This Person As Culpable As Any For Newcastle’s Decline

4:46 pm, Tuesday, January 5th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 22 Comments

At one point Newcastle Chief Scout was hailed as a hero at Newcastle after bringing some excellent players to Newcastle who became very good players – but then we sold them for often a massive profit.

Those included players such as Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba and Mathieu Debuchy – so in that sense Graham earned his wages.

Graham Carr – Newcastle Chief Scout

But recently some of his acquisitions have not been so good and some have failed quickly like Remy Cabella and Manu Riviere to name but two that were brough in eighteen months ago..

Graham joined Newcastle from Spurs in February of 2010 and shortly after that we were promoted back to the Premier League and one of Graham’s first signing was Cheick Tiote for £3.5M from FC Twente.

Cheick has been good at Newcastle and he was our Man of the Match at Arsenal last Saturday.

Here’s a quick rundown of some of the signings Graham has made – the good – the bad and the maybe.

The good

Cheick Tiote

Yohan Cabaye

Demba Ba

Mathieu Debuchy

Ayoze Perez

Georginio Wijnaldum

Chancel Mbemba

The bad

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Sylvain Marveaux

Yoan Gouffran

Romain Amalfitano

Gabby Obertan

Remy Cabella

Manu Riviere

Gael Bigirimana

Curtis Good

And the maybe

Aleksandar Mitrovic

Florian Thauvin

Jamaal Lascelles

Karl Darlow

The problem Newcastle have is because we sign lots of our players from the continent we know it always takes time for them to settle in and some of them just don’t make it.

But that’s Mike Ashley’s policy rather than Graham’s, but still we haven’t signed too many good players over the last three years.

It’s a key transfer window this month for Newcastle – there’s no doubt about that – and whether we get good players in will probably decide if we are relegated or not.

Let’s hope Graham comes through for the club this month – big time.

Comments welcome.

according to stats on shots per goals its cisse then perez then mitro the austin last !!!!

qpr even though relegated must have created a lot more for austin than we created for our strikers 🙁

Yes, Mr Carr”s years of recruitment knowldge was quickly exhausted. The list was short.

Munster has been after this article for months 🙂

Carr is past it, he’s had a good run time for someone with more worldwide knowledge and fresh ideas. Also time for Mash to see past his potential sell on with profit regime, before its to late.

Remember there used to be a little “in Carr we trust” shrine on the homepage.

    Where did it go ?

I think it’s harsh putting Yoan Gouffran on the ‘bad’ list – the first 2 seasons he was a regular and chipped in with some goals too. He was flogged to death by Pardew covering left back and now he doesn’t have the legs anymore.

not so long ago many said “in Carr we trust” even made shirt with his picture, how things easily change in this football club. I still remember what the fans did to SBR at the end of his career, it’s sad.

Bit unfair on Carr. He only identified targets within the set budget. The person setting the budget so low us the guilty party for me.

  • 14 John Tudor // Jan 5, 2016 at 5:04 PM

ashley bought all the carr shirts

Anyone thinking MA has taken a back seat will be mistaking I reckon, he’ll still have the final say of who comes or go’s. Trouble is he has a clown for his left hand man, Charnless shouldn’t be any where near a football club.

Pep Guardiola has called an extraordinary presser in Germany to announce it has always been his ambition to manage in England and that it why he is not renewing his contract with Bayern Munich.

Guardiola was Sir Bobby Robson’s favourite captain ( he wanted to bring him to the toon) and SBR was Pep Guardiola’s favourite coach.

Dreams are part of what makes footy so enjoyable.

    What a p*ss awful day all-round…

CARR – “You Can Call Me Al” ( adapted form Paul Simon )

    Ashley walks down the street
He says why am I soft in the middle now
Why am I soft in the middle
The rest of my life is so hard
    I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Don’t want to end up a Carr Toon
    In a Carr Toon graveyard
    Bonedigger Bonedigger
Dogs in the moonlight ( that was Halls era )
    Far away my well-lit door
Mr. Beerbelly Beerbelly ( Ashley )
Get these mutts away from me
You know I don’t find this stuff amusing anymore

    If you’ll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you (David) Batty
And Batty when you call me
You can call me Al an ( Shearer )

Bigo was not scouted by Care. Didn’t he rocked up at the training ground, was given a trial and signed

  • 19 magicmac // Jan 5, 2016 at 5:29 PM

Ashley is the problem with everything that happens at Newcastle, no self respecting football manager or player would work under Ashley the way he runs our great club, his only ambition is to keep Newcastle in the premier league, and suck us dry like and everyone in the so called board are all yes men, yes Mr Ashley, no Mr Ashley, they are all snakes in the grass, no one of them have any backbone or any decency, our great club is simply rotten to the core, the only thing that is decent and honest about our great club is the fantastic and loyal fans, they are the best fans in the united kingdom, from Eamon in Northern Ireland. Newcastle United for ever.

Jib @16 – while I admire your optimism I’ve got more chance of being the next NUFC manager than Guardiola 🙂

i would love to see players from Japan, Korea, Asia but Carr got non.

The scouting network is too narrow.
