England Winger Turns Down Baggies – Wants Newcastle Move

10:06 am, Tuesday, January 12th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 119 Comments

There´s news today that Tottenham´s England International winger Andros Townsend has turned down a move to West Brom because he would prefer a move to Newcastle United.

The Chronicle are reporting today that Tottenham have informed Newcastle, the 24 year-old winger turned down a move to the Baggies because he wants a move to Newcastle.

Andros Townsend

Andros Townsend – wants Newcastle move

The 24-year-old does not want to go to West Brom as part of a part exchange deal that would see Saido Berahino finally join Tottenham.

If the Magpies are interested we could potentially sign Andros on loan for the rest of the season and depending on how he does – decide in the summer whether to make the deal permanent.

Sky Sports are reporting today that Newcastle are monitoring the Townsend situation, with a view to making a bid.

The Chronicle are saying that Newcastle still want Loic Remy on loan this month.

He would be a terrific loan signing for us and we already know he can do a job at Newcastle, after his successful loan spell in the 2013-2014 season when he scored 14 goals in 27 appearances.

If Newcastle can get both Andros Townsend  and Loic Remy  in on loan – in addition to permanent signings Saivet and Shelvey – it would be a good January transfer window for Newcastle – and the loan deals would help to keep the cost down.

However, we would also like to see a defender bought in this month – maybe a top left-back?

Comments welcome.

Quite a few of the bloggers on here were not lucky enough to see Keegan play for newcastle. We narrowly missed out on promotion to the old division one in his first year but easily managed it at the 2nd time of asking.

The main reasons why we didn’t make it the first time were two fold…firstly we didn’t get Beardsley till halfway through the first season and secondly it took six months before everyone else in the team got on Keegans wave length.

There was no such thing as pass, move, receive, pass, move when keegan came and the amount of times keegan threw his arms up in the air in complete and utter despair was embarrassing…we were so far off Keegans wavelength it was cringeworthy.

The reason why I’m bringing this up now is my concerns over Shelvey. Shelves comes with a bit of baggage containing several dummies. He was brought up by good coaches at Charlton and Liverpool, and has been surrounded by players that can play…not necessarily better players than we have at Newcastle, but players who are better at playing the premiership way than we are….players that press hard when defending and can pass and move QUICKLY when in possession.

The one thing we can’t seem to get right is quick fluid slick forward passing into the danger areas. I can tell you right now Shelvey is going to be throwing his arms up in the air in total despair for months and months and months to come and I’m not sure he has the right temperament do deal with how frustrating this is going to be.

Hopefully Sissoko will now be in the middle with Saivet going out on the right wing and we’ll have winji as our number 10 and Jack Colback in the holding role in the middle with Sissoko and Shelvey…but Sissoko is hopeless at quick short passing…he can run with the ball for sure and is brilliant in fact at this…but short sharp incisive passing is not his thing and neither is Jacks and neither is Winji’s.

Shelvey is going to have to be patient and very hard working…which again IMO is not his thing and we don’t have the luxury of time to make this work.

Last thread re Tiote…… sentiments entirely too mate. I would snatch their hands off.

  • 3 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:12 AM

So Saivet and Shelvey basically transforms our midfield to a standard that should allow us to be solid , keep better possession and create better chances

Townsend and Remy on loan would really transform our team would give us the pace on the counter attack that we need

    Nice one

  • 6 WWSBRD // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:14 AM

Townsend and Remy in on loan and a LB we would be pretty well set for the coming months

  • 7 croftus5678 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:15 AM

well shelvey looks certain although things have gone sour in the past.

surely with even just those 2 players we have to start winning games now and climbing the table and thats even without the striker and cb we desp need imo.

and about the lb position i’m going out o a limb and going to say i’m very happy with hairdryer and mbabu to not be that bothered about the lb position as long as macca realises that dummett is 3rd choice.

  • 8 Goldmbemba // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:16 AM

not sure about townsend yet. lack of game time concerns me. it just seems like a gamble. but hey, if he’s fit and motivated to get into england squad, and not too expensive, why not.

If we had to choose between CB and him though, we all know what the right choice would be.,

  • 9 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:16 AM

Remy or Austin would be ideal. Sell 2 of Cisse/Riviere/Gouffran

Matip or someone in that mold. Sell Williamson

I would be over the moon. We should also be looking to offload Marveaux and Obertan.

    Pass on Townsend.

If Tiote leaves I would not care.

  • 10 nut meg // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:17 AM

Where has this 8m for Tiote come from? I read 3m a few days ago & the Chinese will drive a hard bargain.IMO no chance of getting anywhere near 8m for him.

  • 11 Bambams // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:18 AM

Nice piece mate. I totally agree and I am reminded KK always said he bought players in ‘pairs’ that would complement each other.
At a recent talk in with John Bez he stated when Beardsley was signed and they began their first training session he was bewildered that Pedro’s passing was four or five yards in front of him, every time Pedro passed to him again the ball was a distance in front. Bez then realised it was not Pedro poor passing but HE was in the wrong place and that was where he should of been !
It was KK style of pure attacking football, those of us who watched those years – well I doubt it will happen again.

  • 12 sparky55 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:18 AM

if we don’t buy a centre half, we should still sack off Colo and play dummet alongside Chancel and mbabu at left back

  • 13 Reyantoon // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:19 AM

Thump – you are very right.Shelvey indeed is like Sissoko type player who can out muscle and bully players. Not only he can control the MF but also knows how to score goals and is dangerous when he goes forward. He has some astute defense exploiting passes as well, which we lack for a while. He’ll be a wonderful signing and can not wait to see him play for the team!

  • 14 Jail for Ashley // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:19 AM

Really pleased with the Shelvey signing, at last a player signed for cash with PL experience might be ok now even if Tiote leaves.
Still think it’s really bad business to get rid of Tiote while we’re in the position we’re in. This Saviet may hit the ground running or he may take time, or like Carrs last few be a total dud. If we weren’t in dire form at the bottom end of the table it would be worth taking the risk for the sake of letting him go for a little bit cheaper in the summer.
No worries, I never thought you were.

  • 15 Bambams // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:20 AM

Townsend on loan only….See what he is like before paying out millions

  • 16 lesh // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:20 AM

Interesting words in the Chronicle – ‘Lee says the club will allow him [Tiote] move away once the Shelvey deal goes through.

A player only leaves after his replacement’s signed? Never thought I’d see that. Have they finally seen sense? Maybe that’s McClaren’s influence?

  • 17 Jib // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:21 AM

Saivet and Shelvey will be introduced before KO tonight should make for a cracking atmosphere , bring on Manure we couldn’t have a better opportunity to do them .

  • 18 BandB // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:23 AM

We’ll see soon enough if the green light has been given for a spending spree.
But it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tiote and Williamson go out to keep the wage bill stable. A new top new striker may have been complicated by Cisse being crocked.
These are just speculations, not claims.
They seem to be doing what Moncur said…..taking their opportunities for what they regard as prudent and measured improvements.

  • 19 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:23 AM

    Gini cannot short pass? LOL

Mate sorry but you lost all credibility at that point. Gini is our best player by a country mile.

I admit when I say I do not know enough about Saviet to say whether he would or should get a game and where he will play if he does.

YET Sissoko in middle?? We tried last season he was awful. He is best on the right since Pardew changed his style of play.

Wijnaldum should be a our CAM if possible. If Shelvey can create and score from CDM then he is a bargain.

    Shelvey – Anita
    Sissoko – Wijnaldum – Thauvin

I maintain Thauvin should always play when Mitro is as he is our best crosser of the ball by a country mile!

Saviet I cannot comment whether he slots into the above I do not know.

Anita is given the nod as he has been our best CDM this season.

Hope all is good mate….not spoken for a while. Any more nice memorabilia flying around let me know.

re Townsend…10 million is chump change for an english international…especially if he can recapture the form that got him into the england team and his performances for england have all been good in my book…

If he scores five and makes five before the end of the season and we stay up then 10 million is pretty much for free and thats the mentality everyone at the club needs to have right now

  • 21 Ron Knee // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:26 AM

“Lee Ryder reports that the club are still interested in bringing Loic Remy on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season.”

Townsend to stunt the Berahino move to Tottenham.
Then at best we could pick up both of these guys, signing Berahino and Townsend on loan.

  • 27 tequilamag // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:33 AM

Sparky Townsend has managed a total of 5 goals and 6 assists for his entire PL career. Can`t see him chipping in with that many over less than half a season.

  • 28 hibbitt // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:34 AM

  • 29 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:34 AM

Still alot of work to be done and basically alot of players need to be moved on…

If they have learned their lesson then we should as a minimum expect a new:

    Remy (loan)

    And potentially:
    Townsend (loan)

…and then starting to move players on

  • 30 sparky55 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:34 AM

Pawl…don’t know what games you’ve been watching but Winji’s strength is running off the ball into danger areas…he’s rubbish at defensive play and doesn’t always pick the right pass because his mentality is pass then run forest run.

Don’t get me wrong…I love the guy but everything I said before was in the context of how the midfield is now going to knit together and can we play the quick passing fast breaking football everyone else is playing.

We take far too many touches and don’t find the passes giving the opposition all the time in the world to get back in position.

The only time we panic people is when sissoko runs with the ball and gets everyone back peddling and more often than not Gini has run 50 years to catch up and is in the box to receive the pass from Sissoko if it comes…but we never seem to be able to do this as a team by passing in behind to get the opposition back peddling and have people in the box at the right time to score and that’s my point.

    Just my opinion

  • 31 Bambams // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:35 AM

All well fella, all the best for the New Year.

It’s David’s anniversary in Feb so we are doing another event. Much smaller though, I will text you if anything comes up I think you may like.

Re Townsend, I wanted him last season but just want to make sure his attitude is ok and he does not just want to escape the Spuds.

Still need a CB and striker though fella.

Catch up for that ‘pint’ soon mate

  • 36 AK Malaysia // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:37 AM

    If Shelvey is confirmed…
My line up vs West Ham should be :
    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Mbambu
    Saivet Shelvey
    Sissoko Gini Colback
    de Jong
    SUBS :
Perez / Mitrovic / Thauvin …(impact attacking subs)
    Anita / Dummet / Tiote / Woodman(if there’s injury)

  • 37 BandB // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:37 AM

If he can be persuaded. Money moves mountains, as Swansea have just demonstrated.
I think wages are an ongoing hurdle. But there is room to juggle where no transfer fee is required.
I’d rather have him than Bas Dost, Austin, Bentner etc.
If Wijnaldum had a mobile player who made intelligent runs and played one-two football at pace on the break, I think he’d look the player he was in Holland.

  • 38 SuperShearer // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:39 AM

Very happy with these potential signings but one, tiny, little, small issue that has needed addressing for a while….. WE NEED A NEW CB!!!!

  • 39 bills-son // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:40 AM

    On the rare occasions that I’ve posted over the last two years on this doom laden blog I’ve made this point;

Our real big problem has never been defence. its been midfield.

Any two of Tiote, Colback and Anita – and especially Colback and Anita – offer no creativity, no goal threat and with the exception of Tiote absolutely no physical presence or aggression.

Add in Wini and Sissoko (a big lad who never tackles or puts his foot in)) and our midfield is powder puff offering little or no protection to the back four who as a result often have the oppo strolling through our midfield and swarming all over them.

A back four of Neville, Ferdinand, Terry and Cole in their prime would have conceded 50 goals a season playing behind that lot.

Saivet, who has won the third most number of tackles in the French league this season, and Shelvey are the total opposite of anything we currently have and exactly the type of aggressive, creative, goal scoring midfielders we need.

We don’t need Tiote with these two and he doesn’t want to be here. Tiote wants a last big pay day and he aint getting that at NUFC. Anywhere near the £8M quoted would be great business.

We still need a CB and in my opinion Jamnat is the worst defender of the current back four. Dummet is a far better defender than he is given credit for and I haven’t seen one winger this season take him to the cleaners.

Sorting the centre of midfield out will massively improve the defence and if we get a fast striker like Berahino we’ll see the best of Mitro as well.

  • 40 belgrade fan // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:41 AM

Sign Jetro Willems, we should use Gini to sign him, I m sure he would come here. We need LB

  • 41 will die for the toon army // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:42 AM

One might ask how the hell he ever got to play for england then. Maybe Hodgson goes to watch him play rather than get some stats from a web-site and judge him on that alone

  • 44 SA Toon // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:42 AM

“he’s a football fool but hes not a business fool.”

SD share prices are predicted to fall as low as 226, I would say differently.

Ashley knows how to cut costs, but time proves his inability to run a business and a football club. Both are nosediving.

  • 46 BandB // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:43 AM

    Is Berahino available for loan?
I also keep seeing “get Bony in on loan” mentioned.

Gotta wonder what Pardew thinks of Newcastles transfer dealings this season.
Looking like we’ll be 70-80m net spend by the end of it aswell as signing his rumoured top wish list player for his last 2 windows at Newcastle in Shelvey.
Im not debating if he was right or wrong for Newcastle etc, hes doing a great job on Palace but that’s no reflection on his time at NUFC, but surely the ego on him must be wondering what he could have achieved if the club had given him 70-80m in transfer funds and bought Gini and Shelvey…

  • 52 thebionicMAG // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:46 AM

Does this club enjoy shooting itself in the foot? We are haemorrhaging goals and yet all we want to sign is midfielders and strikers.
Either we sign experienced defenders or Colo will take us into the Championship. We don’t need coaching qualifications to predict that.

  • 53 belgrade fan // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:47 AM

Can we wait till summer, is it gamble for us??? I d sign him now, we have enough money, we have Gini, why wait till summer????

  • 54 angelswithdirtyfaces // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:47 AM

The Toon attacks in the Watford highlights were pass, move into space, lots of diagonal passing and players showed good awareness of each other etc., so I feel we’re not as far off that as a crucial part of our game as you might think.

Saivet said in his piece that he came here and was reasonably optimisitic because we were only losing games ” on the small details” – (if it was transalated accurately). Let’s hope a new CB and ST will change that now we’ve sorted the MF .

Ideally I’d like a decent LB too but that’s too much to hope for till July, as I think we’ll get Willems then rather than now.

  • 55 Reyantoon // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:48 AM

Shelveys a huge signing! Just huge. He’s been the best player on the pitch the last 2-3 times we’ve played Swansea! Premier league ready too! Plenty of league experience. Surprised he’s only 23. Always looks to pass forward first too, has a go from distance, can whip in a deadball..
Not really concerned about them not signing a centreback, don’t expect them too because Taylors back training, Colos played better recently and lets be honest Colo will be a constant at least till the end of this season.
Hoping to see Mbabu against Man Utd. Surely how well hes done when hes played has warranted a run in the side? Im hoping they took him off early against Watford because of the Man Utd game….

  • 57 will die for the toon army // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:52 AM

Elliott, Mbemba, Colo and Anita have been our better players forr most of the games we have played so that means it is nt bad.

Midfield has been the problem. Thats sorted.

Now where is Remy to hit goals?

Wasn’t at the game v Watford and can’t bear to watch them lose on the tele…but if what you’re saying is true then delighted to hear it…it’ll be interesting to see how they set up tonight…I guess it’ll be the same as v arsenal but without tiote who is now banned I guess after getting booked?

We’ll soon see how fluid we are against a good defensive team tonight

  • 59 thebionicMAG // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:55 AM

So where were our better players the last 4 games we’ve lost? Better isn’t good enough we need more defenders.

  • 60 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:55 AM

Townsend is beyond poor, he offers nothing that we don’t already have in Obertan. His crossing is non existent and he loves hammering a shot 20 yards high 15 wide at any possible opportunity. Stick with Sissoko rather than getting Townsend. If we want a winger we need to get one who can offer a regular supply to strikers, that is not Townsend, not by a long way.

  • 61 tequilamag // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:57 AM

Sparky, I think Lilo pretty much summed up what I think of Townsend.

  • 62 BandB // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:58 AM

These seem prudent and measured moves, if they come off.
But we are not alone in buying new players, so it’s not like we are stealing a march on everyone here.
Norwich are after Naismith, who could also be a good signing and one who could bring goals.
The relegation battle starts, not ends, when our signings pull on the shirt.

  • 63 nut meg // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:58 AM

    100% correct.

  • 64 Goofy // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:59 AM

Perez is our best player imho. He hounds defences better than any other striker in the prem and nicks the ball more oftenthan most. He missed a sitter against Watford, u’ll put that down to fatigue, I’d only drop him for a rest. If he’s fit he should start. I think he will yhrive with Shelvey behind him.

  • 65 corkypants // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:00 AM

Loan with a view to a permanent would be perfect for both us and Townsend. if he comes on loan and bangs a few in other teams will be sniffing around him. he needs to prove himself if he wants to make the england squad go for it!!!

  • 66 expatmag // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:02 AM

Remy and Koulibay tofinish off the window would be nice

  • 67 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:02 AM

Happy with Shelvey though, will add to our midfield. Would still prefer to keep Tiote until the summer, as there is no guarantee that Saivet will slot in immediately and Tiote is better than Colback and Anita.

Just a shame they didn’t move a bit quicker so these deals were done in time for todays game, although I still think we will win tonight. Don’t ask me why, I just have a feeling.

  • 68 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:02 AM

I agree Townsend is poor. I hope we pass on him. We have decent midfielders now if Shelvey signs, we should look to strengthen:-

Right Back (only Janmaat who plays in this position we need a young upcoming right back willing to bide his time)

    Centre Back

Left Back (although we have Mbabu, Dummett and Haidara its not urgent, but on the cheap we should look to replace one of the above or use Dummett as a CB cover)

Striker – We lack goals. Perez is to nimble for loan striker, Mitrovic is not adapting as we had hoped or atleast not yet for goals.

I think we should be looking at

    Remy or Austin

Consider it a strong window and a massive improvement at that point.

Look to get rid of Gouffran, Marv, Obertan, Riviere, Cisse like players who offer little to the game we try to play.

  • 69 BandB // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:03 AM

We had the Chelsea v Spurs under-21 game in the background on an office telly last night.
Townsend was playing, and those watching instead of working commented he was still performing like Obertan and that his set pieces were a shocking waste.

There is news in Italy in an exclusive from that Newcastle have submitted a massive bid of around £18.8M for 24 years old Napoli center-back Kalidou Koulibaly, after Newcastle had failed to bid of £12.8M for 24 years old Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini. He has played 59 times so well and settled at Napoli, that will make it more difficult for Newcastle to sign him. #NUFC #NUFCFANS

Pleased with the Saivet signing too! Aslong as he’s signed to play central midfield.
Seen a few people on here say they hope he starts wide, im guessing they are football manager fans and haven’t seen much of him.
He’s played centre mid for bout 18 months, weirdly when he played wide he picked up a lot of muscle injuries, not sure why?
As a CM he plays very similar to the Tiote of old. He hassles, harries, presses. The guy loves a tackle and loves a physical battle. Hes an absolute competitor. Hes a decent leader too and puts in the miles.
Technically speaking he’s ok. Hes similar in ball useage as Colback, he has the power to drive a bit like sissoko but doesn’t often this year, tends to hold position. He tends to run the miles for both himself and his CM partner. Hes also ok in the air. Not amazing offensively, but defensively he’s not bad aerially.
As a CM he is kind of a mix of Tiote defensively and sissoko and colback attacking wise. He’s not going to score many, or assist many. For me, his performances against liverpool (prem opposition) and against some of the better french sides suggests as a CM he is better than Colback/Anita.
As a wide player for me hes a miss. Seemed to offer what Gouffran offers. His technical ability, shooting, dribbling, crossing, incisive passing just isn’t strong enough to be a force in a more creative position.
If he plays central with Shelvey, he’s the kind of player that will give Shelvey the space to dictate play with aswell as being a voice in the middle.
I suspect it’ll be Colback ahead of him, at least at first, and I think Saivet might be the better player to be fair its not by much, they are both 7 out 10 players for me. Hes very physical so hopefully he adjusts much quicker than Thauvin, Riviere and cabella who were all less than physical in Ligue 1 to begin with!

why the hell do we want townsend

    2013/14 season 25 games 1 goal 0 assists 56 shots
    2014/15 season 17 games 2 goals 2 assists 16 shots
    2015/16 season 3 games 0 goals 0 assists 5 shots

he is no better than obertan

  • 75 Moonraker15 // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:10 AM

Things are looking up! I would prefer Loic Remy on loan; with Jonjo and Saivet as well well soon be up the table. Townsend a bonus as well.

  • 76 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:11 AM

Mbabu is a right back, we have been using him on he left, but he is a right back. I’d take Byram mind from Leeds, Leeds say he is available this window as they don’t want to lose him on a free. Leeds were interested in Willo, part ex seems a no brainer to me.

Left back, Robertson or Davies for me.

Up front we need a pacy mobile centre forward. Perez isn’t a striker, attacking mid or a wide forward, but not a striker. Austin would be a waste unless we are going to buy wingers who get the ball in on a regular basis. Austin would struggle just as Mitro has with the service provided.

Wouldn’t want Matip either, he has a touch of the Brambles, prone to clangers and lacks concentration. He’d require an organiser and talker next to him, which we don’t have at the club. I’d prefer to persevere with Colo, Mbemba and fist pumps with Mbabu and Dummet as extra cover if we brought in one full back.

  • 77 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:11 AM

Perez is wasted on a wing.

I maintain, De Jong/Perez should be paired as De Jong likes to flick balls on first time to a willing runner. He would also be a target when Perez is not.

Mitrovic/Thauvin should be paired as he is clearly dangerous in the air (maybe lacks accuracy) and I maintain Thauvin is our best crosser of the ball.

Yet we still persist with Perez behind Mitrovic who both lack real pace and Perez starts to deep to play on last man in the role. Its wasted talent.

As is Gini on the wing, he was amazing against Arsenal, literally what made us tick. The only time he should be on the wing is if De Jong is playing central to add pace/creativity around the sides of De Jong.

For me providing Shelvey can provide assists and goals from a deep role, similar to Cabaye

    Shelvey – Anita
    Sissoko – Wijnaldum – Thauvin

    Shelvey – Anita
Sissoko – De Jong – Wijnaldum

Anita starts over Saviet as he is unproven and Anita has been one of our better players this year. Anyone contesting that needs a shake.

  • 78 Spoof // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:11 AM

Shelvey undoubtedly has plenty of talent, however as with so many others that talent is in serious jeopardy due to a possible attitude problem, is a player with a poor attitude really what we need to fight off a relegation battle, I’m not sure that it is, and if Swansea use the cash received from us to get a striker which they so badly need then this signing could prove to be fatal for us.

  • 79 BandB // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:11 AM

If the defence could finally look after itself wouldn’t need two defensive midfielders standing guard on them and contributing not a lot else.

  • 80 Rotonda heights // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:12 AM

    So things are finally moving

    1) Saviet ? I think
    2) Shelvey ?I think

    Now just need:-

Berahino type forward that isn’t Berahino – yes
    Koubilaly CB- yes
Guerrero LB (wrong spelling) – yes.

    Bendtner PLEASE NO
    Townsend PLEASE NO

  • 81 Rotonda heights // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:12 AM

question marks should have come out as ticks!!

  • 82 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:13 AM

No, I wouldn’t fall out with anyone over it and everyone is entitled to their opinion. We might as well not play with Gini or a striker if we get Townsend because the ball would never go into the box….

  • 83 expatmag // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:13 AM

    does he vhave much pace

  • 84 Rotonda heights // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:14 AM

Ayew and gomis were pretty prolific before, which would indicate supply possibly has not been great since.

  • 85 Belfast // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:17 AM

    Still a negative sod Tequila.

I would take him on loan myself with option to buy like corkypants suggests.

  • 86 Rotonda heights // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:18 AM

i thought the 352 with a sweeper acctually worked pretty well.

I think an average team plays 442, a good team plays 433 and an outstanding team plays 343/352

  • 87 tequilamag // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:20 AM

Belfast, me negative. Never I am delighted we have got Ketsbaia back.

  • 88 Spoof // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:20 AM

As you say they were, Ayew from midfield was great for them and Gomis did have a really good start to the season, but are they, Gomis in particular good players or were they just on a purple patch.,

If as you suggest the supply has not been as good as it was then why the hell are we signing Shelvey lol

  • 89 jayphoto // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:21 AM

Can’t see the club going anywhere near Townsend, nor Austin. Honestly think that both were available in the summer and if we were going to sign either it would have been then, not in the over inflated land of the January window!
Newcastle get used by agents alot to drive up prices/wages to other clubs as we have a history of paying over the odds on wages! Just look at what Gouff and marveaux are on if you doubt that! I suspect Townsend and Austins agents probably are playing this game.
Can’t see us having bid 18m for Berahino either…. The guy has actually spoken out about his chairman aswell as been labelled unprofessional by a couple managers. Think he’s got talent but surely the club wouldn’t risk another Nile! Signing players that slag off their chairman isn’t really an Ashley thing either, nor is breaking a club transfer record… I think for 18m there is too much else out there. I suspect 18m would probably bring in Deeney or Ighalo who would both be better signings!
Love the Andre Gray link. He can’t play for anyone else till the summer but he’s got some great attributes.

@expatmag – Saivet? Yeah! He’s quick! Not as quick as he was, he’s built heavier than when he was young as he’s bigger built significantly now! But hes as quick as Moussa for me! Quick across the ground too, very good at chasing the ball down! Bit like a dog chasing a frisbee….

Is Koulibaly any good? Not seen him ever
Surely we’ll be absolutely screwed at the next AFCON if we sign Koulibaly as both our first choice centrebacks would leave for 5 weeks. Aswell as Saivet and Cisse (though no doubt he’ll be long gone)

  • 96 JAMSHA // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:30 AM

  • 97 Rotonda heights // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Indeed. I hope it works out but it does seem strange that a relegation rival would get rid of arguably their most creative player

  • 98 sparky55 // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Does make you wonder though what Hodgson sees in him…there must be something in there somewhere for him to be included in the english squad when he’s played so little first team football in the last year.

I’ve never seen him playing in the premiership so can’t really argue what his strengths and weakness’ actually are…I’m just going on that wonderful goal he scored for England on what I think was his debut…I thought his all round play was pretty good that night and Hodgson has always been very glowing when talking about him and has openly told him there’s a place for him in the euros should he prove his fitness and form…so there must be something there for sure and at around 8 million I don’t think he’s that much of a gamble because a) he’s english and b) he’s an england international so the downside if it doesn’t work out won’t be that significant.

Worth a punt in my book

  • 99 Belfast // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:30 AM

I never thought Swansea would entertain it Tequila. He must have really pissed them off to sell to a relegation rival.

  • 101 posada // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:32 AM

Sparky at 1. Good point well made.
Although I would say we did start to get some quick passing going in the Liverpool and Spurs games.
Villa and Everton. The conditions were poor and we could not get the same going. Also, we seemed to have no answer to the way Everton set up. To me it was 5 in midfield with pace and craft out wide.
Also, many of our players are internationals and have played at a high level for years now. Perhaps we just need what he brings in that key area of the field.
    Hope so.

  • 102 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:33 AM

Why did Liverpool sell Shelvey? Why are the Swans happy to sell him to their rivals in a relegation scrap? What are they seeing? I’m very dubious about the wisdom of this one. Yes, he’s the type of player we need. But is he the particular player we need?

  • 103 jayphoto // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:34 AM

    @ youngmagpiefromburnley –
Be surprised if Thauvin makes it here. I liked him alot in France but he never wanted to come to newcastle in the first place by most accounts. His attitude on the pitch in some games looks this way too and theres no way McClaren trusts him. He’d have had way more minutes if he did.
Reckon he’ll find himself struggling to make the bench when Riviere is fit as he can play wide aswell as when you take into account we may sign 3 or 4 players.

  • 104 JAMSHA // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:34 AM

wasnt cabella stats good? but still he turnd out shit, frankly townsend at nufc will be a diffrnt type of player for surehis better than thauvin an gobertan…he just needs to play regular

  • 105 Spoof // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:35 AM

If Saviet is to play as an anchorman which seems likely who would be the most likely to leave, we already have Anita, Colback and Tiote, having four would be a waste of a squad place, I would expect at least one, possibly two if Shelvey is to play alongside Saviet to either be sold or loaned out, the most likely to leave would be Tiote which would be a shame as for me he is the best of the three.

  • 110 tequilamag // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:38 AM

Belfast, He was getting plenty of game time till they changed manager. Who knows what happened. Now if we we can only get Bendtner over the line.

  • 111 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:38 AM

It is money wasted. Whatever Hodgson see’s it is something that the people who work with him regularly don’t deem sufficient to warrant regular starts. He is 24 now, and has started less than a season’s worth of Premier league fixtures. He would be a good signing for Villa in preparation for the Championship as that is more his level. I’ve watched him a number of times, and can’t see why anyone would want him. I predicted very quickly he would fast fall out of favour, even when the media were bigging him up.

  • 112 sparky55 // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:39 AM

I happy he’s coming…he has that fight and that angst along with a good deal of quality and ability you need in the premiership…I’m just worried about his temperament and his ability to work with players who haven’t quite got the premiership worked out just yet.

I fear that if it doesn’t go well in the first six weeks or so we’ll never see the best of him.

It does make you wonder if we are about to sign another frustrating headache, if he comes then I will back him, as you do, but I do have my doubts.

  • 117 jayphoto // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:44 AM

@Blackley – Liverpool sold him because he wanted to leave to play and had a bunch of players ahead of him that they’d spent alot of money on.
Think at Swansea, hes their most valuable asset that they can sell whilst already having players at the club that can come in and play his position. They are desperate to sign a couple of strikers.
One of the problems shelveys having at Swansea is his style doesn’t fit their philosophy that much. Hes been criticised and dropped this year because of his impatience to try and make something happen with a cutting through ball or a 30 yard effort rather than ball retention. Personally I have no problem if he comes here and has an effort or 2 from 30 yards or tries to play what the welsh press call ‘Hollywood passes’. (wales online)
Wish we had a couple more players that tried to unlock defenses.

  • 118 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:49 AM

Since Obertan signed for Newcastle he has got more assists than Townsend in his Premier league career. Obertan has played less minutes during that period than Townsend as well.

  • 119 Moonraker15 // Jan 12, 2016 at 1:35 PM

Can’t believe some of the negativity about our potential and confirmed signings. Ffs don’t some people realise how precarious our situation is? These are good players coming in who want to come and it’s refreshing that they see so much potential in our great club. Apparently, McClaren has spoken to them about their roles and this is encouraging .
If we can get Loic Remy now, I’ll be delighted.
