BBC Pundit Exudes On Newcastle Performance

Former Liverpool defender and Newcastle coach Mark Lawrenson thought that Liverpool had tremendous momentum going into the game yesterday against Newcastle and with Newcastle having the worst defense in the Premier League he predicted a 2-0 win for the Reds – which we thought was being kind to Newcastle.

But as it turned out we were completely wrong (what – again?) and our lads gave a fighting display and in that second half got better and better.

The crowd sensed an upset with about 30 minutes to go and started to roar the Newcastle players on and the rest is history as we won the game 2-0 and literally stunned the football world.

It was really a fantastic result for Newcastle and it’s exactly what Steve McClaren had been talking about in his Thursday press conference.

Steve said more than once that we just need a big win and the confidence of our players will return – and he added we have some good players but they are still young and struggling a bit – but we have a good team.

But few of us thought we could beat Liverpool – and in fact in our poll only 5% thought we could win.

We were concerned we could lose heavily, but we kept our fourth clean sheet of the season – and it was Rob Elliot’s third.

So you’ve got to give it to Steve McClaren – his coaches and the Newcastle players – they were together as a unit yesterday and once again the Newcastle crowd were simply magnificent.

They gave their support from the first whistle to the last and it was almost a sell-out crowd – that’s what makes Newcastle still such a special club – the fantastic support the team gets every week from the supporters.

It was a great day for Newcastle United because it was the only game in the Premier League and the game got massive coverage around the world and Newcastle came out of it looking like gold.

This is what Mark Lawrenson said on Match of the Day last night:

“The relief was tangible because there had been all sorts of stories that if Liverpool went there and won easily, that might have been Steve McClaren’s last day as the Newcastle United manager.”

“I think his team did everything they possibly could for him, although it is against a Liverpool team who today were the worst they have been since Klopp took over.”

“I’m not sure whether some of the Liverpool players have been reading the papers, listening to the radio, watching TV, about their performances of late or what.”

“But in the three areas of the side, Liverpool were just not at it at all today – though taking nothing away from Newcastle.”

“The Newcastle team have now set themselves a standard, that is the important thing for them.”    “Steve McClaren has to say to them, every week that is your base.”

“You can forgive anybody for a lack of ability, you can never forgive any professional footballer for a lack of effort, ever.”

Newcastle move above Sunderland in the league table to 3rd bottom, so we still have a lot or work to do, but wins are great when you are down there around the relegation zone and we need some more 3 pointers in the five games we have through January 2nd.

The players have now showed they can beat a top side when they all give 100% – so we must see more of that in the future.

Hate to think what Lawro exudes. Good win for the lads. We like being on the telly. Roll on Spurs!
