Saivet Deal Agreed – McClaren Comments – Bordeaux Confirm Deal

3:50 pm, Monday, January 11th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 89 Comments

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren today mentioned Henri Saivet is at Newcastle to have a medical prior to him hopefully signing on at Newcastle on a five year deal – but Steve would go no further than that.

Bordeaux manager Willy Sagnol also confirmed during his press conference that a deal had been agreed between the two clubs.

The news broke earlier today in L’Equipe that a deal had been agreed between the clubs and personal terms with the player had also been agreed.

Henri Saivet – undergoing medical at Newcastle

Bordeaux manager Willy Sagnol said a deal had been agreed with Newcastle for Saivet and  Ligue 1 club tweeted confirmation.

W. #Sagnol press conference : “NUFC and Girondins have agreed on the transfer of Saivet_Henri.”

At his press conference for the game against Manchester United at home tomorrow night Steve McClaren had this to say:

“I think everybody would say in January we need to strengthen and we’d like to strengthen. We will have to wait and see.”

“We are doing our business quietly and privately. With this one with Henri we will wait until it’s done before we comment.”

“We are at a sensitive stage where we are going through a medical and negotiating a contract.” “I’ve seen these deals fall through and everybody has egg on their face.”

“People can get left upset but all I can say is he’s in the building.” “When it’s all done and signed we will talk about his assets and what he will bring to the team.”

Let’s hope this one goes through – and quickly.

Comments welcome.

hope he’s given a fair chance…..keep them coming!

  • 2 seasons // Jan 11, 2016 at 3:58 PM

springy it wont happen. if he doesnt hit the ground running the fans will be on his back and he’ll be yet another french flop. takes a season at least in the prem and our fans aint got that kind of patience.

  • 3 Goromagpie // Jan 11, 2016 at 3:58 PM

    Team for MANU match
    janmaat mbmba collo mbabu
    sissoko wini thauvin
    dejong Mitrovic

We’re also linked with Burnley’s Andre Gray who has 15 goals and 5 assists in 22 appearances this season, however it would be an initial loan then a £12million deal in the summer.

Would love Gray, very pacey striker, proven to a certain level, i think with his form and with his pace and physicality he would flourish in the premier league. Would probably prefer him than spending £18m on berahino.

Saivet is now in, no idea really what type of player he is, had a look on FM and they reckon he’s fairly fast and is more of an attacking midfielder rather than defensive. As long as we get Shelvey i’m happy, as no doubt Saivet will take time to settle in if he’s any good, just keeping my fingers crossed that he’ll be one of carr’s rare “gems”.

  • 5 JamesToon // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:00 PM

Obviously with Gray there are the FIFA rules where you can’t play for more than 2 clubs in a season (i think??) so the loan would get by the rule then we buy him in the summer. However I’m not sure burnley will want to sell considering he’s their top scorer

  • 6 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:03 PM

he’s apparently one of the best 2 cm in ligue 1 in the first half of the season and his manager says he has been the most important player for bordeaux in the last 6mth…so needs a chance but also needs hit the ground running like you say

  • 7 JamesToon // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:03 PM

From what i hear about saivet, he’s a creative midfielder which is really what we need, but not gonna judge him till he actually plays, just hope he’s not another french flop

  • 8 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:04 PM

i think colback injured mate….not certain mind but thats what i believe

  • 9 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:08 PM

Really hoping that Tiote stays mind or a senseless/very risky deal ?

  • 10 hibbitt // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:09 PM

seasons we haven’t got a season unless we bought him for the championship

  • 11 Spoof // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:10 PM

creating chance after chance and we sign another creator for Mitro and Perez to squander

  • 12 Goromagpie // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:11 PM

I think he will fit enough to play tomorrow

  • 13 toonking // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:12 PM

well well we make a transfer in attempt to get ourselves out this relegation battle and wouldn’ you know it we get a player from our favourite french league.

    champonship here we come.

  • 14 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:13 PM

ya never know lads saivet may come in and have the same sort of influence and performances that kante has had for leicester…give it a chance

  • 15 thewardski // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:15 PM

“He has an above average technique, is powerful with great vision and acceleration skills. He also has good dribbling and passing skills, and as I said before is a great tackler. However, he can be quite inconsistent against defensive teams, but I wouldnt worry too much in the Premier league about that 🙂 Best position in my opinion, box-to-box. He started as a striker, and then a winger until last august when Sagnol moved him in the central midfield of our team.” (Local fan on youtube today)?

  • 16 ronaldo aarons // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:16 PM

Judging by the reactions it’s fair to say that nobody can confidently say this is a good signing. Some people have said he’s a striker, a winger or even an attacking mid. I’ve only seen him play in previous years on the wing or up front. This year however, his better performances reportedly have been using his energy and power to break up play and win the ball. I haven’t seen this so can’t comment but if he is coming in with shelvey then I can see that being our new midfield partnership which I think could mesh really well.

  • 17 ronaldo aarons // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:17 PM

Meant to say that nobody can confidently say this is a good or bad signing.

  • 18 Goromagpie // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:18 PM

    My prediction for tomorrows game
    Mitrovic sissoko

  • 19 banjax // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:20 PM

If we sign Shelvey and Saivet why would we need Tiote ? Anyway Tiote is starting to show his age after long periods of injury have taken their toll and it seems he fancies a £3m move to an Arab league anyway. What we should be more concerned about is scant mention of recruiting any defenders – they are a priority.

  • 20 Spoof // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:20 PM

ra, the only part of the team which seems to be working is the midfield, why strebngthen the strenthnwhen the weakness will take us down

  • 21 lochinvar // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:21 PM

Is Saviet a replacement for someone who will be allowed to leave such as Tiote , De Jong ( depending on his health and fitness and playing time – I would hope he stays , just needs time ) or someone else ?
    Any ideas ?

  • 22 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:21 PM

We should get a result tomorrow. Man Utd are one of the worst teams in the league. They should be in the bottom 5 going by their performances and players.

  • 23 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:22 PM

there was story this morning that tiote wants a move to china….so maybe thats why they’ve brought him in and after shelvey

  • 24 Belfast // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:23 PM

I would say Tiote is probably offski. Somebody high on the pay scale will be leaving anyway. I’d rather get rid of Goufrann and Marveaux myself.

  • 25 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:23 PM

theres ketsbaia putting the hoodoo on us!!lol

  • 26 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:25 PM

i did read that a big earner at newcastle would have to leave for us to start making signings…maybe tiote is that player

  • 27 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:25 PM

Fantastic stuff from nufc here, they’ve acted swiftly and thoroughly

We desperately need goals and discipline so they rushed out and bought this CF, well he was a CF, but he didn’t score many goals, so he become a winger, but he struggled there so he became a holding midfielder, which is great, because we’re lacking there…..

Well done Lee, you’ve signed the new Alan Smith, seriously he even plays as many games as Smithy!

    Canny stuff

  • 28 JamesToon // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:27 PM

Why would we need tiote? he’s the only one who’s physically dominant and decent at breaking up attacks, colback and anita too lightweight

does anyone actually know what kind of player saivet is? what he’s good at? I heard he’s played in positions such as DM, CM, winger and striker?? Sounds like another gouffran..

  • 29 ronaldo aarons // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:28 PM

I see what you’re saying but our midfield isn’t exactly a strength and hasn’t been for some time. As a team we need strengthening all over the pitch. The club decided to add to the midfield because currently we have tiote, Anita and colback. With rumours of tiote leaving they have went for these two. I would like a clinical striker brought in after shelvey.

  • 30 JamesToon // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:28 PM

Would you be happy with shelvey signing for us?

  • 31 kimbo // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:28 PM

Mmmmm, another winger from the French league, why does Mash not sell us and buy a team in France.

This is not what we need unless a player is going the other way.

  • 32 JAMSHA // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:29 PM

well im not gona be exicted with this signg wen we should be getn PL exp Players, its no time for players to get settled now

  • 33 Belfast // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:30 PM

Well apparently we wanted Afobe Tads, but we didn’t no Bournemouth were signing him, even though it was widely reported on Friday night.

  • 34 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:31 PM

there a few write ups on news now..and chronicle have a page about him…if anyone whats a look

  • 35 Goromagpie // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:34 PM

Rumors that we are in for jordon ayew..

  • 36 JamesToon // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:35 PM

Telegraph saying we’ve turned our attentions to Andre Gray after Benik Afobe going to bournemouth

  • 37 Small World // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:36 PM

Worst case scenario. Steve Mc has got sick of wijnaldum cutting in when asked to play out wide so will trade him for this guy!!!! Don’t think that even we’re that stupid..

I’d like to think Marvraux of the list for him. In which case will save some lovely lolly, and Penfold will be happy

  • 38 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:39 PM

Ayew has been Villa’s best player since Summer his goal against us was a worldy.

  • 39 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:41 PM

has scored many other goals in this league?

  • 40 martoon // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:41 PM

It will be interesting to see what squad number he is given as I believe we have a full compliment so someone will have to be deregistered!

  • 41 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:41 PM

    5 this term

  • 42 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:42 PM

Not sure about Shelvey. We need a Marveaux/Ben Arfa type player. The player we should’ve signed was Shaqiri.

I think if we signed Saviet, Raphael Guerriero, Koulibaly, Shelvey and Loic Remy, we may finish mid-table.

  • 43 BandB // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:43 PM

Bigiramana, Vuckic and Goode were all given a number.

  • 44 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:43 PM

    Small World
In that case maybe SMC should play Wijnaldum in his actual position? You know where he played him vs Arsenal and he was brilliant?
    Just a thought like

  • 45 BandB // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:44 PM

    So was Marveaux.

  • 46 GiniGiniGini // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:44 PM

Have to play Perez over De Jong

  • 47 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:44 PM

    He’s Swansea’s Andre Ayew’s kid bro

  • 48 kakaobi // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:44 PM

Good news at last now we just need one more midfielder another defensive one if possible then I think we’ll be ok haha ffs

  • 49 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:44 PM

Afobe….Grey…’s like we’re readying ourselves for fizzy pop life

  • 50 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:45 PM

    I’d get rid of:

Gouffran (he should’ve been played as a striker)
    De Jong? (Another Kevin Nolan)
    Jack Colback (awful player)
Dummett (not a left back, doesn’t get forward enough and put crosses in. Santon shouldn’t have been sold).

  • 51 Belfast // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:46 PM

Yes I’d read that James. He would be a
good signing. Sounds like a complicated deal though and Burnley will be kissing their promotion hopes goodbye.

  • 52 hibbitt // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:46 PM

kets do you rate saviet whats best position ive never heard of him till last week

  • 53 Belfast // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:48 PM

I quite like them two Tads. Rather that than the usual French raid anyway.

  • 54 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:49 PM

He’s a bit like Hoilett. He’s a winger. We keep playing players out of position. Gouffran was a striker and we played him on the wing or in dm.

Saviet isn’t as good as Marveaux but if he replaces Colback, then it’s an ok deal.

We need a playmaker with a brain. Shaqiri would’ve been ideal.

  • 55 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:50 PM

We have a Marveux type player…….Marveux

  • 56 reilly // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:50 PM

‘He’s been told he’ll be used at the heart of the Toon midfield and encouraged to be creative as McClaren tries to turn round a miserable first half of the season which has left the club in the Premier League relegation zone and now out of the FA Cup’.

  • 57 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:52 PM

Personally would go for Remy on loan, need goals badly

That or take a punt on Ings on loan, he’d jump at the chance to leave the bin dippers ah reckon

  • 58 hibbitt // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:53 PM

kets …….that good…… so could be another french flop why do we keep doing it

  • 59 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:57 PM

I suspect Anita’s hammy problem may be worse than they are saying.

  • 60 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:57 PM

goofy never got a run of games as cf and has been off the boil now a good season or 2
taylor…yes but need a cb to come in…if not squad player
fergie..yes but thought he was decent for a spell
bigi…yes for his own good….showed promise at the start but disappeared
SDJ….needs games but if the not going to play him loan him out see if he can regain his form
    colback…no squad grafter
dummett…no for me done ok steady away player…not great but steady.. squad
santon was poor at defending could never get away with right footed left back always looked unbalanced…fairly young so had promise but i always thought he’d of been better at right back or rm my sell

  • 61 hibbitt // Jan 11, 2016 at 4:59 PM

tads…………. think ings made a big mistake joining liverpool but i read yesterday that klopp was ready to give him his chance

  • 62 cyprus // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:00 PM

    My favourite:

    Life on Mars.

  • 63 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:00 PM

Santon’s preferred position is right back.

  • 64 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:01 PM

saivet has been playing cm and has been one of the two best cm in france with tiago motta(if i read right) for first half of the season

  • 65 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:02 PM

    He’s Senegalese. He’s pacy.

We also need to get rid of Obertan. We can get £3m for him. Obertan has pace and skill but no brain.

  • 66 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:03 PM

    thats according to the way

  • 67 tequilamag // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:05 PM

  • 68 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:06 PM

its actually persuading some team to take these players….most are near the end of the there contracts so wait till the end of the window see if there any offers if not come to some arrangement and pay them off and clear the decks if 6mth or a year left

  • 69 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:06 PM

    will never happen like!

  • 70 firebug666 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:07 PM

Saivet has to be given a chance, any new player does. If he is coming in to be a CM playmaker, who can also break up their play then that’s not so bad, The lad likes a tackle and is a ball winner.

  • 71 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:08 PM

I’d give Riviere and Marveaux a chance. SDJ can stay until the end of the season. Looks too slow for this league. Anita is decent and can stay. Tiote can go if we get a replacement in.

  • 72 WWSBRD // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:09 PM

i know next to nothing about him other than his stats which don’t look too inspiring

  • 73 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:10 PM

been described as a powerhouse midfielder…ano just a tag…been surprised at the negativity….ano he’s no super star but give him chance

  • 74 WWSBRD // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:12 PM

U must be keen on the championship then bud

  • 75 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:14 PM

rivierre and marveaux……need a chance but they have to take as they will not get many chances..if any!….SDJ i think he is a very smart player, vocal and organised but does lack pace….but he needs games and like them previously needs to do better

  • 76 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:14 PM

Jay Rodriguez would be a good signing. Fast player.

  • 77 hibbitt // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:15 PM

springy….. the problem is we haven’t got time or games we any new plays we buy needs to hit the ground running just look at the table

  • 78 croftus5678 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:16 PM

    @73 springy

    i hope so too !

think he’s an upgrade on anita/colback as a dm but he’s more a complete cm where he adds going forwards also.

i have my doubts if he’s bought for the wing mind as i dont see the qualities personally but i hope i’m wrong if it is the case.

a mid 3 of shelvey/sissoko and wijnaldum with saivet as backup is very mouthwatering though but that depends on if macca plays with a dm or 2 >.<

  • 79 WWSBRD // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:18 PM

Marv and Rivi need a chance alright a chance to get back to France not good enough for Newcastle imo

  • 80 croftus5678 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:19 PM

    my team would be.

as it stands atm and yes river as no one else can tap in those easy goals atm >.< even river could score these chances.

  • 81 Bobbybee // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:19 PM

I think we need to give this lad a chance before writing him off. Not many of us know how good he is, but he seems to be given a good report since moving to CM from the wing. He’ll likely replace Anita or Colback, whilst still being capable of getting forward and scoring or assisting. Seems to take a decent free kick from the vids I’ve seen as well. As for Shelvey, I think he’s a player with something to prove to Swansea and we’ve suffered enough at his hands to know how good he can be. Proven English player who wants his place back in the England squad. Berahino has shown he can score in the PL, but clearly isn’t match fit. Is he the answer? Difficult one. Austin is injured and we don’t know how long he’s out for. Arma would take those chances we keep missing without question, but is it fair to pile all our survival hopes on an 18 year old kid? Probably not. We need a proven
goalscorer regardless of who it is or how much they cost. I believe Mitro will come good, but we haven’t got time to wait.

  • 82 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:21 PM

ano mate but some havin ago before he’s kicked a ball is not ganna help…he may be shite but could come in and do what kante or payet has done earlier this season and that would be enough to get us clear hopefully
….not saying your one of them by the way just seems theres a general downer on the lad

  • 83 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:22 PM

Saviet is not a defensive midielder. He’s mainly a winger.

  • 84 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:24 PM

    Martoon he was pure class

  • 85 firebug666 // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:24 PM

100% give him a chance, I hope to god he doesn’t bother reading these blogs and twitter before signing on the dotted line, he would be back in France without bothering to repack his stuff.

The lad has played at SJP in 2012 when we beat Bordeaux 3-0 to go top of the table.

  • 86 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:25 PM

they probs are’nt good enough but have’nt seen much of marveaux and rivi’s has only been a season

  • 87 JamesChick // Jan 11, 2016 at 5:32 PM

Can’t help but think if we are signing this guy and Shelvey that the club are lining up a Sissoko sale. Saivet can play on the wing so it wouldn’t surprise me if we are without Sissoko come the start of February.

  • 88 Moonraker15 // Jan 11, 2016 at 6:23 PM

Sissoko going nowhere atm. The board are shit scared of relegation it’s now obvious the pressure is on and he’s an essential part of survival.
