Newcastle have done well in the last two games with the same starting line-up and even though youngsters Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez did great for us last week at White Hart Lane and won us the game – we still think Steve McClaren will start the same team for the third game in a row against Aston Villa in the late kick-off game today.
It’s a game we should win – but you never know with Newcastle.
Papiss Cisse – will start again today?
Steve McClaren hinted at this with some of his comments of yesterday:
“The key thing for me is that I have four strikers.” “They are all training well, and over the last two games, especially last week, the four of them won us the game.”
“I think Siem and Papiss have come into the team and provided experience and a certain amount of leadership.”
“Against Liverpool, and the first 60 or 70 minutes against Spurs, they gave us a great platform to go on and Mitrovic and Ayoze did the job they are supposed to do.”
“They came on and made an impact. We said ‘win us the game’, and they did. So that is nice to have.” “It is a squad game, and sometimes subs are the most important people.”
” You look around that bench and say ‘go on – change the game’ or ‘win us the game’.”
“That’s what they did, so it’s a tough decision tomorrow, but quite an easy one for me, I think.”
Papiss and Siem are experienced and if they can play well in the first half we should see both Ayoze and Aleksandar come on at some point in the second half.
And with the competition for places increasing all four strikers will be wanting to put the ball in the net today and that cannot be bad.
Chieck Tiote has also recovered from his groin strain and has trained all week and will likely be on the bench.
Rolando Aarons was also supposed to resume training this week but that hasn’t happened and the young winger is again being dogged by injuries this season.
Newcastle remain top of the Injury League on Physioroom.com with 10 of our players out injured, although Cheick and Emmanuel Riviere are down as injured and both are now fit..
A win is what we are all hoping for this afternoon – the last game before Christmas.
Hopefully there will be some Christmas cheer this afternoon.
