Newcastle To Sign This Top Center-Back In January?

8:21 am, Monday, November 30th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 8 Comments

One of the weakest areas we have at Newcastle is at center-back and that has been true over the last couple of years.

Newcastle did bring in Chancel Mbemba from Anderlecht in January and he’s settling in quite well even though our defense has looked terrible this season and we have already conceded 30 goals in the first 14 games including eight in the last two sorry displays against Leicester and Crystal Palace.

Newcastle were very keen on Schalke center-back Joel Matip in the summer and the fee for him at that time was around £10M.

Joel Matip – target for Newcastle in January?

Schalke still want to keep him in Germany, but so far they have not been able to agree to a new deal with his agents and he is due to become a free agent next summer.

That should reduce the transfer fee some in January and he would seem to be an excellent target for us.

Joel is 6’4″ tall and a good physical player in the tough Bundesliga and would seem to be well suited to English football.

However, there’s news in the local press that Steve McClaren wants to bring in British players who have played in the Premier League and that could mean we will not go for Joel this January.

But things can change in the next four weeks before January rolls around and we have five crucial games before the end of the year – when we will have played half a season – 19 games.

We had 26 points at the end of last year after 19 games, but if we win all five games left this year we will still have less than that – 25 maximum – which shows you just how serious our position is right now.

The transfer targets could still change by January – but we’d be happy enough to see Joel be drafted in during the winter transfer window.

The 24 year-old has played 26 times for Cameroon and 236 times for Schalke with 22 goals and 12 assists – the only club he has ever played for.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

we’re in the mire yet again , none of our players look interested – in fact Gini, Perez Mbemba have gone backwards in there development – at the moment Mbemba is as bad as Willo – might have been a better idea to send Colo on loan instead of Willo. I e seen a couple of Wolves games and he’s actually leading the back line and telling people what to do – you may say it’s championship but I doubt Collo would get into the side and Dummett definitely wouldn’t . Janmaat needs to remember he’s a defender and our non existent midfield need to be coached to help the back four out and defend as a team
I don’t think I’ve seen two lines of four playing together – we seem to just randomly pick a spot regardless of where anybody else is – no wonder we ship so many goals

Just how good of a friend is GC to SM…. we shall see at the end of the next transfer window. We CERTAINLY NEED at least one new CB, but don’t know if Matip is the answer or not.Besides, one man will not suddenly make everything right.Plenty other positions need sorted asap.

Only a lot of money would make Matip come here at this point.

Do you think McClaren will still be there?

  • 5 hibbitt // Nov 30, 2015 at 8:54 AM

another hammering off liverpool and Mc will walk dont know what it is but the players wont play for him

I’m not sure of anything anymore with NUFC! They won’t sack him going off recent history so he would have to walk, which he has in the past.He should certainly know by now what type of players he needs & possibly who those players are….BUT…will he get them, will his big pal really go all out to get the kind of players needed to keep us in the PL? The window is only a matter of weeks away now so I think SM will still be here in January but, depending on what business is done I’m not too sure he’ll be here for very much longer after that.

Thats all we need another forgein mercenary cb who could care less about nufc. There is 3 players play for Derby County that could be bought in Jan for very small money and make a big difference around the place. Young right Back Cyris Christie tall athletic man of match recently Ireland V Germay, His Club CB team mate Richard Keogh although 29 has been in top top form for club and country heads, tackles reads the game well one of the reasons Ireland will be at the euros nxt summer and RM/CM Jeff Henderick like the other 2 will only get better and give everything they have week in and out they maybe less fasionable than the other PL wanabee flop we normally go after but these type players are invaluable. Colo and Dummet need to be drop ASAP what has happened to Kevin Mbabu?
