It’s basically the story if the game on Saturday with Newcastle ahead 1-0 through a first half goal from Fab Coloccini, Siem de Jong was brilliantly set up in the second half by Gini Wijnaldum who crossed the ball and all Siem had to do was head the ball in at the near post – but he missed the chance and headed the ball wide.
It was a bad miss and then a couple of minutes later Aston Villa were level through a wonder goal from Jordan Ayew – the younger brother of Swansea’s Andre.
Siem de Jong – soaked to the skin on Saturday
After the game Siem immediately took responsibility for the miss and tweeted out this message to the fans.
I know, I should have scored? need to keep improving and keep getting results! #NUFC
— Siem de Jong (@siemdejong) December 19, 2015
And after the game Siem talked to the local press at length about this miss that changed the game.
“It was an important moment.” “I tried to head it into the short corner, but I hit it 5 cm too far. I was trying to place it, because I saw the keeper at the far post and so I wanted to head it short, but it slipped off my head.”
“Of course, I wanted to score it. Unfortunately, I didn’t. I went off after that, but we had two other chances to win it.”
“It’s not so much that I need a goal, it’s just that I want to take the chances that I get.” “In the first half, I played all right with some through balls, but the way we played made it difficult for me to get on the ball as much as I wanted.”
“I think the balls that I got were all right, but I wanted to take my chances.” “Obviously it’s tough for me,” “These are my first few games in the Premier League.”
“I’d only started one game before this run and it’s still something I’m getting used to. I’m doing what I can to help the team.”
“I’m enjoying it. I’m happy to be on the pitch. I want to help the team as much as I can, and I could have scored for 2-0, and I’m frustrated about not scoring.”
“But I’m happy to be back and playing. This was a tough game on a tough pitch, and I had a little bit of a cold so I couldn’t play longer. Hopefully, I can get 90 minutes in the coming weeks.”
“The last three games up top we’ve changed it a bit and we’ve tried to press more. We talk to each other more about what we are doing and I think that’s working quite well.”
“I think you see that in the last three games, it wasn’t our best performance, but I think in the first half we made it impossible for Villa to play.” “They had to kick it long and we won a lot of balls.”
“The second half they changed it and put on the big striker, and they scored for 1-1. After that, we came back into it and had chances.”
“I feel we are making steps,” “Even against Villa, when it was not our best performance, we got a draw..”
“We had a couple of games when our performance dropped too much, but everyone knows that in the team, and in the last three games we have been at a much better level.”
.”Of course you’re going to lose sometimes, but we have got to fight and make opponents work very hard if they’re going to get a win.”
“That’s what we’re trying to do at the moment, and hope that we can continue that and get some more points.”
After the miss Siem was immediately hooked by Steve McClaren and replaced by Ayoze Perez but the crowd still gave Siem some warm applause.
Siem is well liked by the fans after all his trials and tribulations last season with a number of injuries as well as that collapsed lung.
Siem can still make it at Newcastle and he needs playing time and we believe he will start again on Saturday and partner Aleksandar Mitrovic up front at home to Everton.
Papiss Cisse is out injured and we’ll see Ayoze Perez at some point in the second half.
Everton are a much better team than Aston Villa so who knows – we’ll probably win this one.
🙂

Comment #48Pavel Srnicek: Ex-Newcastle keeper in critical condition
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest in the Czech Republic.
According to information received by his agent Steve Wraith, the 47-year-old collapsed while out jogging in Ostrava on Sunday.
“I spoke to his sister-in-law in the Czech Republic who said his heart had stopped,” Wraith told BBC Sport.
“He is in a critical condition in hospital and remains unconscious.”
Srnicek became a fans’ favourite during his first spell with the Magpies between 1991 and 1998. He was signed by manager Jim Smith and played under Ossie Ardiles, Kevin Keegan and latterly Kenny Dalglish.
While Keegan was in charge, Srnicek helped Newcastle win promotion to the top flight during the 1992-93 season.
He was also an integral part of the squad that came close to winning the Premier League title in the 1995-96 campaign.
Srnicek was brought back to the club on a season-long deal in September 2006 as cover for the injured Shay Given.
The former Czech international was in Tyneside in December to promote his autobiography.

Then they will see if his heart is stronger and if so bring him out of the coma…..no one knows if his brain has been to starved of oxygen.”

Comment #56WayAyman is correct about SDJ selective viewing by a desperate fanbase. SDJ or any other creative player whose game is pivoted around decisive passing was literally all at sea the other day. How anyone can say a good game of football could be played in that is beyond me. They were sloshing around in pools of water. The ball hardly bounced, it fell short of the receiver when passed, it was almost farcical. Ed and the numb cohort looking at the game as some kind of indicator of progress are barking up the wrong tree. Move on, start the same against Everton. it’s not failed the last three games has it?

Comment #59As for SDJ, I think the most important thing he’s bought to the team is leadership on the pitch, yes he’s missed a fantastic chance but he wasn’t the only one to miss. Young Perez is a player I like but the lad needs to start passing the ball.
As for Colback at LB, I’d agree if Tiote was fit, Anita playing as the sole DM just isn’t going to work, especially against Everton. If also hesitate to play Colback as LB against Everton…..Delefou will rip him a new one. I’d rather play Mbabu!!

Comment #61I think everyone is being a tad harsh on De Jong.
Anybody like myself who watched him at Ajax and in the Champions League and Dutch Squad will know what he is capable of.
I think we have to remember that he probably has less experience than Mitrovic in terms of the pace of Premier League games.
One thing that was clear, was that he had no chemistry which you’d hope would come with games.
As for whether he should start, that is a different question. I certainly believe he’s worth a few chances.
either way it’ll be a combo of De Jong, Mitro and Perez next game.
Me and my pal were talking during the Villa game. On paper it would appear to make most sense against someone like Villa that we played a diamond.
Janmaat – Mbemba – Colo – Mbabu
———————-Tiote——————
——–Moussa————Gini———–
——————–De Jong—————–
———-Perez————-Mitrovic—–
However, for that to work you would need to guarantee that your players would keep possession.
It’ll be a tough one against everton. We’re going to need to have high energy levels and stay compact.
That said we saw them dominate Leicester this weekend only to be hammered on the counter which suits us.

Unlike you I’m trying to look at it logically…..Delefou has pace and trickery on the wing, Coleman also has pace. Dummett has no pace and neither does Colback!! From a defensive point we need a quicker player to cover that LB position, I would say chancel but we have no cover at CB.
Does that make sense to you? Delefou much like Pedro can go either way, low centre of gravity with good change of direction. Mbabu dealt very well with Pedro and more importantly matched him for pace. Hence why I make a suggestion which is done so with a bit of common sense.

I dint think you can have Tiote and sissoko in the same team these days. Tiote is a shadow of his former self and will be chasing his tail against Everton’s creativity and pace.
Not sure what Anita has to do to please some people but for me he’s having to cover colback and do his own work too. I think dropping colback might help Anita play his game but then who else do we have capable of CM? I’d live winjaldum to get a start there but fear he’s a bit low on confidence at the minute judging by his last couple of games.
Someone a few posts back mentioned that Everton’s full backs are their weakness at the minute and he’s right. Shame we don’t have anyone on the left who can do what Janmaat does on the right. We’re so one-sided at the minute it’s embarrassing. How dummet gets a game on the left is beyond me. The lad is a trier but can’t beat a man or get a decent delivery into the box- both of which is vital for full backs these days. Santa please bring us Jetro Willems for Christmas…

Comment #64A lot of folks want to see Mitro and Perez in the side.
An observation.
When they are both on we seem to loose the ability to put pressure on the ball. We then start loosing the 50/50s and it starts to go wrong.
Mitro not very mobile. When other side have possession Perez jogs about like an old lady.
