Newcastle To Launch Record Breaking Bid For Striker

4:07 pm, Sunday, January 10th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 319 Comments

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle may be ready to launch a club record bid to nab West Brom striker Saido Berahino, who wants to leave West Brom in January.

And since there is bad feeling between West Brom and Spurs because of the antics of Spurs trying to prise the young striker away from the Baggies in the summer – it could be an opportunity for Newcastle to move in and seal the deal.

Saido Berahino

West Brom striker Saido Berahino

The Mail is reporting Newcastle are readying the bid, but apparently there was an £18M record bid made by Newcastle in the summer – and that bid is still valid according to reports today.

Newcastle record signing is still the £17M we paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen in August of 2005, followed by the £15M we paid Blackburn Rovers for Alan Shearer in the summer of 1996.

And last summer the £14.5M signing of Georginio Wijnaldum from Dutch club PSV was the third highest, but this deal would be the most expensive ever for Newcastle.

Saido has had some problems at West Brom since the Spurs overtures last summer, but he would be an excellent acquisition for us.

The big challenge for Newcastle will be to persuade him to join us when we are in danger of being relegated in May.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

How long to get him match fit and then his mind in the right place after a deadline day purchase? A transfer is unlilely to hapen say tomorrow.

If he was fit and in form I’d say go for him. However given both parties current circumstances i’d say pass on this one.

  • 2 ronaldo aarons // Jan 10, 2016 at 4:10 PM

18 million?? Figures around this number has been bandied around a lot the past few days, it’s interesting. I still see berahino as much as a gamble as a foreign player if I’m honest.

  • 3 FollowFollow // Jan 10, 2016 at 4:11 PM

We need players who are in form now whatever the long term potential

I just wanted to chip in on the Thauvin issue.

I was at the game yesterday and nobody played well. Mitrovic is lazy, Janmatt was awful, Gini invisible (other than that brilliant through ball to Deeney). The only one to have an ok game in my opinion was Mbemba.

Thauvin was useless when he came on, but so was everything else. The thing that pushed the away fans over the edge was him not challenging for the ball right in front of the away end, then losing the ball and rolling around on the floor because somebody stepped on his finger or something.

Have to say I don’t like fans booing our own players or negative chants towards our players. I haven’t been to a game for a few years so this came as a surprise and disappointment to me. It’s too soon to judge Thauvin however when you pay 13m for a player you do expect more . Having said that, nobody we bought in summer has been worth it other than Mbemba and maybe Gini (in flashes).

There were boos when Mbabu was subbed, understandably he was having a good game. This could be interpreted by Thauvin as being directed at him. I do feel sorry for him, there was a lot of hate directed at him and no matter how much you get paid that’s going to have an effect mentally.

The hostility towards the team at the end of the game is worrying and highlights the huge problem we have as a club. Especially when you think although we didn’t play brilliantly we definitely deserved to win.

Never seen Berahino play well, hope we don’t sign him. I’d rather Austin, Remy or Carrol, all of whom would probably be cheaper. Hell I’d take Jonathon Walteres over Berahino. This surely won’t happen for that money knowing Ashley

  • 5 optimistic prime // Jan 10, 2016 at 4:12 PM

This would be a good pound for pound signing, he must be around a 1000lbs ATM

  • 6 ronaldo aarons // Jan 10, 2016 at 4:13 PM

I love watching pochettino teams play although I only first heard of him as a manager at Southampton. An underrated manager.

And how many believes we are seriously bidding this much or even close for players?

I can see us bidding for this Saivet fella. He is reactively cheap and most importantly we don’t need him 😉

  • 8 WWSBRD // Jan 10, 2016 at 4:15 PM

  • 9 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 10, 2016 at 4:20 PM

As I understand it, NUFC has the seventh highest wage bill in the EPL. Is it not right to remember that when bashing Ashley?

  • 11 ronaldo aarons // Jan 10, 2016 at 4:24 PM

Every time I hear saivet I just remember when I was younger he was absolutely amazing on champ man. I’ve not seen him play this year in his supposedly new dm position. Though in past performances as a winger or striker I’d say no thanks.

What I would do in the summer or even now is sell de Jong, as much as I would like him to succeed, and get Franco Vasquez. Perfect number 10 I think he’s a bit unsettled because dybala left in the summer.

If we’re the 7th highest payers in pl then one of two things is up.

1, Ashley’s still paying Cabaye HBA Deubuchy etc and pocketing the wages.

2, we’re paying over the odds wages for players not fit for purpose due to being a poorly run club.

    Either way ASHLEY OUT!

So what if wage bill is high, were 19th richest club on the planet according to Deloitte. That actually makes us 7th richest in the premier league. So having the 7th highest wage bill should be expected.

  • 17 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 10, 2016 at 4:30 PM

Berahino excellent acquisition I don’t think so … Why has he not been bought yet… Bad attitude , bad value why are Spurs after Loic Remy then. Like dogfish I’ve never seen him play well; even Austin is more of a tryer. He’d be a waste of money with all the better value strikers about. Please don’t sign him look elsewhere pay less and get better. It keeps coming back to Berahino because we can’t get anyone else. West Brom don’t want him they’d rather have the money. I could go on

It’s alright, Neville is a good pundit but I always get the impression that he thinks he can do better when criticising a manager. Now he’s finding out it is very difficult. To be honest it is what Valencia deserve, they weren’t doing as good as last year but the previous manager nuno didn’t deserve the sack.

18-20 mil for lazy useless lump, no thanks. Why do we not just take Arma back? He’s banging goals in, his confidence will be soaring and he works for 90 mins, seems the logical choice but hey it’s Nufc and there is no logic.

I cant them doing anything thats going to get our hearts racing in this window, just more let downs.

How much do teams get for the parachute payment? If it’s 50-80 mil the fat man’s not going to care. Yeah he’s lost a billion in the last 5 weeks but that’s only stock market shares that can just as easily go back up (i’m not an expert on that stuff).

    Jib Jibberish (the blog pest).
You mentioned earlier that you spilled coffee over your dog. I’m always interested in the breeds/types of dogs that people own and their choices of hound often suggests what type of person they are. I can entertain the idea that perhaps there are two types of hound that you own – would you be able to confirm which one of my suggestions is right please :-
    1. You own a toy poodle named Trixie – which has a pink collar and pink ribbons. This is a lap dog which you allow on your lap as well as carrying it around in your handbag.
    2. You own a heinz 57 mongrel – mostly bred from an aggressive American Pitbull. You call the dog “Killer” and use it to frighten the neighbours children. You chose this dog as most other criminal families own them.

Thanks in advance -a speedy answer will be much appreciated.

  • 57 AncientC // Jan 10, 2016 at 5:19 PM

The very same Berahino who criticised his club owner on Twitter.

Players that are liberal with free-speech need not apply, as far as Ashley is concerned.

  • 58 Pootle2118 // Jan 10, 2016 at 5:20 PM

How do chaps, how’s everyone doing today?

As far as Berahino is concerned, yes £18M would seem to be a pipe dream figure for Fatman to make and I quite agree that he is out of shape atm and has had attitude problems since the summer. BUT, we all agree that we need proven PL players (especially a goalscorer) and everyone knows that for some reason, English players seem to have a few extra million added to their value no matter how good/bad they are. I do have one question though…which other PROVEN PL goalscorer is either available or unwanted by their clubs? Of those who are available, who of those are valued at £18M or less? Austin….yes he may be available and he did score goals in his one season in the PL but we baulked at the £15M QPR wanted in the summer and, from all the stuff I’ve read, the price hasn’t come down that much if any! Remy….yes we could get him on loan, possibly, IF we can convince him to ignore the North v South issue again and then match his wages from Chelski. The other name that keeps getting mentioned (God knows why) is Andy ‘sick-note’ Carroll who, IF he could get past his ‘I’m better than Shearer so you should all bow to me and surrender’ chip on his shoulder, would take a good few weeks to get match fit and then it would be crossed fingers that he stays fit.
IMO though, this is probably a mute argument as all transfer gossip text has Spurs readying a £20M bid for Berahino which may or may not include Townsend.

  • 59 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 10, 2016 at 5:23 PM

I mention our wage bill because others repeatedly mention that Carr has his hands tied and we won’t compete for players. They forever ask where all the money has gone and accuse Ashley of trousering it. It appears Ashley is paying the wages, he’s just given responsibility to the wrong man who’s wasting eyewatering millions on useless imports like Thauvin. For that, the buck stops with Ashley.

  • 60 tequilamag // Jan 10, 2016 at 5:27 PM

All transfers are a gamble. Most people were frothing at the mouth with Mitro last Summer. Look at Depay twice as much as Wini and half as effective,
The problem is the job was only half done in the Summer.

You actually dont need to spend big money to be successful you just have to scout properly and to find players that fit the league and the system you want to play

Carr never seems to do this which makes me think he doesn’t watch the Toon play or the premiership I mean where would he find the time if he is out looking at players every weekend in other countries?

Just relegate us now the club does not deserve to be in the premiership

That’s the weirdest use of stats I’ve ever seen
You’ve just (probably inadvertently) backed up my case.
    Martins 10 goals
    Owen 13 goals
We end up 12th on 43 points

This is pish poor even by your standards – you have NOT answered either of my questions, as usual dodging when you have made a wild assertion which is clearly wrong and for which there is no evidence.

You claimed “our build up play and service into the danger areas is as good as I’ve seen in the last 10 years.”

Yet mysteriously …. we have the lowest goals scored and just over half of what we scored in the 07-08 season at the same stage, which is well within your ten year period.

We have failed to score in 6 out of ten of our last EPL games and managed only 2 or 3 shots on goal for a good few of the last five games.
So where is this excelllent service ?

You then defend Mitro in another post for his goal scoring record over the last two seasons. It is either rubbish service or rubbish finishing. You can’t have it both ways.

By the way our EPL goal scoring record in the last 10 games is

So either prove your case or have the grace to admit you are wrong.

  • 69 the broons // Jan 10, 2016 at 5:45 PM

Was probs me! Goal scoring is a non acquirable skill. You’re either born with it or not. Strikers can work on shooting but the ability to be in the right positions in the right times are priceless.

Answers my question then how can he really know what the team needs if he doesn’t go to our games ? Especially if he has final say ? Unless he watches videos of our games but for a scout who is Director of Football essentially you should be watching us from the stands to see the whole perspective

I remember the Chronicle put an article up ages ago saying over his time managing Pardew had suggested names like Puncheon, Shelvey and Cresswell among a lot of other players that would be ideal for the club but Carr vetoed them all

Come on – we gnow this script: lots of rumours of failed bids, one or two more gambles on foreigners brought in, no PL experience bought and Arma recalled on Jan 31st so he’s “like a new signing.”
Then a desperate relegation battle with survival on the last day.
Repeat indefinitely until the Toon Army finally realise that this garbage will continue as long as they keep turning up.
Which may never happen because the Toon Army – sad to say it – are gullible, manipulated zombies who lack the guts to walk away.
Soz lads but it’s been nearly 8 years. The coffee was made, wafted and went cold and nobody gave it a sniff. It’s embarrassing.

  • 78 NoahJ // Jan 10, 2016 at 5:57 PM

He lacks match practice (when we need change NOW), his form is patchy at best, his attitude stinks, and his price is inflated by him being English.

What are the powers that run this club actually thinking!?

  • 79 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 10, 2016 at 5:57 PM

Yeah but he is supposed to be picking players to play in a system and how they want to play so he must have something in mind when he is looking at players surely other than resale value ?

He is maybe just a fan of French football so just buys players because he wants us to play that slow pace way?

Because time and again we sign players not suited to the premiership or how our team plays so something is not right with the way he chooses players

I think we bought good players in january, but we should buy at least one creative cm Cabaye type and one quick winger Redmond type…now we have to buy Shelvey, Berahino and Coulibaly…and Remy on loan…and we will be good, really good, I watched a lot of Napoli games and Coulibaly is a beast man, great defender, just what we are all screaming for, beast CB….Berahino and Remy have the needed pace and Shelvey creativity we lack…they all would give us something what we are missing, we dont have bad team at all, we have some really good players, but we have a lot of missing pieces, creative CM which is for me the most important person on the pitch, quick striker and strong CB…if Ashley wont spend, we will be in big trouble, they have to buy and this four players would be great…

Chancel and Wini have been decent buys though. I don`t think Carr is a genius but the problems go a lot deeper than the scout

  • 89 Munster Mag // Jan 10, 2016 at 6:04 PM

I see palace won again. Lethal on counter attack. Good formula for an FA cup win. Hard to beat, can defend all day and can score enough to do get the job done. Paper i read talked about a never say die attitude. When we see all this, it still begs the question why carr cud not get pardew the players to suit him. For me it keeps coming back to carr. The player chooser, the manager chooser. All over a nice bottle of french red, but not in st james park. In bordeaux or somewhere nice, watching a ponce like thauvin or cabella and wondering how he would look on a cold day in watford.

  • 90 hibbitt // Jan 10, 2016 at 6:05 PM

teq……..thats why its not a good idea to have one person doing two jobs director of football should be at every game chief scout should be watching others play very difficult for one man to do both jobs at the same time no other prem club combines these jobs carr should either be one or the other not both that’s one of the reasons we make so many mistakes in the transfer market

  • 91 jimiley // Jan 10, 2016 at 6:07 PM

I think the Saivet deal could be on the cards for 3 million. Why? Becuase he is French and black ( we seem to sign a lot of black French players. Its not a racist comment rather an observation before somebody sounds off),He is probably crap a la Thauvin. He will need time to settle in when we dont have the time but it just sums up our headless owners panicking like mad to sign somebody. He plays midfield/wing where we least need a crap player and he must be stupid to come here to fight a relegation battle. I think this one is in the bag. Relegation beckons.

  • 93 JackButler // Jan 10, 2016 at 6:10 PM

Carr has to take a large part of the blame as he has wasted massive amounts on players who are simply poor/not suited to this league. He is the man who decides who comes in, he scouts the players so he has to take a fair amount of the blame for where we are right now.

Another Jan window of must needs but gambles will take place everyone knows what we need apart from the people at the club, let’s face it it will never change he made a nice speech at the end of the season spent money not wisely again gambling on young players with no prem experience again and we are back to square 1.

Ian Tool – on the subject of dogs – I strongly suspect that I would be correct in suggesting that the breed of dog/canine you own is a jackal.
Let us take a moment in listing the “qualities” of a jackal.
Jackals are opportunist omnivores and predatores to small and medium sized animals and are prolific scavengers. Jackals are crespucular – most active at dawn and dusk (bit like you coming on here after work when you are pissed).
It vigourously defends its’ territory by chasing intruding rivals and marking its’ territory with urine and faeces. (bit like you on here wanting to be “top dog”).
Jackals may sometimes assemble in small packs to scavenge a carcass (bit like you joining forces with Jib and Welsh).
The black backed jackal is the most aggressive of the jackals and has more quarrelsome intrapack relationships. (bit like you causing trouble on here).

Rudyatrd Kipling in the Jungle Book described Tapaqui – as the mad cowardly jackal – Wow !! -did you know Rudyard from an earlier life?

Ian “The Jackal” Tool – I must say has a bit of a ring to it.

Shelvey being blasted by Swansea fans, claiming he was lazy today, losing possession and not tracking back, 3 shots from 40 yards plus. Pass completion was awful and gave the ball away more than any other player. They also took him off set pieces as he over hut them or under hit them.

Apparently they think he thinks he’s better than he actually is!!

  • 105 Jib // Jan 10, 2016 at 6:30 PM

The latest player we’ve sniffed around according to Euro media is the Italian Stephan El-Shaarawy (nickname the Pharoah cos his dad’s Egyptian).
He plays as a striker for Monaco on loan from Milan.
    I don’t think there’s a chance we’ll sign him at all.

I mention it merely as confirmation that we are trying for the right type of player.

  • 106 jimiley // Jan 10, 2016 at 6:30 PM

Of course its relevant and I knew somebody would have to play the racist card. You cannot help yourself. If we signed 11 Chinese I would call them Chinese. I do not want 11 Chinese in the team Its not a racist comment.I do not want 11 black French players in the team. I do not want 11 white French players in the team. I would also be annoyed and surprised if we only signed white players. I do not want 11 white players in the team. White player tend to me more skilful (thats a generalistion and there are many skillful black players) whilst black players are faster and more powerful in general. A top team often has a mix of the two. Black people run faster and Africans run further than white people. But they are shit swimmers.

  • 107 ronaldo aarons // Jan 10, 2016 at 6:32 PM

    RE Shelvey

I think at the moment his head is turned and he’s 99% leaving this window. Yes he’s been accused of being lazy etc. But honestly this guy is a class above any of our midfielders. The stats speak for themselves. 2nd most key passes made in the league I think. It was only a few months ago that they were going on about him having such good passing ability and class. He will massively improve our side if we can get him. He is our cabaye replacement and he’s English.

He’s big and powerful as well also, to add some much needed physicality to our MF. Every time we’ve played against Swansea he’s always dominated the midfield and completely tore us apart

  • 122 JamesToon // Jan 10, 2016 at 7:12 PM

And I understand fans questioning Berahino’s attitude as well, and what he did to force a move to Spurs is wrong. But he’s a proven premier league goal scorer, will add much needed pace up front and I think we have a decent chance of getting him as west brom’s relationship with Spurs gives us the advantage.

Get Berahino, Shelvey, a winger, left back and centre half and we’ll have a decent team…with the right coaching and management.

Shelvey may be narked at being benched for the league games then hoyed in to play in a semi second string team against lower league opposition, with the added likelihood he’ll be back to splinters again afterwards. And he doesn’t see eye to eye with the chairman.

If we are looking for players to hit the ground running then we need to sign players who aren’t suffering from lack of confidence or going through a spell of bad form. Cisse when he joined was on fire because he came here on the back of performing well.

Players lacking confidence will not likely boost the club in the here and now. If Swansea don’t think Shelvey is pulling his weight and putting in performances or he doesn’t have the fight then what good will come of him being here? I’m uncertain on him in the terms of immediate requirements but longterm I think he can grow and hopefully fulfill his potential

He gave a whole generation of supporters an utterly inflated sense of the importance , deeds , and place of their club in the world of Football.

He won nowt and doesn’t even have the best winning percentage figures (Chris Hughton at nearly 60 % does).

This argument has been done to death mate, ask yourself this, if the club was empty, then the media, players etc would believe that the supporters have given up, it may or may not have the desired effect, however if you have a stadium full of passionate Geordie’s and a large percentage of them are making their voices heard then that message is getting out world wide.

I cannot go anymore but if I could I probably would, a protest inside the ground for a TV match would have a far greater effect than an empty stadium. and for those that are not at the match, they could still make an impact outside the ground and outside SD stores etc.

Personally I think if the stadium were empty for a match that would be the end of us.

Ashley uses TV matches to advertise his tat shop, we should use the same to voice our discontent.

I didn’t bother spell checking this post as I’m not sure you would notice.

    You say,

“In answer to your continuing childish playground taunting, my reply would be :- Waa Waa waa.”

You have spent the last two days posting derogatory remarks about old Blackley in a series of posts designed solely to restore your reputation. I didn’t respond to any of them. I just let you continue with your rehabilitation exercise.

Eventually, I post today to give you some friendly advice and spare you further embarrassment. Your best answer? “Waa Waa waa”

Again, you describe me as “An intransigent shouter who treads over his own rules about personal taunts”.

So I repeat. If near the end of a debate, you suddenly come out with,

“This is the embarrassing bit for you – I do help run a limited company”,

are you saying I can’t roll about laughing.

    Or when you say,

“Sorry if it’s intimidating but there it is”

I can’t believe any reasonable person would consider that is intimidating never mind capable of winning an argument. Cringeworthy.

If you make the man the ball by claiming you’d trumped me with your fine credentials, is it legitimate then to play the man? When the man becomes the ball?

Besides, playing the man is not the best description of my mantra. My mantra is playing the man wins no arguments; it loses them.

Anyone who brings so much light relief and laughter to the blog, as you have done lately, should be commended. So please don’t fuss about your reputation. Things are forgotten on this blog almost as soon as they’re written. Your reputation will be restored in no time. There really is no need to get involved in post after post of old Blackley bashing. Let’s move on together and spare the blog.

Bordeaux President Tiraud recently stated that the club would not be keeping players who have made their desire to leave open.

It is also important to note that the player was absent from training this morning.

Each person has the right to protest in their own way, you (thank god) have decide you will not be going anymore, good on you pal, you are making your statement.

Where you a falling down is by calling all those who have chosen to keep going to game “idiots” and then telling them they should not be going.

There are many ways to protest, but the best way is having plenty of fans inside the stadium, in the mouth of the lion pulling it’s teeth out.

As I said, an empty stadium may show Ashley the fans are not happy with him (but I have an inkling that he may already know that) but the effect it would have on the players for example could be catastrophic.

Our team already lack confidence and have a very low moral, can you imagine how they would feel walking out into an empty stadium.

You say my view “is no way a balanced view of MA from the vast bulk of Newcastle fans”.

How do you know what is a balanced view of MA from the vast bulk of NUFC fans? I’ve noticed some guy comes on here solely to insult ST holders and tell them to boycott SJP. 50,000 ST holders ignore such insults and continue to go to the match. The ground is often full. So who makes up this vast bulk of NUFC fans whose minds you know?

  • 171 Transfer Sage // Jan 10, 2016 at 8:44 PM

I prefer to think of what Kegan did was show us and any club what having an owner who backs the manager and team can do with a passionate set of fans, bring joy to a city even if they don’t quite win some silverware.

Look at other clubs, Leicester this season, Southampton in recent seasons, Swansea for a while, Wigan for a couple of years, to name a few. Teams who aren’t fancied but have an owner who is looking to improve, to give the fans something to be happy with/proud of even if it is just for a short period of time.

I don’t think many Newcastle fans think they have a right to be near the top. What I think we believe is that we have the right to have an owner who has he best interest of the club, on and off the field at heart.

I have to agree, a lot of new posters brining controversy to the blog, I do feel though that as they are new and come out suddenly and passionately on controversial issues designed to split the fans that we can see past them.

For the most part the usual bloggers are far too busy with their own ongoing battles of one-upmanship and my dogs better than your dog etc to even notice them.

I have a feeling that protests are not far off, and depending on what the club do this month may determine when those protests will start.

Last season showed the strength of fan power from a divided fan base, when they begin this time I think there will be a lot more fans onboard.

I am still a firm believer in fan power.

  • 177 Transfer Sage // Jan 10, 2016 at 8:48 PM

I don’t go to matches now, haven’t done so for around 3 years since I got fed up of Ashley but others have the right to do as they please. I just don’t go out of principle, not because I think it will make a difference.

No club ever gets an empty stadium consistently, even if we only had 20,000 go (unheard of for any club to drop attendances that much) Ashley would still be raking in the money from the TV deals. Losing around 15/20mil in ticket sales wouldn’t harm him too much, especially with the TV deal next year.

Ultimately there isn’t a queue of people these days, in the current financial market, desperate to buy a football club in the top flight as it’s very expensive, especially a one in our position where relegation is very much a possibility and potential income to the club would drop massively.

  • 180 toon kk // Jan 10, 2016 at 8:51 PM

Personally I think everyone has the right to boycott games or not, personally I got absolutely fed up of wasting money watching dross, I’ve always maintained to myself I’ll renew my season ticket when there’s some exciting football to watch.
Firebug picked up on a point boycotts could have catastrophic consequences on a already low on confidence team, maybe so. But booing and calling players “not fit to wear a black and white shirt” during games could be worse.

  • 181 Transfer Sage // Jan 10, 2016 at 8:52 PM

I’m not saying we shouldn’t try to make change, I think it would be great if fan’s could force change. Just there are a lot of things preventing potential buyers from taking over these days so would be quite difficult even with Ashley willing to sell.

I think relegation is possible this year and I doubt we’d bounce back with this team, especially given a few might leave.

That could hurt Ashley more than anything else and make him try his hardest to cash in before consistent, long term losses could kick in.

So looking at comments on other blogs and Twitter it appeared that Mbabu played pretty well yesterday?

Surely he has to get a run of games then as the boy has pace , can defend and loves a tackle

352 could be the way forward for us Pearson done it last season for Leicester because he had nothing to lose we have reached that stage where we need wins starting with Man Utd

They have injuries in midfield so its a great time to get a much needed win

  • 184 JackButler // Jan 10, 2016 at 8:55 PM

Shelvey would be yet another half arsed addition to our squad. He has a very questionable attitude and work ethic so he’s the last type of player we need.

But again we seem to be looking in the wrong areas of the side, we need a proven goal scorer and defensive additions, by comparison, our midfield is okay as we concede for fun and can’t score.

If Carr fails to deliver the players we truly need in this window we are heading for the drop

  • 190 firebug666 // Jan 10, 2016 at 9:06 PM

There are no guarantees that Ashley will sell if we go down, last time we went down he had offers but knocked them back, was suppose to meet with some people but went to the bar instead.

He didn’t want to sell then and is unlikely to do so again, but what would happen if he did?

Well first I reckon he would strip the club of all assets he could make some money on, then he would probably make up some iron clad contract benefiting his SD tat shop, that any new owner would not be able to get out of.

The he would sell what is left to the highest bidder, and we would most likely be worse off than if he stayed.

Be careful what you wish for.

Your fake mirth is cringeingly feeble, but you seem to enjoy it so I’m happy to supply humour, even if you have to contrive it, perhaps you should try having some sense of it instead of the embittered spiteful approach.

The limited company thing wasn’t meant to be a qualification beater, just to let you know your idiotic reasoning (which btw STILL fails to come to any conclusion) won’t wash with those of us who do have to contend with all manner of tedious nitpicking mundanity in running our own businesses. You are evidently not familiar with business of any sort because your naivete is staggering when you touch upon basic trading principles. By intimidating I only meant to you, when you find out you couldn’t come onto a worldwide blog expecting not to be challenged by minds bigger than both of ours. You ignored that and jumped into your infantile back pedalling regardless. So we’ve both had a tremendous amount of fun. You with your deflecting finger poking, me with the head-shaking laugh derived from watching schoolboy errors played out.

It dawns on me that it is exactly this sort of exchange of pointless diatribes you feed on and which has ensured your infamy follows you from your last blog. And finally, I apologise to fellow blogsters for being stupid enough to be drawn into your comfort zone of pointless bitter naysaying. Should have known better.

  • 206 Transfer Sage // Jan 10, 2016 at 9:18 PM

Short term I think we could be worse off if Ashley sold unless it was to a very very wealthy person willing to plow a lot of money into the club, even just to keep the assets Ashley would potentially sell.

Last time Ashley didn’t sell as that team was very strong and was more than likely to come back up, lots of experienced pros who had quality and liked to battle.

This time we don’t have that and the quality in the championship has improved a lot. Look at how teams like Boro regularly beat top flight opposition in cups, playing good football.

Until we see a new owner we won’t know if the change is bad or good, luck of the draw who stumps up the cash really.

For me though I’d take that gamble now as I’m sick of Ashley and constant relegation battles, winning 6/7 games a year is no fun.

  • 207 JamesToon // Jan 10, 2016 at 9:19 PM

  • 209 Transfer Sage // Jan 10, 2016 at 9:20 PM

We went out and bought quality in those days, much different to now. Signing Shearer was the equivalent of us going out and buying suarez from liverpool these days.

Not saying everything was perfect but the club back then really tried to win things and capitalise on a strong period in our history, unfortunately after Keegan we made a bad appointment, although in fairness on paper it could have worked out the total opposite.

Watford v Newcastle: Elliot, Janmaat, Coloccini, Mbemba, Dummett, Mbabu, Sissoko, Tiote, Wijnaldum, Mitrovic, Perez

Subs: Darlow, Lascelles, Sterry, Thauvin, Toney, Gouffran, De Jong

It looks like there will be no other players available to start against ManU on Tuesday and the formation apparently was reasonably successful. I am not sure if Sissoko was supposed to tuck in a little more, which would have allowed Janmaat to get forward with better opportunities and given less defensive responsibility to Gini. But if these issues can be ironed out I think the players can give another good account of themselves.

I would perhaps try Thauvin instead of Mitro as he is really starting to snatch at chances and would be better coming on later in the game. Two home matches where there is the potential for something to click into place and get a two victories, to also boost the prospect of incoming transfers.

    Where is Andre Carrillo??!!

    Tsunki @ 192
You assume you’ve won the argument and that your view is the right view. You’re bound to think that about your own view. But being a helper in an office doesn’t win the day. Neither does insulting anyone time after time. You have no idea of my credentials or qualifications, and I would not dream to speak of them in order to win out in a debate. Only cogent arguments win out in a debate.

I really don’t know what your problem is? You’ve put your view. I’ve put mine, Ashley’s solicitor, Chris Mort’s, Brewin Dolphin’s analyst, Venay Bedi’s, and also the Swiss Ramblers assessment of the financial position. The whole world can see both sides. You don’t need to jump up and down quoting your credentials and telling the world how intimidating they are.

It is my view that you show a complete lack of understanding of financial matters. I look back at the debate and believe my cogent arguments win the day hands down. But that is only my view. Because Old Blackley states he’s won out, it doesn’t mean he has. My declaring myself the winner, as you have done, is not going to influence anyone to agree with me. Only cogent arguments will do that. Certainly, hissy fits help nobody’s credibility. I was implicitly inviting minds bigger than ours to give their view. I’ve no fear of someone making a better argument. I welcome it. I know what a good argument looks like when I see one, fella. I’d still challenge you to make a cogent one in a respectful way.

we have been available for sale on a number of occasions but we never once came close to changing ownership.

We are carrying £100+ Million debt, we have a squad that needs complete rebuilding and unlike the top five clubs in the Prem we simply do not have the global brand add the price for the club on top of all that and you come to the reason we still in Ashley’s hands.

Austin has played 16 out of 25 league games this year scoring 10 goals.

I imagine if he played say 20 games this season for us he would be worth 7-10 goals which could be vital.

Then again, with our injury record the lad might never make it off the physio table.

  • 258 Transfer Sage // Jan 10, 2016 at 9:58 PM

Those would be very useful signings in my opinion, from the limited amount I’ve seen of Saivet anyway.

If we could add a goal scorer, say remy on loan and a CB we’d look so much stronger.

I’m not sold on Saivet mate but Shelvey on form could add some creativity to the midfield.
I agree Remy could be the difference on staying up or going down. If we did indeed bid for Lacazette as he says we did then hopefully there is little signs of optimism, But I just don’t see any as yet pal.
I think this will be a massive benchmark on what the hierarchy’s aims are for the club this transfer window. Because no incomings and I think we will go down

  • 264 AncientC // Jan 10, 2016 at 10:08 PM

jazzyp – Remy didn’t refuse to play, he didn’t want to play the last game of the season because he wanted to be fit for international football, and Pardew agreed with his point of view. This is Remy’s side of the story…

Pardew maintains Remy was not fit; therefore unavailable for selection.

I cannot see any reason for Loic Remy to invent his side of the story.

He may well have got 7 goals IF he played that many games for us. Doesn’t necessarily mean we would have won points though.

Spurs would be 2 pts better off this season if you take away all of Harry Kane goals. Thought that was an interesting fact.

Apparently we bid 18m for Berahino in the summer and that offer is still on the table which is what’s being reported.

  • 291 Tsunki // Jan 10, 2016 at 10:48 PM

It seems there’s a last ditch attempt by the desperate Ashley rationalisers to convince everyone that if Ashley hasn’t steered us to success it’s only because we have set our idea of success too high. In other words we don’t deserve much better than where we are. Deplorable characters like Keegan had the temerity to suggest we could aspire to heights we do not deserve. Oh yes, and of course his win percentage against some of the best premier league teams to ever turn out, were paltry compared to Hughton whose over-qualified team had the misfortune to have to contend with championship might.

The apologist nonsense keeps coming in wave after wave of claptrap, like a war of attrition.

    TS and Springy

It’s a strange one with Austin, Jimmy dropped him for 3 of his first 4 games, sometimes playing without a striker.

Bournemouth went and spent 10m on Benik Afobe and Palace spent 7 or 8m on the former mackem. Apparently tly now valued at 7.5m it still seems as though no one wants Austin.

It’ll be interesting to see what this week brings in terms of transfers but one thing which is guaranteed is that the players will be rewarded with a nice break in Dubai or Abu Dhabi come the 4th round of the FA Cup!!

If the Tellytubbies had any sense, they’d be asking McClaren who he wanted.

At least doing that, the clowns’d at least might stand a chance of getting players who’s just slit straight into McClaren’s way of playing.

As it’s been, they’ve bought players on Carr’s recommendations and they’ve needed to adjust to McClaren’s game rather than drop straight in.

But, we’re dealing with an owner, Charnley and Carr – a fatal combination on arrogance to go with their ignorance.

Steven Nzonzi is the player we should have enquired earlier.

With our team playing such football, we shouldn’t be in such a position.

We need players like him that can Defend (Challenge for high ball, hold up ball strongly and pass on and strong in tackle in midfield) and get forward and even shoot from range.

His presence is such that will relieve alot of pressure and motivate his mates playing around him with more confidence.

Too bad Carr just don’t see that we need such a player in the team.

Premier League is Physical and we really need someone with some physical abilities to help us.

That’s why old cheick tiote needs to play, he is the Natural DM. StevenN is an upgrade that add heights to our game

Both Anita and Colback will never do the job as well as Nzonzi. Alth they does give something different to the game but that not what the current team needed. (we are not Baca)

    No thanks.

I used to really love him, when he first came into the England U21s he was brilliant. He’s a genuine poacher in front of goal. He is absolutely NOT a winger or midfielder in any way. The fact that Pulis plays him as a defensive winger to track back a lot is just madness. It’s like playing Insaghi or Raul or Falcao as a winger- it is not their game. Their game is inside the penalty area where they manage to nick goals when others may not have movement as good to get onto the ball.

However, since those U21 days, when he seemed a total professional and quite humble player, he seems to have turned into a royal pr!ck. I think he believed his own hype far too quickly. For 10m I’d still have him but 20+ no way.
