Steve McClaren Gives Positive Injury Update

During his press conference today Newcastle manage Steve McClaren gave an injury update and it was generally good news that some players will soon be returning to fitness.

Papiss Cisse is surprisingly still being assessed with the groin injury he picked up and we suppose he could even play against Everton on Saturday but that’s very unlikely.

But the fact he ‘s still being assessed probably means he will not be out for very long.

Steven Taylor – returns to training soon

Jamaal Lascelles returned to training today and Steve Taylor should return soon, after over four months out with the hamstring injury he picked up at the end of August.

This is what Steve said today about the injury situation:

“We don’t mention it much but we’ve got 4 or 5 long-term injuries. 9 on the treatment table.”

“Cisse is a ‘doubt’ for Everton but still needs to be assessed. Lascelles back in training, Aarons a week away. Taylor a fortnight away.”

“We have to move on quickly from Villa. We were very unlucky and had chances to win it. I understand the fans’ frustrations.”

“The squad will be in on Christmas Day in the morning. Train as normal to prepare for a tough game with Everton.”

It’s good that Rolando Aarons is not too far away from returning too – and we have seen very little of Rolando over the last 16 months due to a string of injuries.

And we have nine players on the injury list – and that’s still a lot.

Comments welcome.

Taylor back just in time to pour cold water on any chance of signing a top centre back in January, I suppose. He and we have been plagued by his injury record, which has robbed both him and the side of about 200 very capable first team appearances, and all of the progress and consistency at the back that would have come with it. Add all the appearances Willo has made as his understudy to Taylor’s tally and imagine how much better we’d have been and be now. It’s time to draw a line under it, and get a player of Willo’s robustness and Taylor’s qualities, now that both contracts are running down.

Yes but to be fair, Jimmy, Steven Taylor does have his bad points.

Thauvin for 13 million was an astonishing signing. Just physically and temperamentally unlikely to cut it at Newcastle. I wonder just how hard it is to get players to sign for us. More difficult than we might even imagine. Cabella and Thauvin surely weren’t anything like first choice targets. Rivierre, Obertan, Gouffran also, surely not players we really wanted, just ones we could get.

Apparently we were after Thauvin for ages and it was Bielsa that put the block on it.

Ha, yeah sure, he’s no Franco Baresi, but he’s been a first team player at Newcastle for ten seasons and missed as many games as he’s played in that time. That’s a ton of experience and the improvement, quality and composure that comes with it, gone unrealised.

The thing for me when it comes to people’s realistic expectations is that it shouldn’t be too much to ask to aim higher than a steady player. The likes of the following all fit that description but we could and should be aiming higher than that for first choice players

Jury is out on lascelles and darlow

Then there’s those squad players who just aren’t good enough for that even

Then there’s the players Id keep as first choice

Thauvin (needs building up physically and mentally and time to adjust but I have more hope for him than cabella).
    Siem de jong
Krul but I want a competitor for his position better than elliot
Mbabu could well develope into a 1st team player but needs time.

So in my eyes we are short about 6 to 8 players.

The quality has to go up or we will lose the quality we have as why would they stick around.

January will tell us if Ashley is serious about changing. Both in the incoming and outgoings. I have my doubts which is not surprising.

As for saylor his injury record is beyond a joke now. I’d say squad player if we could afford the luxury but I don’t believe we can.

Thauvin to Marseille two years ago for 13 million Euro was bad enough, but now, and to us for 13 million quid?

Saylor needs to go he’s a sick note. Willo not good enough and neither is Dummett. We need those positions covered with quality players in their places.

In this world you get what you pay for.

Now if Charnley’s offering potential signings £20 a week, well that might explain how we succeed where other clubs don’t.

We get players like Cabella, Riviere and Thauvin whereas others get the likes of Delli Ally (excuse the spelling).

9 injuries but only Tim Krul is first choice and Eliot has actually done better than him. Only other players that MIGHT come near a starting position are Tiote and Cisse. Aarons would be a useful sub but McClaren didn’t seem to use him when he was fit anyway.. Basically we’ve almost played our full strength 11 all season. These injury stats are down to reserve players like Curtis Good, Steven Taylor etc.

I see McLaren is saying the results of Cisse scans will determine whether Armstrong returns and that as Skrtel is out for 6 weeks, Liverpool are making a move for Matip so I guess the fat cheapskate twat isnt going to strengthen the key areas of the team yet again.

We will therefore struggle to avoid relegation.

lesh…and if Deli Alli had come here he had looked like another Riviere and had Spurs signed and on form Cabella he would have looked like this seasons Deli Alli 😉

…don’t necessarily confuse a good player with a poor run club. We have a tendency to ruin players.

    Read that this morning lol

I suppose him letting us know that “thumper” is two weeks away is a hint that they’ll be no new CB’S either.

There’s always that sinking feeling coupled with a suspicion of being duped by this club.

Can anyone blame us though after how we’ve been treated over the last 7-8 years.

    Fat cnut out!

Very merry Christmas and a happy new year to one and all.

    Defenders currently under contract:

    Youth players:

From memory that is at least 11 players currently contracted to the club which is probably why they are not interested in signing any new central defenders. Running with a surplus of players is the perfect excuse for Penfold to do nothing in the ‘difficult’ mid season window. Despite the promise to ‘make our own luck’ and the plainly obvious need for a proven left back. Schtevie is forced to cover the full back positions with the excess of cenral defenders, where as usually these positions are occasionally used to bring on young midfielders for first team experience. The perfect example of senior level decision making and inability, effecting matters on the pitch.
