Report – Saivet Concerned About Newcastle’s League Position

6:07 pm, Friday, January 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 91 Comments

It’s not good to be in the relegation zone at the start of the January transfer window, and that’s why the last three games in which we have picked up only one point was not good at all – because players will not want to join a club in January who could end up in the Championship next season.

Last January QPR in particular were reported to have had great difficulty in persuading players to join them and they had 18 points after 19 games – one more than Newcastle now have – because  it looked like they were headed down in May – and of course they did get relegated.

henri Saivet

Henri Saivet – concerned about Magpies’ low league position

There is a report in the Chronicle today that Newcastle are having trouble persuading Bordeaux midfielder Henri Saivet to join the club – because he is concerned about Newcastle’s low league position.

Obviously he doesn’t want to be playing in the Championship next season – if Newcastle should get relegated – and we are currently odds-on favorites to go down.

But that also seems to be a general problem Newcastle will have in this window – and it’s unlikely to get better as January progresses.

That’s because we have to play Arsenal, Manchester United, West Ham and Watford in the league – and they are all in the top eight at the moment.

It also didn’t help that we lost eight games in a row last season and only just  avoided relegation on the last day of the season in May.

Bournemouth and Southampton are also reported to be after Saivet, so they could be better positioned to tie up the deal – especially the Saints.

Actions have consequences – and Newcastle’s very poor start to this season will not help us in January.

Comments welcome.

    YCMIU !!!

extremely injury prone, not prolific with assists or goals, would double his wages and he’s the one with cold feet!!

  • 2 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:11 PM

Best off going for Shelvey imo he’s got experience, please no more push overs from the French league we should try and get rid of the soft ones we have.

  • 3 nightfa11 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:14 PM

loan till the end of the season with a clause that if we stay deal becomes permanent..or..?..i dont know..or care much about saviet..

  • 4 toon kk // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:22 PM

In three to four seasons time we’ll be playing our football in league 1, where we might be able to compete. If we stick with our current group of flops it will take two seasons. I’ve never known such a over rated team of second rate players be so over rated by so many people.

  • 5 jazzyp // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:24 PM

If this is the sort of player that Nufc think will take us up the table, then we are well and truly F@cked.
As Tuffers quotes another “Knacker ” from the French lique.
I understand we are gonna take some selling, But jesus come on Carr sort this mess out please

  • 6 Rotonda heights // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:26 PM

still think it’s more a clueless manager who can’t get enough out of the players or find a playing identity. mbemba, perez, wijni etc are all more than useful.

  • 7 Mag52 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:26 PM

Henri’s photo says it all ” Did you say Newcastle United ?”

  • 8 Patoon // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:27 PM

Team we should start with tomorrow imo,

    Janmaat Colo Mbemba Dummett
    __Thauvin DeJong Perez_____
    ____Wijnaldum _____________

  • 9 croftus5678 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:29 PM

saivet fairly decent player strong/fast/good in air for size and has a decent pass/cross !

however his best position by far is dm which rings alarm bells imo as its all we seem to sign !

is he better than anita/colback/tiote ? imo yes a lot better and add’s another dimention as he can attack unlike those dm’s we currently have !
a bit confused as to why we go for another dm though tbh as its hardly our worst position even though he is a bargain and half at 2.5mil.

  • 10 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:29 PM

Don’t bloody want this saivet what ever his name is we need players who are ready for the fight now and are immediately gonna improve us, get Berahino, Shelvey, Townsend and a decent left back and centre half

  • 11 Rotonda heights // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:30 PM

i was referring to AP’s time here and right now anyone could tear us new one. CP have hardly scored 5 against anyone else.

  • 12 Rotonda heights // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:31 PM

    yes to all, except townsend

  • 13 jimiley // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:31 PM

Prolific at picking up injuries. He will fit in well. Consistent if nothing else Mr Carr. I demand a squad of 22 injury prone French guys at once. Sort it Mr Carr.

  • 14 OneAlanShearer // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:32 PM

Croftus- all we seem to sign? We have 4 DM’S and they are all woeful and no deep lying playmaker since cabaye. Anita, Bigi, colback and tiote are not up to it. They are average at best and we need better than we have. Shelvey AND this lad are worth a punt. Sell tiote and Bigi.

  • 15 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:35 PM

Frustrates me so much, Bournemouth aren’t exactly doing bad this season yet they’ve already got iturbe signed up.

It just doesn’t seem like charnley or Ashley are concerned despite our position.

  • 16 Rotonda heights // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:36 PM

I like that apart from I’d have have MBabu for dummet

  • 17 toon kk // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:36 PM

We have a handful of decent players, but thats not a team never mind a squad.
Look what Pards has achieved with decent players. The table doesn’t lie.

  • 18 jazzyp // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Hit the nail on the head buddy….Fairly decent !!. That isn’t gonna cut it no more, We cannot jus keep signing players that are average and expect to survive in the PL.
Lt the likes of Stoke now..Half there team would walk straight in to our first team. The players they keep signing are quality rather than chances we keep going for.
Take Wini out of the summer transfer business and was disappointing to say the least

  • 19 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Rb cover, striker, CB, rw, cm who can actually run a game are a must. About time mbabu got the nod at lb again.

  • 20 banjax // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:38 PM

Can Saivet hit the ground running in the Premier League ? No word on that. So why are we putting ourselves down because we are in relegation mode. All I can say if any player is scared of a fight then we don’t want him. My guess is there will be a few decent players who will want to play for Toon if not just for the wages !

  • 21 OneAlanShearer // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:38 PM

I’d take townsend, shelvey and berahino/austin/carroll.. We need players with skill and fight…and pace. Need a quality cb to. Plus a gk and lb.

  • 22 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:38 PM

I think the best signing we made in the summer was mbemba by a mile most consistent player we have.

  • 23 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:39 PM

Mcclaren needs to make the changes tomorrow and abandon the 442 as it isn’t working. We got outplayed by west brom ffs

  • 24 nightfa11 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:39 PM

Croftus..Id say dmc is our worst position.. Defenders started to function, But if we let opponents have 10 chances per match we will concede.. Tiote is a shadow of himself, Colback and Anita cant organize our midfield is our weakness.. We need a never give up dmc who can also organize players and make killer passes.. Young cabaye.. Saviet consider is a captain has some qualities, But I dont know how good he really is cos Ive never seen him play..hopefully good enough.. But we really need a “superstar ” in that position.. If we cover that, our ofense play will function.. We have quality players up front..

  • 25 Rotonda heights // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:41 PM

look what ranieri has done spending absolute peanuts

talk to some charlton and west ham fans re your beloved AP

  • 26 croftus5678 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:41 PM

half decent starting 11 sorted imo.

  • 27 nightfa11 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:46 PM

We dont have leaders in cm..thats our main problem.. Anita, tiote and Colback are all just little helpers to the main guy.. But we dont have one..and thats a big issue..

  • 28 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:46 PM

If we want goals from mitro we need good old fashioned wingers get half a yard and whip a ball in. We must play de Jong tomorrow we miss that link between midfield and upfront when he’s not playing and we miss his experience.

  • 29 hibbitt // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:47 PM

crofts……would be great but not going to happen mate

  • 30 nightfa11 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:50 PM

Only if shelvey can take a role of a leader..cos if he doesnt we are back to counter attack football.. Which means 5 chances per match..

  • 31 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:52 PM

Games are often won and lost depending on who wins the battles in midfield and that is where we are lacking so much, i wouldn’t even class colback/anita as ball winning midfielders, what we need is a decent pair, like we used to have with tiote and cabaye, perhaps maybe get Shelvey then Tiote can partner him? It always has to be one who is solid defensively and is physically strong, and one who can create chances from deep and have an eye for a pass.

  • 32 AncientC // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:52 PM

I am pretty sure 4-4-2 and 4-4-1-1 are the only formations that have won us games this season.

The 4-2-3-1 formation has been a disaster, we reverted back to it against Crystal Palace – enough said about that one.

McClaren has yet to try any other formations, aside from the three mentioned. 4-3-3 has got to be worth a go, maybe just not against Arsenal.

  • 33 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:53 PM

basically the midfield pair has to consist of a ball winner and a ball player

  • 34 hibbitt // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:56 PM

james that set up only works if you have a solid defence we dont

  • 35 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:56 PM

That’s exactly what we are missing. Our 2 DMs play in between the CBs the gap between them and the front line is horrendous. The game plan v Liverpool was to out run them and work harder than them, surely that should be the same against every team.

  • 36 Nufc-83 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:56 PM

I’ve been watching colback recently and getting so frustrated with him. I used to think he was really good and such a hard worker he would be the dm in the team nailed on. He never takes the ball down even when under no pressure and just heads it aimlessly up field in which the opposition take back possession. He has been doing this so much I was screaming at the telly against west brom after about the 5th time. When Tiote came on he kept chesting the ball down when under no pressure and passing it off and he totally embarrassed colback IMO. Tiote needs to be the DM in the team going forward and try and get someone creative alongside him so he can get back to his old self like when cabaye was here.

  • 37 croftus5678 // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:57 PM

    @29 hibbitt

    @31 james

tbh i believe we have that acm who’s better than cabaye and thats wijnaldum but again its another player who’s played out of position.

tiote with wijnaldum i think would make a great cm pairing but he does like his 2 dm’s doesnt he >.<

  • 38 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:57 PM

    Ancient C

we tried 433/4141 against watford and their two strikers just completely dominated the DM colback and mbemba and colo. Main reason being the closing down was terrible from us.

Formations imo are just on paper, i honestly don’t think it has much of an effect on how we play, unless it is a change to a 3 at the back or something, like there isn’t really any difference in playing a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-1-1.

For me its all about the coaching, mcclaren and cathro need to be working on the players tactical awareness, how they can exploit gaps, how they can play out of certain situations, how they can create a chance, simple things like, getting a winger to come short to receive a pass, but then if he’s being marked then getting the striker to make a run in behind the defence if we have to go long, there isn’t enough intelligence to create situations like this,. we look so clueless sometimes, and i think this is more down to the coaching. How we sat off west brom was embarrassing, making them look like barcelona, we are so bad at hunting in packs, closing down and limiting the options, thats if we actually intend to.

  • 39 lesh // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:58 PM

Actions do have consequences as does copping – Mr Charnley, take note!

He, together with Carr are responsible for today’s debacle and Ashley for his strategy before that.

It could have been avoided had Charnley and Ashley had gone for a then available top coach this time last year. De Boer, Klopp et al were available but oh no, Charnley would choose to put his head in the sand and hope that Carver’d save him a lot of effort this season.

He deserves to be shown the door at the end of the season, whether we stay up or not.

  • 40 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:59 PM

exactly mate, is mcclaren completely changing the game plan though not to outrun teams? or is it the players that can’t be bothered to do it every game?

  • 41 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 6:59 PM

Dude don’t come then. We need players who are so blatantly confident they know that because They join the team it will thrive by definition. I miss the swagger of a Ginola, a Shearer, a Robert, a Bellamy, you get it..

  • 42 lesh // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:00 PM

To get players in, Charnley needs to sell a vision.

Ah, but there lies a problem!

  • 43 croftus5678 // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:02 PM

    @36 nufc

i’m the same however he’s another one who’s growing annoyed at being played as a dm imo !

he looked happier on the one occasion he went forward in the last game and thinking back to his sunderland days he was always a box to box cm.

  • 44 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:03 PM

Man you been watching Colback and you concluded he’s crap eh. Well done. Now put every one of them under your microscope and point me to one who hasn’t been.

  • 45 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:05 PM

Lesh the vision these days is a big dollar sign. If it’s bigger than the competition it can work 9 out of 10

  • 46 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:05 PM

Sissoko is a prime example of that, he’s terrible when he’s 1 v 1 at a standing start only good when he’s already on the run.

  • 47 Munster Mag // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:06 PM

To be fair, I dont think the main issue with NUFC is Charnley. In fact I think he is ok at getting deals done – last summer cannot have been a stroll in the park for him. The problem is that Carr is choosing the players based both on his vision of the game, and based on sell on value via Ashleys model, rather than team suitability. I reckon they are in a real pickle now, because they know they need to spend, but we are going to get gus like Gouffy, rather than Wini, as its a bad time to buy and sell.

  • 48 Nufc-83 // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:07 PM

Cyprus I would say Mbemba and Elliot have played relatively well with colo being hot and cold. Gini has given a good return considering he is out of position with jaanmat and sissokho being relatively effective on the right. Perez has again showed bags of talent for a young player and mitro has shown good signs. It’s not as bad as you think with every player being labelled crap. Get a lb who can carry the ball forward. A deep lying playmaker such as shelvey. A direct pacey winger and an experienced goal scorer we will be ok.

  • 49 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:09 PM

I will stand with Waddle’s assessment maybe he knows a thing or two about this sport. He says Sissoko has ‘something about him’.

  • 50 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:11 PM

For those who are interested in tactics kind of stuff, here’s a little read about something called “juego de posicion” something that is utilised and implemented in training and coaching methods by Pep Guardiola, Louis Van Gaal and Eddie Howe. Includes simple stuff like creating triangles in order to keep possession etc. But its something that maybe mcclaren could do with reading as well as we seem so inept at trying to dominate a game sometimes.

  • 51 Munster Mag // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:11 PM

Rotunda, is that the same pardew as the one in sixth or somewhere in the league who tore us a new one a few weeks ago? Hmm, am still trying to explain to people I meet that he is as useless as people say. Thing is they all just think I am another delusional Newcastle fan. Thing is , for some stupid reason I trust Charnley to get 2-3 players in the window. My problem is that SMC has shown himself to be no better than the King (:) ) and who told them to get SMC? Carr of course. Given his lukewarm signings and his love of flimsy frenchmen, you can see why i have been giving out yards about him for two years.

  • 52 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:11 PM

NUFC, agreed they’re not crap players. They have been crap though on many an occasion.

  • 53 stevie101182 // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:13 PM

Why do people keep saying we need cbs as a priority we could have the 2 best cb in the world and still ship goals in the problem we have is down the wings and cm colback and Anita are not a good pairing there is no productivity between them gini isn’t a winger and comes inside too much so its 2 on 1 most of the time. As a priority we need a creative cm lm and lb before we get anything else mbemba and col will see us safe if we can sort out the midfield and winger issue

  • 54 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:15 PM

Gini has been a wow revelation then hugely disappointing and so on. Much like NUFC historically. Hard to accept the out of position line. Though get it.

  • 55 AncientC // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:18 PM

JamesToon – The set up was quite poor against West Brom, I think that is down to McClaren wanting to sit deeper in away games.
The amount of (or lack of) pressing in the early stages of the game was criminal. The emphasis was handed to West Brom from the off.

  • 56 cyprus // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:20 PM

Although I’m definitely NOT an obertan fan that first goal of the season with gini was, I thought, the shape of things to come. Fast deadly counters, high pressure, confidence on the ball. Maybe it will come back.

  • 57 JamesToon // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:25 PM

first game of the season against saints, i was very pleased with what i saw, didn’t anyone else find it a real breathe of fresh air when were playing out from the back, no williamson hoofing it to perez, creating triangles and 3 v 2 or 2 v 1 situations, i thought we were very exciting to watch in periods of that game. And despite drawing against them and conceding 2 very poor goals, i felt very confident for the season ahead, i thought we played some decent football away at man united, and even when we lost 2-0 to west ham, despite a pretty poor performance, we could all see the foundations there to play a possession, attacking game, there was just a few aspects of the tactics that had to be worked on, e.g. creating more chances in the final third, and pressing high up the pitch, want us to go back to that philosophy, because i did enjoy watching us a lot, it just took a bit of tweaking to improve us defensively and attacking.

  • 58 Jib // Jan 1, 2016 at 7:55 PM

  • 59 toon kk // Jan 1, 2016 at 8:00 PM

Why all the hate for Pardew? Of course we could have had a better manager, what did people actually expect from our squad? As soon as we started to get something going MA cashed our best players in. We need proper investment on the correct players or we’ll always struggle who ever is our coach.

    James toon @50

This has been done in training for years I take it ur just a young boy who no,s little u mention 3 high profile managers who do it yet most managers and coaches try it in training ,doing it in the game is so much harder ,if you watch the tops teams in matches they will always play that way always have options for a pass in the triangle shape n will always close down in that way ,Dalglish use to get slated for his training sessions ,it was always 5aside 1touch pass n go yet the top teams do it all the time now ,so there is nothing new there

Has everyone forgot that thauvin had his chance on the left and that’s when we went on our first slump he use to do everything right except when it came to the final ball he did give us another dimension though

  • 68 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2016 at 8:28 PM

With several key players underperforming and played out of position I have to think it’s at least partly due to McLaren. He looks lost to me. Using Wij on the left wing just doesn’t work at all. And we’re not getting nearly enough out of him most of the time. Sissoko goes on those lung busting runs but either outpaces the forwards (mainly Mitrovic who is quite slow) or peters out at the end when surrounded by defenders. This is not working McLaren.

  • 69 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2016 at 8:30 PM

Reassure them in what way James RS? Tell them we’re a crap club run by a crap owner with crap management? Take a look at the standings mate, that’s what our targets are probably doing.

Breaking news from your Senior Official Club Journo! The latest interview with Steve McLaren:
G2: Steve it’s a new year with 19 games remaining in the season. What are you going to do differently that will make us a better club?
Steve: Happy New Year G2. Well, errm, actually I wasn’t planning on doing anything differently. We’re just rounding into form now I believe. We’re playing well in patches. We look very powerful and compact. We’re frightening defenses everywhere we go.
G2: Ahhh, I see Steve. Hmmmm. You do realize you’re not at Derby County anymore don’t you Steve?
Steve: Now look G2 if you’re going to have a go, this interview is at an end. I’ll let our results do the talking for me….
G2: Well good luck with that Steve. 😯

Can someone tell me what is toon brother and blackley problem with Colo. What is the problem with him. Why don’t people get on mbemba back as he has played with Colo pretty much most of the season. I have seen a few positional issues from mbemba also janmaat it’s the whole bloody back 4 not one person but as I said if the midfield carnt keep the ball they are going to get caught out of position caught flat footed. Colo isn’t as quick as he used to be and I ain’t saying he fantastic but I can tell you know there are much worse defenders in the premier league than him

Janmaat has statically made the most errors which have led to goals but gets a free pass. Mbemba I’ve been impressed with, Colo does need replacing and dummett….well the less said about him the better

My point exactly janmaat has had an absolutely shocking first half but I think a lot of that has something to do with sissoko playing in front of him. But as I said not one person has got on his back just Colo. By the way I do agree he needs replacing but I think the summer will be the best time to do that. I think Jan should be a left back to move dummett into cb and left midfield to move gini into centre mid and a creative mid

My worry tomorrow is our midfield will get overrun/bypassed.
    Might try something daft
Put Colback to full back, bring Mbabu as other full back.
Move Dummet to centre half alongside Mbemba move Janmaat and Colocinni to midfield
    Elliott or Darlow
    Mbabu, Mbemba, Dummett, Colback
    Sissoko, Colocinni, Wijnaldum, Janmaat
    De Jong

Interesting line up mate, my concern with Colo as a DM is he’ll get run ragged by Arsenal especially the movement. Alot of ground to cover in that role and he’s old.

I do agree though that we need to try something daft / new. I’d go for Mbabu or Colback to follow ozil and try to stop him. Man mark him out of the game. Only Southampton have done that this season and they were successful

To all you so called fans who want smc out look at pardew now and you said it was his fault back then, is it any wonder they think we’re all deluded. Some things have changed one thing has been constant and that’s why we are crap and this blog is full of depressed fans watching the worst and luckiest team in the prem (for now). Be intresting to see where the FCB will turn now the French bargain basement helmets don’t want to know!!!!

    Pad the mag

He’s doing exactly what he did with us in his first full season, and with West Ham. It’s what happens after his full season which leads to problems!! Look at his history it’ll tell you all you need to know

    Our Toon
My reasoning is Janmaat and Colocinni go on walkabout
So putting them in midfield they would have the freedom to go forward and hopefully flood the midfield but would have cover for fullbacks Colback and Mbabu
