The Sun is reporting that Newcastle want Everton forward Steven Naismith in January, and this is the first time we have been linked with the 41 times capped Scottish International.
Certainly Steven is used to the Premier League having been at Everton since the summer of 2012 after being at Rangers for five years before that and Kilmarnock before that.
Steven Naismith – 29 year-old Everton forward
But Steven is 29 and about three years older than players Newcastle usually go after in the transfer market and we’d be surprised if the Scottish forward is really a target of Newcastle’s for next month.
Naismith has always found it difficult to get a starting position at Everton, which is another reason we’d be surprised if Newcastle are really after this player.
This is the fourth season Naismith has been at the Toffees – and he’s played 122 rimes for them with 25 goals.
We would have expected Newcastle to aim (much) higher for better players than Naismith – but we’ve wrong before.
Sunderland are also said it be interested in the forward.
The players Newcastle move for next month will give us all an indication about just how ambitions the club is these days.
We were almost relegated last May due in large part to the incompetence of those running Newcastle and we are 4th bottom of the league at the moment – only one place above the relegation zone.
Certainly signing Steve McClaren as the new manager just a couple of weeks after he had been fired by Derby County in late May didn’t exactly look like an ambitious appointment by Newcastle, especially when a number of good managers were available.
And McClaren has so far struggled at Newcastle, although there are signs he may be turning things around on Tyneside.
