Newcastle Unchanged For West Brom Test

west brom emblemnufc emblem

Steve McClaren has just announced the Newcastle side for the second game in less than 48 hours as we face West Brom at The Hawthorns today in a game that kicks off at 3:00 pm.

The team is the same one that lined up against Everton on Saturday so no rest for any of the players.

Teams:

West Brom (4-1-4-1): Boaz Myhill; Craig Dawson, Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson, Chris Brunt; Jonny Evans; Stephane Sessegnon, Darren Fletcher (c), Claudio Yacob, James Morrison; Victor Anichebe
Substitutes: Anders Lindegaard, James Chester, Cristian Gamboa, Craig Gardner, Callum McManaman, Saido Berahino, Rickie Lambert

Newcastle (4-4-2): Rob Elliot; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Paul Dummett; Moussa Sissoko, Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback, Georginio Wijnaldum; Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Kevin Mbabu, Jamaal Lascelles, Cheick Tiote, Yoan Gouffran, Florian Thauvin, Siem de Jong

Referee: Mike Jones (Cheshire)

We’re a little surprised there is not room in the team for Siem de Jong and Cheick Tiote – who both need games – but maybe they will come in during the second half.

And a fit-again Lascelles comes in on the bench and there’s no room for Ivan Toney so Mitro’s ankle must be fine.

This is what Steve McClaren said on nufcTV about this game:

“We have to recover,” “It’s tough for the players but mentally and physically we’ve got to recover, we’ve got to go again.” “It’s a big test on Monday; I’m very, very interested to see how we react after the Everton game.”

“Do we take the belief and confidence from our performance? Do we take it into Monday’s game, which is a massive game?” “Like Robbie Elliot said before the Everton game, we’ve got two games in three days, we’ve got no excuses: let’s go.”

“I feel so, so sorry for the players, because they gave everything.” “They were magnificent, especially in that second half, and didn’t deserve to lose – maybe didn’t deserve to win, but didn’t deserve to lose.”

“It was a terrific second half, a great advert for football, and I think the crowd showed their appreciation at the end, which was magnificent.” “If we carry on like this – performances, attitude, the way we fight for things – we’ll have a better second half to the season than the first.”

There are almost as many fans think we can win this game as think we will lose it.

That’s a really ballsy team selection there Schteve. Definition of insanity springs to mind.

It seems madness not having Toney on the bench with Mitrovic an obvious doubt to last the whole match!

Should be a true test of how good our fitness coach is.

This match should be something that Mitrovic, Gini, Mbemba and Thauvan haven’t experienced before

Mitro leads the line carrying a ankle injury according to SSN.

Might as well play him until he can’t walk, then bring Tiote on upfront.

Maybe it’s a cunning plan from Steve to show Ashley that reinforcements are needed! remember redknapp with his 2 keepers on the bench lol

I do expect us to be matching West Brom on possession…am I being silly again?

I also expect us to be hammering West Brom, am deluded all over the place today

Very curious what de Jong has done to be dropped and what Thuavin has to do to get a game in a team with no wingers and a striker who needs service

Marveaux must be deemed as crap if he can’t make that bench!

West Brom are a dirty side, so play well and frustrate them.

wini in the left is not working at all and when will the dumb steve realise it…last two games whe looked morr threatening after thauvin came but he hardly plays for 5mins….shitty and worst selection…mbabu is clearly miles ahead of dummet, yet steve b@st stick to dummet….what kind of message does that send to the bench…no matter how bad players perform it will always be the same starting line up and don’t say that a spirited performance is enough….you need to get points no matter how bad you play…at the end of the day all that matter is points…hopeful coach and team staffs….I WOULD RATHER SEE US LOSE TODAY BY A VERY BIG MARGIN AND SACK STEVE THAN TO WITHSTAND HIS RUBBISH SELECTION FOR ANOTHER GAME….go go go newcastle…grant my wish and lose today as u always do..

I would have expected a few players to be rested, and some early second half subs to allow other players a chance to rest some aching muscles.

Playing the same team twice in two days just seems ludicrous, given the intensity of the League and we are away too.

This match now has the potential to be a complete disaster for us.

Hope they are just as tired.

Huge test for Mitro today especially vs what is effectively a back four of centre backs!

Colback vs Yacob in the middle, get the feeling Tiote will be needed 2nd half.

I’ll go for 1-1 draw and 8 yellow cards.

Thank God for that i was so worried we may play Thauvin and put Gini in the middle, the last thing we need now is to start creating things from the middle.
We should be proud that we have the 2nd lowest shots in the Prem, that comes from the partnership of Anita and Colback in the middle.

    Joke.

West Brom are the most physical team in the league, so let’s play Anita & Colback and bench Tiote.
    Let’s still play Wijnaldum LM.
    At least we’ll try hard.
    Dinosaur.

Another game where the class of Perez will be wasted as we’ll punt long balls because players are scared to show for a 5 yard pass.

So, same selection as Saturday. Let’s see how we approach it though. If we sit deep it will be a poor affair, if we press and attack we fan win this.

Would have preferred to see Thauvin in for Colback or Anita, but it is really how we approach it that will make the most telling difference.

why is dummett still in our first team?

No player that can only use one foot should be anywhere near a championship club, never mind a premier league club.

Also, the anita-colback combo is clearly ineffective, and leaves us exposed. Would rather tiote to either, or possibly tiote with de jong in a diamond

I wonder how long it took the Wally to come up with this one. This team is crying out for a manager. McClaren is a spectator like the rest of us, except he seems incapable of using his head.

Pulis is a long ball merchant.

But he realises that Anichebe always terrorises Coloccini, so he has decided to play him.

A ball rolled into Anichebe with his back to goal 8 yards out seems to ring a lot of bells …

No complaints from me. I have faith in the Mitro/Perez partnership.

Mbabu has been our best LB this season, so I am unsure why he hasn’t came back into the team, but considering his age & experience, I can understand why McClaren would opt for Dummett.

Dummet has put in more tackles and blocked more crosses than all our recent LB’s that’s his main job how many goals has hairdryer set up in his time here?
Don’t get the criticism Dummet gets tbh

Wijnaldum is so ineffective on the wing and he can’t tackle, why not try him as number 10 just behind mitrovic and play Perez in midfield

Put Perez on the left wing it gives him more time on the ball as well because we will lose the midfield battle AGAIN!!

Mclaren is just as dumb as Pardew and Carver for sticking with the same formation which starts to beg the question is Ashley picking the team ??

McClaren, does the penny ever drop for you or does it just fall infinitely in all that empty space in your head. Every single fan can see Colback/ Anita needs to be changed and Dummets not up to professional football. And Wini isn’t a left winger. Why not kill two birds with one stone and move Colback to left back and put Wini or Tiote in the middle or just play with one DM. Play Perez or Thauvin on the left as they’re tricky and can provide a bit width which might actually surprise WBA.

If we are losing ( well when) at least we have De Jong to bring on his power and pace will win the game for us.

On the bench today we have including the GK 5 defensive players i mean what the actual fcuk no doubt at all our squad is so p1ss poor relegation is a guaranteed, spending big probably won’t even work as we spend it on the wrong areas all the time.

I think SM needs saving from himself and urgently. Sadly though we wouldn’t get a progressive modern coach that we so desperately need as a replacement but rather another mediocre defensive long ball British dinosaur.

How would anyone who was even half asleep not see things need to be changed around after the Everton game.

Fatigue aside Dummet and Colback are as average as you can get and our one quality player is playing LM!!!!!!!

This is so reminiscent of when wally lost to croatia with no plan B in sight for 90 mins

The club stinks from top to bottom possibly with the exception of Cathro.
