Newcastle Field Strong Side – Only One Change

watford FCnufc emblem

Steve McClaren has just announced the Newcastle team for the 3rd round FA Cup tie at Watford today and there’s just one change from the side that narrowly lost 1-0 at Arsenal last week with Kevin Mbabu coming in for Jack Colback in midfield.

Newcastle: Elliot, Janmaat, Coloccini, Mbemba, Dummett, Mbabu, Sissoko, Tiote, Wijnaldum, Mitrovic, Perez
Subs: Darlow, Lascelles, Sterry, Thauvin, Toney, Gouffran, De Jong

It may be a 3-5-2 formation for Newcastle today with Janmaat and Mbabu being the two wing-backs – and it’s a huge opportunity for young Mbabu to impress in this game.

So Steve is playing his strongest team with Jack Colback nursing a slight knee injury and we thought there would be three or four changes – but Steve is going all out for the win.

Good for him!

This is what McClaren has said about the Watford strikers and the club who have surprised a lot of people this season with their excellent start in the Premier League:

“I came across Deeney and Ighalo in the Championship last season and they were a large reason why Watford were promoted.”

“They are doing very well and have a good team behind them, as well.   They scored plenty of goals in the Championship and they have managed to step up and deliver in the Premier League.”

“Watford have surprised everybody.” “Credit to what Quique Flores has done in carrying on the good work from last season and it’s going to be a tough game for us on Saturday.”

“It’s one of the toughest away fixtures we could have asked for. We’re coming up against a Watford team in very good form, so it won’t be easy to win the game – but we will go there to win it.”

Not many fans think we can win this game today – about one out of four to be exact.

It would be a shock and a great win if the lads can pull this one off.

Pretty much nailed it but Mbabu to play LWB.

Reckon we have a chance playing 3-5-2.

  • 2 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:05 PM

But risky putting that team out we need to give fringe players a run out and see what they can do we have a more important game on tue night this could be suicidal.

  • 3 manxpie // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:05 PM

Wow strong team and 352 but can’t bloody watch it!!!

  • 4 geordie157 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:06 PM

so is that 353 or 442

Mbabu either lwb or possibly rb with Janmaat rw

Would definitely have started Thauvin though, needs a chance to impress.

    Nufc-83
How can u play someone who is rarely fit? And tbf the same could of been said for Ferguson when he first broke into the first team

  • 6 manxpie // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:07 PM

Thauvin not getting a start is pretty shocking tbh tho

  • 7 Yohan Kebab // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:08 PM

YES YES YES exact team I asked for yesterday except with Mbabu lwb 😀 😀 makes sense that we have been looking at guerreiro and Willems if this is where we are going moving forward

  • 8 geordie157 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:08 PM

if I’m being picky I’d just leave Gouffran out, end of. Liam Smith on the bench who’s a more natural cm if needed.

  • 9 WWSBRD // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:08 PM

de Jong and Thauvin best part of 20 mill can’t make our fa cup starting 11, bet they are over the moon they moved to us

  • 10 manxpie // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:09 PM

It’s 352 with janmaat and mbabu wing backs

  • 11 manxpie // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:11 PM

Anyone even got a radio link?

  • 12 SUTTY1978 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:11 PM

If it’s 442 then thats the most defensive of midfield partnerships i’ve ever seen Mbabu & Tiote!

  • 13 Brian Pinas // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:12 PM

    @Yohan Kebab

I doubt we’re moving towards playing 3-5-2 every week coz most teams only play one up front This is just to negate Watford’s front two.

  • 14 davetoon // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:12 PM

Assume were not on tv then?

  • 15 WestOzMag // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:12 PM

    Watford 3-1

  • 16 Thump // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:14 PM

I’d still sooner see SDJ and Thauvin get a start, but it’s good to see an actual strong team.

  • 17 AncientC // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:15 PM

3-5-2, that’s hardly believable. We were informed the formation against Arsenal was 4-4-2. We all witnessed how the 4-4-2 shaped up against Arsenal.

Reading between the lines, it is a 5-4-1. It is good to see Mbabu back in the team, he should play so long as he is performing as the best player in his position.

  • 18 manxpie // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:16 PM

Sutty it isn’t it’s 352 on the official site

  • 19 Nufc-83 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:16 PM

Wwsbrd clearly saying he should start when he is fit so stupid comment. Ferguson was not even close to Aaron’s he supplied a couple of good crosses when he broke through but don’t look great at taking his man on then got moved to left back which he certainly was not so again silly comparison tbh.

  • 20 Jib // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:17 PM

It’s a kind of shit or bust team .

Only fault I can find is Tiote is a knocking bet for a yellow !

  • 21 Mister Tuff // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:18 PM

Wow – only one change didn’t see that coming at all. Looks like Wally is indeed going for a win.

  • 22 lukes26 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:19 PM

its smart fielding a defensive team to begin. ive noticed watford tire in the second half of games

troy deeney is probably in the top 5for best striker in the epl, smart player

. watford play the best football ive ever seen from a promoted side. wont be easy today

  • 23 sparky55 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:21 PM

    OP

Landmark and King Neptune are the best on the street by a mile and no surprise Landmark was started by a brother and staff from King neptune.

Diamond menu at King Neptune is the dogs bollox!…my absolute favourite.

so going back to what I saying last time…if they were in Landmark they were going to impress. Did the bloke look like a player or management material?

  • 24 sparky55 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:23 PM

re todays team wouldn’t surprise me if SDJ demanded a move in January

  • 25 WWSBRD // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:24 PM

    Nufc-83
Ferguson got in the team to cover injured El Toro and became every fans favourite ‘should be starting’ player, Aaron’s got on the field in a weakened cup team and became everyone’s ‘should be starting’ player…both left wingers both injured a lot both rated because of small glimpses of football

And his injury record is valid to bring up, u say play him every week but he is injured all the time, can’t plan a team with a vital position on the medical table more than the field

Personally I don’t know how good Aaron’s is as I haven’t seen nearly enough of him to judge

  • 26 toonking // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:26 PM

I cant see this being 3-5-2 on the offensive side it if anything it’s a 5-4-1 defensive game. If maclarean had any intent of playing a more attacking game he’d have moved wini into the centre and place onto the wing, he’s seen for weeks now our left side doesn’t provide much crosses,he’s seen for weeks dummett is the better of our two Fb defensively and should know by now wini likes to get into the centre.

  • 27 geordie157 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:27 PM

I like De Jong but I just don’t think he suits us or the league.

Thauvin not starting is odd though, unless it is 352

    Watford side…
Gomes, Nyom, Cathcart, Prödl, Holebas; Watson, Guedioura; Berghuis, Deeney, Jurado; Oularé.

Subs: Arlauskis, Britos, Capoue, Anya, Abdi, Ibarbo, Ighalo

  • 28 manxpie // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:28 PM

Hmm found a link on vipleague it has all the games tho but most of them say audio only except ours, scums, Eastleigh,s and stokes so fingers crossed

  • 29 AncientC // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:28 PM

toonking, I agree. This is what it looks like to me, I could be wrong though.

    ——————Elliot
    Jan–Mbemba–Colo–Dumt–Mbabu
    Sissoko–Tiote–Wijnaldum–Perez
    —————Mitrovic

  • 30 geordie157 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:28 PM

So Ighalo not starting is good, although the young Belgian lad Oulare is another bright prospect

  • 31 Sliema // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:30 PM

    Sutty

Best part of 20mil but they’ve hardly shown it now have they? Pretty much irrelevant what their price tag is imo.

Worrying though is that Mclaren doesn’t seem capable of mixing up his line-up… and the core undroppable players keep losing games!

Can’t say the line-up fills me with confidence but if Tiote can play like he did v Arsenal then we might have a chance. 3-1 to Watford is my shout.

  • 32 Nufc-83 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:31 PM

I don’t know any fans that really rated Ferguson. He should be starting when he is fit obv can’t when he is injured but this year mclaren started him on the bench hence the comment.

I agree not seen enough of him to say h is going to be a top player but he should be starting in our team when he is fit because every time he does he outperforms the rest.

  • 33 AncientC // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:33 PM

Obbi Oulare is 6ft 5in. Colocinni is in for a busy afternoon.

  • 34 OneAlanShearer // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:34 PM

Wow..howabout some positivity! He’s playing a very strong first xi and bench. We haven’t kicked a ball yet. Why would he play 541 is he is playing that side. To be honest it will probably be somewhere between that and 352 so more a 3 2 3 2. Allowing the wing backs to run the line and still have 2 up top. We also get to see the 3 in the middle get forward. Dummett is more a cb than a lb anyway…what’s not good about that. Bring it on.

  • 35 AncientC // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:37 PM

OneAlanShearer, I am hopeful myself, but looking at the line up, he has 5 defenders and an ultra-defensive midfielder on the pitch.

  • 36 manxpie // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:37 PM

Steve has just said it’s 3 at the back and a new system

  • 37 Sliema // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:38 PM

    nufc 93

Well Ferguson put in a shift in the odd appearances I saw of him but he was pretty ordinary as a footballer don’t you reckon?

Championship player if I ever saw one, maybe we should keep him for next season!

  • 38 Nufc-83 // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:38 PM

  • 39 WWSBRD // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:38 PM

    Nufc-83
But no manager will drop a player coming off a long injury straight into the starting 11 and Aaron’s this far in the first team is either injured or coming back from a long term injury

And there was a lot who rated Ferguson and were calling for him to star in our team

I posted last week that I would try Janmaat in midfield as he looks better going forward than defending – gets caught out of position time and time again – Even put Colo in Midfield and Colback the other full-back but not today as he is injured.

It’s rather difficult to feel sorry for McClaren because of injuries seeing as he find to hard to rotate what he’s got at his disposal regardless!

  • 51 lesh // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:49 PM

McClaren’s damned whichever way he turns.

Bearing in mind we’ve got ManU on Tuesday, I can only assume his game plan is to take the game to Watford and get two or three in the bag early and kill the game. He’s then able to make substitutions to rest key players for Tuesday.

And if key players suffer injuries…… ?

Had he fielded a team made up of players who don’t normally figure in the first team, McClaren’d be slammed for doing that and failing to go for the FA Cup. And the FA’d have something to say about that and since we’re not ManU, Citeh or the bindippers, we’d be penalised in some ways.

He’s between a rock and a hard place where Ashley wants a cup run but is that wise when relegation’s staring us full I’m the face?

Ashley’s policies along with Charnley’s incompetence are coming him to roost.

  • 52 NYMAG // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:49 PM

Janmatt is hopeless going forward, his final ball is always shocking, he cuts inside too regularly and has no left foot so forces the cross with his right foot. Watch any of our last 10 games to see what I’m talking about.

  • 53 will die for the toon army // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:51 PM

Its Thauvin & De Jong that poor for Mbabu to come in before them.

    ………….Elliott
    ……Mbemba….Colo….Dummett
    …………….Tiote
    Janmatt…Sissoko….Wijnaldum…Mbabu
    ………Perez…….Mitrovic
That is an attack minded side.

  • 54 toonking // Jan 9, 2016 at 2:53 PM

just as I see it myself, this manager can’t bare having a team without 6 defensive players and therefore he needs to add an extra defender now that colback is unavailable.

He’s already got history of defensive games against lower league teams when sheff wed 2nd string over powered ourselves in league cup.

lesh…both Charnley and Ashley have made it very clear they won’t fire their manager…they’ll more likely give him an 5 year extension.

….McClaren is not caught between any rock or a hard place…if he is it’s because he has put himself there.

I’m not surprised they haven’t done that again. It’s a strong side and I hope they play like they are trying to progress.
Feeling we need to chuck the cups to concentrate on the league is the direct result of being in relegation trouble.

Cabaye was a one off freaky buy that I’m sure the fat b@st@rd refers to all the time when hammering home his philosophy and mantra for our transfer policy.

Truth is you have to be a very very good player to be dropped into the premiership and expect to hit ground running…Not in Henri managed that.

Unless you pay circa 25-30 million for a tried and tested international I think everyone is a gamble because there’s no other league like the Premiership.

In other words we’re fcuked…there isn’t a striker out there can save our season for the money we’ll be prepared to spend, and there’s no fcuker wants to come here now and play championship footy next year…coming to newcastle is like getting the black spot

    Toonacious.

    3 big differnces…

1.) They have a good coach.

2.) They have a good scouting network and agreement with Italian clubs

3.) They have all he momentum in the world after having taken the Championship by storm last year and quickly getting into the winning mentality this year.

Newcastle have forgotten how to win and if you dropped any of the watford team into the newcastle their form would dive because there is no belief in the team and no direction from the Manager.

Our problems are at all levels and it’s our transfer policy that’s come home to roost and our owners defiance in paying out top money for a top coach.

When you have players on the pitch like Wijnaldum, Perez, Mitrovic and De Jong and cannot score a goal something is terribly wrong with the set up.

Delivery, through balls, and general reading of the game are sadly lacking, these players don’t seem to trust each other.

They have to sack McClaren. He is completely hopeless and always has been. I wouldn’t mind so much if he was trying to play that attacking, passing football he talked about when he came. But he’s just playing the same old negative cr*p he’s played at all his clubs.

the way I see it is this, if Ashley does not spend at least 40 million on a new striker, attacking midfielder, central defender and a good winger then all the money he has put into the club to buy it, pay off our debts that are somehow still there, if he doesn’t do nothing about this way bye bye to 140 million because theres no way in hell this team will get out the fizzy pop league none, sell up and stay in London if you have any sence Ashley because your time here is over

That is a trick they thought they could simply keep recycling but as a philosopy it only works to be a feeder club like Ajax where you have a long established academy producing home-grown talent, a long established scouting network that brings the likes of Ronaldo from Brazil and it works because they are playing in a weaker league where even after selling your star player the rest of the team continue to battle for silverware. The way NUFC have tried to replicate this in a short space of time has been ill-informed and left the fans, managers and players totally disillusioned.

Listening not watching. Commentators seemed to agree that it was not a question of playing defensively. We lost through a shocking back pass and in a poor game had more chances to win with Perez and Mitro missing good chances. It’s not rocket science we need a Shelvey in midfield to deliver the ball into final third quicker and a ST to get in front/ goal side of defenders. Mitro is not mobile enough and in short term Cisse more likely to start scoring.
Noticed corner count massively in our favour too. A dominant CB would improve things at both ends.
