Unchanged Newcastle Team Against Aston Villa

4:32 pm, Saturday, December 19th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 309 Comments

nufc emblemaston villa

Newcastle have just announced an unchanged side form the one that has won the last two games against Liverpool and Tottenham so Steve McClaren has resisted the temptation to start either Aleksandar Mitrovic or Ayoze Perez up front.

However, we should see both young strikers sometime in the second half today.

Newcastle (4-4-1-1): Rob Elliot; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Paul Dummett; Moussa Sissoko, Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback, Georginio Wijnaldum; Siem de Jong; Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Kevin Mbabu, Cheick Tiote, Yoan Gouffran, Florian Thauvin, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez

Cheick Tiote as expected comes in on the subs bench for Jamie Sterry, after he’s fit again after his groin injury.

Newcastle have a decent chance of making it three wins in a row today.

This is what Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has said about our opponents today – Aston Villa:

“We’re sixth in the form guide over the last eight games. Consistency is key and getting consistent performance is a platform.”

“Villa is a totally different game. I’ve watched them three or four times and they have very good players.” “How Villa are only on six points, I don’t know because they have very good players.”

“Let’s not get expectations high. We have to do exactly what we have been doing to get results.” “The key is us and the crowd. The key word tomorrow for everybody is patience.”

“Aston Villa is an opportunity and a challenge to kick on and go on. Can we take it? Are we ready to do it?”

At the time of writing two clubs below us – Chelsea (beating Sunderland 3-1) and Norwich (winning 2-1 at Old Trafford) are both winning – and Bournemouth are 1-0 up against 10 man West Brom – so we have to get 3 points from this game.

And as many as seven in ten fans thinks we can win this game today, so it will be a massive disappointment if we don’t do that.

Should be battering this shoddy Villa team

I will be in the minority no doubt but am quite happy Cisse and de Jong retain their spots

Leicester just aren’t letting up are they? Fantastic to see.

  • 17 toonking // Dec 19, 2015 at 4:49 PM

This team today part of me feels happy about it but then again the other half feels not so keen on it. villa are unlikely to create much space inside there own box therefore our best way of getting the goals is via great movement or strength something cisse provides neither of.

bring on the likes of perez and mitro as sub did prove a good use in the last two games but villa is a team who’ll feel much less tired and very little threat to us at all.

  • 18 Lindisfarne // Dec 19, 2015 at 4:52 PM

I predict we will win today and be a win away from 12th position, obviuosly depending on results elsewhere. Slightly optimistic, but better than pursuing an inevitable relegation battle.

very bad super 6 this week

    I went
    chelsea 2-1 scums

Really need the win with Norwich and Bmouth winning. Though if we do we go only 2 points behind 12th!!!

Not happy with Cisse starting but come on lads, go hard from the start, hope the fans are lively today, normally the atmosphere at the late games is electric.

  • 24 Toon Tang // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:02 PM

Can we replicate Bournemouth and get the 3rd straight win?

  • 25 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:02 PM

If we win today and Swansea win tomorrow, anybody from Watford and below could still go down quite easily.

    JD

im not really happy for Cisse to start this game, but if im honest i think its for his own good, this is the type of game and team where he should score and SDJ come to think of it, then really push on in the second half, get Florian on in the second half build his confidence

  • 28 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:05 PM

    JDubai

Usually are when we play big teams, it’s not just the players that can be accused of only turning up for the big televised matches, the supporters in these types of games often come and sit in silent expectation until something happens, either we score then party atmosphere ensues, we concede and things gets ugly, or we struggle on and on and they get frustrated, need to be behind the team from the start, making noise.

  • 29 Thump // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:07 PM

I can’t help but feel that Sting and Cisse are starting because of some FM-like “I need to be starting more games, boss” talk in the backroom.

  • 30 sparky55 // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:08 PM

Me heart says we’ll stuff ’em….me head is not quite as confident…got this horrible banana skin feeling going on…hope we go 2 up in the first half hour to calm me nerves.

Siem to score first, Papisse 2 and gini 2

    5-1 happy days 🙂 🙂

    Happy days

  • 31 lukes26 // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:09 PM

im really shocked SDJ is starting

im a huge fan of his, but seems to be well off being match fit.

im slightly less shocked at cisse starting..would prefer mitro. cisse has been better this season than the previous 2 though.

  • 34 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:15 PM

So how would you suppose SDJ get match-fit Lukes, other than by playing matches?

Hopefully see his real class today in a game where we’re on the front foot against a lesser team than his previous 2 starts, although Cisse does seem a difficult player to get on the same wavelength as, but even he has looked more sprightly recently, if not the deadly finisher he was on his arrival.

beermonkey, you asked about Kodi earlier. Robinhood Project has 1 or 2 HD channels showing the game. Try through NJM soccer or Noney sports 😉
Phoenix seem to have stopped their decent streams.

  • 40 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:30 PM

Josa to Man U would be wrong for both parties I feel and Jose would best avoid if he doesn’t want to do further damage to his reputation. Think he’ll wind up at Bayern, only major league he hasn’t managed in and if Guardiola does announce he’s leaving then I reckon it’s a cert.

  • 41 AncientC // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:32 PM

Tricky day for the goalkeepers with the weather conditions. Hopefully Elliot is on form.

Siem was useless at spurs. Would love to see more of him here.

  • 43 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:34 PM

Cisse, if he was on his toes then could’ve pulled the trigger, would’ve been alive to it in his first 6 months.

  • 51 manxpie // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:47 PM

cisse is 1 of the worst passers of a ball i have ever seen infact THE worst

  • 52 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:49 PM

Exactly the type of start I expected, cautious and an undercurrent of fragility in our new found confidence.

Look fluid down the right as usual, but nothing else in an attacking sense.

Dummet is a nightmare on the ball.

  • 53 peterk3 // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:49 PM

Cisse hasn’t made a successful pass yet.

  • 54 lukes26 // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:49 PM

in all fairness..the pitch does seem to be poor.

when cisse and SDJ are up front, its clear any ball to them will be promptly be passed back ..not the type of players that will run past players

  • 55 JDdubai // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:52 PM

Cisse offers nothing. Can’t hit it into him, offers no pace in behind. Unless you put it on a plate for him he isn’t worth having.

Keeping Mitro and Perez on the bench means we are giving ourselves 25mins to win the match instead of 90. Plus instead of killing Villa off early we will give them hope by it being 0-0 after an hour.

  • 56 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:53 PM

Very poor so far… Siem and Cisse are so poor.

  • 57 JDdubai // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:54 PM

Cisse and SDJ shouldn’t be together. No pace, no variety, no aerial strength. They could both play with Perez or Mitro but together they are just filler.

  • 58 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:54 PM

Few instances of obvious lack of communication, SDJ and Anita there and Sissoko and Cisse both not going for an header on the RW earlier.

Supporters as expected not doing their part from the off and sitting in silent expectation.

  • 59 Newcastle for alltid // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:54 PM

Can someone please tell me what Dummet is doing at this level?

  • 60 lukes26 // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:55 PM

looks like its going to be another 30-40 minutes of sissoko trying to beat 4 villa players until Steve makes subs

  • 61 sparky55 // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:55 PM

This is p!ss poor…we’re playing at too slow a pace…the premiership now more than ever is about pace and we’re walking around like we’re having a sunday morning stroll after a big night on the toon…it’s pathetic

get the subs warming up on the sidelines…scare the wassocks into doing something

  • 62 JDdubai // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:55 PM

    Have we had a shot?

If the other team are coming with 11 behind the ball then u need either a quick CF to stretch the pitch or a strong CF to go direct with.

We have both on the bench..

  • 63 toon kk // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:56 PM

They’re controlling the game. Quite even really, two basic teams.

  • 64 peterk3 // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:56 PM

I hope I’m wrong, but this has 0-0 written all over it.

  • 65 manxpie // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:57 PM

collo really is starting to look the part again shows ya wat confidence does

  • 66 JDdubai // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:58 PM

Wini playing wide and cutting in works fine as long as the LB can overlap and isn’t scared to have the ball at his feet. If we had a left footed Janmaat at LB we would have a threat on both sides, sadly nothing comes down our left.

  • 67 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 5:59 PM

Cisse and his bandy legs are pissing me off.

  • 68 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:00 PM

  • 69 mrpoked // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:00 PM

    JDDubai knows…

Cisse offers absolutely nothing. No movement, no link up play, can’t hold ball up. Absolute toilet.

I love Mitro, but he should have scored that…

  • 79 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:06 PM

Just carelessness from Sissoko that. I used to go mad at teammates that unneccasarily lifted it off the ground when along the floor is more efficient and easier to control, similar situation there, Mitro should’ve bitten his head off.

Good work by SDj in the build up.

  • 80 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:06 PM

Extremely poor game of football.. It’s pouring as well.

  • 81 toonking // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:07 PM

The games been sort of what I was expecting, no real threat from villa therefore a more jam packed defence one which has made goal scoring more difficult and we’re still playing like a counter attacking team.

cisse himself is now injured but I’m feeling more glad than sad because we’re bring on a striker with a bigger work rate and power making villa defenders do more movement and give us the space for others to take there chance.

  • 82 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:07 PM

I doubt he was expecting Sissoko to put so much pace on it unnecessarily.

The one against Liverpool was firmly his fault, that wasn’t.

all toonbrother will be wanting now is a villa goal.

The state of the pitch is terrible but I think it will manage to go to the end, sunderland had a dreadful pitch with heavy rain and snow the other week but managed to go all through, soccer saturday pundit himself was consistently saying that might have been called off.

  • 117 JDdubai // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:19 PM

    Get the pitchforks out lads!!!!

  • 118 manxpie // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:20 PM

didn’t a friendly get called off a couple of years after torrential rain? it seems we haven’t spent on better drainage since

  • 119 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:21 PM

Been a pretty poor game but at least we are ahead with a well worked set piece ! The movement by our team was similar to Bournemouths last week ! Also last week we scored from a set piece move so maybe we are finally working on them every week ?

This left hand side does not work Dummett is now on a card and is slower than Hutton so seems reluctant to go forward and get caught out so we need Perez or Thauvin on the left to spread the play

De Jong looks off the pace as well I personally think he would be better further back in a deep lying play maker role as opposed to being up front

  • 120 JDdubai // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:21 PM

SDJ plays best when he has space between their defence and midfield.

But if ur CF can’t run the channels and stretch the opposition then there isn’t any room to play in.

Perez would be SDJ’s best partner from what we have right now.

  • 121 TheToonKing // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:22 PM

won’t get called off. Pitch is a mess, but it should take much more to call a match off.

hopefully game won’t be called off due to the state of the pitch and be replayed at some stage – Villa might be on better form later in the season and I’d prefer to take the 3 points now
Not sure whats happened to our drainage – fatty turned it off to save cash?

Terrible game though and Villa look worst team we’ve played, they are doomed unless they spend massively in Jan

  • 126 AncientC // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:23 PM

It may not be a bad idea to swap chopper Dummett out for Mbabu. Sitting on a booking and the weather conditions mean one false move and he is off.

  • 130 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:24 PM

SDJ has done okay, no better or worse than most, been a turgid game all around – he played the key pass for our best chance outside the goal when Sissoko decided to pelt it at Mitrovic.

  • 131 catchy in norway // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:24 PM

    colo took his goal well

  • 132 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:24 PM

Sdj looks so slow and unsuitable. He has never impressed me at all. He looks uninterested and offers no link to the attack.

Dummett in the other hand will no way play in the premier league if he leaves us. He’s championship standard at best.

  • 133 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:25 PM

JFA will make something up about Ashley not having the under-soil heating on full whack due to penny pinching.

  • 134 Jib // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:25 PM

Well done mindshaft – you win the Saturday w@nker trophy 😀

  • 135 Tsunki // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:26 PM

I ditched accuweather for a more reliable Chinese app ha ha. I can see us 5-0 up and game called off at 87 minutes, toonbotherer will then appear in a puff of smoke to blame colo for it.

On the captains goal, not scruffy at all, as anyone who has tried to first time strike a ball bouncing on a waterlogged pitch will testify.

  • 136 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:26 PM

    Ancient

Bifg part of Dummet’s game is getting in early and taking risks with his tackling, so yeah, should be one Schteve is considering.

Put Thauvin on the right, switch sissoko to the left so he can match Hutton for pace when defending and take SDJ off…he’s offering nothing at the minute. Gini having a poor game…give him another 20 mins then bring on Perez.

  • 144 JDdubai // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:31 PM

Dummett sadly limits our attacking to only down the right. If we had a left footed Janmaat to overlap the left when Wijnaldum cuts inside then we would have a threat down both sides.

Haway lads, early goal to remove any hope they have.

  • 145 Thump // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:31 PM

SDJ needs to be pulled deeper, I think. He isn’t getting on the ball enough to really affect the game from the number 10 position.

That said, his off the ball work is good. Just a shame that’s it…

  • 146 SUTTY1978 // Dec 19, 2015 at 6:32 PM

Great way to put us in a foul mood once again, you set of bottlers!

Expected typical NUFC, got typical NUFC.

Wasteful, got done when we lulled ourselves in to a false sense of security after Villa sensed a lifeline with the pitch and we did nothing but encouraged them. Then we got the typical desperate finish.

Not good enough again and I’m sick of the soundbites coming out of the club after a win or two. Shut it and do your jobs.

we get a decent result against liverpool and then against spurs yet we can’t beat villa, those two victories were not decent management by mac they were purely and simply a bit of good luck where the opposition play crap.

  • 246 JamesToon // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:23 PM

So frustrating, feels like a loss. Once again another game where the players can’t be bothered to turn up. Yes the weather made it an absolutely horrible game and villa exploited that, however we just cannot continue to turn up like this against clubs around us otherwise we’ll be in this relegation scrap all season.

Should have put the game to bed with the sissoko and de jong chances.

  • 247 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:23 PM

There is no balance in the team unless thauvin plays. All our attacks are only on the right until thauvin comes in.

Didnt take our chances, SDJ should feel like crap i hope. No excuse for a professional to miss that from that close.

Dont see why we start with SDJ and Cisse on, its basically giving ourselves less time to win the match. Surely you want your best attackers on for the longest time, and if its not working then try others.

Got it the wrong way round for me.

Cisse hopefully is done for us now.

  • 254 sing in the corner // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:25 PM

Yeah very frustrating second half in particular. But we had those fairly simple chances to seal an ugly win. Worrying thing was the flat approach to the 2nd period, reminiscent of our Jekyll side seen several times this season. The fact is we were reeling for a good half hour against lowly Villa and could easily have lost it.

  • 255 JamesToon // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:25 PM

Senor…Tuff I don’t think the quick fix as buying new players would do the trick!

  • 264 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:27 PM

As disappointing as todays result is, if we had been offered 7 points from out last 3 games before they were played, i am damn sure we all would have taken them!

Weather was a leveler today, but we should have still won that.

  • 265 Ron Knee // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:27 PM

    F……….. annoying but hardly surprising.

  • 266 Tsunki // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:27 PM

Hold back on the pessimism lads I think the weather was a great leveller, takes all the control our of the game. We didn’t lose, not a great comfort but there you are. Just a thought on Thauvin though, I thought when he came on we looked very dangerous good crosses in and more of a threat. Better than having the clueless Dummett down the wing by a long chalk. I wouldn’t be so hard on SDJ I think he’s getting stronger by the match, shame about the header but it’s hardly like he fluffed 20 chances.

  • 267 Llort muw // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:28 PM

Didn’t turn up? Are you guys feeling ok? We did turn up, I saw a lot of heart today. I also saw alot of heart from Villa. The weather caused the game to have a lack of quality, which I agree with. But not turning up? You guys are mad.

  • 268 JamesToon // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:28 PM

    welsh

the pitch being crap shouldn’t effect the level of effort and drive from the players.

Dummett is turning into the new williamson constantly hoofing it. We need an attacking left back who can provide balance in the team as at the moment unless thauvin is on, all of our attacks are down the right. Cisse is hopeless and i couldn’t care less if he leaves in january, and de jong could have won it for us.

    So gutted

  • 270 JP...from The Rock // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:29 PM

Jamestoon- aye those signings plus Austin and I will be very happy. We need Willems as Dummett is really really poor.

  • 271 catchy in norway // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:29 PM

Thauvin is my MOM, the kid looked like he wanted to win more than any other player of ours,, next best was anita he replaced

  • 272 AncientC // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:29 PM

Llort muw – if one of the easy chances were tapped in, we would be talking about the great performance and work ethic from the lads.

  • 273 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:29 PM

I don’t blame dummett for his rugby passes. Pitch was awful and he was on yellow..

But it shows he’s a very limited footballer. Nowhere near premier league standard.

Him and Williamson and obertan and fheb3 players in this squad who will never move to a premier league club if they leave us. So it’s shocking that upgrading on dummett has been overlooked

  • 274 JamesToon // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:30 PM

Typical newcastle ffs, perfect chance to make it 3 wins in a row. Look at bournemouth beating both the big teams, they then have west brom which they still turn up, dominate and win.

  • 275 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:30 PM

    Ron…yeah 🙁

…but you really need to be able to get three points when you play the worse team in the PL. It’s just sad when they make you look the worse.

  • 276 toonking // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:30 PM

A crap pitch will be no worse for us that it would be for villa, during the second half they were consistantly making threats around our goal, it also doesn’t explain SDJ missing sitters like he did.

If we can turn up and perform like we did in recent weeks against a liverpool and spurs team their is no excuse for consistant draws and losses against teams around us other than saying spurs and liverpool quite simply give us the win.

  • 277 AncientC // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:31 PM

Elliot was faultless all game, MOTM for me.

  • 278 Moonraker15 // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:31 PM

Team selection cost us the win against Villa! With de Jong in the team we have a passenger who is playing as though he’s running in treacle he’s so slow. Htf he can be in ahead of Ayoze beats me. Just after he misses an absolute sitter they get an equaliser. And how ban Cisse keep getting in? He can’t trap a bag of cement the ball bounces off him! Get rid of him and de Jong asap !

  • 279 manxpie // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:31 PM

lets face it out of the last 3 games I and I’d imagine alot only expected 3 points at most so 7 is brilliant to put it in perspective

  • 280 JamesToon // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:32 PM

    JP

Dummett just offers nothing in attack and is average defensively, severely lacks pace. Should be used as a centre half once a new left back is brought in.

  • 281 bettyswallocks // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:32 PM

Colback really p’s me right off, so many times we were moving forward with numbers and he plays a back pass and kills the momentum. WTF I mean WTF is the point of him.

  • 282 davis_toons // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:32 PM

SDJ REALLY should have SCORED the Goal. Its so Important Goal. What a BAD Miss.

  • 283 Tsunki // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:32 PM

    Whoa! Colo speaks!

  • 284 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:33 PM

We need to play thauvin. We need balance and we only have it with him. I don’t like that without him all our attacks are in the right side and you don’t know which sissoko is going to turn up.

  • 285 JamesToon // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:33 PM

    manxpie

i guess if you look at it from that perspective we should be very pleased, but the annoying thing is is that we can’t beat the worst team in the prem at home and we only turned up against the big teams

  • 286 1toon1 // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:33 PM

Dummet is pathetic, needs to be dropped asap. All of their attacks came past him and he is way too slow to catch up to play.

He is too immobile for a fullback and his passing is not good enough either.

  • 287 Tsunki // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:35 PM

Betty I’ve been banging on about coalsack and his handbrake style. Good at harrying etc but no creativity. We need better.

  • 288 JamesToon // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:35 PM

Yes perez/sissoko/de jong/mitrovic/de jong chances could have all killed the game off (villa had their chances too) but once again our foot came off the gas and we were getting pinned back by villa…yes thats right, VILLA.

The conditions were so poor, we could have exploited it by pressing high up the pitch to try and force their defenders into mistakes, and getting runners in behind which is what villa did and it caused all sorts of problems.

  • 289 manxpie // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:36 PM

james yeah but i feel the weather really had a big part to play today and very poor finishing and tbf it was a great finish from them

  • 290 davis_toons // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:36 PM

Colback is doing ok as a squad player.

But we really need a Smarter First Team Midfielder if we are going forward.

  • 291 JamesToon // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:36 PM

  • 292 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:37 PM

Colback he offers nothing but yellow cards and loads of negative running!

  • 293 Sazzer // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:38 PM

I don’t feel like McClaren did anything wrong today and I think the team turn up.

We just didn’t take our chances and Villa took one of the few they had.

We looked like proper team after Thauvin in terms of balance. Wijnaldum/Perez/Mitro attacking in middle, Sissoko/Janmaat on the right and Thauvin on the left.

  • 294 nufcursed // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:38 PM

    typical poor newcastle performance!
sissoko, dummett and de jong not good enough!
mcclaren is too defensive.. no attacking build-up play at all.
we’ll need at least 5 new players to have a decent 1st 11!

  • 295 Ron Knee // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:38 PM

I think that is the first time I hear Colo speak. His english is terrible lol and he’s our captain!? He even thought the MoM award was for him haha

Jamestoon- I would have Dummett on the bench or sold tbh nowhere near the first team. We need a proper CB and a proper LB like Matip and Willems. Colo and Dummet should not be starting.

  • 297 davis_toons // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:39 PM

Thauvin is slowly getting into games…hope he can try continue to try harder.

  • 298 WWSBRD // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:39 PM

Until Thauvin came on we had nothing down the left

    Every run was from Sissoko

  • 299 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:39 PM

We turned up, we just bottled the big moments and allowed Villa back in to it with slack defending after plenty of warning – both typical NUFC. Then we got the rousing finish, all desperation and grasping – typical NUFC.

Lack of leadership when things got messy and Villa got stuck in, after sensing a chance with the conditions, took 30mins of reeling for us to respond.

  • 300 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:40 PM

Dummett is probably the weakest link at the moment…Mr. Long ball!

  • 301 Tsunki // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:40 PM

it’s appalling to see how narrow the thinking is, villa approached this game as a last chance saloon game. If they can’t beat the likes of us, they know they shouldn’t stay in the league. Another 2nd half revival from them because time is running out. Whatever you say, the weather cost us, it was their opportunity to get a fluke and they didn’t get it. I put janmaat down for presenting them with a good goal opportunity.

  • 302 toonking // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:40 PM

    manxpie

I can see where your coming from in one way, the annoying part of it is we’re consistantly tossing away the points in games they matter most.

The 6 points we make against these bigger teams will only ever be a good thing if those around us fail to get a victory in their own fixture that week, a victory against those around us guarentee going points ahead. So statically we’ve only made 6 points more than villa in the last 3 games.

  • 305 Llort muw // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:43 PM

    JamesToon

Don’t think you get it pal. Our players did try… Let’s all just assume were going to dominate Villa because they’re bottom of the league. I get that, but they are in the same situation that we are in, but worse. They made it difficult for us because all of the energy they showed In the second half. They were always going to come out stronger in the second half. Just like we did at spurs. Saying there was no effort fromour team makes you look clueless.

  • 306 manxpie // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:47 PM

6 is better than 3 tho toonking lol
we bossed them in the first half especially until the pitch turned to shit the weather had a huge part to play in this game like!
and we missed 3 sitters which would have won us the game

  • 307 JDdubai // Dec 19, 2015 at 7:50 PM

Overall disappointing. But 7 points from these games is better than expected.

Dummett limits our attacking play hugely. We have nothing going down the lett at all, Wini cutting in works perfectly as long as the LB has a vague idea about attacking- basically if we had a left footed Janmaat at LB then we could attack down both sides.

SDJ cost us the win, harsh thoug it sounds no professional should miss a free header from 6 yards. At 2-0 they would have been buried.

Starting with Cisse and SDJ limits our team also, leaves us less time to get ghe win. Surely you want your best players on the pitch for the longest time??? SDJ and Cisse would get an hour, Mitro and Perez 30 mins…..it doesnt make sense. Hopefully Cisse is out for a while, Would rather try Arma in January that keep Cisse there.

    JD

Much better than expected, but to avoid relegation we have to win the ‘bread-and-butter’ matches like today’s. Wins over Liverpool and Spurs should be regarded as bonuses.

We’re witnessing McClaren’s tactical limitations, too.
