Newcastle are reported to be monitoring Hamburg central midfield star Marcelo Diaz, who is a Chilean International and only moved to Hamburg from Basel in early February.
Argentina web-site El Grafico claim the midfielder wants to move on from the Bundesliga club and they report Werder Bremen are also after the 45 times capped Chilean International.
Diaz has played only 11 times in the Bundesliga this season and in total he has only 20 appearances with one goal for Hamburg this year.
Marcelo Diaz – 28 year-old Hamburg midfielder
Newcastle need to bring in a central midfielder – hopefully next month – but the 5´ 5¨ tall midfielder turns 29 at the end of December and he doesn´t fit the profile of players Mike Ashley likes to bring into the club.
They are usually 26 year-old or younger so they can appreciate in value before Newcastle can sell them off at a profit after they have improved on Tyneside.
Graham Carr identifies the players who come in during each transfer window which looks to be just one of the problems in the way the club is run.
We´d be surprised if the Chilean is a real target in January simply because of his age – unless of course Newcastle´s policy in the transfer windows changes.
It´s never worked very well in the past and when that happens most sensible people move to something else that may work.
We´ll just have to wait and see if Newcastle do anything different in next month´s transfer window – but we are not holding our breath.
Diaz started his career at Universidad de Chile in Santiago and stayed there for three years before moving to Basel in 2012 and while at the Swiss club for three years he played 99 times with 13 goals and 8 assists.
He made his full International debut for Chile in November of 2011 in the 4-0 away loss to Uruguay at the Estadio Centenario, after showing excellent form playing for Universidad de Chile.
