Ayoze Perez had a decent chance after he had come on in the game against Aston Villa to score, but he missed the chance and it ended up 1-1.
If Perez had taken that chance it would have been the second game in a row he had hit the winner for us after he scored that sensational stoppage time goal at Spurs to get us an unlikely 2-1 win and all 3 points.
But hey – maybe Ayoze can score the winner for us tomorrow against Everton.
Ayoze Perez scoring stoppage time winner at Spurs
The Spaniard has made it very clear to everybody who will listen to him that his club is Newcastle United and he seems not to be interested in the interest of Tottenham and Manchester United.
And all that Ayoze is ever interested in is becoming a better footballer – not a bad goals for a young 22 year-old – and today in the Chronicle he has talked about that again:
“I always say I can be better.” “I just have to keep working and try to score more.” “I nearly scored against Aston Villa but I know I must work on things and be better.”
“We had a few chances to win against Aston Villa, but we didn’t take them.” “This can happen sometimes. We are still going forward though and this was still a small step in the right direction because we picked up a point and didn’t lose a game.”
“We have to prepare well against Everton. And that’s our goal now, to win this next game.” “It is a special game for us.” “Boxing Day is a good game for us to play.”
“So we want to work for it and try to take the points.” “Our only thoughts are still about climbing the table, getting points and getting better every game.”
Ayoze is another one of the few good stories at Newcastle this year – as he has continued to improve in the (very) famous black and white striped shirt of Newcastle.
But he’s still on low wages at the club and they are nowhere near what they should be for somebody who has contributed so much to Newcastle since he signed for us 18 months ago.
Lee Charnley and company should not be hesitating – but should be giving this lad a new and improved long-term contract – and the sooner the better.
We need to keep our best players at the club.
