News today in The Sun that Southampton are looking to hijack any deal Newcastle may have with Tottenham to sign England Intentional winger Andros Townsend in January and they have entered the race to sign the 24 year-old.
Andros Townsend – Southampton now interested
Newcastle have been continually linked with Townsend for a few months now, with recent news over the weekend that we are willing to pay out £8M in January for the permanent transfer of the Tottenham winger.
But if the news is accurate in the Sun today it could hurt Newcastle’s chances of getting Townsend.
That’s because the Saints these days are a lot more ambitious than Newcastle – their stated goal is to play in the Champions League – and they are also a very well-run club and could be an attraction to the 10 times capped England International.
Andros is very keen to start playing first team football next month so he gives himself a decent chance of making the England squad for the Euro 2016 finals in France next June.
He is certainly not getting much playing time at all this season at Spurs and he’s made only 7 first team appearances and only three appearances in the Premier League – and he had a game for the Spurs U21 side earlier this week.
Townsend has played a total of 93 times for Spurs with 11 goals and 15 assists and if Newcastle are to get this player in January we will need to show some real decisiveness and boldness in the upcoming transfer window.
