According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle may be ready to launch a club record bid to nab West Brom striker Saido Berahino, who wants to leave West Brom in January.
And since there is bad feeling between West Brom and Spurs because of the antics of Spurs trying to prise the young striker away from the Baggies in the summer – it could be an opportunity for Newcastle to move in and seal the deal.
West Brom striker Saido Berahino
The Mail is reporting Newcastle are readying the bid, but apparently there was an £18M record bid made by Newcastle in the summer – and that bid is still valid according to reports today.
Newcastle record signing is still the £17M we paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen in August of 2005, followed by the £15M we paid Blackburn Rovers for Alan Shearer in the summer of 1996.
And last summer the £14.5M signing of Georginio Wijnaldum from Dutch club PSV was the third highest, but this deal would be the most expensive ever for Newcastle.
Saido has had some problems at West Brom since the Spurs overtures last summer, but he would be an excellent acquisition for us.
The big challenge for Newcastle will be to persuade him to join us when we are in danger of being relegated in May.
What do you think?

No idea why people haven’t come in for him. In the summer he wasn’t value for money at 15mil.
He was more important to QPR getting promoted than he was to other clubs in the premier league who can attract other players.
I think that inflated his value as QPR knew if they had any chance to get their hands on 100mil of TV money they had to keep Austin.

If he struggles to get into games either loan him back out or keep him here for next season if we go down.

Comment #291It seems there’s a last ditch attempt by the desperate Ashley rationalisers to convince everyone that if Ashley hasn’t steered us to success it’s only because we have set our idea of success too high. In other words we don’t deserve much better than where we are. Deplorable characters like Keegan had the temerity to suggest we could aspire to heights we do not deserve. Oh yes, and of course his win percentage against some of the best premier league teams to ever turn out, were paltry compared to Hughton whose over-qualified team had the misfortune to have to contend with championship might.
The apologist nonsense keeps coming in wave after wave of claptrap, like a war of attrition.

It’s a strange one with Austin, Jimmy dropped him for 3 of his first 4 games, sometimes playing without a striker.
Bournemouth went and spent 10m on Benik Afobe and Palace spent 7 or 8m on the former mackem. Apparently tly now valued at 7.5m it still seems as though no one wants Austin.
It’ll be interesting to see what this week brings in terms of transfers but one thing which is guaranteed is that the players will be rewarded with a nice break in Dubai or Abu Dhabi come the 4th round of the FA Cup!!

You still debating that person…..howay man. He absolves Ashley of any blame, rants about Charnley, Carr and Colo but doesn’t stop to think that Ashley wants them where they are so they can take the blame away from him.
It wasn’t long ago Ashley and Colo were having a meal together to persuade Mr Curly to stay and no go back home.
Remember before going to sleep every night, make a prayer for our illustrious owner for whom without we’d have done a Leeds or Blackburn…..or even worse a Portsmouth!!

Mike Ashley long…term plan (top 4) Vs Peter Lim 2-3 years plan (challenging top teams)
So far, Mike Ashley have employed alot of manager/caretaker/boardroom staff to this club but most of which are not that popular/ decent and not much credential.. not the WOW Factor player/ manager that Mike Ashley promise to deliver.

Comment #298Jesus! Get Shelvey, get a decent left back, get the centre forward, either Remy on loan, or Austin, or similar and stop dicking around with this horrendous false economy of trawling threw pebbles trying to unearth a gem and the miserable pretence that goes along with it.
We have the makings of a very good side, and the fans are on to you Mike, they really are. It won’t hold water anymore fella. Find a way to get the two or three we need now, then in the summer get the final two or three to finish the job .
Do the right thing, do it now, or just eff off.

I had read he was really peed off that Qpr priced him out of a move in the summer.

Comment #301If the Tellytubbies had any sense, they’d be asking McClaren who he wanted.
At least doing that, the clowns’d at least might stand a chance of getting players who’s just slit straight into McClaren’s way of playing.
As it’s been, they’ve bought players on Carr’s recommendations and they’ve needed to adjust to McClaren’s game rather than drop straight in.
But, we’re dealing with an owner, Charnley and Carr – a fatal combination on arrogance to go with their ignorance.

Haha. You bring some light relief from Tsunki, who’s been uncharacteristically apoplectic lately. We need to get the old Tsunki back.
Could you please apply your mind to giving Tsunki a little pep talk. The fella’s been trying desperately to rehabilitate his reputation after he unintentionally brought great mirth and merriment to the blog the other day.
I fear he hasn’t slept a wink. So I have attempted to console with the thought that people quickly forget on the blog and his reputation will be restored soon enough, more so if he keeps his head down.
I must however counsel that his long series of posts bashing old Blackley for all his worth is counter productive as he is only drawing more attention to himself. He needs to employ a more subtle approach, I would suggest.

The buck stops with Ashley for the rubbish served up on the pitch. He’s the man at the top. In his words, “my door”.
As you know, although it doesn’t stop you from saying otherwise, you won’t catch old Blackley absolving Ashley of any blame for the rubbish served up on the pitch. But why let the truth get in the way of a good put down, eh OurToon? It was exactly the same with the “due diligence”, although to be fair to you, you just don’t understand that point and really believe what you’re saying.

Comment #315Steven Nzonzi is the player we should have enquired earlier.
With our team playing such football, we shouldn’t be in such a position.
We need players like him that can Defend (Challenge for high ball, hold up ball strongly and pass on and strong in tackle in midfield) and get forward and even shoot from range.
His presence is such that will relieve alot of pressure and motivate his mates playing around him with more confidence.
Too bad Carr just don’t see that we need such a player in the team.
Premier League is Physical and we really need someone with some physical abilities to help us.
That’s why old cheick tiote needs to play, he is the Natural DM. StevenN is an upgrade that add heights to our game
Both Anita and Colback will never do the job as well as Nzonzi. Alth they does give something different to the game but that not what the current team needed. (we are not Baca)

I used to really love him, when he first came into the England U21s he was brilliant. He’s a genuine poacher in front of goal. He is absolutely NOT a winger or midfielder in any way. The fact that Pulis plays him as a defensive winger to track back a lot is just madness. It’s like playing Insaghi or Raul or Falcao as a winger- it is not their game. Their game is inside the penalty area where they manage to nick goals when others may not have movement as good to get onto the ball.
However, since those U21 days, when he seemed a total professional and quite humble player, he seems to have turned into a royal pr!ck. I think he believed his own hype far too quickly. For 10m I’d still have him but 20+ no way.

Inevitable though things are never straightforward on Barrack Road and financing the pursuit of Shelvey in addition to an unidentified striking target in this window are at least partly dependent on concluding the sale of a current high earner at the club.
