One Change – Colback Returns For Newcastle

6:48 pm, Tuesday, January 12th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 398 Comments

nufc emblemmanchester-united-fc.png

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has just named his team for the tough home game against Manchester United tonight – and the game will be watched by Newcastle’s two new signings – Henri Saivet from Bordeaux and Jonjo Shelve from Swansea.

Newcastle: Elliot, Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini (c), Dummett, Sissoko, Colback, Tiote, Wijnaldum, Perez, Mitrovic
Subs: Darlow Lascelles Sterry Gouffran de Jong Marveaux Toney

So it looks like both Kevin Mbabu and Florian Thauvin didn’t make the game through injury niggles and in comes Jack Colback for Kevin Mbabu.

The two new players will be introduced to the crowd at St. James’ Park at 7:30 – just 15 minutes before the game starts.

Hopefully that will give the fans and the players a big lift – help is on the way.

But first things first and the lads must go all out to try to get all 3 points tonight.

This is what Steve McClaren has said about the game tonight and he has asked the fans to support the team throughout the game – whatever happens:

“We desperately need the fans on our side,” “We need a similar atmosphere to what they produced against Liverpool and Everton, so they can get behind the players and get the place rocking.”

“It can really bring the performance out of the team and we’ll need that against Manchester United.”

“You’d say a goalless draw is the odds-on result,” “Then again, it could be 3-3 and everyone breaks their duck. You just don’t know. We just want to start well and put in a good performance.”

“Manchester United are a dangerous team with very good players who can control a game and hurt you on their day. We’ve got to make sure they don’t.”

“They’re still title contenders, I think everyone in the top six or seven has it in them to go on a good run of games and Manchester United are more than capable of doing that.”

“We need to keep doing what we’ve been doing with our performance,  but make sure we finish off at the other end.”

“We can take something from our performance at Old Trafford earlier in the season and be a side that’s hard to beat, hopefully show some end product and get the right result.”

Just over one in three fans think we can win this game – let’s hope they are right.

Just less than one in two fans think we will lose this game.

Good business this tbf getting Shelvey

Adds some boll0x to our midfield and takes away a direct relegation rivals spine
Be even better if it means we don’t have to witness Colback flouncing around in midfield every week!!

Oh and £8 mil for Tiote? Start the car…..hopefully the last time he gets booked for us tonight

  • 3 TheToonKing // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:51 PM

the bench is really strange…. Marveaux on there ?! and Sterry ? who’s Sterry ?

    Where’s Thauvin ? Aarons ?

  • 4 SPRINGY // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:52 PM

    so much for tiote suspended!lol

  • 5 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:52 PM

That line up shows why we need to keep going this window

Hoping Shelvey will see Schteve re invent our horrid formation which sees our 2 most creative central midfielders pushed out on to the wings leaving the most negative central midfield imaginable

  • 6 John Tudor // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:54 PM

    makem would have shelvey

    what a knobba

  • 7 John Tudor // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:54 PM

    would not hahah

  • 8 geordie157 // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:55 PM

    Holy crap marveaux on bench

  • 9 TikiTakaAcca // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:56 PM

So we play brilliantly against Arsenal, Wijnaldum gets moved into a central role.

Then HOW OBVIOUS was it that the deluded & clueless Mclaren would bottle it & shaft him back on the wing & go for the rotten, losing streak of 4-4-2.

    Sack this clown already.

  • 10 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:56 PM

maca never learns. 1-0 United is a lock. What does dummet have to do to get dropped? why cant Mbabu get in the game?????

  • 11 geordie157 // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:57 PM

Thauvin so say has a knock…..so say.

Is aarons ever going to play?!

  • 12 John Tudor // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:57 PM

    injured he is tacho

  • 13 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:58 PM

Can’t believe Jack (Useless) Colback is starting. Stupid steve. Marveaux should be starting. About time he was on the bench. Steve is a lunatic. Signing Saivet to play him as a defensive midfielder when he’s a winger/attacking midfielder. Playing Gouffran as a dm instead of a striker and finally keep playing Dummett instead of Mbabu. He’s the problem.

  • 14 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:59 PM

Sign Raphael Guerriero, Koulibaly, Townsend and Remy and lets call it a day.

All we’d need to do is tweak in the summer. Sign and sell one or two.

  • 15 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 12, 2016 at 6:59 PM

Genuinely can’t believe Gini and Sissoko are back on the wings

    Howay man Schteve

  • 16 John Tudor // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:00 PM

    lunatics are clever

  • 17 Goofy // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:00 PM

Somethings telling me Aarons is grtting sold. Everyone who seen him knows he is class. Quick buck for Arsley.

  • 18 SPRINGY // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:00 PM

    might be 4-2-3-1
    ——————————elliott——————————–
    janmaat———-mbemba—–colo————–dummet
    ——————tiote————-colback———————
    sissoko——————–gini————————perez
    —————————–mitro——————————-
similar to when we played them down there

  • 19 El Sleeve // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:04 PM

    im hoping it’s this
    ————–Elliot
    Janny—-Chancel—Colo—Dummy
    ——-Colback—-Tiote
    Sissoko—–Gini Wij—–Perez
    ———–Mitro

but knowing Schteve, he’ll revert to a 442, put gini out on the wing and then bring on another defender when we’re losing, you know, to draw the counter attack, like at Palace, ffs

We should be up and at the worst Man U side in years.

    HWTL!

  • 20 AncientC // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:04 PM

It reads more like a 4-4-1-1 to me.

Twitter official has it as a 4-4-2. Nufc.co.uk has it as a 4-2-3-1

  • 21 SPRINGY // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:05 PM

    could actually go 3-5-2..

That’s a bonus Tiote being in as he’s getting back to a bit of form. Could’ve sworn he’d got 5 yellows tho! Ah well I really fancy us to score tonight – and win !
Howay the lads get into them !

  • 35 John Tudor // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:14 PM

Newcastle have made there second signing Will Hoare from Crystal Palace after impressing in his trial.

Don’t know much about him but some Palace fans state he’s one for the future and Palace were stupid to let him go. He’ll join the development squad.

Seems we’re starting to realize now that it’s currently XP players we need not futures.

great deal signing this player but i’ve still got one concern, if we’re going to sign this guy and use him in CM does that indicate wini himself will remain on the wing?

Subs bench today has got marvo on, no better than thauvin that’s for sure guess thauvin must have some injury and why no arrons, does mac have less belief in him than pardew had in abeid or are we intent in selling him?

  • 40 check the toastie // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:30 PM

  • 42 toonking // Jan 12, 2016 at 7:30 PM

given how bad manure are i do have some belief in a win and these big teams do appear more easy to defeat.

manures recent performances does provide us one difficulty, we’ll still be needing to break down a defence like that of a bottom half table team.

Perez has dropped off completely since he has been supporting mitro

He has some nice touches in the Center but I wonder how we’d be if we pushed him up further dropped mitro and gave someone else the proper number 10 advanced role. Like Gini.

  • 116 JP...from The Rock // Jan 12, 2016 at 8:15 PM

Good play there from us but Wijnaldum has really hot hit the ball with more conviction and away from the keeper. He keeps hitting them straight at the keeper these days.

  • 192 Thump // Jan 12, 2016 at 8:40 PM

@Lindisfarne: It needs to happen imo. Or push Perez higher, because Mitrovic is incredibly isolated (which is a change, because he was playing way too deep previously).

The second we push into the final third we get a goal. Why? Because there was a player there to receive the second ball. Why can’t McClaren see this?

  • 193 Toonfan8 // Jan 12, 2016 at 8:40 PM

wini again our goal scorer, he’s our top goal scorer this season that tells you how poor our forwards are.

listening to the half time pundit chat and these american pundits can’t seem to understand how it’s best to head the ball.
“mbemba did have a little sight of felleni and knowing what would happen he had the time to drop his arm”

If they ate less burgers then these guys would do more headering and get an understanding of how the jump height is gained.

mbemba didn’t have any control of his body once he made that jump, that arm was going to remain raised and it’s was felleni who aimed it at his arm.

  • 305 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:27 PM

It’s so galling, we keep putting in the performances and keep saying if we continue them we’ll get points. But we’re not! All it takes now is a slight bad patch where our form dips and that’s us down, no question, and we don’t deserve to.

  • 306 toonbrother // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:27 PM

Anyone who thinks midfield creativity or goalscoring is our issue NEEDS THEIR HEAD CHECKED!

We have one of the most creative midfield in the premiership and we have decent strikers

the problem is EVERY TIME WE DO NOT PARK THE BUS TO KEEP THE SCORELINE DOWN WE END UP CONCEDING AT LEAST THREE GOALS!

Sissoko and Wijnaldum deserve bettter than a team that guarantees 3 goals per game to the opposng side!

If we continue to play like that then I have no doubt we will climb the table, the way the players responded was fantastic, I didn’t want this one to end.

I will stay with my thoughts on Dean, dismal ref, anyone else we might have won, But cannot fault the effort by our team.

    Cracking game.

  • 371 geordie157 // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:45 PM

West Ham game is huge….Carroll went off after 15mins but in Payet and Valencia we will have problems at the back.

  • 372 benjohnsen // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:45 PM

3-3 is a good result considering how the game played out. However, McClaren still hasn’t fixed our main problem. Defense. It is all over the place.

I’m not talking about single players, but how the team is organised. It’s awful to watch. If this doesn’t get fixed soon we are still going down. Do not think a single CB or left back can fix such a problem.

I know Tiote is not favorite among many here, but still, even out of form, he is one of our most important players defensively as he is great at positioning himself.

  • 373 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:46 PM

Ah it was Mbemba that was the culprit for the 2nd, just like the first.

Don’t know why he’s held in such high regard. Been at fault for just as many as Colo this season.

  • 374 sparky55 // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:47 PM

Good game…defensively found wanting yet again (god knows when Maclaren will make the necessary and obvious change) but we showed great determination in getting back in the game so brilliantly well done.

Well done lads and hopefully a turning point with better to come when the new boys get involved

BUT FOR THE SAKE OF NOT REPEATING MYSELF TOO MUCH TONIGHT…WE HAVE TO DROP COLOCINNI NOW OR IT’S GAME OVER.

  • 381 SPRINGY // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:50 PM

better in the second half…perez poor all game…but wish we could play for 90 mins!……gini man of the match kept driving forward……but final delivery by everyone espscially janmaat needs work…..perez was terrible tonight…..passing was patchy

  • 382 JDdubai // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:51 PM

Watch the 2nd goal again. The reason Colo is 2vs 1 is no-one chased back with lingard to help out. Mbemba was overtaken by miles.

If they chased back it wouldnt have been an overlap.

Not saying our defence is great as it’s not but them amount of defending we do as a team is quite high and it would be bordering on miracles if our defenders didn’t make a mistake. Thiago silva, Sergio Ramos etc all make mistakes and don’t defend as much as we do so its not fair to jump on their backs as soon as a mistake is made by our players who lets be honest are not as a good.

  • 384 lukes26 // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:51 PM

I dont think our back four have been that bad. Its the midfield that continues to not defend and give up possession

that being said, even though there were 3 goals allowed, I think newcastle defended very well until Mata and Depay came on

Congratulations to my team. Amazing comeback, twice. Congratulations lads.

Great match – made me proud to be Toon fan sitting in Warsaw watching the match with my father-in-law! A good attacking display, especially in the second half, we were all over them for long periods. Defensively we looked dodgy, and it was heart in mouth every time ManU did get forward – got Lingard’s shank and Elliot’s heroics (again) to thank for the point. Really satisfying seeing Dummett wipe the smile of VGs puckered chops at the end! LEts kick on from here.

It was a great team performance, Perez wasn’t quite at the races though.
    Great game to watch.

  • 388 Harley // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:53 PM

Stats just coming through on sky.

Coloccini had 2nd highest passes tonight on pitch, 2nd highest touches, 2nd highest pass completion and highest tackles.

Anyone saying he was poor tonight needs a trip to specsavers.

  • 389 lukes26 // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:54 PM

i genuinely hope that toonbrother is just a particularly immature child, otherwise it would be enormously sad

  • 390 manxpie // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:54 PM

Hail his head dropped massively after the crazy decision and quite right in some ways but over the season he looks a hell of a player and at “21” looks a hell of a signing
colo could defo play deep lying play maker in his elder years great performance imo

  • 391 toon kk // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:56 PM

A quality defender and a pacey proven striker required.

  • 392 JamesToon // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:57 PM

What a game, my hearts racing not gonna be able to sleep tonight. Good attacking display, build up needs to be better but that’s where Shelvey is gonna help, defending needs to be a lot better.

Thought Perez had his first poor game in a long time, maybe needs a rest?

  • 393 sparky55 // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:57 PM

we let in an average of 2 a game which means we have to score an average of 3 a game to win them.

Today even 3 wasn’t enough because a defence is so sh!te.

I don’t get why so many on here jump to the defence of the defence…as a unit they are the 3rd worst in the premiership and Colo is so old and sh!te he consistently gets caught out of position which in most cases leads to gaol against.

When you have such a weak link like Colo in defence it never recovers from the slightest mistake no matter who makes it.

He has to go and you will all soon see when he goes how the defensive unit improves.

Games like tonight is why I love football so much

  • 395 ronaldo aarons // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:58 PM

Hope dummett gets off with a bit of stick tonight. People seem to forget that as a youngster he was a cb that could play at lb. when he was in Scotland they did play him mainly at lb and we kind of stuck with it so the majority of time he has been playing out of position. He gets unfairly too much stick at times, he is limited at lb but still gives his all so I personally can never criticise him for a bad game at lb. hope he enjoys that goal.

  • 396 Tsunki // Jan 12, 2016 at 9:59 PM

Colos passing first 15 minutes was diabolical, but as the game grew he started chucking himself under trains, bug fix him we would have lost. Elliot played very well to. Dummet for me only just redeemed himself for that shocking decision to let ball bounce off him rather than let it ride and Rooney had it teed up.

Wijnaldum can’t half shift when he wants, Colback actually pretty serviceable, not unexpected given his replacements were watching. Sissoko in equal parts fantastic and diabolical. Mitrovic is not brilliant but he is a handful. Don’t think he’ll be a great goalscorer for us. Perez was strangely subdued I thought. Janmaat at fault again, nowhere near for lindgards goal at all. Tiote looked steady tonight, flashes of his old self, good and bad.

Hats off to the ref for limiting us to one penalty and getting the dubious decision award.

  • 397 SPRINGY // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:00 PM

its a point earned so cant grumble to much….but they can infuriate me sometimes by there slack passing there, there awareness of surrounding players they’ve played in this league long enough to know slack passes put ya team in the shite and same with getting caught on the ball….ano ive few times but cant believe how bad perez was tonight…looked like he had drunk a bottle of night nurse and was asleep!

  • 398 nufcursed // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:12 PM

great performance from the lads! man u didn’t deserve to draw..
still feel dummett and colback are our main weaknesses as they only use their left foot
