5 Pictures And 10 Facts On New Signing Henri Saivet

8:50 pm, Monday, January 11th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 148 Comments

Here are some photos that have been published in the Chronicle today and some facts that have been issued on the Newcastle web-site about our new signing Henri Saivet – formerly of Bordeaux.

Newcastle have also issued this information on Henri Saivet’s career so far – on their web-site:

  1. Saivet was born in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, on 26th October, 1990.
  2. He joined the Academy at Bordeaux at the age of 11 and quickly rose through the ranks at the French club.
  3. Saivet became the youngest professional in Bordeaux’s history when he signed his first professional deal in 2007.
  4. On the final day of the 2007/08 campaign he made his first team debut, stepping off the substitutes’ bench for the final 12 minutes of Bordeaux’s 2-2 draw at Lens.
  5. Saivet had to be patient for game time in the seasons that followed, making a handful of appearances, but enjoyed a successful loan spell at Ligue 2 side Angers in the second half of the 2010/11 season.
  6. Returning to Bordeaux, he began to make an impact on the first team squad and was a key part of their Coupe de France triumph in 2013.
  7. Saivet went on to become a key player for Bordeaux and made a total of 178 appearances in all competitions, scoring 23 goals.
  8. Originally a forward or winger, Saivet was converted into a holding central midfielder in recent years and flourished, taking on the captain’s armband at Bordeaux.
  9. Saivet represented France at under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-21 level, but switched allegiances to his homeland in 2013, and has won nine senior caps for Senegal to date.
  10. Saivet made a great start to his Newcastle career by scoring a brace in each of his first three games for his new club – all wins

Comments welcome.

Oh yes – sorry – almost forgot – I made up that last fact – it’s currently fiction – but you never know.

So then of the names realistically linked I can see this being a strong team and my personal choice would be
    Elliot
    —–mbemba—collo—-koudibally
    Jaan–sissoko–shelvey—saivet—-willems
    ——————-gini—————
    ——————-berahino————–

Perez, mitro, de Jong, thauvin on bench very nice. Bring in byram in summer along with Ben yedder, tieleman, veltman I’ll be a happy boy and could maybe dare to dream we will finish above 15th next yeat

    SWANS LISTENING TO SHELVEY OFFERS

Swansea interim boss Alan Curtis has said the club are willing to listen to offers for Jonjo Shelvey.

The midfielder, 23, has been linked with a move away in January, with Newcastle reportedly interested.

“I don’t think there have been any firm offers yet. If a firm offer comes in then it’s probably something the club would have to consider,” Curtis said.

Looks like there selling Shelvey boys

  • 14 Toonces // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:05 PM

I’m not so certain that the opportunity was ever really there to try to bring Cabaye back to Tyneside. I really enjoyed him in the Black and White but he likely wanted to leave NUFC for all the suspected reasons: no ambition by the club, chance to play champs league, incompetence in the club hierarchy (JFK really?), rumoured wage cap due to colo somehow being designated as always the highest paid player and so on. Nothing in the time since he left would have changed this opinion about our club. So maybe he was available from PSG for 10M or 13M whatever. It was always suggested that Pardew was a manager that the players liked to play for, tactics and such aside, and it would seem Cabaye rated him and knew Pardew would support him no matter what. And maybe Palace is giving him 100K per week. BUT what would make you think he would want to return to Newcastle under this regime?

Mike Dean is an enigma – check out Wikypedia.
His loyalties are deemed to lie with Liverpool as he’s from the Wirral.
    But then again….
There was debate over a decision Dean made in a Premier League fixture between Newcastle United and Chelsea in December 2011. In the fourth minute of the match, he adjudged Chelsea centre-back David Luiz to have fouled Newcastle’s Demba Ba when the striker was through on goal. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew later said he “expected” Luiz to be sent off for committing a professional foul, but “couldn’t fathom” why Dean opted to show Luiz only a yellow card.[Pardew said that Dean had subsequently admitted to him that the failure to send-off Luiz was “a mistake”. Chelsea went on to win the game 3-0.
    Tomorrow night could be interesting.

  • 44 firebug666 // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:53 PM

Newcastle United have signed Crystal Palace midfielder Will Hoare on trial.

The 18-year-old pulled on a Newcastle shirt and made his debut for Peter Beardsley’s reserves at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium tonight after replacing Sean Longstaff in the 62nd minute against Aston Villa.

Palace handed Hoare a professional contract earlier this year, but Newcastle have opted to take a look at the teenager in their Under-21 side.

Hoare was born in Croydon but has represented Scotland at Under-16 level.

He is right-footed and renowned for being a hard working midfield player. Hoare played his part for the young Magpies during a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa.

After working his way up at Palace since the age of eight Hoare was handed a new contract last year. He said: “Over those 10 years you work up to getting your first professional contract. For all the boys that got one it was a great feeling.

“Getting it was a good moment but it isn’t about the first one it’s the second, third or fourth.”

Newcastle are looking to strengthen their Under-21 ranks over the next two or three windows as they look to provide Steve McClaren with more back-up.

  • 45 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:55 PM

  • 46 SUTTY1978 // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:56 PM

So which other Mondial players do you think we might be after?
Also another strange one was that we were interested in signing Berahino last summer right up until he changed agents, why on earth would who is agent is matter, you either want the player or you dont, that is unless you’re getting a nice little payback out of the deal

  • 47 firebug666 // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:57 PM

Loch, i was at that game sat behind the goal with another toon fan and a chelsea fan, all three of us thought he was off, it was the only decision that could be made. The decision was madness. That was the game that ended our unbeaten run that season.

Talking of SD logo’s the Saviet pictures are clearly framed to get in as much of the SD logo’s as possible. Even the one with the stand in the background basically only shows “Sports Direct”

Spingy, the fella is nearly retired he does need to get a little nest egg together, good old uncle Mikey doesn’t mind as he’s taking a little cut of his own.
Did you notice how our payments to agents were unusually high the last couple of years, I wonder why?!

  • 52 firebug666 // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:06 PM

Yep, I noticed. It is a worrying thought about only using one agent for most of our signings though as that would limit our options immensely.

You would have to suspect that this is more than mere coincidence, maybe they are another of the preferred partners.

Douglas Costa. …not a chance but there’s a couple of others on their books who might be possibles.

  • 55 Thump // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:18 PM

    From The Shields Gazette

“There’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes and a lot of discussions,” said head coach McClaren, who is on the club’s board.

“None of those are frustrated, angry. It’s kind of a process that we have got to go through, and we are going through.

“Let’s see over the next two or three weeks what happens.”

McClaren, focused on ending his team’s four-game league and cup losing streak, must now wait and see if managing director Lee Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr can deliver the signings he needs.

“It’s January and everybody knows it’s a difficult month,” said the 54-year-old.

“Every club, whether you are top or bottom, is looking all the time and if there’s an opportunity, it will be done. I suppose we are like everybody else.”

McClaren has been unwilling to discuss the areas that he feels need strengthening, though his broader comments have pointed to the need for a striker.

Asked if a goalscorer was at the top of his wishlist, McClaren said: “There are quite a few things.

“But as I say, we are talking about it, keeping our counsel, trying to do things quietly because you just feel that you see it with a lot of theatre going on, a lot of talk and a lot of clubs issuing what they are doing.

“From my past experience, that (talking publicly) can actually upset something, so we are quietly doing our business behind (closed doors).”

McClaren added: “There’s not much we can say and discuss about it.

“But you know and I know, and it’s not rocket science to know that we assess the first half (of the season) and what do we need in the second half.”

Well Saviet will need to hit the ground running. Obviously replacement for Tiote & £3M net in Cashley’s skyrocket plus £6M profit on Tiote purchase. Typical Toon business! Perhaps S Mc plan is to flood the midfield with players but at £12M Shelvey is just too expensive. I really hope MA is going to put up enough money to bring in a free scoring striker, proven CB & a left back who can defend and cross a ball. Really hope it’s just not going to be loan players unless they Prem material. If looking at loan full back cover then Debuchy or Henreque could be OK but not ideal

  • 93 OneAlanShearer // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:43 PM

Optimistic – that’s exactly why I think we need 2 as we can’t risk one getting injured and being back to square 1. So buy 1 each of these options is my thoughts:

    1. Austin/carroll/bas dost
    2. Beharino/Ben yedder

Experienced versus young and nippy options.

I truly hope Ashley has deep pockets. ..This is a massive opportunity to turn the club around.

Spending now makes huge sense. Available players with concerns others may not be brave enough to gamble on. Plus prices and wages and interest will all go up.

Settle all our gaps and squad needs now. Even the cover issues. Then those that font and haven’t work we try to off load in the summer. It’s risk wage wise but the risk of going down and waiting to build in the summer are bigger.

  • 94 jimmysmith // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:47 PM

If we do have Shelvey, who I think is Wijnaldum and Sissoko quality, then we just need a left back to have what looks a very decent group. We’ll need two or three more in the off season. A striker, winger and CB, and a number moved on. But there would be enough there then to be able to push this side safely into mid table, where he really should already have us, and if McC can’t manage it, which is looking a distinct possibility, then we’ll need a new head coach too.

  • 95 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:49 PM

I think that new trialist we’ve just signed from Palace must be a friend of Ashley’s with a name like Hoare.

Jimmy smith WE definitely need a left back as we have only young Mbabu as cover for both full backs with Haidara out long term injured Only other option is Colback but not really his role. We definitely need a CF with goals in him & replacement for Colo

In my opinion, we should sort out our defence next, assuming Shelvey is signing.

Koulibaly in defence with Mbemba with Janmaat and Willems either side would be epic. Lascelles, Dummett and Taylor adequate reserves. Sell Willo and Colo. Haidara, Dummett and Mbau adequate cover at full back.

  • 107 jimmysmith // Jan 12, 2016 at 12:57 AM

Newcastle have got seven players who can play up front through the middle. We need one of real quality and a couple moved on. I’d suggest Cisse and Rivierre are surplus, and quite possibly Dejong the rate he’s going.

I’d prefer we get the striker now, but he needs to be the real deal, so I’m prepared to wait, because it’s so important to get this position right, and if McC is half the coach he is cracked up to be, and any sort of manager, with Saivet and Shelvey introduced to the match day squad, he should definitely get the side scoring goals.

All the strikers we have have scored goals wherever they’ve been, even Rivierre, who I like as a player, despite his risible conversion rate for us so far, admittedly though in injury ravaged sides, and having been injured himself. He’s still worth having a look at when fit, which by will accounts will be soon.

At CB we also seem ok till the off season. I think Colo has been good apart from one or two poor showings, and he’s certainly not alone in that department, and then there’s Taylor, Lascelles and Dummett, even if Willo goes to Wolves, but left back is a problem. Dummett just doesn’t get forward with any sort of efficacy at all. Mbabu doesn’t either on that side, and Haidarra is good, but injured, and still not accomplished enough to be considered a first choice in the position.

I agree we should sell Cisse. He is not able to adapt to the tactics of McLaren.

It would appear the coach does not rate De Jong therefore we should sell him for as much as we can get. However, I would keep Riviere and play him in his preferred role as a wide left attacker in a 433 system.

The defence needs reinforcing now because judging by the number of goals we concede, we need strengthening especially s we need to achieve a minimum of 23 points from 19 games.

    expat,
At 52M we can’t really complain it wasn’t enough, previous neglect and buying with sell on rather than what they’d bring to the team was the biggest issue. If we keep everyone and buy that decent LB, CB and striker I think we might just scrape by.

  • 128 Santon03 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:53 AM

If we could win against manutd, I think it will the turning point. I hope SM can emulate Glenn Roeder, we were at the same position mid season and ended up 7th if I’m not mistaken.
We usually play better against big teams, I think we could win against manutd.
Total spending so far is 56.5mil if we signed Jonjo (12m) then it will be 68.5mil. It’s a lot of money for a club that’s not consistently in top 8, imo Ashley has kept his word.

  • 129 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 12, 2016 at 4:09 AM

Im hoping this CF has been identified and they are busy sorting out personal terms. A proven one, with either being really outstanding in another league, or someone with alot of experience from this league who has proven himself.

I know it’s always good to see players coming into the club, but the priorities look way off so far this window to me. I hope these puchases are not only with a view to how much they sell for.

We do not need to strengthen the midfield right now, what we need is goals to stay in the league. If any position can wait it is CM it’s a bit bewildering as I see it.

The team have not been playing badly, they just need a proper CF with experience and a hunger to do well to put the ball in the net. We are screaming out for one.

Colback, Anita, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, De jong, Marveux, Tiote can all do a job in CM. More than enough cover.

Watching them blow cash on more CM’s instead of putting it towards a proper CF or atleast a CB or LB is killing me. WTF? Surely they have seen the stats and the lack of goals, this should of been sorted out and been made a priority.

  • 130 Jail for Ashley // Jan 12, 2016 at 4:14 AM

  • 131 Jail for Ashley // Jan 12, 2016 at 4:18 AM

I am still bewidered by the decision to let MYM and HBA go on the last day of the window. Every journo , pundit and fan was saying we need a CB and a forward. It really is like it’s an up yours type mentality, we’ll do it our way thank you very much. That attitude has led to three relegation battles in the last four seasons.

  • 132 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 12, 2016 at 4:23 AM

    Jail,

It’s like Deja Vu all over again, I really hope they have this forward sorted. If all is well and they do bring in the forward then fine, brilliant. But I expected this to be sorted by now given the situation and what is at stake. And also with the money involved next season.

If any position can wait at the Toon until the summer it’s CM.

  • 133 Jail for Ashley // Jan 12, 2016 at 5:00 AM

    TP,
If they don’t get this window absolutely spot on we’re down as I don’t think Mclaren has it in him to turn it round. That season after we finished fifth we didn’t have the worst start but were completely deflated by the lack of ambition which the five signings provided a boost. We have had the worst start in any of our previous disastrous campaigns under Ashley and I just can’t see how he can turn it around without the exact blend of players being bought.

  • 134 davis_toons // Jan 12, 2016 at 5:18 AM

The day before the Liverpool match, Swansea manager Garry Monk criticised Shelvey’s disciplinary record, telling him to “wise up” and put a stop to an accumulation of yellow cards earned through “laziness”

That’s the problem with Shelvey. We can see that during his game. Doesn’t work enough for the team. Slightly like a Mario Balotelli in the Midfield at times…hopefully he can restart at a new club like Newcastle.

We need his passing abilities but not his workrate.

Now that he is available then we will have to get him if not give it a pass.

Would rather us get in a DM or a CD.

  • 135 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 5:49 AM

Bringing in Saivet and Shelvey almost certainly means a centre mid is going. I know the drawbacks with Tiote, but he is far more effective then any other we have in his role – unless Saivet comes into that role. I’d prefer to allow Colback and/or Anita go then Tiote as they offer far less. We wouldn’t have been able to play Gini and Sissoko centrally against Watford without Tiote there.

Saivet (provided he settles) and Shelvey are probably straight upgrades on Anita and Colback. Keep Tiote until the summer and then upgrade or replace him.

We need a mobile centre forward in next, and probably a left back. That should tide us over and mean we survive comfortably.

    Davis,
That is from 2014. There aren’t going to be many combative midfielders that haven’t had one issue or another with discipline. Over the course of his career he collects a yellow every 6 games, and has received 2 reds, 1 straight, 1 for two yellows. Hardly on pitch disciplinary issues.

I think Liverpool is a special case for him given his past clubs.

I suppose I am just hard to please about the money spent this season considering how little was spent in previous years and how perilously close we came to relegation last year.

The 4 players brought in were clearly not enough, especially when you consider the failure of Thauvin and Mitrovic.

In fact, I was go as far as saying the surprise showing of Perez last season saved our bacon and possibly too much pressure has been put on the kid this year to repeat and better.

Like a few others on here, our defence worries me judging by the number of goals we concede season after season. I would have thought that more consideration would have been given here with greater experienced players bought.

  • 143 firebug666 // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:56 AM

    expat

I disagree with Thauvin and Mitrovic being classed as failures mate. It is the team that has failed.

Thauvin has been given bit parts maybe the last 5 – 10 minutes of a match, hardly enough time to get up to speed in the game and make any significant impact.

Mitrovic has been starved of any real service getting just one or two chances in a game, most of our deliveries into the box are over or under hit, this is bound to affect his confidence as him movement in the box is pretty good, just the final ball is lacking.

I know people go on about him missing sitters, but he’s not the only one doing that. Other strikes get goals because they get plenty of chances and maybe score one in ten chances.

With a run in the team Thauvin may come good, he just hasn’t had a chance yet, and with some proper service I think Mitrovic will start banging them in.

These lads are new to this league and for me they haven’t been given a fair chance yet.

I actually think they do need to do something with the midfield. Anita and Colback are battlers but at the bottom end of the quality spectrum overall. Sissoko and Gini are class acts but both blow hot and cold and neither are “engine room” types. Tiote is unpredictable, Goufran and Marveaux shouldn’t be anywhere near a Premiership squad. I really don’t know much about Saivet, but he is not a blue-chip sort of player obviously. Shelvey is worth the gamble, but he definitely is a gamble. Far from making our own luck, we continue to chance it. At least we are seeing some activity, which acknowledges our plight, which is seriously desperate, make no mistake.

  • 146 firebug666 // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:08 AM

If we just go off our last few games, the overall play is not to bad, but we are lacking vision in the final third, we need some players who can create chances and deliver that final ball.
