Newcastle Unlikely To Progress In The FA Cup

11:36 pm, Monday, January 4th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 42 Comments

One of the things Alan Pardew did not do well at Newcastle were in  the cup compositions – the FA Cup and the League Cup – and then there were the Newcastle – Sunderland derbies which he also did not excel at.

But Steve McClaren has said that Newcastle will be going all out to win the FA Cup despite a major fight we have on our hands to avoid relegation.

We’ll see how we do at Watford in the 3rd round on Saturday, but we’d be very surprised if we can reach the 4th round this year.

Steve McClaren – confident we can have a go at FA Cup

If we do lose in the 3rd round it will not be anything unusual since we’ve gone out at the first stage the last three years.

All that presumably changed at the beginning of the season and last May when owner Mike Ashley said he wanted to win something at Newcastle.

Lee Charnley – who is running the club for Mike Ashley – then issued a statement in early June saying that cup competitions were now a priority.

Presumably that meant they were not a priority before and in the same statement it also said our goal this season was a top eight finish in the Premier League.

What’s happened is that we’ve been struggling with relegation all season and currently we are 3 points from safety in 3rd bottom place with 17 points from 20 games and that’s the worst we have ever done in the Premier League at this stage of the season.

This is what Steve McClaren said:

“I’m absolutely confident we can have a go at the FA Cup.” “We’ll play a strong team and every game is important.”

“The FA Cup is as important as any other game. It’s another game we want to win.”

We thought we’d get hammered at Arsenal on Saturday and we were wrong on that and we think we will lose to Watford on Saturday.

But maybe not – and certainly a win would give the lads confidence to go in and beat Manchester United at home next Tuesday night.

Maybe I’m just suffering from defeat fatigue – with 11 defeats in our first 20 league games?

But we really need to pick up points in the league very soon and that next league game at home next week is so very important against a beatable Red Devils side.

We cannot lose again for the 4th time in a row and have then taken one point from the last 15 points played for – and then have Steve tell us we are playing extremely well.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    The Chronic is quoting:

When asked if he still believed Newcastle could have a tilt at an FA Cup run this year, McClaren responded firmly: “Yeah, yep. I’m absolutely confident we can have a go at that.

“We’ll play a strong team and every game is important. The FA Cup is as important as any other game. It’s another game we want to win.”

It my not be that important but I wonder whenSchtevie actually said those words, this week or when we were drawn Watford before xmas?

Anyone know if the Remy loan deal involves a loan fee or just his wages?

Because QPR we had to pay 2mil loan fee & his wages as well. He was on 80k/week then. What is he on now?

  • 5 Lindisfarne // Jan 4, 2016 at 11:49 PM

Schtevie has more or less used the same 11 players in the first team with an additional 3or5, which really sets the bar. Because if he changes the team drastically he will then have to justify why and at the moment every match is important, we need a win to give us some confidence and a kick start.

This window will show everyone what Ashleys final intentions are for NUFC. Including the players. If they don’t buy 4 to 6 key players I think they may as well advertise they have zero progressive intentions. Stake in the ground.. step over it Ashley or sit on your butt and watch what happens. Your PR last summer gave you one last chance…It starts or ends here.

I would like to see an Andy Carroll loan deal till season ends for £2mil.. and also put it in the clause .. if he scored more than 9 goals.. (9 goals in 18 league matches @ 1 goal / 2 matches) .. the loan will be made permanent at an additional £10mil…

@jib – the jaguars increase in value isn’t due to khan and anything hes done, its due to the fact that they are top of the list to relocate to St Louis where theyre fan base will more than triple.
The international london games they play have raised their income but they are no way an NFL power. Theyve only made the playoffs twice in about 15 years…

Team selected for the cup v team selected to keep in the PL – which team is going to take precedence.
I think we should all know the answer to that.

Has Charlies removal van been spotted in the Toon yet.

Actually think mcClaren would be mad to risk elliott, mbemba, gini and sissoko. Those 4 are far too important considering our league position to risk.
Regarding transfers, knowing Carr well get what we don’t need!
Im guessing a keeper, a right back and a lightweight french #10…

  • 12 OneAlanShearer // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:40 AM

    It will likely be:

    Janmaat lascelles colo mbabu

    Anita colback

    Sissoko De jong thauvin

  • 13 Tsunki // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:42 AM

Ah but jeff does at least keep trying. One day he’ll actually pull off the knows what he’s talking about thing, mark my words.

  • 14 jayphoto // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:43 AM

Colo hasnt played an FA cup game for years hasnt he? Pretty sure hes missed the last 3-4…

  • 15 Tsunki // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:45 AM

Any idea what Blackley was trying to make a point of? You can tell he’s been up all night formulating it but I’m damned if I can fathom what he’s poking at. Anyone?

  • 16 Magpie Season // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:45 AM

Watford will field a weak/reserve team. If we play our first 11 & still get beat the player’s confidence & morale levels would be even lower than what they are now.

  • 17 Tsunki // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:46 AM

Ed, isn’t that pose of McLaren pulling his pockets inside out not supposed to be posted until the end of the transfer window?

  • 18 Tsunki // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:48 AM

Jayphoto- almost as many as derbies 😐

  • 19 Magpie Season // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:54 AM

    Sterry Lascelles Satka Mbabu

    Gouffran Barlaser

    Marveaux Ferguson

    De Jong(c)

  • 20 Blofal // Jan 5, 2016 at 12:59 AM

I expect Lacselles, Thauvin, De Jong and Mbabu to all start.

All have a point to prove and all can play 90 minutes without the risk of the result effecting our league position.

People will cry out we are fielding a weakened team but seriously, we need those 4 players to have a full 90 minutes against premier league opposition without the consequences if it fails. Worst case we are out of the FA cup. Best case they perform and suddenly we have more to players to consider when facing Man U.

I will put money on Thauvin and De Jong performing well. Get Riviere in there if he is fit too. Maintaining our premier league status is the most important factor given we are in the relegation zone.

    Mbabu – Lacselles – Coloccini – Dummett
Sissoko – De Jong —- Perez ——Thauvin

Subs: Elliot, Wijnaldum, Toney, Janmaat, Mbemba, Tiote, Riviere

Were you the one talking about relationships with agents yesterday?

You know if we have any good relationships with agents of foreign managers? Probably why we didn’t get Biesla, De Boer, Garde, Viera, etc…?

…mitro needs to find a bit luck in front of goal so keep playing him, thauvin to start aarons later on for a little game time..same with SDJ and toney

  • 24 davis_toons // Jan 5, 2016 at 2:07 AM

Yoan Gouffran is a French footballer who currently plays for Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Gouffran plays as a striker or a winger and is renowned for his pace and ability to finish with either foot.

has goofy ever actually had a run of games as striker?….cant say i can??

  • 26 SPRINGY // Jan 5, 2016 at 3:39 AM

    cant say i ever have#

  • 27 Blofal // Jan 5, 2016 at 4:17 AM

Magpie I don’t think Marveaux has a future at our club. He would have at least been on the bench by now if he did. Wouldn’t be surprised if he is sold in the next couple of weeks.

  • 28 Blofal // Jan 5, 2016 at 4:17 AM

Is Aarons back in training yet?

  • 29 nut meg // Jan 5, 2016 at 4:52 AM

Aarons was supposed to be playing in the under 21s team against Everton but it’s been postponed due to waterlogged pitch. So he must be fit but I would imagine he’ll need game time to get match fitness.

    The mind boggles

  • 32 Ron Knee // Jan 5, 2016 at 5:45 AM

    Morning jesper

Interesting article in The Mag. They point out that if Charmless dithers about as usual there will only be 13 PL matches remaining after the transfer window closes.

  • 33 Jail for Ashley // Jan 5, 2016 at 5:45 AM

I wasn’t wired up to any sophisticated machinery like a heart rate monitor, brain sensor etc, but I tried a simple experiment on the Mrs. I said to her “this year we’re going to try and win a cup” a couple of minutes later I said to her ” the league is always priority and it’s dangerous to try and win a cup”. I didn’t notice any difference in energy expended.

  • 34 lesh // Jan 5, 2016 at 6:03 AM

    Well well

According to the Torygraph, you know who’s interested in taking Shelvey to Selhurst Park.

    Oh what fun….

  • 35 davis_toons // Jan 5, 2016 at 6:30 AM

Carr should have sign Andreas Weimann. Is cheap and with sell-on value at 24.

    Our transfer system really sucks.

  • 36 expatmag // Jan 5, 2016 at 6:31 AM

And it is beyond belief if the papers are to be believed

…..the twat at the Palace is only chasing players we have been linked with long term like Austin and Shelvey.

…..while we are apparently keen to take on one of his rejects in Dwight Gayle

……whilst we are allegedly trying to sign a former England international defender….Michael Dawson

At least we dont appear to be stupid enough to pay circa 18 million quid for over rated shyte like Carroll and Townsend……..I hope

  • 37 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 5, 2016 at 6:43 AM

I seem to remember it as being Pardew who was really keen on Austin and Shelvey whilst the club (and many fans) weren’t. Could add Tomkins to that list as well.

Still, if he does go for Remy, and there was any truth in him wanting to sign Santon, Colo and Krul (all newspaper rumours) in the summer whilst going for Remy now, then it makes a bit of a mockery of him complaining about having players forced upon him.

Morning Ron…that’s very much in tune with what I have been saying mate!…sadly 🙁

I don’t have much faith in Charnley either. To those who says he doesn’t have much say anyway and it’s all Ashley. Well the money is there whether it’s now or in the summer, so with survival being the priority it should really be a no brainer.

  • 39 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 5, 2016 at 7:08 AM

Gnabry recalled by Arsenal from his loan at West Brom. A player we have been linked with a few times, and has done okay on the few occasions I’ve seen him. Quick, can cross, winger… Granted he couldn’t get into the West Brom side, but given their style of play, then he was never a natural fit for them.

Not convinced he is the ideal fit for us at this moment in time, but cheap and available now on loan or to sign. May well suit the club given their reticence to spend in Jan.

  • 40 sparky55 // Jan 5, 2016 at 7:12 AM

It really is game over for the toon if we go down this year because no-one will stay apart from Dummet and Elliot and some of our fringe players.

The only issue here is does the fat slug understand and realise that is the case?

    …We’ll soon find out.

Note to Ashley. The sums are easy…if you spend another 50 million in the next three weeks on experienced premiership players and we therefore stay up, you will receive circa £420 million over the next five years and your global advertising vehicle remains intact.

Do nothing and you’ll have diddly squat advertising wise and maybe 150 million if you’re lucky over the next five years.

    Do the Math…it’s not difficult

  • 41 sparky55 // Jan 5, 2016 at 7:17 AM

No doubt most of the players we get in the next three weeks will be on loan which means they’ll be fringe players from other clubs which pretty much means they wont be much better than what we have.

Ashley wont buy more than a couple of players because he knows he’ll take a hit when they’re sold when we go down in May.

    It’s looking well dodgy mate

  • 42 catchy in norway // Jan 5, 2016 at 7:27 AM

I do think players will come , and to be honest I don’t think it matters to much where they come from as long as they get played in the right position and have an established winning mentality from the club they come from, the must be playing regular football too,

If we do go for the likes of Remy or Austin j think we are buying problems for the future as they are not the most reliable players , the only thing we have in our favour right now is the EC in France and players want to be there for it, but one that is over Remy for sure will only play half a season at best.

I don’t care about what people say about young Armstrong and that he should stay away for the rest of the season, I’d have him back right now and made our no1 striker, he is on fire and some of the goals he is scoring are out of this world and the big thing for me is he prefers his left foot, most of our chances come from the right which favours a left footer.
