Steve McClaren has just announced the Newcastle team for the tough home game against Everton this afternoon and both Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic start this game and come in for Siem de Jong and the injured Papiss Cisse respectively.

Teams:

Newcastle (4-4-2): Rob Elliot; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Paul Dummett; Moussa Sissoko, Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback, Georginio Wijnaldum; Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Kevin Mbabu, Cheick Tiote, Siem de Jong, Yoan Gouffran, Florian Thauvin, Ivan Toney

Everton (4-2-3-1): Tim Howard; Seamus Coleman, John Stones, Ramiro Funes Mori, Leighton Baines; Tom Cleverley, Gareth Barry (c); Aaron Lennon, Ross Barkley, Kevin Mirallas; Romelu Lukaku
Substitutes: Joel Robles, Brendan Galloway, Darron Gibson, Muhamed Besic, Leon Osman, Gerard Deulofeu, Arouna Kone

Referee: Lee Mason (Lancashire)

Ivan Toney is also on the bench today after returning from his short loan spell at Barnsley.

Newcastle will play an orthodox 4-4-2 system with our two young strikers up front – and we need some goals today.

Last season we won this fixture 3-2 and it turned out to be Alan Pardew’s last match in charge of Newcastle – so lets hope we can get another win – we need one.

This is what Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has said about today’s tough game:

“The draw las week was frustrating,” “But we’d have taken seven points before the Liverpool game at the start of December so now we move on to Everton.”

“They are a very good team with good players and a real balance to the side as well. They lost to Leicester last time out but, other than that, they are in good form and are usually a hard team to beat.”

“Roberto Martínez has done a terrific job in the three seasons he’s been there and they are a really tough side for any team. He’s shown that Everton have the ability not just to get into the top ten, but to challenge for Europe as well.”

The fans are pretty well split on the result of this game.

being another team who we expect to be difficult i’ve got confidence in a victory and chelski, villa, bournmouth, scums and norwich all appear to drop points only swansea getting all 3 so a win will be even bigger.

  • 7 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 26, 2015 at 4:55 PM

    😀

Liverpool just managed to do a monumental cock-up on the break: 4 or 1 defender with GK stranded up the pitch and Benteke managed to mess it up. Still won, but funny nonetheless, not to be missed on MOTD.

I hope Mclaren is thinking of putting Perez wide left forward as I can see us losing the midfield battle with 2 up top

Move Wijnaldum into the middle where he should be playing

We need to win as we are back in the bottom 3 again !!

  • 9 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 26, 2015 at 4:58 PM

Win and we go 15th, within 3pts of Everton in 11th. That has to rev the team up.

  • 10 catchy in norway // Dec 26, 2015 at 4:59 PM

i dont normally get involved in saying who we should sign, but i would love to throw Alan huttons name in the hat, i think him at right back and move Jaanmat up onto the RW position..

i think we should now be looking to put Thuavan on the LW. but he needs a much better LB to give him good back up..

  • 11 toonbrother // Dec 26, 2015 at 5:00 PM

sadly, with colocinni in the mix the probability of defeat is close to 100%

  • 13 MadisonToon // Dec 26, 2015 at 5:02 PM

Looking forward to this. Yes, we need to beat the poor teams in the league and try to snatch points off the top 6 when we can, but how we fare against the middle of the table teams will have the biggest effect on where we finish.

I also have a funny feeling that things will go well here with two+ goals out of our strikers and maybe another one chipped in from Sissoko/Gini or even Thauvin off the bench. They will score as I can’t see our defence keeping a clean sheet so we’ll need to focus on attack and outscoring them to pick up all three points. HWTL.

sisokko will have a crap game today as usual i believe. thinks too highly of himself. never puts in a tackle and always backs out of 50-50 challenges. 1 good game in every 5.

i think we’ll lose today. lukaku will murder colo and mbemeba.

So do you guys think it’s for tactical reasons Mitro and Perez are starting or is it because of the way Steve go about a game?

    Midfield is hiding!

Colback and poor man’s Kante (Anita) aren’t good enough.

I think can see what SDJ brings. Cool head on the ball, organisation from the front, communication and as for workrate, he works a damn sight harder than Mitrovic.

  • 65 davis_toons // Dec 26, 2015 at 5:51 PM

Someone needs to BOSS the Midfield.

Or we needed someone like Aleksandar Mitrovic to hold up the ball upfront. He is not doing it either.

Cheick Tiote needs to come on.

Perez utter shite so far, nothing he tries is working. Mitro doing a better job of holding it last 10.

Frustrating stuff. poor pass Sissoko, needless foul by dummy Dummet – the worst PL left-back I”ve seen.

  • 86 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:10 PM

Dummett is definitely the weakest player in this team. There is no balance on our left side. But we have no one reliable there. Thauvin is unproven.

  • 87 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:11 PM

    Janmaat should be off.

  • 88 Dagga // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:11 PM

As crap as we are have a sneaky feeling we might pinch this one. Everton have a habit of passing the opposition of the park with not much end product and then drifting out of the game in the latter stages.

  • 89 TheToonKing // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:12 PM

  • 101 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:19 PM

Mbemba is our only defender of note. Colo siply can’t handle a physical presence and is getting rag-dolled. Dummet is basically basic shite and Janmaat has decided to put his daft head on this evening, running around like a mad man and, constantly out of position and lucky not to be off.

Should’ve started with Mitro and SDJ up top.

  • 103 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:20 PM

Janmaat is a red card waiting to happen. Dummett is a league 1 left back. Our team has no balance on the pitch. Colback is very limited. Tried hard but is a championship player at best. If we don’t get a dominating centre mid and left back in January,we’ll probably go into the last game of the season to see if we are safe.

  • 104 jimiley // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:21 PM

We are showing our new resolve and class. We can nick this by a goal against a decent Everton team. Pretty even so far and very entertaining.

  • 105 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:22 PM

Mitro had an okay 15min spell where he did the least I expect of him, hold the ball up, doesn’t do enough off the ball, but neither has Perez tonight. Mitro needs 3-4 chances to score 1 goal, needs to improve on that.

  • 106 El Sleeve // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:23 PM

Janmatt = total liability, red card waiting to happen just like at Swansea when Steve naive didn’t take him off before he was sent off.

    Dummet struggles wth distribution terribly.

Colback = rubbish set pieces and very little else in his locker. Creates zilch.

Wijni – why is our only top class player always playing out of position and being so wasted by clueless SM when we need goals.

Red Card for Janmaat? ..Properly the Ref miss it. Lucky us.

  • 121 toonking // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:31 PM

I missed some of the first half due to connection problems but from what I have seen so far during the first half I’ve seen another of them performances we’re becoming known for all the time.

our team consistently getting compact into the centre with very little creativity at all.

We all keep questioning why we can’t win against teams such as villa and it’s not that hard to see really, the problem consistantly lies on having such an awful width. Teams only ever need to use one player in the width because we don’t use that width to begin with and whilst these strikers might not be scoring much it’s never going to be that easy in the first place because of such awful creativity.

  • 122 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 26, 2015 at 6:32 PM

McClaren out for me. Choosing not to make any subs until the 85th minute is baffling and screams of either a lack of faith in the bench players or a lacking of tactical knowledge. Perez should have come off around 55/60th minute as he was clearly not up to pace today, thought he should have bought Thauvin on for Sissoko as well around the 70th min since Everton were struggling with our crosses. Tiote should have come on for one of Anita or Colback in the last ten as well. But no, Steve leaves on a team full of knackered players and we concede at the death. Chances are 90% of these will start on Monday. No faith in him to pick them up

Proof that improvement is coming is that, apart from. The first 30 minutes where Perez was absolutely suicidal, I couldn’t fault anyone’s game really, even coalsack. I will go for Mbemba then Elliot MoM. Mbemba is a class act.

I agree, we do have the workings of a very good team, and on another day the result could have been quite different, but when your manager is telling all the world you are just not good enough it really does effect the players.

I will say this; we played some very good football second half and deserved more, but hey this is football, lets just get to the next match with heads held high.

  • 211 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:35 PM

Colback made our best chance and if it wasn’t for a great Howard save would have an assist, he’s not great, but he played more to the standard he did 1st half of last season in the 2nd half tonight, pushed on and contributed going forward.

We should go at games gun blazing, it suits us, when we try feeling our way in and the opposition just go for it from the kick-off, we get caught out and struggle to get up to speed, once we match intensity we do better.

  • 212 ilovetoon8788 // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:35 PM

  • 216 TikiTakaAcca // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:37 PM

    Embarrassing.
Mclaren is to mostly blame for that calamity display.
Playing 4-4-2 against Everton who love to keep the ball, are you having a laugh?
Tiote was desperately needed this game.

Wijnaldum still LM when he could be played the furthest forward of a midfield 3?
    De Jong = 3 starts = 7 points.
De Jong dropped = loss again.

The players are also to blame for their lack of ability to do the basics right.
Nobody closing down until they get inside our box.
I don’t rate Anita AT ALL but today he was the only player willing to put a foot in.
Coloccini CONSTANTLY charging out of defence to not get the ball leaving gaps like he does every week.

The problems are so easy to sort out to balance the team and get the performances right.

Mclaren is a donkey who won’t change the most important parts.
Playinh 4-4-2 today is up there with one of the worst managerial decisions i’ve seen.

Perez is a brilliant player, but he becomes completely ineffective if we don’t have the ball.

Joke of a manager and some of the players are also jokes as well.

    Diabolical.

No positives to take from today.

guess I turned it off a tad too early.

As my early post said I wasn’t really expecting a result on paper but why did we have to concede last minute.

    LGFU

Anita holding onto the ball is only a good thing when your team is ahead and the manager wants to defend it’s not any good when you’ve got no creative player wide and doesn’t take away the fact he’s never in the centre of the 18 yard box to finish chances a striker might have missed.

and there were those who said Martinez was a poor manager, on that evidence today, we should have went for him when we had the chance

    Ochytoon

I concur i feel that S Mac should have subbed more and kept the team a bit fresher for the upcoming game that is only 2 days away now.

The whole thing stinks of John Carver type management and i for one after 20 years of supporting the team have had enough of it.

    Catchy /Jesper,
agreed Jesper. If a Pardew side had put in that first half Catchy would be holding no punches in his assessment.

Lots of peeps saying they have had enough but still they keep filling the ground. Build it and they will come.

  • 233 Tsunki // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:47 PM

I am more disappointed with the comments on here than with the team. I am one of the last to be associated with positivity with this squad, but I thought on balance we stood up well with an Everton side who actually had the nerve to swagger in the first half. Yes we had chances, but do did they. The elation they showed at the end mirrored our disappointment – they knew they had nicked the game against the odds. No shame in today, and we are a much less fragile side, just weeks ago we feared crystal palace!

Basing it on watching him and counting how many times he fails to hit the target, hits it straight at the keeper or fails to get a shot away. The bloke needs 3 or 4 good chances to score 1 and that aint good enough, he only gets leeway because he’s seen as a bit of a personality that has ingratiated himself to the fans – Cisse or Riviere miss the chances he does and they’d be coming under fire from all angles.

He isn’t the solution, unless he becomes a much better finisher sharpish and quits his mid-game moping,

  • 237 Tsunki // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:51 PM

If we had been able to start the same as before, Perez mitrovic and Thauvin as subs, We could have done this one. Never mind. We look like we are actually getting somewhere. Dont forget we beat Spuds and Liverpool so no points dropped really

but come on mate, even you must see we play much better now.
i dont think we have bad players, i dont think we have bad coaches, i think it is more down to lack confidence and trusting kids up front with not much experience.

for me the team and squad are not balanced enough, to many CM type players, Thuavan will be a great help when he starts games

  • 239 John Tudor // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:52 PM

More Ashley is king better the devil you know and Austin in drivel to come

  • 240 toonking // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:52 PM

For a number of years strikers and defenders have been our biggest demand when our creativity in the midfield is itself just as big a problem.

obatan- apart from speed what else?
marvo- how he’s still here god knows
goofy- a striker who we’d attempted to use as winger due to such crap
    arrons- injury prone
    de jong- injury prone
sissoko- 1 good game then a bunch of bad ones and probably playing for himself when you consider how much he wants a CL team
cabbella- couldn’t ever cope with the pace of premier league
thauvin- looks to be another cabbella but perhaps a more XP wideman would help him learn to adapt.
wigi-wasted as another wideman when he could be used as a CAM ready and waiting for those chances a striker missed.

  • 241 JamesToon // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:54 PM

We were poor today and Everton deserved the win. They created more, controlled the game, yes we had a few chances, but so did they. It felt like we were playing at Goodson in the first Half it was embarrassing.

Get rid of this counter attack rubbish, you can only play it against big teams away. At home and away against lesser teams including Everton (at home) we need to be matching them for possession st least, creating chances and more and not sit back.

The closing down is abysmal in this team. It was so easy for Everton to pass it around. Playing 4-4-2 doesn’t make a difference imo, even if we played 4-3-3 they would have still dominated the game. It’s a matter of the players hassling and hunting in packs to win the ball back high up the pitch, there was absolutely none of that today, just jogging towards the player in possession isn’t gonna work and Everton will pass it around so easy

  • 242 Blofal // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:55 PM

It was a mistake starting Perez. We would have been more solid in that first half with De Jong up front and Perez coming on in the second half to terrorise a tired defence. Perez was poor in the first half and often gave the ball away.

Also De Jong isn’t an impact sub. We didn’t make a sub until the 86th minute because we only had Thauvin on the bench who was capable of changing the game. But when McClaren was about to bring him on with 20mins to go Perez started looking good as Everton’s defence tired.

Against WBA I would start with Mitro up front and Thauvin and Sissoko on the wings. Then a 3 man midfield of SDJ, Colback and Anita behind. Gini looked knackered at the end of today and will need a rest.

We shouldn’t be in this mess. The slug chose not to invest when it was needed, appointed idiots to run his club, who in turn hired a mediocre manager and unproven players. We’ll be very lucky if we avoid relegation this season.

  • 245 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:57 PM

    Hail,
If Nitro converts one every 3 or 4 chances that puts him up there with the best in the Prem. Lukaku this season converts 33% of his chances and he has the top conversion rate. Mitro in his first season for a team that has nobody creating regular chances to his strength is doing well.

  • 246 toonking // Dec 26, 2015 at 7:58 PM

    catchy 238

you can’t say our squad is not a balanced squad when it’s near enough the same squad we had during the pardew era.

Pardew had Ba and mac has mitro
Pardew had cabaye and mac has wiji
Pardew had mbiwa and mac has mbemba

  • 247 Hail Wor Ashley // Dec 26, 2015 at 8:00 PM

I said 3 or 4 good chances, ya know where you’d expect a PL ST to convert, not chances, guilt edged chances! Stop trying to weasel.

  • 248 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 26, 2015 at 8:00 PM

    Hail,
If Mitro scored with more than one every 4 chances he would have a better conversion ratethan aguero, and only worse than 4 players in the Prem.

  • 249 davis_toons // Dec 26, 2015 at 8:02 PM

At third quarter of the game…coming to a close. Sissoko was so tired already and really needed a Sub.

Properly Cheick Tiote should have come on or even Gouffran due to his height.

  • 250 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 26, 2015 at 8:03 PM

    Hail,
To Weasel? I’d struggle to pick out 12 gilt edged chances Mitro has had. you also didn’t say that, you said chances. Aguero has converted 1 in 4 this season.

I’m not trying to “weasel out” of anything. Just pointing out the problems with your reasoning.
