There were various reports out yesterday about Newcastle’s attempts to get Alexandre Lacazette to Newcastle in January, but it was always going to be difficult to attract a player who has said many times in the past that if he leaves Lyon he wants to move to a Champions League club.
With Newcastle 3rd bottom of the Premier League we have slipped alarmingly in the last year and have been fighting for our Premier League lives, as other smaller clubs like Leicester City, Watford, West Ham and Crystal Palace – to name just four – have flourished.
Alexandre Lacazette – not coming to Newcastle
The initial report was that a £25M bid had been made by Newcastle to Lyon for the 24 year-old striker bit then various reports following the news in L’Equipe disputed that.
Here are the various follow-up reports that came out yesterday – some of which we are sure were just made up:
- No bid was made and Newcastle were puzzled about the L’Equipe report – although the club remains interested in the player
- Newcastle did make the bid and it was accepted by Lyon but Alexandre turned us down
- Lyon and Newcastle couldn’t agree on the fee for the striker
There are some big clubs interested in Lacazette should he become available – and we don’t think Newcastle now have much chance of signing this player.
We missed our chance a couple of years ago before we started to go south and Lacazette started to improve.
With our terrible record over the last year it will be very difficult to get good players in this January.
But that’s exactly what we have to do if we are survive in the Premier League this season and then really build for the future this summer.
