Newcastle Chief Scout Graham Carr has been tracking Toulouse striker Wissam Ben Yedder since early 2013 and like any player Graham takes time in watching over a long period of time – Wissam could end up signing for Newcastle United.
We saw that with Florian Thauvin in August when out of the blue Newcastle signed the winger when we really could have done with a defensive player – preferably a center-back at the time.
Wissam Ben Yedder – long term Graham Carr target
And there has been some transfer news recently with Toulouse head coach Dominique Arribage admitting his 25 year-old French U21 striker could be sold in January:
“With every game we have in January I will have several press conferences a week and every time I will get asked the question about Ben Yedder,” he said at a news conference.
“I will say that I am very happy to have him in the squad. He is a powerful player and I want him to be with us as long as possible, but indeed there is a possibility that he leaves.”
Marseille are said to be interested, but it would be just like Newcastle to sign the 25 year-old who would be cheaper than a lot of other strikers we are being linked with in January.
The cheaper targets still seem to be important to a still too-thrifty Newcastle this month.
But with the player having no Premier League experience then if we did sign him it would be debatable if he could score the goals that are necessary to save us from relegation this season.
Ben Yedder scored 15 goals in 38 appearances last season and since signing on from UJA Alfortville in 2010 he has made 150 appearances for the French club with 53 goals so he’s a decent goalscorer.
Spurs and West Ham are also credited with an interested in the 5ft 7 ins striker.
The fact the player has recently started to follow Newcastle players Adam Armstrong, Rolando Aarons and Florian Thauvin on his Twitter account has also fueled rumors he may be headed to Newcastle.
We shall see.
