Former Coach In Bold Prediction On Newcastle – Everton Game

8:30 am, Friday, December 25th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 31 Comments

BBC Pundit and former Newcastle coach Mark Lawrenson thinks that Newcastle are still a very fragile team – even at home – and he predicts we will lose 2-1 against Everton tomorrow in the Boxing Day game.

Mark had even been positive on Newcastle last week and he had thought we would make it three wins in a row against bottom of the table Aston Villa – but after going ahead with a rare goal from captain Fabricio Coloccini – we couldn´t hold onto the lead in the second half.

It ended up 1-1 and it was effectively 2 points dropped.

This is what Mark has said about tomorrow´s first festive game of the holiday season:

“I expected Newcastle to roll Aston Villa over and make it three wins on the run. But Villa came back to earn a point, highlighting that Newcastle are mentally fragile and sometimes physically fragile too.”

“But the 1-1 draw means it is three games without defeat which is important for their confidence.”

“Everton, for the ability they have got, are under-achieving. They have some real quality in that side, look really good on the ball and have got it right going forward.”

“But individually and collectively they need to improve defensively.”

Mark predicts a 2-1 win for Everton and he’s right – the fact we couldn’t hold onto a 1-0 lead against the bottom of the table side at St. James´ Park was telling.

Villa had only 3 draws and 3 points in their previous 15 games and that shows how Newcastle are still extremely fragile.

Maybe we can be stronger tomorrow – both mentally and physically – and get something out of this game?

We certainly need the points.

I Just open a personalised book entitled, “Newcastle United A History in Pictures.” Only looked at a few pages and memories are flooding back.

I do wish Ed wouldn’t call him an ex Newcastle coach.

Keegan tried to use him as a defensive consultant.

He was so rubbish at it , he only lasted a couple of months before Keegan chased him back to BBC’s “Bitch of the Day”.

Vurnon Anita claims he can see the squad is a lot stronger mentally than earlier in the season.

    They will need to be.

Evertonian sites are claiming Martinez will have his strongest squad for a couple of seasons to pick from.

Should be a belter game.(weather permitting – storm Eva is about )

I am sure Macca/ Ashley /Charnley and toon fans around the world , will be looking for a better return on the £54 million spent last summer, in the second half of the season. It’s not yet proving to be a brave new world but just another false dawn.
The pre season target of a top eight finish has now simply been replaced by the need to survive in the PL Macca has said that he will be delighted with a mid-table finish. Mid table mediocrity doesn’t sound to bad to me now as opposed to last summer.
Looking for positives we are unbeaten in the last three games and have beaten both Liverpool and Spurs. However with a note of realism we remain fourth bottom and two points above the relegation drop.
As a recipient of Charnley’s email last August we were targetting a top eight finish, as well as cup runs. Where are we now? Time for another bulletin.
Maybe there will be an update from Charnley of Ashley’s aspirations going forward- certainly January transfer activity would be welcomed in this respect. He did say he wanted to win trophies and compete in Europe. A win tomorrow and maybe it will be Ashley talking to the fans again with a New Year message. Yer right!
Newcastle have taken just 30 points from 36 games in 2015 and things have to improve in 2016 for it to be a brave new world and to avoid Championship football next season.
A Merry Christmas and three points tomorrow please.

The brave new world was just the old crap one under new management Ian. You where tricked.

Well one should know by now that Charnley just like our very own Jeff speaks monkey!

…the guy makes no sense. If you believe him then don’t come crying to us when you feel let down.

There’s a tale of 2 clubs Chelsea and Newcastle.
Both have wealthy sole proprietors .
The first time Mourinho departed it was solely on the say so of Abramovic , this time it was a football committe that did the deed , evedence that Roman has stepped back somewhat.
We have evidence that Ashley has stepped back also , with a much lighter hand on the tiller. This can only be a good thing.

Belfast – It ain’t over until the fat lady sings. Or in this case the Fat Man! The Jury are still out for me – I hope your wrong about the activity in the window.
Jib- That sounds like a good title for a football panto or maybe a book title. A tale of two Cities.

    A message from Macca:

    Merry Christmas

    from all at Newcastle United

On behalf of everyone at Newcastle United, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful Christmas.

The support you have given me, my staff and the players so far this season has been absolutely fantastic. We wanted to let you know how much we all appreciate it.

We are working hard on the training pitch today to be ready for the visit of Everton tomorrow and with you behind us, we are aiming to build on our results over the last few weeks against a very good side.
Have a great day and may I extend my best wishes to you for 2016 as we look to make St. James’ Park a fortress together.

    Merry Christmas!

  • 17 Jib // Dec 25, 2015 at 10:52 AM

I know we have been linked with Sime Vrsaljko from Sassuolo . However they have a young striker Gregoire Defrel who is in Paris talking to Bournemouth , there is talk of a straight swap for Manu Rivere , erm isn’t he our player ?

  • 18 jimiley // Dec 25, 2015 at 11:10 AM

7 wins from the last 36 games is top relegation form. The problem is not the managers but the way the club is run. Its the owner stupid. But can we expect the owner to sack himself? Hardly. We keep swirling around the plughole and eventually we will be sucked down it. The question is will we be sucked down it this year or in the next few years.??? Depressing stuff and one of the reasons I refuse to put money in the bandits pocket. Merry Xmas

There endeth the Christmas Broadcast from jimiley.

I shall echo my previous words given that the blog embraces people of all beliefs and disbelief so it’s not a given that Xmas greetings are universally appreciated. I will simply thank all that I have discussed, argued, etc., with for their participation and mentally stimulating exchanges and whatever holiday you are having and with whatever family you are enjoying, may it be one of peace.

I’d also like to thank Ed for his blog, the challenge of when to post the pithiest comment, the interminable mentions of former Managers and the endless Carroll & Austin features.

May whatever happens to you happen in a good way.

    Howay the Lads!

And Mark Lawrenson is a miserable useless gonad.

  • 22 Tsunki // Dec 25, 2015 at 11:26 AM

As for book titles, if we can manage to sell Willo and Tiote this January it could be a Sale of Two…. well you can see where I’m heading…

  • 24 Ian Toon // Dec 25, 2015 at 11:29 AM

We could do with a bigger British core to the squad. London press are running with James Collins of WHU to Sunderland but maybe just because of Sam connection. He would provide valuable experience to our defence. I would prefer James Tomkins but he would be a lot more expensive. WHU apparently need to sell in order to buy – sound familiar!

  • 25 Tsunki // Dec 25, 2015 at 11:32 AM

Ed won’t let this one go will he though. It was the rain Ed it was absolutely hossin’ it down and it turned it to their advantage, took the skill out of it completely otherwise I think it would have been an easy day.

I’m hopeful about tomorrow’s game for the simple fact that teams do not seem to travel very well over the Christmas period.
