There’s Not Much Hope For Newcastle Fans

8:56 am, Friday, January 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 73 Comments

It would be good to get off to a good start to 2016 – especially after last year was one of the worst fans have had to endure in the long 123 year history of Newcastle United – with just 7 wins and 30 points in our 38 league games.

That’s relegation form with a capital R.

But Newcastle are at Arsenal tomorrow and we have lost the last eight league games against the Gunners and add to that the fact that Arsenal have won six and drawn one of theit last seven league games at home and it looks  a home banker.

That’s what Newcastle fans think too.

How Will Newcastle Fare At Arsenal?

But of course you just never know with Newcastle and if we are to pull away from the relegation zone and survive for a second successive season – then we have to start picking up points in the most unlikeliest of games.

We cannot have poor results in our four league games in January, so this one is really important.

Comments welcome.

    I didn’t expect anything from

    I genuinely expect nothing from

This window is huge, I thought at the start of the season the window at the end of the season ( alleged 3rd window) but given where we are …..
Huge window, almost double patio doors !
Will we get the right players ? Not if history is repeated.

    Fingers crossed

  • 2 ToonMatt // Jan 1, 2016 at 9:16 AM

Priority this year from fans should be to drive Ashley out of the club, Make the parasite sell up!
Oh and happy new year everyone.

  • 3 jazzyp // Jan 1, 2016 at 9:19 AM

Come on edd first day in to the new year and it’s doom and gloom already !!
Ps have we signed anyone yet ??

    Morning jesper

Last roll of the dice for Ashley? We’ll know soon enough!

    scum bag out

  • 8 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 9:48 AM

Since Wenger applied his magic, we’ve always been outplayed by that team, but we’ve managed to get something against the odds, sometimes.

Carroll’s headed goal. Robert’s excellent goal on the counter. It can be done. Never is pretty from our point of view.

  • 9 WWSBRD // Jan 1, 2016 at 9:49 AM

    Happy new year

7 wins in 38 games in 2015 good lord but still look on the bright side…any suggestions on what that is?

  • 10 hibbitt // Jan 1, 2016 at 9:51 AM

    cyprus…….don’t hold your breath

  • 11 Ron Knee // Jan 1, 2016 at 9:57 AM

As I posted a bit earlier, our home match against Manure could be critical for McClaren – assuming we’re beaten by Arsenal and Watford.

  • 12 jazzyp // Jan 1, 2016 at 9:59 AM

    Happy new mate.
Yes I think he has no choice but to bring in players.
Whether that be the right quality because of our precarious position remains to be seen.
If he sticks with what we have I fear the worse so let’s hope for the best rather than fearing the worst

  • 13 firebug666 // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:00 AM

    Happy New Year to all.

I think we might see a couple of players leaving the club and maybe a couple more out on loan, but incoming players????

We all know the rules, if Charnley cannot get value pound for pound it isn’t going to happen, and as someone pointed out yesterday Charnley would struggle to buy a newspaper.

  • 14 hibbitt // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:03 AM

ron this lot wont sack him but he could walk my worry would be who would replace him another Dinosaur

  • 15 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:05 AM

    Happy New Year.

    Will follow your advice.

  • 16 Ron Knee // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:06 AM

Yes. If we did badly against Manure (assuming we lost to Arsenal and Watford) then McClaren would likely walk away.

  • 17 John Tudor // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:07 AM

if he walks and is replaced by another turd manger
will the fans see thru ashley’s charade and kick off big time

  • 18 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:08 AM

We’ll need luck, a good goalie, motivated players, good tactics (ok, scratch that) and some more luck. It’s possible.

  • 19 WWSBRD // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:08 AM

Players have to leave for us to get players don’t they? Squad registration is full from what I recall?

  • 20 firebug666 // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:09 AM

I don’t think we are to far away from that situation, even if SM doesn’t walk.

  • 21 Ron Knee // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:11 AM

Do you think they’d appoint Cathro? They got their fingers burned with Carver, of course. More likely a useless external appointment, as you say.

  • 22 Jib // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:18 AM

A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all.
We have to hope tha McClaren’s campaign to convince those that hold the purse strings that this is not the time for parsimony.
Alan Shearer came to us for a world record fee 3 weeks before he was 26 ,was with us 10 years and became the PL top scorer.
Development players are all very well , you will unearth a Carroll or a Perez at times.

    You cannot rely on it.

Sometimes you have to grit your teeth , smile , put a brave face on it , and stump up.

In summer AC Milan paid €30 million to Sevilla to activate a release clause for a 28 year old Carlos Bacca.

According to Forbes Milan are 10th richest in the world and NUFC are 18th .

We are fighting Swansea for Bas Dost’s signature , it should be a no contest in our favour.

LeBrune Marseilles owner is saying he wants €50 million for Michy Batshuayi , so what !!!

  • 23 AncientC // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:20 AM

May I defer you to Mike Ashley celebrating the last gasp winner against Tottenham, he is a real fan and legend in the making you know.

  • 24 hibbitt // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:20 AM

john we all know the type of manager that would take this job a brown nose arse licker who know it likely to be his last job in football and is happy to be a yes man…….decent managers give us a wide berth

  • 25 jazzyp // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:22 AM

Would be nice to think the likes of Willo-Gouffy-Obershoker-Marvs and the likes are shipped out to leave room for incoming. If Penfold leaves the squad as is, Then he deserves all the crap that can be thrown his way

  • 26 John Tudor // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:23 AM

  • 27 Ron Knee // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:24 AM

  • 28 John Tudor // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:25 AM

  • 29 toon22 // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:26 AM

Its a New Year so why not wish for someting silly.
Like José Mourinho till the summer(its as long as you could even wish for) with fatso selling up at the end of the season.

  • 30 WWSBRD // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:26 AM

Willo is pretty much a Wolves player at this point from what’s been put in the press but for the rest are there any real links? Can’t say I’ve seen any

Might be a case of free transfers out the door? Gouffran is the most disappointing of the bunch id say was cracking when he first arrived then Cabaye left and it just steadily dwindled to nothing still half a mill well spent overall

  • 31 firebug666 // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:27 AM

Wherever you put it, just make sure that fat man is six foot beneath it.

  • 33 John Tudor // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:28 AM

fatso will sell on relegation but not before stripping all he can from us

  • 34 hibbitt // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:30 AM

wwsbrd…………….players dont have to leave just take them out of the squad when the new players in either sell or release 5/6 players contracts end in the summer so no value if there not to be offered a new contract get rid now and free up the place other clubs work round these rules but we always use it as a crutch

  • 35 Ron Knee // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:31 AM

    How’s the head this morning?

  • 36 lesh // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:35 AM

Those players registered as squad members can be de-registered. They don’t have to be sold but obviously doing so makes sense.

However, whether our so called MD, CEO, Ashley’s gofor or whatever title he’s been given, can actually open a box let alone think outside of it!

It’s been five to six weeks since the so-called board held its squad review to identify needs to strengthen it and there’s no reason why signings shouldn’t be arriving now.

We’ve a crucial match tomorrow and it would’ve been nice to see a new face in the squad – a new face not one back from sick-parade!

Get a move on Charnley, the Club’s fate’s in his hands and you’d think that after last season’s balls up, he’d have learned.

But…. you can take a horse to water etc etc

  • 37 WWSBRD // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:35 AM

U think Ashley will be happy paying wages for players who can’t play?

  • 38 firebug666 // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:39 AM

Surprisingly not too bad mate, thanks for asking. A little shaky but that will pass.

For some reason I thought the match was today, and was trying to pull myself round for it. PMSL

Hope you had a good night too.

Like others have said we have to trim the squad to bring anyone in, Unfortunately Charnley has to find clubs for them so I doubt we will see much movement.

Like I said maybe a couple out and a couple on loan.

  • 39 Ron Knee // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:43 AM

Can’t drink like I used to (advancing years!).

We need new players starting as soon as possible, but knowing Charmless & co. …

WTF!!! Don’t know if you’re being ironic or xenophobic but could have sworn mitro was serb, wijni dutch and M’Bemba congolese and am pretty sure Eliot (Irish) Janmatt (Dutch) De Jong (Dutch,) Perez (Spanish,) etc etc are caucasean.

  • 41 lesh // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:47 AM

According to the Chron, Armstrong’s staying at Coventry and there’s an interest on somebody called Charlie Austin. Who he?

The worry is, they’re saying Austin IF the price is right!

We’re staring relegation in the face – can Charnley really believe he’s right to haggle over fees?

If we do drop, both he should he first to be booted out of SJP.

He’s as much use as a one-legged man in an arse kicking contest.

  • 42 firebug666 // Jan 1, 2016 at 10:47 AM

Anthony Taylor is the ref for tomorrows game, he was the ref when we beat Norwich earlier this season, hope he brings us some good luck tomorrow.

Hang on a minute – this New Year is just the same as the Old Year. We’ve been conned again!

    Ashley Out!

  • 52 geordie157 // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:10 AM

I’ve got a feeling we’ll not offer enough for Austin and he’ll end up going top palace! Maybe Norwich as they need a goalscorer.

We need a pacey striker, the very unlikely option is lacazette, the pricey gamble is batshuyai and the prem proven over priced option of berahino.

I think they’ve got to gamble spend big.

I’d be happy with any of those plus a couple more, ideally matip and shelvey. Makes the spine of the side stronger! Left back, willems in the summer and another winger.

  • 53 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:13 AM

Charnley will be putting his – ahem – negotiating skills 😐 against clubs who are as or more desperate than us. Given that I’m talking about Villa and Sunderland, well…..

  • 54 AncientC // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:13 AM

FDB, our choice of manager is being linked to Swansea. This would be a good time to kill two birds with one stone and bring him to Newcastle. Loic Remy on loan would also be a welcome addition.

  • 55 geordie157 // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:15 AM

With anita out, it’s a chance to move sissoko into the middle with colback, thauvin left, wijnaldum right.

But I bet he plays tiote alongside colback which sets us up to park the bus again.

Give thauvin a start, hes shown he’s capable of putting in decent crosses from the left. Mitro and perez up top or maybe start de jong up top for a bit more leadership on the pitch

  • 56 geordie157 // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:19 AM

According to sky Prince-Boateng available on a free, injury prone I’m guessing

  • 57 toon kk // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:22 AM

I can’t see MA spending too much, the teams past repairing for the premiership . I think he’ll resign to the fact we have a ready made championship side.
Sad fact we just can’t compete in the premier league. We haven’t been able to for several years tbh.

  • 58 Adywakey // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:23 AM

Happy New Year to Ed and all on the Blog!

    Less doom and gloom for the new year please Ed and fellow bloggers! We’re 3 points behind a gaggle of teams above us and the unwashed are a country mile behind. There’s been chances to win the last three games but the finishing hasn’t been as clinical as it could of been;

Villa game – Gini, Perez, Mitro all had chances to win it, only a wonder goal got them a point.

Everton game – either team could of won that in the 90 minutes of normal play – again Mitro did the impossible and missed a header from point blank and Gini was unlucky that Tim Howard somehow kept his header out of the net. Huge effort from the players though from start to finish you could see it after the game when they basically collapsed.

West Brom – Sissoko went on an amazing run and only a last gasp great tackle stopped him unleashing the beast. Mitro was rugby tackled in the box and should of had a stone cold penalty.

The point I’m making is we’re making chances if not taking them, I’d rather that (until we do start taking them) then not chance because we’re not making any!

Yes we’re in a relegation battle, yes it’ll go down to thr last couple of game if. To the last game but do I think we’ll go down? No I think it’s going to be Villa, the unwashed and Norwich, I think we’ll start doing what we need to do through Feb/March/April,

Hoe no one has a hangover!

  • 59 hibbitt // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:33 AM

toon kk seen a lot of championship football this season at boro and this team would be a nightmare in the championship and would be ill equipped for the slog of that division

  • 60 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:43 AM

Adywakey – sorry if it’s a little bit doom and gloom but isn’t it a bit worrying that we don’t seem to be able to “make our own luck” as someone said not long ago.

We definitely need a couple of offloads and a couple of incoming. The most important, if we only do one purchase, is the all-singing, all-dancing play making midfielder. That would take the pressure off everyone in the middle of the park to defend all the time.

  • 61 Jib // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:45 AM

I was a bit bemused by all the negativity on this , the start of a new year .
Then I realised that we will be getting some players in soon and the blog Victor Meldrews will be knackered for something to whinge about.

Go on girls get you whining done while you can 😀

  • 62 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:47 AM

Agree with Hibbit I actually think it would be easier to shape this side for survival than to rebuild it for the championship. If we go down, at least five players would jump ship. Then we’d have to trust Carr and Charnley to buy the necessary players to fill the gaps, and trust McLaren to use his championship experience to make us title contenders. Like he did at Derby.

  • 63 toon kk // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:51 AM

Have to agree mate, I always think we’d find the championship every bit as tough as the premier league, and would struggle in that league.
So many thought Pards was balling a quality side up with his management skills.
Tbf this season has been coming for some time, we simply lack pace, quality, creativity and cutting edge in front of goal.

  • 64 Blofal // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:53 AM

I think if possible we should bring in Loic Remy on loan and take out time finding an appropriate permanent striker.

  • 65 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2016 at 11:55 AM

    Jeff. Black. Kettle. Pot.

I thought my comment about possible midfielder purchase was constructive. It shows a glimmer of optimism in an otherwise contra-indicated environment.

You just whine about other posters, their facts, opinions, grammar, spelling, stats…. even when you are wildly and embarrassingly wrong you persist. Unlike your spiteful sniping and clawing, at least well-founded pessimism can be addressed and discussed you fatuous clanging boob.

Forget Loic Remy; he wouldn’t move back to Newcastle and, in any case Chelsea would never let him go at least till end of the season. Pardew will know this he’s just posturing as usual!

  • 72 Moonraker15 // Jan 1, 2016 at 1:55 PM

Although I know we need strengthening in DM and CB, I feel if we signed Austin we would be OK as he will get goals. However any untried striker would be a huge gamble not worth even trying.
