Sky Sports Video – Newcastle Could Be Pushing For Europe

9:12 am, Monday, January 11th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 120 Comments

Here´s a good discussion of Newcastle and their current problems by the Sky Sports team.

At the end they sum things up by saying the players we have are good and with a good manager – like Mauricio Pochettino – rather than a good playing field coach like McClaren – who they point out has proved in the past he is not a good manager – then we could be pushing for Europe.

You have to get past the initial bit about Harry the Hornet and Perez´s terrible miss after he was brilliantly set up by Moussa Sissoko and some initial digs at Newcastle.

I was singing the praises of Pochettino around 18 months ago. only to be informed by Rotonda that Martinez was the man for us.
Rotonda pulled rank on me by telling me he’d got his coaching badges and new a talented coach when he saw him.

Fantastic video… the half time, they mock us with Watford’s mascot.

  • 3 one fine day // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:31 AM

    Both are decent coaches .
Not like they were coming to us anyway ,not under the current regime.
Who honestly even raised an eyebrow when Claudio went to Leicester ?
Bet remi guard wishes he had given us more of a look now

  • 4 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:32 AM

I can’t actually believe that one, the club would even consider selling Tiote in January and two, that some fans seem to support the idea. What happens if Shelvey decides he’s not up for a few games, he knows he can’t be dropped, whether letting Santon leave in January last year led us to losing eight in a row but it definitely contributed to our woeful form and near miss. If they take 3M for Tiote because they’re scared they’ll only get two in the summer then there’s really no hope for the club.
What a thoroughly despicable comment from a thoroughly despicable poster that KK’s entertainers were a blight on the club for raising our expectatoons

  • 5 one fine day // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:38 AM

Said the same on tiote a few posts back .
    Expectatoons ?
That’s my new favourite word and very apt where nufc is concerned

  • 6 Goofy // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:38 AM

I agree totally with your tactics. If we play the 3-5-2 again we should win. Like you said they don’t use the wings, we could definitely exploit them down the wings, even the 4-2-3-1 could work if we keep pressing.

Mbabu hasn’t had a bad game yet so should be included, hopefully he was subbed to keep him fresh for tomorrow. Dummett looks better in the centre. If Colo’s injured Dummet and Mbemba will do alright.

I really fancy the win. Man u aren’t that great lately, we play better against bigger teams. Maybe our players do it against the bigger teams in the hope they’ll be noticed and bought by the big guns, especially with our club being a stepping stone to a potentially bigger club.

I do feel sorry for Thauvin and Mitro. They are both being attacked far to early. Mitro has to feed off scraps most of the time. Thauvin hasn’t had a decent run to adjust to the pace of the league, he only gets 5-10 mins to impress.

The fans have every right to express anger but I think it’s being vented in the wrong direction. There’s is one man at fault for the state of the club. Ar$ley! Karma seems to be doing it’s job lately, hopefully we don’t get punished by the fat cnut for his losses.

  • 7 toontaff2 // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:40 AM

Maybe Harry the Hornet could take the lads for shooting practice at Benton today?

  • 8 Goofy // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:44 AM

Who’s Harry the Hornet? Noticed him mentioned a few times lately.

  • 9 Goofy // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:47 AM

What’s happened to Pappis Cisse ? Anyone ? he could potentially be the one to stop the goal drought.

  • 11 Rotonda heights // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:48 AM

    Hi Carl / Ian?

Nice way to start the day. As far as pointless, inaccurate and non – sensical comments go you’ve topped it there.

With the greatest respect I think you are being just a wee bit of a – – – – there or have very selective recall.

If you look at a lot of my emails I have long advocated Pochetinno and several other leading foreign coaches.

Yes I like Martinez very much and still do but I have just as much time for Pochetinno who I admire greatly along with your Klopps, Jose sampauli, even Flores etc.

I would kill for a Pochetinno type as manager so just don’t know where you have got that total BS from.

As for coaching badges yes I have them but dont see how that is relevant to whether I like Martinez or Poch. Take the trouble to actually see the content in my comments and you won’t continue to appear to be so one eyed and misinformed on such a regular basis.

  • 12 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:53 AM

What’s the point of a MOTM poll when virtually no one when to the game? I imagine most folk have only seen brief highlights. Would Ed in the US have seen the whole game to be able to give Mbabu MOTM?

  • 13 SuperShearer // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:58 AM

Did I miss the memo about this blog becoming a weird, immature, name-calling forum? Don’t we all support the same team? By all means disagree with fellow fans but don’t stoop so low as to insult them.

  • 14 toon kk // Jan 11, 2016 at 9:59 AM

I agree with you, how can people vote for motm if they weren’t at the game, only a few highlights were televised.

  • 15 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:01 AM

On Mitro, I’ve said from the first time I saw him that he looks heavy and lumbering. He looked a bit slimmer after being dropped and working with the fitness coach. But for a young man of 21 he still appears to be far too heavy. That’s not to write him off. I can’t see him getting a lot of goals but that’s not a problem if he can help a natural goalscorer to 20 -30 a season. Whether or not hes capable of that is a different matter. However, it was clearly a major error of judgment to rely on him this season. A massive gamble.

  • 16 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:04 AM

Was there not about 5K at the game

  • 17 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:06 AM

    Super Shearer,
How long have you been reading/posting ?

  • 18 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:07 AM

Radio Newcastle were slating Mitro for not moving around and putting the effort in. He seemed to do okay in the few highlights I’ve seen.

  • 19 martoon // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:08 AM

Well said SuperShearer I really wonder about the mental age of some on here!

  • 20 Dennis Twice // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:11 AM

    Attack Toon attack, attack!

  • 21 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:12 AM

Perhaps so. But I imagine if any of them have voted on here (only the odd away fan posts), they’d be very much in the minority. I think I read Thauvin is third. If that’s right, how come? Particularly given that he was singled out by some fans?

  • 22 Sliema // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:18 AM

    Super Shearer

I think that this kind of behaviour from a half dozen or more very regular posters has really held back the success of this blog, or at least the comment section anyway.

I’m sure I’m not the only reader who refrains from posting much because of how rudely people react to opinions they don’t share. It’s very immature.

  • 23 Sliema // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:20 AM

Radios Newcastle slate just about everyone. Which is their right ofc. But they just hop on the fastest moving bandwagon imo.

  • 24 Sliema // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:22 AM

If you had known we would only buy one striker, would you have preferred Mitrovic or Austin in the summer?

  • 25 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:26 AM

I hope this isn’t the beginning of a three day rant on the pointlessness of motm polls on non televised games 😀

  • 26 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:26 AM

The Times report that the 25-year-old Bordeaux winger Henri Saivet flew into Tyneside last night to complete a move to St James’s Park.

  • 27 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:37 AM

The president of Bordeaux Jean-Louis Triaud seems to have confirmed it.

  • 28 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:38 AM

Henri Saivet has played 12 games for Bordeaux from CM and 8 games from DM.

Jeff you are probably right Newcastle will probably deploy him as a winger!

  • 29 lesh // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:39 AM

McClaren insists he is still not concerned by United’s current plight though. (Chronicle)

He and Charnley must be the only ones!

  • 30 Ayozeserious // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:39 AM

Henri saivet is apparently close to signing from the little bit I’ve seen of him he would certainly add to the midfielders we currently have. He has a good shot on him and he isn’t bad in the air despite his size. Seems to time his jumps very well for set pieces. The major questions I have concern his fitness and how long will it take for him to adapt to the English game. Either way if the deal is finalised later today let’s hope he can do the business here and that he is the first of many.

  • 31 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:53 AM

The first thing you need in a bad situation is someone with a cool head – no room for Corporal Jones at the moment.

  • 32 beermonkey // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:58 AM

  • 33 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 11, 2016 at 10:58 AM

lesh…seeing as the problem with Newcastle are ppl like Charnley and McC it’s no wonder they are calm!

  • 34 AncientC // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:00 AM

Saviet was out of contract next summer. It makes you wonder how much precedence that factor had in the deal. Another player on the Moondial agency books too, quite a coincidence.

  • 35 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:03 AM

Tiote probably have 5 more games in him this season due to bookings and injury of course! A bit like Cisse!

I wonder when Colo will break down. Saylor will probably just be back for him to get injured again.

Jail if you wonder why these players should have been upgraded in the summer then here’s your answer.

The amount of games they don’t contribute (and the little they contribute when they do play)

No player should leave without a proper replacement of course. That goes without saying.

  • 36 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:03 AM

Myself and Lilongwe discussed the very same thing, I would have gone for Austin where PL goals would have been guaranteed.

  • 37 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:06 AM

Wouldn’t have been red carded against Arsenal either or nearly banned for ten games for assault fifteen seconds in to his debut.

  • 38 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:18 AM

    morning all
reading this morning about few things and thought id have a say…
mitro…..same as thauvin really,a young lad, coming into a tough, physical league, into a team lacking confidence thats under performed most of the season, his confidence is not high so he’s missed a few sitters…so what it happens the give him and thauvin for that matter a break, didnt shearer go on long run of games without scoring for england before euro 96 and yet ended up being leading scorer in the competition… happens to strikers, give him/them time.
tiote…..hope he stays personally as i think he is slowly getting back to decent, not his best at the minute but decent and believe he’s the best at what he does at the club.
saivet…..looks a strong player hope his fitness issues are behind him dont need another crock….seems to of had a canny eye for goal in the past but more cm nowadays, apparently he’s flew in to complete the deal so thats looking good.
shelvey…..he’s took the piss out of us a good few times when we’ve played against him and think he would give us a something colback, anita tiote dont, shots and forward passing

  • 39 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:20 AM

I like Mitro and think he has promise but he was bought as the main man and that’s too much to ask of a 20 year old in a team that had been woefulky mismanaged for the last six months.

  • 40 Blofal // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:20 AM

    Saivet reportedly in Newcastle..

  • 41 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:21 AM

I’d still have gone with Mitrovic. Premier league goals aren’t guaranteed by anybody. Look at Benteke and Costa this season, Bony when he has played. They all have a greater pedigree than Austin, yet have found it difficult to get goals, despite being in better sides than Newcastle.

We need a mobile striker to compliment Mitro. Mitro offers more outside of the box than Austin and has better hold up play. The mistake wasn’t signing Mitro, the mistake was not getting a mobile forward who could play wide and through the middle to play alongside him. Plus/Or people to create a regular flow of good chances.

  • 42 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:23 AM

    Hypothetical answer…
With the easy chances and wrong decisions players have missed this season ( I know all players miss chances – but bloody hell we have missed some sitters)
v Southampton 2-1 up had a 3 on 1 Cisse makes wrong decision
    ended 2-2 – 2points dropped
v Man Utd 0-0 each 90th minute 3 on 1 Cisse again shot instead of passing ended 0-0 – 2 points dropped
v Man city 1-0 up missed two easy chances to go 3-0
lost 6-1 – most likely still lost
v Sunderland – missed umpteen easy chances to go 1-0 up 2-0 lost 3-0
    take a draw 1 point
v Stoke – missed a hatful of chances two sitters if I am correct plus Butland had a blinder
    Drew 0-0 dropped 2 points
Aston Villa 1-0 up – De Jong missed a open goal to put us 2-0 up
    Drew 1-1 – dropped 2 points
Everton 0-0 at the time Mitro missed open goal with header
lossed 1-0 – draw dropped a point could of been 3
Arsenal 0-0 at time missed a hatful of chances
lost 1-0 – draw dropped a point could of been 3

    – the Bournemouth game when we won and should of been stuffed

That adds up to 11 points dropped with missing sitters or wrong decisions – 3 points did not deserve at Bournemouth
would be 8 more points would put us on 25 and mid-table

  • 43 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:24 AM

Personally I think Shearers goal drought leading up to those Euros was that all our games were friendlies and that affected his cutting edge, just my opinion

  • 49 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Saivet was a Football Manager wonderkid 10 years ago as a 16 year old. Clearly hasn’t kicked on and this is a bit of an underwhelming signing, and another gamble on a player settling quickly and staying fit.

    Let’s hope he works out.

  • 52 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:34 AM

Difficult to know, both need chances in the box to score regularly, so a lot depends on the service. However, Mitro links well with the other players in the build up, and he has played some clever little touches creating opportunities for others. Looking at our squad I’d have more confidence in Cisse to tuck those sort of chances away then any other player.

Tiote would have to be fit and on form though to play them both. Leaving Gini central and two out wide, at the moment Sissoko and probably Perez although Aarons and Thauvin probably deserve a chance soon. There pace and movement in behind a big strong hold up and link player with a poacher could work well.

  • 53 Goofy // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:39 AM

I’ll be happy if Shelvey signs. He’s got power, has a good shot on him and links up well with the foreards, exactly what we need right now. Not sure about Saviet. Get another striker to take some of the strain off Mitro and maybe a big CB, that would be a good window.

We don’t need another LW, We have Aarons and Thauvin. We don’t have much cover on the right but could get by with Sisdoko and Janmaat.

  • 54 Mister Tuff // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:47 AM

Looks promising about Saivet being in the Toon for his medical??
He apparently played at the weekend against Montpellier and after the game refused to deny it was his last game.
So if Ryder at the Chronic says he’s here coupled with the above – looks just about certain to be true.

Don’t think they’ll have time to register him for the game tomorrow. Hope to hell he’s a decent player.

  • 55 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:52 AM

Bournemouth are certainly going for it. Iturbe is a big gamble, but has lots of talent when things click for him. A good deal on loan, and then Afobe looks a good purchase, more expensive than Austin, yet they plumped for him. He and his family used to live in Bournemouth before he made it, so they would surely have had a good shout of getting him to join.

We were heavily linked with Afobe in the summer, but were reportedly priced out at £15million, if that was the case it seems strange we weren’t interested at £10million, although we don’t do bidding wars do we, so maybe that put us off.

  • 56 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 11, 2016 at 11:54 AM

On another note, did anyone watch the Swans match yesterday? We have been linked with Kemar Roofe and I noticed he bagged a couple yesterday. How did he perform in the rest of the game?

If you ignore Gini, 2 Premier league goals is 2 more than all our other midfielders have collectively managed against Prem opposition this season….

Pub talk. These people get paid to ‘chat’ like that? I’ve had better conversations on this blog, the True Geordie has pointed out more significant things in his rants.

How about some tactical analysis to see what is really wrong? How about a SWOT analysis of the team and the individuals and the coaching team? How about a more knowledgable look at the scouting set up? Pub talk, no preparation, over a couple pints.

Sorry lads, you must up your game. So must my team, I know.

  • 61 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:20 PM

The only reason you get three day rants from me is that I respond to folk who will not accept that someone has a different opinion. I’m confident Sliema is right when he says people are held back from posting because they don’t want to be hit with a load of insults for expressing a different opinion.

I honestly believe that some folk are so convinced they are right they get apoplectic if anyone disagrees. They’ve believed something for so long and have gone unchallenged for do long, they’re convinced they’re right. They therefore keep on going but making little sense.

Most matters are opinions anyway. How can someone’s opinion cause so much resentment that you’re labelled as a WUM and worse? The issue of whether the lack of due diligence detrimentally affected the club didn’t even get to the point of opinion. Nobody who said it did detrimentally affect the club could even offer up a mechanism or theory as to how it did. They were stumped. Once you’ve got a theory, it’s valid to take a view on it. But let’s have the theory first. Easier for them to assassinate characters or claim superior knowledge or expertise than use intellect. You’ve just got to ask yourself how anyone can claim their superior knowledge is relevant never mind settles it, when they’ve no idea of the other person’s qualifications or expertise.

At least with the advertising we had the theory. It’s just nobody was prepared to look at the evidence in case it scuppered their preconceived ideas about Ashley. Where would they be if they’d criticised Ashley for years only for the figures to suggest they’d been wrong all along? Far easier not to look. Far easier to insult someone and attack their character.

You’ve got to ask yourself why, when someone provides illuminating figures, people refuse even to look. Nobody would even look. That speaks volumes to me.

  • 62 ToonMatt // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:25 PM

I agree a 100% with what they say about McClaren, He is simply not a good manager and his track record proves this but Ashley would never hire a top manager, He employs average managers who are cheap, we all know by now that Ashley is here to make money and that’s it? 3 matches won in the FA cup since he bought the club pretty much sums up his ambition, we need a change in ownership sacking McClaren and hiring another average manager is not the answer, Ashley needs to go now.

  • 63 Spoof // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:27 PM

Just watched the video above and I have to agree, with a decent manager we would be much better placed than what we are looking at what we have, I really dislike McClaren and would gladly see him go now.

Having said that the players do have to take some responsibility as well, how many times have we been the better side and lost, as much as I dislike Macca he was not to blame against Watford as his tactics and set up were better than his opponents, it was the players who let us and him down, but I would still sack Macca.

  • 64 mindshaft // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:27 PM

Think Saivet is meant to replace Anita in midfield with Colback / Tiote lined up to be the defensive mid
Anita has played well this season although hopefully Saivet is an upgrade … I haven’t seen him play so can’t comment – we desperately need a goal scorer – we’ve missed at least 12 relatively easy chances in the last four games

  • 65 Goldmbemba // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:29 PM

Is it just me or does Ashley HAVE to splash out now to give us a chance of staying up for the £gazillions next season?

I wouldnt be surprised if he did splash the cash now. Its just with his track record you never know.

Still baffled as to why we havent signed or been linked with another CB.

I agree with the pundits…Maclaren is a No 2 and if we had a half decent manager in place we’d be in a much better position…not sure about challenging for Europe but certainly not 18th in the League staring down a barrel.

  • 68 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:34 PM

I don’t really care about due dilligence, advertising etc. What has been proved to me without shadow of doubt is that Mike Ashley has absolutely no sporting ambition for the club.

  • 69 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:38 PM

i really hope Saivet comes good. we don’t have time for him to ‘adapt.’ he needs to hit the ground running immediately.
    i really hope he does.

Or he’ll just be a long line of failed signings by Carr.

  • 70 Goofy // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:38 PM

Mclaren has one of them droopy cheek faces. He doesn’t seem the type to inspire a team, it looks like he’d strain to smile never mind inspire. Fair enough Mourinho had a grumpy looking face but could. Mourinho is narsasistic where as Mclaren looks like he’s been through the wars and lost. Just can’t see the guy lifting a team that needs a boost right now.

  • 71 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:39 PM

He has employed his last two managers who like you say are average and cheap but most importantly absolutely desperate to manage again in the PL and will therefore accept the conditions imposed. What I don’t like about Mclaren is that he never got tge job due to his success at Derby but the fact that he had PL experience and was desperate to get back in the top league, his ego made him believe that if Pardew could make a fist of it then so could he.

  • 72 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:41 PM

  • 73 Spoof // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:42 PM

He does need to but I hope he doesn’t, if we go down and his cash cow dries up as it will, combined with SD shares being in freefall it may force him to sell us at a realistic price.

Hopefully, due to ongoing concerns regarding his failure to meet the minimum wage he may be banned from being a director due to the fit and proper persons test, is this wishful thinking, perhaps so but it could happen ?

  • 74 lesh // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:48 PM

Again, facing relegation under Charnley. His signings didn’t reflect the squad’s needs. Ashley wanted to win a cup – we won’t.

The solution should be a no brainer for Ashley – sack Charnley.. simple!

Kyle Cameron joins York on a month loan.

A couple in this week would be nice.

  • 79 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 12:57 PM

Does Charnley actually do anything though, he doesn’t speak to even give us an insight into his character, every interview has been carefully worded, he might have not have enough input to even merit being sacked, what does Moncur do, why isn’t Beardo on the board, it’s all an illogical mystery.

  • 80 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:03 PM

Although we didn’t win anything I still feel pride when strangers I strike up conversation with tell me how they loved that entertainers team in the nineties, how any fan of Newcastle United can say that was a blight on our history is completely beyond me, it is discouraged to call someone a WUM for comments you don’t agree with but surely that is a wind up ?

  • 81 lesh // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:07 PM

What is Charnley for apart from doing Ashley’s bidding?

He’s a waste of space and as for Moncur, he’s supposed to be the conduit to the fans or something and be the Club’s ambassador. Aren’t ambassadors their to represent the Club in a positive light? So, back to it, what are they for?

  • 82 Sliema // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:15 PM

Could not agree more. I was only a nipper at the time but it stayed with me and I was reminiscing with a mate about that the other day. If only we had won the title back then things ‘might’ have been a lot different.

    Everybody’s second team weren’t we?

  • 83 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:16 PM

    I honestly don’t know
A group of individuals that are elected as, or elected to act as, representatives of the stockholders to establish corporate management related policies and to make decisions on major company issues.
How on earth are any of them sufficiently qualified to do that, Ashley is the only one with the nous to be a board member, yet “isn’t ” one ????

  • 84 LGFUAD21 // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:18 PM

It bemuses me that we are after this Henri Saivet.

A CAM that can be a make shift winger. Do we not have that in Perez and Gini. Not to mention Thauvin.

I’d rather go after Townsend, at least he is winger by trade (apparently)

Let’s look at who Saivet can displace in our team?

    – Sissoko
    – Gini
    – Thauvin
    – Perez
    – De Jong

Can we honestly say this guy is going to improve the team. He has about 1/20th of the reputation that Cabella, Thauvin and De Jong had on arrival so whats to say hes any better and you wouldnt drop Moussa or Gini. Perez needs to start putting some chances away though or he should be dropped.

It makes no sense as a signing.

Lets look at what we really need:

    1) A midfield anchor to replace Tiote – 0 reports
    2) A striker capable of putting chances away – lukewarm reports and few of proven talent
    3) A specialist LB – No reports
    4) A CB – Not my priority but we are 1 injury away from bedlam in defence.

These arent in order of priority but these are four areas where a decent signing could vastly improve the team instantly.

At least Shelvey would bring a quality to our midfield that we dont have with his passing, although his arrival would spell the end for Anita I reckon – It’d still leave Colback/Anita as our CDM if Tiote leaves which they are not. When I say CDM i mean an enforcer like Tiote, Mackele. A CM playing in a deep role does not make them a CDM.

If they arent going to improve us, I’d rather not sign them.

Defence is ok. Conceding 1 goal per game aint bad.

  • 86 Jail for Ashley // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:21 PM

The whole worlds second or third team depending on Nationality, a blight on our history for raising our expectations, that 1900’s team were bang out of order as were the FA cup experts of the early fifties, if it wasnt for them we could just accept we’re as shyte as Stoke or WBA.

  • 87 catchy in norway // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:25 PM

Wow finally people agree with me, I have said for a long time we have a good squad of players , that should be pushing top 6.

I think the manager we need is Karanka at boro, he would have them flying, he is a very clever young manager.

If any one would care to check they would see last year before we went for Shteve , my 2 choices were Karanka no1 then Shteve , both are good coaches , Karanka is the better of the 2 , but Shteve was always going to be the cheaper choice , and that why I have backed him up until a few weeks ago , I new he was going to be chose based on how much we would pay out for a manager.

  • 88 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:31 PM

Either he’s no sporting ambition for the club or he’s completely incompetent. I tend to think there’s too much truth in both.

  • 89 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:33 PM

I’d have taken Austin. Okay, I didn’t know much about Mitro but Austin was far less of a gamble. Right age too for what we need this season.

  • 90 LGFUAD21 // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:35 PM

I think Mitrovic WILL come good but we cant afford to wait for that to happen.

  • 91 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:37 PM

Completely incompetent on the footballing side I should say.

  • 92 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:40 PM

reading about saivet,he’s been playing cm more recently and been quite impressive according to reports in this position,so thing he is going to be either a replacement or competition for tiote, colback and anita and shelvey if signed will have the other cm position……from what i can gather anyways, maybe wrong thats the way it looks to me tbh

  • 94 Jib // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:42 PM

I would never accuse you of having an open mind.

The first thing to do when criticisng something you strongly disagree with is to avoid making stuff up otherwise you lose the debate before you start.

I never said Keegan was a blight on our history .
Rather than post what I did say , heres a link so folk if they can be arsed can view and make their own minds up it’s post no.144

  • 95 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:45 PM

I think Blackley probably fell into the same category I did when people on here were suggesting I was pro Ashley. We both just argued or disagreed with some of the claims made against him, which in our opinion’s weren’t justified. I said at the time, there are plenty of things to have a go at Mike Ashley for without creating others.

  • 96 Small World // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:46 PM

For a team with out pacy forwards, wingers and unwilling to hoof the ball aimlessly the answer has to be having attacking midfield players who can break the defensive line and peg the ball back to the CF who has shaken off a marker / made some space. Sissoko and Perez can fulfill the first part, Mitro isn’t yet up to second. To date he hasn’t proved effective at facing the goal, unless attempting a header. He’s a prospect but not what we require at the moment

  • 97 Goldmbemba // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:46 PM

yeah thats what ive read. It looks like he’s a replacement for which ever one of tiote / colback / anita has had the worse game the week before.

I think what we need is PERSONALITIES. Look at what the likes of yaya, vardy, deeney, kompany etc, mean to their teams. I cant pick out anyone in our squad who delivers that.

Colo has NEVER come across as a personality, let a lone captain.

Kevin Nolan was the best personality we’ve had in a long while, pity he wasnt younger or we might still have his drive in midfield.

This is why Im actually hopefuly about Shelvey. He has disciplinary issues but he seems like’s good enough to play every week and take cames by the scruff and drive the team forward with a bit of quality. Im amazed swansea are in the position that they might sell him tbh.

  • 98 The overrated Frenchman // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:52 PM

Is there one single Newcastle supporter, anywhere in the world, saying to themselves “Henri Saviet – yes!! That’s the player we need!” I truly doubt it. The curse of Carr has struck again. You couldn’t make this up.

  • 99 Goldmbemba // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:56 PM

The first rag to claim Saivet has signed. Expect a new post from Ed in about 5 seconds:

  • 100 Toonfan8 // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:58 PM

Saivet is good box to box midfielder, powerfull, but I think he will need some time to adapt to English football, but he is good player. Now Shelvey, Berahino and Remy on loan with option…

  • 101 SPRINGY // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:58 PM

never thought colo should of been givin the captaincy it makes him immovable tbh, saivet is captain at bordeaux(if im right) so should be clued up and have a bit about him….i think we should go after lamine kone who sunderland could’nt sign, norwich are apparently after now and i think he could be a decent cb for us….big strong fairly quick and playing well and also only 5m….for the money and other player availability he’s worth a shout, its not like koulibaly, matip,n’koulou are going to sign so why not him

  • 102 Goldmbemba // Jan 11, 2016 at 1:59 PM

by the way what is it with us and 5 YEAR deals all the time?

other clubs are like, ok nobody’s ever heard of you [insert – french_one_season_wonder – here] so we’re going to offer you a 3 years deal like anyone else would do. See how you get on, maybe you’ll earn an extension…

Courageously saying what plenty of others are probably thinking.

  • 104 geordie157 // Jan 11, 2016 at 2:02 PM

Although he’s not a great signing. I think saivet is an upgrade on the likes of gouffran, obertan and marveaux.

So as long as another two or three follow which improve us then that’s fine. Shelvey I can see happening. But I can’t see which striker we’ll get as Austin, remy and even berahino will get better options ie either London or a team challenging fit Europe.

In defence it’s either sign a left back with dummett then becoming cb/ lb cover or sign a centre back and get willems signed up now for a summer move.

  • 118 Spoof // Jan 11, 2016 at 2:18 PM

Jib, I have read that post and sorry m8 but imho your wrong what happened was that KK gave us a glimpse of what we could be and what we could achieve with an ownership parallel to that of Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool etc, with Sir John we were better than most and competing, and with sustained effort we would now be a major force.

Chelsea and Man City are now both at the top table in respect to expected success, Chelsea have no right to be their as there success is solely due to the oil baron, Man City fans could claim and in my opinion rightly claim that they should be challenges as they have been in the past and they are big enough to be a major force in their own right, what they may claim is that they are currently getting a helping hand to put them where they should be, and I would say they are right.

But imho we are bigger again than Man City, potentially anyway, but what has held us back, and I have to say the same also applies to our nearest and dearest, that lot down the road, is continuous poor running of the club.

However poor running of the club doesn’t mean that we should accept the KK era as being a blight or an artificial positioning of the club or any other discription anyone wishes to use, what it should be used as is a target, that is what we should aim for, past failings are history, Man U got relegated in the 1970’s, did there fans give up and accept that they are a second rate club, no they did not they continued to ask and demand the best, we should do likewise, failing in the past is not an acceptable reason for failing for ever more, we are better than that.

  • 120 toonaus // Jan 12, 2016 at 1:34 AM

I can see shelvey as being a good signing for us as he can create opportunities in midfield and can also score but for the love of god get a bloody striker first. We can have all the assist into the box we want but we need to be firing it home not over the bar into the crowd unless we construct new goals and have them approved as a handy cap for us like in golf.first signing was a steal at 5million what a surprise still buying cheap to sell high. We need a game plan and a manager like poccitino help us get a game plan not a free for all throw everything at the kitchen sink mentally. Sign Remy on loan or Austin we dont need some unproven player from d league.
