could be on the bench all season he might pull his finger out and get some effort in if he wants to play for France in the Euros.

  • 26 Transfer Sage // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:33 PM

    I fully agree with you.

I just don’t understand Ashley one bit. Even if, presuming the worst (or what most of us think) he has no care for the club and only wants to use it to advertise his retail chain he surely would want to at least be entertained himself and keep his “investment” and “billboard” in the top flight and comfortably in the top flight.

All he needs to do is hire a sensible pair of hands to run it, that person could appoint the right people below him and spend only money the club generates to put together a decent side.

There is no logic what so ever behind what he is doing, he just makes himself out to be a total fool.

I can’t wait for the day he goes, even if it’s 20 years down the line.

  • 27 Belfast // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:34 PM

    Very good John Tudor haha

  • 28 angelswithdirtyfaces // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:34 PM

There are at least 50,000 Toon fans wondering WTF can be done.

I don’t believe the players are all bad. Anyone who is playing at full international level ought to be able to perform in the EPL.

That leaves the inadequate guys as the ones who are past it, those who are not good enough anyway, except as squad back up and the ones still learning their craft and who are inexperienced at this level. Only the third group are worth keeping.

    Lack of leadership ? Yep
    Poor defence ? Yep
    Lack of creativity ? Yep
    Poort scoring record ? Yep
    lack of motivation? Yep
    Lack of determination ? Yep
Not playing as a team? Yep

We’ve had zero ‘bounce’ from our new head coach – so his ability to motivate is poor. I’m not even sure his coaching style and tactics are any good either.
The team has failed to gel. We still have the problem of square pegs in round holes. Carr’s main job is to add value through individual transfers, not to recruit a team – so the blame comes from from the top and trickles down like shite. It’s not all Macca’s fault, but he has failed big time too.
As for Mr Motivator – Steve Black ain’t hacking it at all.

  • 29 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:34 PM

Huddersfield’s owner is Dean Hoyle, owner of Card Factory. His right hand man is Nigel Clibbens, his accountant. At least it can be said of Nigel that his son is in Huddersfield’s youth team and there on merit. And at least they’re doing something right. Their under 21s have just won 10 (or is it 11?) in a row.

  • 30 lesh // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:38 PM

The players may have the experience, but do they have the will to turn things round? I think not.

  • 31 colwell // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:39 PM

We were extremely lucky to win at Bournemouth and should have been hammered, Leicester ruined us and should of scored more and today Palace destroyed us, again should have been more. We have an awful squad with so much shite unless we buy 6/7 players in Jan we will without a doubt go down.

Carr surely can not have any more say in who we buy fcuk he has proven when we spend money he fails and we we budget he fails what the fcuk is the point of him?

  • 32 BandB // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:40 PM

After events this week, I do believe that Ashley is more likely to seek Colocinni’s views on what should be done with McClaren than the other way round.

  • 33 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:41 PM

I agree at 21. However, as for Ashley out, it can only be if there’s someone who hasn’t got Ashleys’ flaws. Simply saying “Ashley Out” is wasting your breath if there’s no exciting alternative.

I read an article in the Mag which sums up the Toon fan. There are two sorts.

The brain dead fan who has been going to games for so long he does not know what else to do.

The social fan who really goes to the pub for a few pints with his mates and then dreads the 2.40 period when he has to go to the ground.

Both sorts then trundle to the ground and turn it into a coffin.

    Happy days Mr Ashley!!!

  • 37 colwell // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:43 PM

Players who need to be dropped sold to make way – Colo,Dummett Janmaat (As a RB) Sissoko,ANITA,Thauvin,Cisse

And ffs replace them with players with fcuking pace fed up with watching our players get left behind every week.

  • 38 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:45 PM

After losing the plot with Colo and others, and still trusting Colo, Makro has played all his cards. What’s left? It’s pathetic to think that shouting and swearing at a crap player is going to make him a good player. The fans have been pointing it out for months.

  • 39 Munster Mag // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:47 PM

Just going back to what I said in recent weeks:

    1. Sunderland getting Sam was a disaster for us.
    2. Steve has to go
    3. Carr is a monster at this club and has created a disaster scenario with appalling signings and sadly, he will choose the next manager, just like he chose Steve.
    4. Remi Garde was his next choice. This says a lot about Carr
    5. Pardew is not as bad as the numpties screamed. He isnt great, but not half as bad as the lunatics screamed. This fully demonstrates the football understanding of some people on this site.

75% of us said we would lose, but 5-1 , oh good God. And didnt some numpty say earlier today that Sissoko was a complete midfielder. What ????

  • 40 Mag52 // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:47 PM

Until Ashley gives the manager full control over who is bought, within certain price boundaries of course, we are going down the pan.
This control has to be given to McClaren or his replacement in the January transfer window, otherwise we’ll go down.
Replacing Macca without making this change would serve no purpose, not that any manager worth employing would take the job under the present circumstances anyway. Even then it looks like a long shot, but as I see it, it’s our only way out of the bottom three.

  • 41 ronaldo aarons // Nov 28, 2015 at 8:50 PM

Missed the match today, lucky me. Sounds like it wasn’t better than the Leicester game which is something else. I would personally agree and drop the underperforming ‘stars’ and give youth a go. I’m a big believer in youth, even last year it was likes of Perez, abeid and aarons that helped put us on that winning run which actually kept us up. Drop colo for lascelles or dummett and play mbabu at left back, I’m sure he’s fit. Still can’t believe they let go of abeid for a couple hundred thousand. I wouldn’t be against bringing Ferguson or Bigi back. Ferguson is a good crosser of the ball and Bigi offers pace, passing and decent tackling. Give marveaux a chance, give Roberts a few appearances to see how he does considering he isn’t loaned out.

    shot blu

inept british players are you crazy?

8 of our 11 starting the matchs are actually foreign

    elliot- british
    jamaat- dutch
    colo- argentinian
    mbemba- republic of congo
    colback english
    mitro- french

of the british players in that current line up only dummett is a real problem but his replacement is only a sh1t hairdryer from france.

of those usually on the bench they too are mostly foreign

mbabu- swiss- the only foreign one really worthy enough of coming in for an englishman
    willo english
Lascelles-english and at this minute in time more worthwile than that argentine
saylor-english and one most deem our best CB as far as play goes the reason he’s a one we want out is the injury prone issue
    thauvin- french
    de jong- dutch
    tiote-ivory coast
arrons- english and again a player currently considered the better part of the squad just injured
    obatan-french usain bolt
rivere- french shola but without the great passion and sunderland destruction
    marveux- french
    cisse- serbian

  • 43 HamarMagpie // Nov 29, 2015 at 2:32 AM

Drop Sissoko and play exactly who instead? How about play him in his best position? box to box central midfield, that is. Colloccini should revert to his best position. Bench duty that is. We should play 4-3-3 with Sissoko and Winaldum box to box midfielders and Colback deep lying CM
