We talked yesterday about Rob Elliot, who has been one of the few success stories at Newcastle this season and in his long interview he talked about his situation in the summer at Newcastle, when he was the number three choice goalkeeper behind Tim Krul and newly arrived Karl Darlow from Nottingham Forest.
As number three he wouldn’t´t have been on the bench and would find it hard to get any playing time.
But when Tim Krul was badly injured playing for the Netherlands in October and was out for the rest of the season with his ACL knee injury, Karl Darlow was also out injured.
Rob Elliot makes brilliant save last Saturday from Rudy Gestede
And to say that Rob Elliot has taken his chance is probably understating what has happened in the last nine games as Rob has played brilliantly for Newcastle.
This is some of what Rob said yesterday:
“I probably thought my career was over here in the summer.” “Not in a bad way. It’s just that I was not playing, I was down the pecking order with little prospect of breaking in.”
That was the situation but it’s just football. Nothing bad.”
“Looking back, it did look as if I was going to leave Newcastle but thank God I didn’t. This is all I have ever wanted. To stay here, to play.”
“I would stay here for the rest of my career if I could. I always wanted to stay long term and play regular first team football.”
“I always felt I was good enough to do that but it is just about getting that opportunity and actually proving that.”
“Of course, I do not think I am anywhere near that just yet after nine or ten games. You need to be playing years, like Tim has done.”
“But it has been a really good turnaround. It feels refreshing, almost re-energizing. To go from being not involved to playing every week has been a great experience.”
We need Rob to stay fit for the rest of the season and keep up the great form he has shown, which is turning his career around at Newcastle.
A good game this afternoon against Everton at home is what we need and perhaps we can get all 3 points against a good Everton side.
