Newcastle Lose 1-0 – Things Looking Bleak Again

5:20 pm, Monday, December 28th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

Things are starting to look bleak again for Newcastle and as luck would have it our Man of the Match for the last three game Rob Elliot felt ill in the warm up and in came Karl Darlow for his first Premier League game ever.

And after 78 minutes Karl made a bad error when he let in Steven Fletcher’s header which slid underneath his body and for the second game running a late goal left Newcastle with no points and this was to a West Brom side that earned their first win in six league games.

Unfortunately Karl just didn’t look the part and seemed extremely nervous throughout this game – so it looks like Newcastle will now need to bring in a new goalkeeper before the game at Arsenal on Saturday – so for the second season running we have goalkeeper problems.

Rob Elliot withdrew because of illness – so maybe he will be OK to start next Saturday but Karl just didn’t look like a good backup goalkeeper for Newcastle.

steven fletcher after scring

And with Norwich beating Aston Villa 2-0 at home they move 3 points clear of us and Swansea got a good 0-0 draw at Crustal Palace and move 2 points clear of Newcastle.

So that means in 38 league games this year we finished with only 7 wins and finished the year with one draw in three games against mediocre sides – and we are real relegation candidates half way through the season.

And to make matters worse Vurnon Anita was taken off with a hamstring injury in the first half and it doesn’t look good – yet another injury for Newcastle this season.

We did have a good appeal for a penalty turned down when Jonny Evans appeared to pull down Aleksandar Mitrovic and left back Paul Dummett and Coloccini struck the woodwork in the 54th minute of the game – so we didn’t have too much luck today.

But after beating Liverpool and Tottenham in successive games we have now earned just one point form bottom club Aston Villa, Everton and West Brom.

West Brom started the game 3 points above us and now are 6 points clear and we are starting to be marooned in 3rd bottom place,

Next up is Arsenal at the Emirates.

West Brom: Myhill; Olsson (Gardner, 18), Yacob, Evans, Morrison (Berahino, 70), Anichebe (Lambert, 88), Brunt, McAuley, Fletcher, Dawson, Sessegnon.
Subs not used: Lindegaard; Chester, Gamboa, McManaman.

Newcastle: Darlow, Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini, Dummett, Sissoko, Colback (Thauvin, 86), Anita (Tiote, 27), Wijnaldum, Mitrovic, Perez (de Jong, 72).
Subs not used: Elliot, Mbabu, Lascelles, Gouffran.

Goal: Fletcher 78

They said Elliot has a lung virus on the telly. He didn’t injure himself. We gave up 16 corners! That indicates something about possession I would think. We were dross in attack again although we should have had a penalty. Poor refereeing. Poor match. The gap to 17th will open up now with Arsenal and Man U next for us.

  • 2 ochytoon // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:24 PM

Why do people keep screaming for us to buy British. As if Colback, and Dummett aren’t the worst players in our team.

  • 3 almondrichie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:24 PM

he main reason why newcastle are in this position is becuase of the 50,000 fans….don’t anyone blame ashley or regime….they would still go week in week out if ashley is running a brothel at st.james park…..some fans will say that its the name NUFC that matters not the ladies…

FSAKE quit going to matches idiots

  • 4 nufc786 // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:25 PM

Two games in the space of three days…
One would think they could make use the depth of the squad.. Put some fresh legs on or swap things round…

A natural winger who could put crosses in to a box…

put a number 10 who plays LM in his natural position

    but no…

  • 5 eddyinpoole // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:26 PM

this game was the worst ive seen for a long time, absolutely shite.always second best against a very average side.we made them look like Barcelona thats how piss poor we are.The blame must start with the manager who is clueless and a lot of the team are not prem class.Sort it out Ashley before its too late.

  • 6 almondrichie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:26 PM

you are making me laugh….just with 2 english player in the squad do u expect a change…comeon…see leichester, watfor, westham, even bournmouth, norwich….even they are above us…..don’t get blinded by cheap foreign goods…they quality will wear as we can see through our eyes now

  • 7 Rotonda heights // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:27 PM

possibly the stupidest comments I’ve heard in a long time.

3 of our worst players today colback, dummet and darlow are english / british.

Back in the day owen, barton, butt, duff, given, saylor were no better and took us down.

I would love a Kante or a Mahrez. Your stupid racist, xenophobic, stereotypical claptrap is pathetic. Get a life.

  • 8 cyprus // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:27 PM

Our squad IS paper thin after all.

Gigantic loss of form by two key players (Perez, Wini) and there’s nothing we can do about it. If we had the luxury they should’ve been benched weeks ago. Sissoko must be knackered. SDJ not up to speed. Darlow plays in goal and is as scared as I would be. Mitro is a kid with a future who isn’t ready to carry a relegation threatened team. Cisse must be sick of being behind him, even though he too hasn’t been able to carry us. Thauvin is worth maybe 3 million, he should’ve been a game changer at that price FFS.

Conclusion: we need 5 star players or else. And Carr, let me (I’m on the YouTube, just say the word) or Kets or the tea lady pick em.

  • 9 U.S Magpie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:27 PM

If we don’t strengthen the team in Jan we are screwed.
I tried to give players like Colback the benefit doubt but when you look at our midfield who is the play maker. Where is the Cabaye in our team, Tiote and Colback look useless and Sissoko loses the ball to many times. We need a keeper / CB / play maker in the middle and a striker that knows where the net is. Most teams would call this the spine of the team, I call it the only hope we have of staying in the Prem, Arsenal next away so that match is over, West Brom could of won that game today by four or five goals, we where lucky that was not the score.

  • 10 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:27 PM

No, it is most definitely not the fans fault. Any fan who claims that just causes a greater split and gives Ashley greater power, divide and conquer.

The blame lies squarely at the owner, board, management and players. Not the fans.

  • 11 Jib // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:28 PM

The usual well OTT over – reaction on here.

Hysteria is alive and kicking and thriving in blogland.

Perhaps the stories of NUFC being after the Marseilles and France goalie Steve Mandanda are not too far off the mark

  • 12 jimiley // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:28 PM

I think most fans really overestimate our players. Most are Championship players and we do not have one top player. By that I mean a player who would get into a top 4 team. The last one was Cabaye. Why should we have a decent team when we always sell our best players?
Perez is a finisher and nothing else. He is a luxury when we create nowt. Mitrovic and Riviere are shit.
No creativity in the midfield. End of. Anita the midget and Colback. Are you kidding???
    Enough said about the “defence”
Our best players are Sissoko and Wijnaldum. Sissoko is not a top player because he is lazy. the other guy may develop into a good player but we will never know that at the toon because the rest of the team is crap.
I sense we are going in the wrong direction under the fat controller after 8 years. Why do 50K mug punters keep lining his pockets. How much evidence do you need????

  • 13 nut meg // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:28 PM

The window is getting more important as the games go on.We seen the reason today why we are reported to be after a goalkeeper. Darlow was really really poor and doesn’t look anywhere near a PL keeper.Perez doesn’t seem like the same player to me,body language a bit iffy, maybe his head’s been turned. Why does he bring Thauvan on with just a few minutes to play? That’s what teams do when they’re trying to kill time not when you need a goal! I’m losing interest rapidly now,January might kill it all together.

  • 14 Rotonda heights // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:28 PM

How about we have a buffoon as a manager and an english one at that.

  • 15 optimistic prime // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:29 PM

Pretty much the result most fans expected.

It’s embarrassing that it’s as plain as day what’s wrong with the team yet the ex England manager can’t see it.

We hardly create anything whilst inviting teams onto us, playing 2 DCM and 2 CMs out wide is ridiculous. Nowt out wide and no space in the middle to create anything.

Nothing at all comes down the left and 9 times out of 10 Sissoko and Janmaat can’t even get the basics right.
Is there any point discussing how useless Mc’s central pairings are?

We’re to slow to move the ball and when we carry it players often have to check to see if they have any options which a lot of times they don’t, making our play dis jointed with no real flow.

Perez shouldn’t be starting IMO and I can’t understand how SDJ gets dropped after we got 7pts in the 3 he started.
His displays whilst not mom gave the platform and confidence for others to go on and win the game.

McLarens current game plan is straight out the Pardew play book, keep it tight and hope individual skill will nick it.

He keeps saying we need to improve but does nothing to improve the side or play, atleast it looks like he does nothing.

It’s half way through the season so fair to judge Mc IMO and I’d say dissapointing and no where near good enough!

Can’t see 2016 being a year to look foward to regarding NUFC

    Ashley out!

  • 16 TheToonKing // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:29 PM

    Schteve has to go.

Win or loose, the same unchanged side with half of them out of position and the other half part-time footballers at best.

  • 17 firebug666 // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:30 PM

I have to agree with you 100%

I supported Newcastle United who use to be a football team and although we never won anything the lads would give their all every week.

What we have now is an advertising vessel for Ashley’s other interests, we are associated with loan shark companies who fill their coffers of the misery of others. and finally it has a football team built from a collection of cheap or free imports that although are willing, just cannot compete in this league.

    Sad days for Newcastle Fans.

Sack the Mac or relegation here we come…

  • 19 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:30 PM

As for the English players argument, some English players would improve us, not because they are English but because they are good players. Austin, Townsend are not them.

if you like it or not you are going to live the rest of the life like me seeing newcastle going way down the tiers of english league….we are falling like leeds…

i do take back that foreign players are not faulty…atleast now do u accept that steve macclaren must be out of the club…answer this question.????? BECAUSE MANY OF YOU HERE SEEMS TO HAVE A CRUSH ON STEVIEE THE BALDIEEE

  • 21 manxpie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:31 PM

Rotonda well even with them players the squad was shocking and has been since Ashley has been here full stop and we all know that the next manager will be the same
wats the bets the fans turn on mcclaren first?
without investment season on season we are gonna be relegation fodder look at villa
you keep blaming managers but Wat hope do they have with shocking squads season on season as well as there best players getting sold without replacements but we still go round in circles wishing for the same thing when the man in charge of that wish gets away Scot free!

  • 22 Jib // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:33 PM

It’s starting to look like being twixt us and Swansea for the dreaded 3rd relegation slot !!!

  • 23 manxpie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:33 PM

Rotonda plz explain how Dummet was 1 of our worst players?
    Wat about wiji?

  • 24 ochytoon // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:34 PM

Norwich have a lot of British players.
Villa have a lot of British players.
Sunderland have a lot of British players.

It really doesn’t matter where the players are from at the end of the day. A good manager can make anyone up their game. Do you honestly think that Leicester’s players are better than those at Arsenal or City. They’re not but they have a manager who’s got them playing in a system that suits them and utilizes their strengths.

  • 25 NoahJ // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:34 PM

Darlow reminded me so much of Jak Alnwick today- flappy, and felt we’d concede with every shot. Now I understand why we’ve been linked to a GK in the transfer window

Colocinni excellent today, but poor performances across the pitch. the number of corners conceded, and the number of times the ball was cleared off the line was ridiculous; the whole team was devoid of any ideas, creativity or connectivity between midfield and strikers. Feel we need to buy a playmaker and a left back, and another striker (I like mitro and perez, but they’re both very young- we need a proven goalscorer now)

  • 26 West Lancs Geordie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:36 PM

Somebody saw Mr Carr hiding in the toilets. Isn’t he the chap that brought in all these value for money “foreigners”. Is he still with the club. Funny how we only hear about these sort of people when Cashley is making money out of him e.g Debuchy & Cabaye.
WE don’t need prima donnas like Thauvin when we are in a spot like this. We need hard working grafters to play like we did against Liverpool never giving them a second on the ball working as a team. Surely our squad is better than Swansea, Bournmouth, Norwich & should be much better than Leicester & Watford given the money Ashley has. But we must spend it wiser & who is going to go to any of the bottom three teams. They are shite!

  • 27 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:36 PM

    Howay Jib,
Rather than claiming hysteria, how about you provide an analysis of the game. Tell me the positives from the game. Point out where the gradual improvement is.

How many shots did West brom have? Did they double their average for the season? We created 1 good chance for Mitro and Jevans rugby tackled him.

  • 28 almondrichie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:36 PM

everyone here seems to forget that with no wijnaldum, mitrovic, mbemba, thauvin alan pardew managed to get 27 points in his first 19 games last season… did he did it with gouffran, williamson etc who are worse than our current team players…..

we are not asking for a top 8….atleast with this aquad we can surely be 10-13th atleast….

  • 29 Rotonda heights // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:37 PM

    Darlow: out of his depth
Janmatt: lose count of number of times he gives the ball away every match
Colo: decent today but no long term solution
    M’Bemba: a shining light
Dummet: Solid but no distribution quality
Sissoko: always takes on 1 too many
Anita: under rated, would be ok in a ”footballing” team.
    Colback: Just creates absolutely nothing.
Wijni: Stupidly continually played out of position
    Perez: running on empty now.
Mitro: no pace or skill on the deck and so far not great on crosses either.

  • 30 Jib // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:37 PM

David de Gea just demonstrating how vital a top grade goalie is.
Just remember how many times Shaymus John James Given was our player of the season !!!

  • 31 GeordieTwo // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:37 PM

An attack without a proper AM is useless as we see match after match. We have Sissoko and Wij trying from the wings but it’s not enough. The strikers are too young and inexperienced but they get very little support. Too few players in the box. McLaren’s “system” doesn’t work.

  • 32 West Lancs Geordie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:37 PM

Have you forgotten all the Ashley out protests we’ve had over the years? I seem to remember a lot of them and I also remember that they achieved absolutely nothing. So what’s the point in getting on Ashley’s back for the umpteenth time. It doesn’t bother him and only creates a hostile and negative environment which we really don’t need atm

  • 39 GeordieTwo // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:42 PM

Well said Rotonda @29. This is not a good enough team for the Prem. The owner remains clueless after 8 years, going on 9. Might as well not have a board because they are useless as well. Stop going to home games or watch us go down. Why not just mail your money to Ashley since you give it away to watch dross?

  • 40 almondrichie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:42 PM

i agree with you….how the hell people tell colback and dummet was useless today as if others were…

    darlow—not finished yet
perez—he was taking so much time to react and killed our attack and he was totallly sh!T against everton
janmaat—useless SOB…have no clue going forward
tiote–have no idea where he is
wijnal—-he was played out of position so cant talk much abt him

How the fcuk does Carr get paid to do a job he can’t do.

He’s brought so much shite to the club its unbelievable he still has a job. Our squad has too many poor players, most of which play out of position.

Fcuk me most important position is CM to create chances, spread the abll etc and we play 2 DM’S FFS

No doubt about it we need a ball playing CM as priority, a quick LB a LW and a striker that has far to much pace for his own good.

  • 43 GeordieTwo // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:45 PM

Colo and Dummett had about 10 crucial blocked shots between them. The goal was a weak one that Elliot would have had. Our system is worthless. You can’t attack with 4 or fewer players and hope to score in the Prem. De Jong did nothing when he came on. Why give Thauvin only 5 minutes? What’s the point to that?

  • 44 colwell // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:45 PM

  • 45 West Lancs Geordie // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:46 PM

    Agree RH
Apart from Wijni who I think should be played in the hole behind the strikers if we had alternatives, which we haven’t, through Injuries & the main reason lack of depth in the squad. Perez was a long term buy initially & had to be plunged in. Metro is just an overpriced thug. Too much is expected of Sissoko & Wijni.
Plain & simple we are just not good enough from the Owner, through the management team & the playing squad sadly

  • 46 Rotonda heights // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:46 PM

2 words:- Claudio Ranieri. Top of the table, no superstars but an amazing work ethic. A foreign manager who has been out of the premiership for 11 years has welded together a team of foreigners and a few englishmen who perform better than the sum of the parts.

This time last season did anyone think vardy and Mahrez would do what they have done.

We have just spent 54M on 4 players. MBemba and Wijni look good the other 2 not so much.

Carr needs looking at but blaming the foreigners when for example colback is so poor and SM’s mismanagement is shocking, is too easy a scapegoat

I’d back McClaren against Pulis any day.

With these amazing powers of prediction/anticipation, can you please suggest your solution to the problem of the our latest ‘setback – a stepping stone to greater things’ as you used to say. If the team are good enough, and so is the coach – what do you suggest is going so wrong ?

  • 56 Jib // Dec 28, 2015 at 5:53 PM

As soon as Anita tweaked his hammy it should have become obvious to all how great his contribution is.
Tiote to his credit kept it simple when he came on
Dummett better than some I’ve seen handling Stéphane Sessègnon
    Janmaat no complaintss
    Colo was a rock
Chancel , it’s hard too believe how young he is.
I suspect Ginger Jack is playing through injury but he was steady away
Wijnaldum clearly was picked out by Pulis as our danger man he was usually double teamed and on occasion had 3 to beat.
Sissoko always comes up short against physical teams
    Mitro was workmanlike no more
Perez should have been in the hole not trying to make Mitro look better
Darlow – oh dear – not his fault – he seemed to generally play better 2nd half.

Colback and Gini were the two worst on the park today. You could probably include Darlow with them as well.

People will moan about certain players regardless, and Dummett falls into this category. He isn’t good, but he did okay today given how we set up.

There are very few who agreed with the team selection today. Rotonda has a good grasp of the game, he and I differ because I am more pragmatic and he is more into the offensive side. I respect his opinion on many topics though.

English isn’t the answer, just like it isn’t about the long ball or short ball. It is about the right ball, and the right player.

We have enough talent, but Macca refuses to play to our strength, much like Pardew before him.

    @rotonda heights

i agree i am not saying colback and dummet was better in any way…after seeing the score sheet i was gutted for thauvin and mbabu not playing…all day i was expecting that steve would surely bring in thauvin and mbabu….
but at the same time except mbemba and coloccini all others were equally liable for the loss today….

and usually when a new manager is apoointed the spirits of the fans go up and atleast i hope with that confident we might stay up…the atmosphere here at the club is like one in the graveyard…need to change that…..remember mackems changing a manager every year half way through the season and surviving…thats what i am asking for….survival is enough with new manager

    Lilongwe Geordie @58

hell of a post mate…i too agree with u…

    No worries.

So if all our players performed as admirably as you say, if we only bring in a centre forward (as you suggested earlier) how do we stay up given we let a team who are as poor as us dominating game’s, dominate us?

Rotonda Ok then Wat about Pearson then he started that run or maybe o’leary he had a good season once or maybe the Ipswich or reading managers that had great seasons
your problem is that you jump on instant success
case in point Mbabu who would also be out of position btw
Leicester are a well run club
Southampton are a well run club in fact most prem clubs are well run clubs
us, villa and the scum aren’t and look where we are!

  • 67 Moonraker15 // Dec 28, 2015 at 6:13 PM

    Geordie two
and others whO advocate staying away from games!
When will you realise that hit won’t make any difference; Ashley needs to stay in the PL because of the TV money and ww exposure which is main revenue source!
The worry is that the guys running the club don’t know fcuk all and can’t see the obvious and appear to be looking for another winger!
We’re in deep shit I fear!

Wow again we lost, “well no surprise really”. We need to bring in Charlie Austin a proven goal scorer from long and short distance Mitro is hopeless he cant even score from smack bang in front of the goal. We dont need another winger poor old sissoko and winjum they have to run the length of the pitch to help this hopless side they should be making runs from the center of the park not defence. Our defenders need to keep back to defend not try and score goals. Any monkey could coach better than Mcclaren cant he see the problems and this fu k useless talent scout rubbish. Man this club is going no where fast its a sinking ship. We need a leader maybe if you change the captain up it might change the mindset of the club and player might actually start to respect everyone else.
