Candidates For Positions Newcastle Will Strengthen In January

5:00 pm, Thursday, December 17th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 110 Comments

Newcastle have a weak spine – which is maybe why we have not shown much back-bone in some of our games this season – and it´s not surprising that Newcastle will want to bring in a dominant center-back, a top striker and a central midfielder in the January transfer window.

And while the Newcastle players have been simply great in the last two games, Newcastle must still go ahead and strengthen in January and not get locked into a false sense of security by a couple of very good performances.

There has been news today about two of our center back targets – Joel Matip of Schalke and Lamine Kone of Lorient.

Lamine Kone

Lamine Kone of Lorient – Newcastle very interested

Liverpool are said to want to sign Joel Matip to a pre-contract agreement for his transfer next summer.

Also news today that Newcastle are said to be going after Kone – although Sunderland are reported to be close to completing that deal – according to the French press.

Either one of those center-backs would be great at Newcastle – but we´ll have to wait and see if Lee Charnley can get the job done.

A surprise could be if we go after 6´ 7¨ tall Werder Bremen center-back Jannik Vestergaard – the Danish International – and the Chronicle is reporting we still have an interest in Jannick.

As far as a striker is concerned  – we have been linked with 26 year-old Charlie Austin of QPR, 22 year-old Saido Berahino of West Brom, 22 year-old Michy Batshuayi of Marseille and former target 24 year-old Pierre-Michel Lasogga of Hamburg – among others.

Of those it seems that Batshuayi may be overpriced at £20M, although some big clubs like Tottenham are reported to be interested in him – but it´s doubtful that Marseille will allow him to leave next month.

Newcastle may have a decent chance of signing Berahino, if only because West Brom don´t want to sell to Tottenham because of their hassles and bad feelings between the clubs during the summer – so we may be able to get Berahino to Newcastle.

Saido would be a great signing for us – and if not him we still think Charlie Austin could do a great job for Newcastle.

We haven´t been linked with too many central midfielders – although it seems Steve McClaren wants Swansea´s Jonjo Shelvey – but with Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa now the front-runner to become the new Swansea manager – the last thing he would want is to lose his best player in central midfield.

We have also been linked with Spanish U21 defensive midfielder Victor Camarasa from Levante and maybe it´s a defensive midfielder Newcastle will try to recruit in January, since it´s almost certain that Cheick Tiote will leave us this summer, after a full six years at the club.

Who would you choices be for center-back, striker and central midfield.

And with the news today that Jose Mourinho has been fired by Chelsea just six months after he won the Premier League and also won the League Cup – who would have thought this would happen.

And with all the extra money about to pour  into the Premier League it´s only going to get worse with Premier League managers being regularly fired during the season.

Nobody is safe.

Comments welcome.

The players I would add in January:
Defenders: Jannik Vestergaard, Sven Van Beek (under 21), Jetro Willems (under 21).
Central midfielders in: Federico Viviani, George Thorne, Riechedly Bazoer (under 21).
    Wingers in: Andre Carrillo
Strikers in: Charlie Austin or/and Benik Afobe

just the 8 or 9 new players sazzer? we should go the whole hog and get a new 11

  • 7 WWSBRD // Dec 17, 2015 at 5:28 PM

Decent list bud…no chance it’ll happen though haha I’d expect no more than 3 come Jan and only if they can shift some people out beforehand

That Carrillo seems to be the pick of the free agents though Benfica winger?

We have any hope of getting him? Or is it pie in the sky territory ?

    Déja vu.

  • 10 banjax // Dec 17, 2015 at 5:45 PM

Mourinho to Newcastle – we can all wish but it does show the tolerances and expectations of Top Performing clubs are so different to poorer performing clubs like ours. It’s all a question of ambition and standards of excellence and boy have Newcastle’s plummeted in all departments.

  • 11 Belfast // Dec 17, 2015 at 5:49 PM

We very rarely sign anybody in January. I’m expecting much of the same this time round.

  • 12 davis_toons // Dec 17, 2015 at 5:50 PM

    Mourinho any day…

  • 13 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Dec 17, 2015 at 5:52 PM

I could see us signing Willems from PSV just recovering from injury , dutch and we have no doubt scouted him forever !! Probably will cost close to Wijnaldum money to get him but I think he would be worth it !

Carrillo I can see us being in for him hes really quick and he has had contract issues and Lisbon are skint as well so maybe get him for a few million

Still not premiership proven though !! But would welcome them if we got say Shelvey and Townsend as well !

Also a shout for a good little player there has been chat that Naismith from Everton might be looking for a new club in January exactly the type of little battler we need !!

  • 14 Belfast // Dec 17, 2015 at 5:55 PM

Imagine if Charlie Austin gets injured next week. That would really throw a spanner in the works for Ed.

  • 15 sparky55 // Dec 17, 2015 at 5:56 PM

You’re right Ed..we do have a pathetic spine and if we don’t fix it we will stay down at the bottom end of league.

I don’t believe we particularly need a centre forward but we definitely need two centre halves and at least one more defensive midfielder to replace Tiote.

…Plus of course a new left back

    Cheers Santa!

for once i wish they would just go for players with proven premier league experience. forget tapping france and holland for bargains. those days are over. i know prices for players of PL experience are over inflated but its got to be done and as we are 18th richest club in europe? why not??

So who’s the favourite to replace the Sacked One?

  • 18 Tsunki // Dec 17, 2015 at 6:07 PM

I say, I say, I say, Belfast – oh, forgot the double act is finished isn’t it?

Oh well just remember, Belfast, it didn’ t work out well for the Bernie Winters’ sidekick when he thought he’d make a break by himself did it, what was his name? Schnorbitz?

I’m sure this will summon up the Reverend Ian for another one of his inexplicable unctuous fawning sessions over you Belfast. I don’t know what you’ve got but he wants it 🙂

  • 20 sparky55 // Dec 17, 2015 at 6:10 PM

Shango…you’re certainly right there mate…we don’t have anywhere near enough premiership experience in this current team which is a big reason as to why were near the bottom of the pile.

…but the fat slug won’t pay for premiership experience so we have to rely on future investments to get used to the premiership without going down in the meanwhile…something we’ve been flirting with for the last 4 years.

He does like to gamble and that’s not good for the team or the supporters!

  • 36 Toonfan8 // Dec 17, 2015 at 7:28 PM

My wishlist for january, Matip, Willems, Shelvey, Berahino…That is another 50 M … But our team would be great…out Tiote, Cisse, S.Taylor…then go for Redmond and sell Obertan, Marveaux…

  • 37 Sazzer // Dec 17, 2015 at 7:30 PM

Obviously, not in real life but a couple of full games with each of them on TV. We have been linked with most of them except Viviani and Bazoer. Most of the players that people have heard of are either unrealistic or overvalued.

Obertan, Marv, S.Taylor, and Williamson contracts is running out in the summer and contributing nothing to our starting eleven at the moment. It would be nice to have 4 players in when our key players start getting injured this season and would allow the new guys to settle in for next season. It’s also time to let Vuckic go.

I can reduce my list to only 1-5 players but I rather sell 3-4 of the players that isn’t in our starting eleven.

Agree, no chance of all of them but a small chance of signing one of them.

‘The fighting cock’ is the name of this Spurs Forum I’ve just been having a nosey through. The thread is called ‘The Mighty Spurs vs. Northern Horse Beaters’… Comedy gold. At half time its all “we should score 2 or 3 more in the 2nd half” and “This Newcastle team is weak as piss”

The comments when Perez scores at the death are hilarious. Have a flick through if you get a spare few mins.

Yes, the Lumbering Knobs really know their footy. Hopefully they finish 7th or 8th this season. Possibly they would like to bring Jose in? The Not as Special One is looking for a job apparently. 😆

  • 42 Toon-Prodigy // Dec 17, 2015 at 8:07 PM

We will know after January, wow deja vu. How many times have we done this now under Ashley?

Maybe it was the poor squad and injury list aswell as the bedding in other than the manager?

  • 43 Thump // Dec 17, 2015 at 8:17 PM

Reasons Villa will beat us: We’re Newcastle. They aren’t.

  • 44 GeordieTwo // Dec 17, 2015 at 8:17 PM

Which way will Chelsea’s season go with Mourinho gone? I would have to say they will get a huge lift from an incoming manager and will be 10th or so come mid January.

  • 45 GeordieTwo // Dec 17, 2015 at 8:20 PM

Easy prediction to make though isn’t it? 😀

  • 46 GeordieTwo // Dec 17, 2015 at 8:20 PM

Jesper mate, how are you and the fam doing?

  • 47 jimmysmith // Dec 17, 2015 at 8:25 PM

Chelsea tend to agree to pay their fired managers until they get another job, and Mourinho has a contract until 2019 and must be on north of 10 million pounds a year. He just fell out with his players, in a remarkably short space of time it must be said, but nowadays the players always win.

  • 48 Toon Tang // Dec 17, 2015 at 8:29 PM

‘The lumbering knobs’ sounds about right G2, they need to learn they’re dealing with ‘the unpredictables’, literally anything can happen.

It made me laugh how the whole forum descends into argument and in-fighting by the end of it. Not to dissimilar to our own blog after a heavy defeat eh 🙂

  • 49 Thump // Dec 17, 2015 at 8:35 PM

some people on here need to get a reality check
Mourhino eoyld want 19 million a year at least and a huge war chest – not gonna happen
we need a spine which includes an actual goal scorer – I like Mitro but he’s basically a heskey and I like Perez but he’s 8 – 12 goals a season max … we need a 22 – 30 goals a season striker
I reckon Mitro / Perez and Cisse will be lucky to get 25-30 goals between them

  • 58 GeordieTwo // Dec 17, 2015 at 9:33 PM

A lot of problems in that Chelsea squad. Time for a clearout I would think. We would never pay enough to get any of them of course. Still I like the looks of our Perez, and Mitro looks better with a little weight off. Move Cisse on in January and bring in a decent replacement along with at least 1 good CB. Get quality in, not young kids from France or another continental country. If we do, we should rise towards mid table.

  • 59 GeordieTwo // Dec 17, 2015 at 9:33 PM

    Lee Charnley Bunga Party
Willems, Carrillo and the rest of my list aren’t PL proven but neither is player like Townsend. I don’t mind us buying Townsend but he’s no more proven than Obertan when he left Manchester United. He’s a talented player but he’s never managed get a lot of assists or goals.

I prefer Carrillo over Townsend because last season he managed 7 goals and 18 assists in 46 games. 2 assists in 6 games in Champions League.

Willems over Robertson because Willems got 16 assists and 4 goals in 42 games.

Vestergaard over Matip because he has potential to become even better and is more of leader than Matip. Also Matip would be away to ACON.

I also prefer bringing in 2 midfield players in Viviani and Thorne than buying 1 Shelvey. Thorne is similar to Carrick and Viviani is similar to Scholes/Cabaye.

If players like Berahino, Berardi and Lacazette and so on would consider coming here then I would adjust my list. I just think they will end up in clubs higher up in the hiearchy.

  • 62 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Dec 17, 2015 at 9:39 PM

  • 63 GeordieTwo // Dec 17, 2015 at 9:46 PM

It’s a very quiet place jesper mate. Very small town but some beautiful areas to walk around the inlet. It’s rapidly changing though as the Lower Mainland is a very desirable place for wealthy foreigners to buy real estate in. You can still buy a place here but the asking prices are outrageous. I worry for the future generations like my daughter. She will never be able to afford a house anywhere near here unfortunately.

  • 64 GeordieTwo // Dec 17, 2015 at 9:47 PM

Very interesting comments @61 Sazzer mate. I wonder who we’ll actually end up with in January. Surely we must get an experienced CB at the very least and a very good striker to replace Cisse.

  • 69 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Dec 17, 2015 at 10:02 PM

We do need to sign British players as well though or we will fail the homegrown rule not sure what the punishment of it is ?

Just think Shelvey allows us to buy a midfielder who can just slot right in with no adjustment not even a game needed hes premiership ready !

Have a funny feeling we will all be disappointed at the end of the window ……

  • 70 jimmysmith // Dec 17, 2015 at 10:05 PM

I agree we don’t have a real goalscorer other than Cisse, and his shortcomings otherwise often make us weaker when he plays, and of course when he doesn’t score. I’d like to see SDJ, Perez and Mitro on the pitch at the same time. Tiote holding, because he’s the only player who can handle it on his own. Sissoko and Widj tucking in and lying a bit deeper. Colback at left back for his movement and distribution. Janmaat bombing on.

Not enough width, and too cluttered in AM potentially, but if the central defence and Tiote and Mitro simply hold their shape and the others pass move and cover. Then that is perhaps our best bet to get our best attacking talent on the pitch at the same time

  • 71 JamesToon // Dec 17, 2015 at 10:13 PM

Is that George Thorne from Derby you’re on about?

The foreign players I wouldn’t mind are Matip, Willems and Carillo, mainly because I think they are physically suited to the premiership. I.e Matip is 6″4 and will be a good partner for Mbemba, Willems as you say has a lot of assists, young and quick, and Carillo is very quick which pace is needed in every premier league team.

I hope Shelvey is one of our top targets as I think as LCBP said, he’d be able to just slot straight in. For a winger I think the top target should be Redmond. And if we buy a striker than I think we should wait till the summer and get Callum Wilson, or we could try and get Berahino in Jan/summer, either way we need a striker with a lot of pace.

  • 72 JamesToon // Dec 17, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Spurs have both Rose and Davies at their club and they’re both decent players but I can’t see either of them being happy to be the Europa league starter and that’s it, so if one of them comes available we should snatch them up. And next summer they’ll have 3 right backs in Trippier, Walker and Yedlin and I think we’d take any one of them to give competition to janmaat

You know I am the last person to pour cold water on the prospect to of a comfortable win against villa but… well ok not the last, but….a lot is made of villa not winning on the road but have a look at the teams they’ve faced in the last five games – not an enviable run of fixtures by any means. I just hope our new confidence isn’t going to shatter against a team who might get some relief by facing us. They’ve been swooping to the depths for the last few seasons, but they always seem to rally at the death. And we do seem to have built a reputation for charitable handouts of wins to ailing teams….

If I remember rightly they were on 4 points and hadn’t even won a game all season let alone away and we went 1 up and Pards tried to see it out for about 60mins at home to Reading who hadn’t won a game all season. We ended up getting beaten 2-1. That was the real turning point for a lot of people if I my memory serves me well.

Kneeding dough like all good Italians!

  • 88 Lindisfarne // Dec 17, 2015 at 11:34 PM

    Toon Tang

Can you remember the French sounding name of the guy who scored Readings goal(s) that alot of people thought should play for England on the back of that result?

  • 89 Sazzer // Dec 17, 2015 at 11:35 PM

Not sure if Cisse is leaving but if he is then I would buy Austin or Afobe. Vestergaard is experience enough for me with 100 Bundesliga games under his belt.

Yes, Thorne from Derby. I expect him to slot right in considering McClaren and him knows each other.

Callum Wilson is an alternative to Afobe for sure.

And Trippier, Iorfa, Byram for backup RB.

    Lee Charnley Bunga Party
You are only allow to register 17 over 21 non-homegrown players. So a thin squad and some foreigners that can’t play game is what happens. I think we currently have 16. That’s included Curtis Good and Marv that could easily be removed if necessary.

  • 90 Toon Tang // Dec 17, 2015 at 11:36 PM

‘Lefondre’ Lindis mate. Or ‘the fonz’ as his gang calls him

  • 91 Toon Tang // Dec 17, 2015 at 11:37 PM

Yeah the England thing didn’t quite work out for him eh. In fact I haven’t even heard his name in a long time…

  • 92 Lindisfarne // Dec 17, 2015 at 11:52 PM

Thats it – I could not get past ‘le glaze’!

God help us if AP ever does become England Manager, the team would be full of individuals culpable of technique and physique. With the occassional good fortune to score on a fastbreak,

  • 93 AMEOBI // Dec 18, 2015 at 1:28 AM

That Bazoer lad is a cracking player I wouldn’t see him go any less than 6/8m, unless his contract is expiring ofcourse, he’s going to be a star. Any rumours about him linked with us?

Would be thrilled if we signed him.

  • 94 The next Mike Williamson // Dec 18, 2015 at 4:11 AM

If we got Biesla at the start of the season we’d be in the top 10 now, regardless of what players we have or don’t have. I’ll be gutted if Swansea get him. so many good managers available now (Mourinho, Rodgers, Biesla) we should just get rid of McClaren because even his staunchest supporter will admit he’s no better than average.

  • 95 The next Mike Williamson // Dec 18, 2015 at 4:31 AM

In terms of recruitment, McClaren wants a defender who can play the ball out from the back which is why he kept Colo. So whichever of our targets that can pass a ball is the most likely target. I’d like to see an English defender so maybe Lewis Dunk, Tompkins or Tom Lees would be worth looking at. Or if we were extremely ambitious Shawcross would be perfect.

It’s worrying that we’re not linked with any midfielders. anita is playing the best football of his life (which is just above OK) and he will probably return to his more usual form soon. This would be my main area to strengthen. We need one that can support the attackers and one that can protect the back 4. Shelvey would provide the English spine alongside another.

A winger is also needed because we are too narrow with Sissoko and Wijnaldum to open up lesser teams who sit back and counter-attack. And Sissoko is only good when he has space infront of him. He only looks good against better teams that bring the game to us. He just doesnt have the skill to get past a deep packed defence.

Upfront I’m not too worried. If we can start to create chance Mitro & Perez will start to score. But I wouldn’t complain if we brought a pacy striker in who could also play on the wing.

Some fans are still crying out as to why Abeid was sold. His passing vision was poor plus he couldn’t cut it in PL.End of.Apart from some flashes of his midfield battling display,he was inconsistent and useless.
Re Townsend, will be happy if we sign him, specially on loan , as long as he doesn’t have an injury concern. There aren’t many options available. He is at the right age and when he start to play more games,he will get better.Plus his ability to play in either wings is a bonus.
    Carillo sounds good as well..
One of those and Matip signing in January will be good additions for the time being.
As for Colo,he’s not a good speaker & leader but happy with his performances so far.He was at fault for the goal we concede at spurs but managed to quickly redeem himself by setting up for our equaliser.
As for the Villa game, will not be easy but I expect a win or draw.
    Anything less will be unacceptable!!

    Reyan –

I don’t agree with your assessment of Abeid, and I’ve seen many others on the blog who would have preferred to keep him.

But as you say, arrogantly, “end of” – not worth answering your comments in detail.

I reckon there’s a few on here who’d fit right in on that spuds blog.

It seems to have it’s very own Jeffrey for starters.

    Could it be?

We seem comparatively harmonious compared to them lol. Some of the stuff had me chuckling tbh.

Ah, le fondre. Blast from the recent past that. Wonder where he’s got too.

Good times those. I remember them well.

Going 1-0 up then trying to hold out for dear life but failing miserably.

  • 102 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 18, 2015 at 6:19 AM

Whilst Abeid may or may not have come good, he isn’t having anywhere near as much success in Greece this time round. He has managed 1 goal, and the Greeks seem to have him down as a wide midfielder, rather than the central midfielder most of us think he was.

Regardless of whether you think he would have really kicked on or not, he is surely a far better option than playing Gouffran in centre midfield.

  • 104 Ron Knee // Dec 18, 2015 at 6:32 AM

Did McClaren get an opportunity to watch Abeid play?

  • 105 Toonfan8 // Dec 18, 2015 at 6:38 AM

We need to bring players who are quality and availible more than 15-20 matches like Tiote, S.Taylor, Obertan…
so out – S.Taylor, Tiote, Obertan, Marveaux, Cisse, Vuckic, Good, Haidara
in – Matip, Willems, Shelvey, Redmond (Carillo), Berahino and that would do it for me…players I mentioned are availible for the selection very rare and I think they had enough chances, I like Haidara, but he always gets injured, also I like S. Taylor – but he gets injured even more…so our team would be:
    AM:Wijnaldum,Sissoko,De Jong, Redmond,Thauvin, Aarons
that is 29 men squad – from that Krul out for season, Armstrong and Toney loaned out and thats 26 which is enough and give us many options and mainly a healthy squad and we ship out all of our crocks….if Berahino doesn´t want to come bring Carillo…

  • 106 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 18, 2015 at 6:39 AM

Can’t remember exactly when the Abeid deal was done, but I thought it was quite late in the window so he will have seen him train and possibly in some friendlies – I’m fairly sure Abeid went on the US tour and played a bit there.

  • 107 The next Mike Williamson // Dec 18, 2015 at 7:03 AM

I seem to remember Abeid playing a few amazing passes. He’d definitely be an option and would have probably got better with experience.

With regards to Townsend, he’s a rich man’s Obertan and I think if you take him away from his boyhood team and put him in a struggling he will get worse. He might be English and have experience of PL but he’s hardly a lion-heart. I’d rather have Demary Gray than him. But he’s better than having just Thauvin as a recognised winger.

  • 108 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Dec 18, 2015 at 7:09 AM

We could get a pound for Gouf!

We saw in the summer the club is not willing to let people go and accept we need to upgrade to move forward!

The summer transfer window wad such a letdown, not because of the players we signed, but because of the players we didn’t sign and we didn’t move on!

  • 109 Lindisfarne // Dec 18, 2015 at 7:09 AM

IMO a very miss leading headline in the Chronic, with no attributable quote and a very negative implication in that fans had isolated themselves from the players. Many of us think that a few of the players are not playing to their full potential, but I do not believe we had withdrawn our support and as a result a ‘bond’ has never been broken or missing.

Shame on the them for interpreting the celebration as anything other than pure rejoice.
