Newcastle May Rest Players With Injury Niggles At Watford

2:33 pm, Friday, January 8th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 75 Comments

Steve McClaren has given his press conference today for the FA Cup 3rd round tie at Watford tomorrow and Steve says he will play his strongest team – but may need to rest some players who have a few injury niggles.

Newcastle have a home game against Manchester United on Tuesday night and that’s presumably why the head coach will need to rest some players tomorrow to ensure they are fit for Tuesday.

Anyway – that’s the party line today.

Steve McClaren Press Conference Newcastle United

Steve McClaren – gave his press conference today

This is some of that Steve McClaren has said in his press conference today:

We are coming up against a Watford team in very good form, so it won’t be easy to win the game. But we will go there to win it.

We’ve got one or two players who have got niggles and it’s a big risk, so we need to decide if we play them.

Tomorrow will be the strongest team we can put out without taking a risk on anyone.

With the position we are in, it doesn’t matter if it’s cup or league. It’s an important game and one we want to go and win.

We need a win. We need to gather momentum and tomorrow is an opportunity to do that. Arsenal is the standard and the level.

It would be nice to get a win at Watford tomorrow since we have so few of those over the last 12 months – never mind just this season.

Two in three fans think we will lose this game.

Macca getting his excuses in early for leaving out the big names then?

  • 2 jazzyp // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:39 PM

Asked about Alexandre Lacazette that #NUFC have reportedly bid £19m for, McClaren: “I haven’t got a clue.”

Are you honestly trying to tell the fans you have no clue of transfer dealings stevie boy…..And I thought you said that you wanted an honest and open dialogue with the fans when you took the job….HHmmm

  • 3 manxpie // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:40 PM

Aye rotunda I’m not usually a grammar police kind but that one annoys me about the same as when people said afra instead of arfa
townsend would be good on loan he’ll be itching to impress plus when he was playing for spurs wasn’t saldado the main man upfront that’s got to have fusked up his assists chart

  • 4 toon kk // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:42 PM

We haven’t got a strong team to put out.

  • 5 Belfast // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:46 PM

I think you’ll see a lot of changes from both sides especially with the upcoming midweek fixtures.

  • 6 toon kk // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:48 PM

The club’s run on secrecy and lies.

  • 7 croftus5678 // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:49 PM

he needs to play rola and 1 dm not 2 !

    i’ll see that as progress.

i still say our best formation is 5-3-2 when hairdryer is back with wij/siss and tiote in cm.

  • 8 jimmysmith // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:53 PM

I remember Kennedy and Nattrass well. Supermac at the other end banging them in and Tommy Craig pulling the strings in midfield, but really we weren’t very good, and Kennedy only really blossomed later on at Liverpool where he went on to have an excellent career, despite winning surprisingly few caps, although many, many trophies..

  • 9 beermonkey // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:55 PM

I dont think we will see any first team players coming in

  • 10 toon kk // Jan 8, 2016 at 2:55 PM

Macca just on ssn saying, they’ve going about their business very quietly and saying nothing so fans won’t be too disappointed if nothing happens.

In other words don’t expect anyone through the door, it may not happen.

  • 11 jazzyp // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:01 PM

Happy new year mate. How’s it going down there on the south coast. Coming down your way in July for our hols.

On 1st team players coming in I think there will or should I say hope there will be players coming in. Whether it be loan or permanent is another matter

  • 12 nut meg // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:04 PM

Didn’t Charnley say he always looked at transfer windows mid to long term, maybe somebody should have a word with him that he needs to deliver this window….the next one could be too late!

  • 13 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:05 PM

i would like to see 5-3-2/3-5-2 for a few games to see if it could work…as i believe like u the players we have would maybe that system better….can only try it… but theres not much chance it will happen with the situation where in coz that would take almighty balls to do, coz if it did’nt work the gaffer would get any amount of stick…only a brave man would try something that bold in relegation battle…..but maybe we need a bit of boldness?

  • 14 bettyswallocks // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:07 PM

I don’t think we can realistically expect McC to discuss transfer targets and deals for obvious reasons.
The worry is can we get our targets to sign, with Charnley trying to sell the club and convince them.

  • 15 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:11 PM

its blatently obvious we need some fresh faces through the door

  • 16 toonluvva // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:12 PM

I don’t mind us keeping quiet on the deals we are trying to tie up.

Sadly I am not sure whether we a being cute and keeping stumm, or just not even interested in bringing in more players.

We know how much we stand to lose in TV rights, but someone told me that there will be no more parachute payments anymore. Does anyknow know if this true or not.

    happy new year to
the south coast is lovely thank its so warm I have only had to put the heating on 3 times this winter
are u coming back down to brighton again

we have been here before there doesn’t seem to be any urgency or even admitting there is a problem
and the murmurings were getting don’t fill me with confidence I think they have there transfer plans and no matter what wont change the plan

  • 18 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:16 PM

i think its convincing players to come is the hold up……hardly an exciting proposition being in the relegation places ,constantly struggling and the club/fans turmoil in the headlines or mentioned on sky everytime we have a live match cant be doing us favours….unfortunately thats the way things are and players will need persuaded which will take time if possible

  • 19 davetoon // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:17 PM

    maybe Steve could rest himself…

  • 20 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:21 PM

in hopeful world we will put the strongest team we have out against watford and then sign 2 top signings before man utd on tuesday to get the atmosphere up and that might help get a good result against them….like i said…hopeful world!lol

  • 21 Our Toon // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:22 PM

I couldn’t care less about the FA Cup, if we go out we go out! Priority is staying in prem

  • 22 Mag52 // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:23 PM

O.K. guys. The team we should put out v Watford is as follows :
    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Mbabu
    Thauvin Sissoko Winji Aarons
    De Jong
That gives Thauvin and Aarons and Mbabu a chance to start a game. It saves Tiote for Man.U. while Perez can replace De Jong later in the game if nec.
Sooner or later we’ve got to see what Thauvin is all about, and with him and Janmaat raiding up one flank, and Mbabu and Aarons up the other, there should be enough chances made for Mitro and Winji coming in late.

  • 23 davetoon // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:24 PM

@bettyswallocks agree that Charnley couldnt attract any player to the club. They should have Shearer calling the prospective players and Charnley should just be handing him the blank cheques

  • 24 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:38 PM

i think lascelles thauvin and goofy will start aarons off the bench he’s been out so long cant see him starting,so maybe…
second team more likely from macca tbh

  • 25 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:41 PM

apparently colback is injured so with him and anita out pretty sure goofy will start somewhere

We in Snowdonia at moment trecking through mountains around Dolgellau.
I would like to think we could at least bring in a couple of loan signings as in Remy. Personally think it will be a disaster if we don’t do any sort of business

  • 31 croftus5678 // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:54 PM

<3 the mbabu option as think he's earnt a cup game imo with his chelsea app.

i also think thauvin has earnt a game also with his displays on the right and ye if rolando and river are available i'd give them a chance in place of rested players to see what they can do seeing as they have been motivated through one way or another.

wiji/siem/perez to come on as subs if needed.

  • 32 davetoon // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:55 PM

@springy had to look it up. He didn’t play colo when we lost to Wednesday in the league cup

Lascelles and Williamson started in the middle

  • 33 jimiley // Jan 8, 2016 at 3:56 PM

Does getting relegated count as trophy? Like 4th place does??????? I fear our owner may be with us forever. If we wait for a trophy before he departs. An eternal owner much loved by all. It cannot get any better. Harrumph.

  • 34 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:02 PM

i was reading an article on aarons on wed i think and he said he was gutted that a couple of the under 21 games had been cancelled(monday/wednesday) due to the rain as he was looking to build his fitness, so with that being said im not sure he’ll start,he might like but makes me doubt it….sure mbabu will start….rest is up for debate tbh

  • 35 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:03 PM

i thought he’d missed a cup game so if we have lascelles fit he may well rest colo again and save him for tuesday

  • 36 Tsunki // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:05 PM

” We’ve got one or two players who have got niggles and it’s a big risk, so we need to decide if we play them.”

” Tomorrow will be the strongest strongest team we can put out without taking a risk on anyone.”

Best we can expect is an entertaining effort from the bench boys.

  • 37 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:08 PM

sounds defeated already….hardly inspiring is it!lol

  • 38 geordie157 // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:14 PM

Will Marveaux somehow make the side?

It’s a game where Mbabu and Thauvin should start.

    442 possibly

    Janmaat, Mbemba, Lascelles/Dummett, Mbabu
    Thauvin, Wijnaldum/Sissoko, Tiote, Aarons
    Mitrovic/De Jong, Perez/Toney

    Just no Gouffran please!!!

  • 39 MadisonToon // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:15 PM

Ummm…”strongest strongest” without risking anyone? No point in saying “strongest strongest” if what you really mean is “I’ll be playing the players I think should play and keeping as much of the starting XI off the pitch as I want to.” At least he’s not saying that they’ll play the starting XI and then not doing it, but it’s just pointless words at this point. I was hoping SM would not toe the party line as much as AP did, but his behavior seems pretty consistent.

Hopefully we get a win as our bench is much stronger than last season. Our second string should have a lot more fire in them to try and work their way into the starting XI which could lead to some good performances from Thauvin/DeJong/Perez/Mbabu etc.

  • 40 MadisonToon // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:18 PM

    Janmaat, Lascelles, Dummett, Mbabu
    Thauvin, Wiji, Tiote, Aarons
    Mitrovic, Toney

Bring in Mbemba if we’re in trouble and Perez/DeJong to push things forward when necessary. I’d keep Sissoko out to get him well-rested for ManU as we’ll need his strong runs to tire them out and hit them at the end of the game if we are to get anything from it.

Need to get Mitro firing and this is a great game for him to do so. Once he starts hitting the net it’ll happen consistently.

  • 41 Tsunki // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:19 PM

You have to expect SM to knuckle under because he’ll be under strict orders not to risk any ‘purples’ on a fruitless campaign especially with a bland window and a relegation run in looming.

  • 42 SPRINGY // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:19 PM

    geordie 157
i dont even know if marveaux is fit….heard nothing,i just want to make it clear…i dont want goofy to play!…but i expect him to as he’s normally came into midfield when anita or colback been out..thats all!lol

  • 46 hibbitt // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:26 PM

tsunki every chance you see mbabu and lascelles will start with aarons coming off the bench….i would not risk elliot either i would play darlow or woodman

  • 47 firebug666 // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:33 PM

According to a tweet from Newcastle Chronicle’s Chief Sports Writer Lee Ryder, Newcastle United boss Steve McLaren has said that Adam Armstrong is staying with Coventry City.
McLaren was asked a question about Armstrong at a press conference today and Ryder tweeted that McLaren said:”We’re keeing him there”

  • 48 croftus5678 // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:33 PM

i hate darlow he’s the worst keeper we have had in some time >.<

lescalles is ok ish i suppose and is still young and plenty of time to improve but they both def not worth the money paid.

woodman is twice the keeper darlow is even at his age.

This is for those who are interested in the bigger picture. If you don’t fancy reading or commenting on it, don’t.
It’s very easy to follow. I hope it doesn’t become a battleground of claim and counter claim.
It is a really good snapshot for those bored stiff by money matters, but still assume Sports Direct is still the all powerful tiger in its market.
I’m not an expert, but these figures seem to suggest it has a fight on its hands.
Reading it, I became pretty sure Ashley won’t be spending a lot of time directing operations at Newcastle at the moment, which may account for Moncur’s hint that we are on auto-pilot this window.

  • 50 ToonMatt // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:52 PM

The slug’s priority is the TV money and how much he can pocket, Cups annoy the slug he hates them.
On a more serious note, we can’t beat teams when we are at full strength so resting players will make no difference, Out of another cup competition (we have only won 3 FA cup ties since Ashley took over) and another season of complete misery under Mike Ashley.

  • 51 firebug666 // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:54 PM

I read that a little while ago, it seems JD Sports is now out performing SD, and having lowered their targets twice already (has a familiar ring to it) they look to lose out on £100m in profits, JD Sports on the other hand look to increase profits by more than the predicted £10m.

There is a definite shift in the market, as JD Sports shares increase at about the same rate that SD shares are decreasing.

    Some might say poetic justice.

    What will Ashley do?

Maybe he will sell Newcastle to increase his personal fortune.

By the way, I know nowt about finances or shares, it’s just the way I read it.

  • 52 BandB // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:55 PM

By auto pilot I mean the operational guidelines laid out publicly by Lee Charnley when he took over as MD in January 2014, a section of which is almost identical in wording and meaning to that Moncur comment posted on the blog earlier today.

  • 53 davetoon // Jan 8, 2016 at 4:58 PM

What a shame sports direct cant get relegated.

Seriously though if he has muppets like Charnley in charge at SD its mo wonder their earnings are plummeting

  • 54 BandB // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:00 PM

I think the football performance of Newcastle United has always taken up a minuscule part of Mr Ashley’s mental hard drive, and the doctrine by which he wants the club is run was laid out by Charnley and won’t be much departed from.

I believe Mr A is in the process of changing his portfolio, and may have some very “concrete” plans in mind for St James’s Park in the longer term.

  • 55 reilly // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:03 PM

so i take it SD wont be paying for advertising at sjp any time
theres only so many pairs of cheap socks you can buy.
SD will go the same way as JB sports.

  • 56 bettyswallocks // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:07 PM

If things don’t improve dramatically with serious investment in the squad this window then we will obviously need to let Ashley know how we feel.

What better way than to get a good section of fans singing and chanting JB Sports songs. Not too difficult to organise and this would really piss him off and drive our feelings home.

  • 57 ronaldo aarons // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:07 PM

I’d like to see mbabu, lascelles and thauvin start as well as rivière starting on the left of a 3 with de Jong behind mitrovic. I’d prefer to give aarons time off the bench considering he has only just started training and needs to be eased back. Would also like to see marveaux get some game time off the bench. Wouldn’t mind seeing dummett at cb either with tiote and sissoko in the middle.

  • 58 Yohan Kebab // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:09 PM

we have almost all the right players to play 352, except a lm player, who would we play there now, gini?, gouffran?

I would like to see us change it, 352 has fit our players natural game for a while now, perhaps something like this

    ———-Mbemba Colo Dummett
    Janmaat –Sissoko– Tiote —-Colback

  • 59 firebug666 // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:10 PM

Yeah he is the type of person who will cling on with his dying breath trying to pluck another few quid out of the club.

On Charnley, I think he will stick staunchly to the statement he made in 2014, We will not do ant business in January unless the deal is right for us, (most likely meaning selling players). He did go on to say that the new head coach would have to accept the sale of players without immediate replacement.

As we know the whole transfer policy is floored, as are those trying to implement it.

Earlier in the season I was confident we would stay up, now I’m not so sure, and if we don’t strengthen this month I think it will be exist stage left for us, curtains, fade to black.

Not sure how this one will play out, we are away, and changes must be made if we are to keep players fresh for Man U.

Those coming in may want to give a performance to show SM they are ready for the step up.

It will be interesting, I just hope we get a good game….and a win!

more profit and less staff win win for ashley

  • 66 BandB // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:25 PM

I have never disliked Ashley because he’s a bit tight, or because he doesn’t say much, or because he’s not the best football owner ever.
For the last five years I’ve feared he would be the end of our club.
We get taught from kids that if we are being driven anywhere, to keep an eye on the landmarks we are passing to check we are being taken where we are told we are being taken.
I’m still not passing any landmarks that say “top eight and a cup.” But I am seeing ones which suggest this bus isn’t headed where it says on the front.

  • 67 barkel // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:28 PM

Having looked at the fixture list in a hopeful way, you’d say out of all our remaining games there’s a chance to win most of them. City at home, Pool, Chelsea & Saints away are the ones that I’m most worried about. 14 games where we will pick up points. I hope to see us picking up about 28pts in the second half of the season

Take the training ground as an example.
The same Charnley statement hints that investment in success of the academy was crucial to the future blueprint for a successful club.
And yet that land (and a very nice piece of land it is too) and the plans associated with it seem to have been mothballed.

  • 71 firebug666 // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:33 PM

Every game is winnable with a little luck, but if we were to bring in a couple of quality players the task would become a little easier.

My fear is no one coming in and us then going down, and if we go down it would not be unlike Ashley to strip any further assets from the club and sell the shell to the first buyer with money.

At the moment things look bleak, but we always have hope, and I hope we get your 28pts plus a few more.

  • 72 hibbitt // Jan 8, 2016 at 5:36 PM

there’s 2 trains of thought with ashley regarding SD…1…he could buy the 45% of the shares in SD he does not own and take the company private thus keeping control….2….he could sell the 55% of the shares he owns in SD and leave the company if he did that would the SD ads disappear from st james if he had no interest in SD

There will be at least 4 changes, im sure we all know that, but it’s not as if he’s breaking up a winning side is it, Mbabu would be excellent to come in, lascalles n Dummett centre half’s, De Jong gets a full game, hopefully Aarons can be involved somewhere. The “FA” cup now means just that I’m afraid, it’s all about the money money in the Premiership.
