Newcastle Field Strong Side – Only One Change

watford FCnufc emblem

Steve McClaren has just announced the Newcastle team for the 3rd round FA Cup tie at Watford today and there’s just one change from the side that narrowly lost 1-0 at Arsenal last week with Kevin Mbabu coming in for Jack Colback in midfield.

Newcastle: Elliot, Janmaat, Coloccini, Mbemba, Dummett, Mbabu, Sissoko, Tiote, Wijnaldum, Mitrovic, Perez
Subs: Darlow, Lascelles, Sterry, Thauvin, Toney, Gouffran, De Jong

It may be a 3-5-2 formation for Newcastle today with Janmaat and Mbabu being the two wing-backs – and it’s a huge opportunity for young Mbabu to impress in this game.

So Steve is playing his strongest team with Jack Colback nursing a slight knee injury and we thought there would be three or four changes – but Steve is going all out for the win.

Good for him!

This is what McClaren has said about the Watford strikers and the club who have surprised a lot of people this season with their excellent start in the Premier League:

“I came across Deeney and Ighalo in the Championship last season and they were a large reason why Watford were promoted.”

“They are doing very well and have a good team behind them, as well.   They scored plenty of goals in the Championship and they have managed to step up and deliver in the Premier League.”

“Watford have surprised everybody.” “Credit to what Quique Flores has done in carrying on the good work from last season and it’s going to be a tough game for us on Saturday.”

“It’s one of the toughest away fixtures we could have asked for. We’re coming up against a Watford team in very good form, so it won’t be easy to win the game – but we will go there to win it.”

Not many fans think we can win this game today – about one out of four to be exact.

It would be a shock and a great win if the lads can pull this one off.

Pretty much nailed it but Mbabu to play LWB.

Reckon we have a chance playing 3-5-2.

But risky putting that team out we need to give fringe players a run out and see what they can do we have a more important game on tue night this could be suicidal.

if I’m being picky I’d just leave Gouffran out, end of. Liam Smith on the bench who’s a more natural cm if needed.

If it’s 442 then thats the most defensive of midfield partnerships i’ve ever seen Mbabu & Tiote!

    @Yohan Kebab

I doubt we’re moving towards playing 3-5-2 every week coz most teams only play one up front This is just to negate Watford’s front two.

3-5-2, that’s hardly believable. We were informed the formation against Arsenal was 4-4-2. We all witnessed how the 4-4-2 shaped up against Arsenal.

Reading between the lines, it is a 5-4-1. It is good to see Mbabu back in the team, he should play so long as he is performing as the best player in his position.

Wwsbrd clearly saying he should start when he is fit so stupid comment. Ferguson was not even close to Aaron’s he supplied a couple of good crosses when he broke through but don’t look great at taking his man on then got moved to left back which he certainly was not so again silly comparison tbh.

its smart fielding a defensive team to begin. ive noticed watford tire in the second half of games

troy deeney is probably in the top 5for best striker in the epl, smart player

. watford play the best football ive ever seen from a promoted side. wont be easy today

    OP

Landmark and King Neptune are the best on the street by a mile and no surprise Landmark was started by a brother and staff from King neptune.

Diamond menu at King Neptune is the dogs bollox!…my absolute favourite.

so going back to what I saying last time…if they were in Landmark they were going to impress. Did the bloke look like a player or management material?

Ferguson got in the team to cover injured El Toro and became every fans favourite ‘should be starting’ player, Aaron’s got on the field in a weakened cup team and became everyone’s ‘should be starting’ player…both left wingers both injured a lot both rated because of small glimpses of football

And his injury record is valid to bring up, u say play him every week but he is injured all the time, can’t plan a team with a vital position on the medical table more than the field

Personally I don’t know how good Aaron’s is as I haven’t seen nearly enough of him to judge

I cant see this being 3-5-2 on the offensive side it if anything it’s a 5-4-1 defensive game. If maclarean had any intent of playing a more attacking game he’d have moved wini into the centre and place onto the wing, he’s seen for weeks now our left side doesn’t provide much crosses,he’s seen for weeks dummett is the better of our two Fb defensively and should know by now wini likes to get into the centre.

I like De Jong but I just don’t think he suits us or the league.

Thauvin not starting is odd though, unless it is 352

    Watford side…
Gomes, Nyom, Cathcart, Prödl, Holebas; Watson, Guedioura; Berghuis, Deeney, Jurado; Oularé.

Subs: Arlauskis, Britos, Capoue, Anya, Abdi, Ibarbo, Ighalo

Best part of 20mil but they’ve hardly shown it now have they? Pretty much irrelevant what their price tag is imo.

Worrying though is that Mclaren doesn’t seem capable of mixing up his line-up… and the core undroppable players keep losing games!

Can’t say the line-up fills me with confidence but if Tiote can play like he did v Arsenal then we might have a chance. 3-1 to Watford is my shout.

I don’t know any fans that really rated Ferguson. He should be starting when he is fit obv can’t when he is injured but this year mclaren started him on the bench hence the comment.

I agree not seen enough of him to say h is going to be a top player but he should be starting in our team when he is fit because every time he does he outperforms the rest.

Wow..howabout some positivity! He’s playing a very strong first xi and bench. We haven’t kicked a ball yet. Why would he play 541 is he is playing that side. To be honest it will probably be somewhere between that and 352 so more a 3 2 3 2. Allowing the wing backs to run the line and still have 2 up top. We also get to see the 3 in the middle get forward. Dummett is more a cb than a lb anyway…what’s not good about that. Bring it on.

But no manager will drop a player coming off a long injury straight into the starting 11 and Aaron’s this far in the first team is either injured or coming back from a long term injury

And there was a lot who rated Ferguson and were calling for him to star in our team
