Genuinely think this will turn out to be a great signing if he gets his head down and works hard. Quality player on his day. Problem is he is a n0b when it aint his day

  • 2 keeleytoon // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:49 PM

Am I the only one that doesn’t really rate shelvey? I don’t know why, I just have never thought of him as that much of an out standing player. I hope he plays well though. If all goes ahead!

  • 3 Small World // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:54 PM

    Prediction for tonight.

    2 players presented to crowd
    Crowd of about 47,000
    Score 0-0 or 1-1

  • 4 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:55 PM

    No Keeleytoon Me neither
If it’s £12m +it’s far too much but he is English. Will only fund Swansea’s search for a striker & make our task that more difficult.Tiote has played his last gane – he’s off to China bringing net spend this window down to £9M Got to be more wastrels out of the door.
It is simply not addressing our underlying problem. Can’t score goals & running defence on bare bones

  • 5 JAMSHA // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:55 PM

ok townsend is at newcastle aswell…so i guess both will b announced after the man u game

  • 6 Bobbybee // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:56 PM

Springy, I’m with you all the way on that. When I’ve seen the kid at cb he’s looked the part and it’s well worth the risk of giving him a go. Problem is, would Macca want to go with two very young CB’s in a pl game? If it went wrong he’d get crucified. Might be worth giving them a half together in the next U21 match and see how it works first though. He really is a talent. The future looks rosy for the next few years with our talented youngsters gaining experience.

  • 7 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:56 PM

If Shelvey can score 5 goals, a few assists to in a whole a season from CDM that is good enough for me.

We literally have no assists or goals coming from Anita, Colback and Tiote at this time. I mean between all 3 of them they have scored a grand total of 6 goals in the PL in all their time, 7 if you count the disgraceful disallowed wordly for Tiote against City.

I mean we should have a pair of players doing that in a season surely!!!

  • 8 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:57 PM

Smallworld – Under the circumstances that would be a great result, hope your’e right but cab’t see it with all the injuries and suspensions mounting up. Tiptoe played last game off to China to help Ash balance off the books

  • 9 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:58 PM

Sorry Tiptoe should read TIOTE – my computer writes wot it wants

  • 10 richyg01 // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:58 PM

Who says Townsend is in Toon?

  • 11 SPRINGY // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:59 PM

we need to tie him down to a contract now…he’s starting to draw attention in games and if they dont snap him up some one will turn his heed

  • 12 richyg01 // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:59 PM

He has only scored 4 goals in his time at Swansea aint he?

  • 13 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 12, 2016 at 2:59 PM

I read that article yesterday. Alarm bells rang when I read Saivet had reinvented his game because of injury and loss of pace. For a team that needs pace in midfield these two will bring the opposite if that article is accurate. I can almost hear the blog in a few weeks bemoaning the lack of pace.

  • 14 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:00 PM

Hopefully its just rumors. Please lets not bother UNLESS its a free loan with a view to buy so we can see how crap he is before sending him back.

  • 15 richyg01 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:01 PM

have to say, he looks a happy lad like…

  • 16 SPRINGY // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:01 PM

soccer sauce reckon he’s passed the medical

  • 17 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:02 PM

We need a striker urgently. Makro knows that. Will Charnley and Carr deliver for him?

  • 18 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:02 PM

McLaren has seen there is flooding all over the county &so decided to flood Toon’s Mid Field. Won’t work unless he gets a proven goalscorer, & recruits a solid CB & classy hard tackling good crossing left back to bolster up our bare bones defence.
Why can they not see the shortcomings when everybody on this Blog can?

  • 19 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:03 PM

Get a top striker. Then I’ll get excited.

  • 20 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:03 PM

Blackley If we get a striker then it’s a loan merchant! Probably Crouchy

  • 21 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:04 PM

According to his wiki page he has scored 9 in two seasons. 63 PL games 9 goals.

That is roughly 1 in every 6 games. 38 games that is approx 6 goals a season if his ratio remains the same. From a CDM area that is like I said what all of our current CDM players have scored in their whole time at the club combined.

Cabaye roughly scored 4, 6 and 7 in his 2.5 seasons at the club. So if he can mimic anywhere near that form/assists then I would be over the moon.

I know nothing about Saviet. I just do not want to hype him as the last person we signed I knew nothing about and people started hyping him (and for a similar price) Riviere…… he could play all week and not score!

  • 22 ronaldo aarons // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:05 PM

I’m not a fan of Townsend but he has some good qualities a good coach could work with. Ball control at high speed, pace and directness being the main attributes. Probably why the Watford manager has recently praised him and is looking to sign him.

  • 23 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:08 PM

Where is it said that Townsend is on Tyneside?

  • 24 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:08 PM

We also need reinforcements in defence. Only other recognised full back is long term injured Haidara> other one is youth Mbabu. We have plenty of CBs but only Mbemba who is any good. Colo injured, Saylor always injured. Willo too Weak(& Wolves want to pay money for him so please let him go) & Lascelles unproven & one for the future. We need a proven leader in that position.

  • 25 jamesnufc86 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:09 PM

When Shelvey was at Liverpool I thought he was useless, absolutely diabolical actually. Then came his days at Swansea, and my thoughts completely reversed, he is exactly what we need, no more Barry back passes or Anita toe punting it up the field 70 yards away from his target, Shelvey will dictate the tempo and make things happen, finally Cabaye has been replaced, I’m buzzing, I thought he would be the player we needed 5 games into the season, I’m very hopeful that the lad will shine at the toon, he will be told he is the main man in terms of creativity, and I reckon he’s the type of lad that will thrive with 50,000 nutters cheering him on, he’s not frightened to try things, what we need, delighted

  • 26 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:10 PM

23 Well he’s never in Tottenham or where Spurs are playing!

  • 27 SA Toon // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:12 PM

I’m excited by the prospect of new blood in the squad, and Shelvey does bring a presence in the midfield. I’m not convinced he’s the answer to our problems though, but I look forward to (hopefully) being proved wrong. What is encouraging is that we seem to be landing some of our targets, and I saw a little earlier today that Townsend turned down the Baggies in favour of SJP! We clearly need some recruits and I was really concerned that no-one would be prepared to sign up in our current predicament. Now for a striker (Remy / Austen / Berahino) and maybe a classy defender and we’re all set. Oh yes, and a solid win tonight!

  • 28 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:13 PM

All this talk of a few goals from Mid field players. Yes all helps when we haven’t scored at all for over 7 hours. We need a 30 goal a season man but he’ll have to break the bank to find one

  • 29 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:14 PM

In Stuart Pearce’s words *COME ON!!!!”

  • 30 hibbitt // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:15 PM

so would townsend be a loan or a buy as a loan with an option to buy he might be worth the risk as a buy spurs will want top money some silly numbers out there which would make it a big risk………… if it was up to me i would pass

  • 31 Dennis Twice // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:15 PM

The real problem with NUFC is : WE never really know what we are getting from anyone from one week to the next – Jeckyll & Hyde in Black & White

  • 33 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:18 PM

Hib they have already stated offers over £10M – They are off their trolley!

  • 34 Bobbybee // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:19 PM

It’s not just us who realise we need a top striker – Macca said it was a priority remember? Problem is, they don’t often come up for sale in January. Berahino has turned into Mr Blobby and Austin is injured, so experienced PL strikers are at a premium right now. It cost Liverpool 35 mil for one a few years back remember? It’s difficult to get what we need right now. They might have someone lined up, who knows? I prefer to do our business quietly or we might have had serious competition for Saivet, who strikes me as a bargain. I think wait and see is the best bet, but I can’t see a proven PL striker coming up for sale this window tbh.

  • 35 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:20 PM

Only Reason we want Townsend is he’s English& we need to increase our percentage of English Players. That’s why the CF will have to be Austin, Carroll, Crouch or Roy of the Rovers

  • 36 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:21 PM

    West Lancs Geordie

We aren’t going to get 30 goals a season striker man. Hell Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal do not have that what chance do we have?

Arguably the only one who could do it in PL to day is Aguero.

Break the bank? The last person who did it cos Barca 50m from Liverpool after he was banned half a season for biting his opposing player at a world level tournament! So knock down price, I would say so aye.

I mean are you for real?

Seriously some of our fans are deluded. They must think we are Real Madrid. We are a relegation bound to at this time, no one of note wants to come to us or would want to should I say.

It is up their like with the bloke earlier saying “we have the best attack in the league, we just keep missing chances” I mean if the sentence alone was contradictory enough the stats suggest we are 3rd worst, or had it not been for the 6 goals in 1 game we would have the worst attack in the league.

  • 37 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:21 PM

hibbitt…if Townsend comes here I think it will be as a loan deal! Isn’t they all with an option to buy these days?

  • 38 rowly // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:22 PM

I think the two signings so far are exactly what we needed as a priority – forward passing midfield players. Although I think wijnaldum should have been played in the centre as he’s arguably a world class cm and we have stuck him on the left wing due to lack of options. As I know nothing about saivet I would have preferred Townsend and Shelvey as the first two signings playing Townsend on the left and Shelvey and Gini in the middle with colback.
Next in must be remy or berahino but I wouldn’t want anyone on loan as they won’t be interested in a dog fight if we are still in the mix at the end of the season.
I can see Townsend and remy coming on loan which I think will be a mistake.

  • 39 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:24 PM

Bobbybee. You are spot on. Soviet deal first since Cisse came that’s slipped under the radar. We could get AC back for half price but then again it’s the fitness issue. In all honesty I know he is getting on but I’d take Crouchie for 6 months either on loan or short term contract – would be much. At least he is deadly in 6 yard box & can hold the ball up

  • 40 hibbitt // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:25 PM

bobby you seem very impress with saivet i had never heard of him till last i have been told that he played in both games against us but i cant remember him

  • 41 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:28 PM

Watched a youtube video of Saviet, and you know I wasn’t impressed by a video.

I mean these are supposed to be highlight reels of his better moments in the 2013/14 season. I mean seriously?

He scored a couple of penalties, he scored a free kick. His crossing was awful.

I mean he looks like a donkey. It was actually an awful advert for French football if anything. Made me thankful to have Williamson at times with some of the mistakes leading to goals.

I mean seriously? I hope he turns good, but from just the clip of his supposedly highlights he looked like he had a heavy touch, couldn’t trap a ball, had little balance and he looked slow.

The only decent attribute I could see is could header a ball. I mean we need that, but not sure if it was the only thing we need from a new signing.

Last time I said this it was roughly the same opinions from the highlight reel of Riviere, the “next Henry” who cannot hit a barn door!

  • 43 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:28 PM

PawlOk 30 a season – well over the top but unless we address the most pressing issues we’ll go down & that is not the words of a pessimist it’s fact. No goals in 4 matches 1 goal in five Nil points from 9 & 1from 12.
    Those are the cold facts!

Taco…you want to throw away Townsend already? 😉

  • 47 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:32 PM

Pawl you get real we need to start scoring & fast or we down with the Mackems & the Villa. I know our football recently quite honestly has’nt been too bad but unless the likes of Mad Mitro another naive panic buy in my opinion (suppose highlighted the shortage of decent strikers) starts putting chances away we are in trouble.

  • 48 pawl250 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:33 PM

    West Lancs

1 goal in 6 is a decent stat for most CDM. I mean if you add assists you can only be happy with that contribution.

If we had 2 CDM that did that it would be 2 goals in every 6 games. Something we lack at this time.

We need a striker who can score more than 10 (Austin, Remy) and we need a midfield trio who can create chances and finish clinically. Wijnaldum is an example given he has score is it 7 in half a season?

Sissoko needs to step up to that level.

We also need a winger he can get Mitro scoring, Thauvin is arguably the only natural crosser of the ball we have. He should be playing everytime Mitro is on the pitch.

  • 49 U.S Magpie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:35 PM

I see that some have already started the bashing game. lol
Here’s the question we should be asking, would you prefer Mr Backpass playing or Shelvey looking forward trying to get our team scoring goals. Well I for one hope for the guy that gets the ball in the middle of the park and looks forward to find someone to pass to and get us attacking. He should also win more in the air in midfield than Mr Backpass. I see it as a positive signing. Now for the love of god Shelvey don’t let me down after this speech, the guys and girls on this blog can be ruthless and don’t forget statements like mine. I don’t want this coming back to Haunt Me. lol

  • 50 Small World // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:36 PM

As much as we desperately need a forward I worry about talk of Bendtner coming in. He’s one of the reasons that unfortunately kn0b and head have to be sometimes used in one sentence….

  • 51 AncientC // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:36 PM

I am assuming these signings are coming in, because McClaren wants to go back to the 4-2-3-1 he insisted on playing earlier in the season.

Shelvey is perfect to play CDM in a 4-2-3-1 the same way Arsenal use Cazorla in that role…. the only problem is that the 4-2-3-1 formation always falls flat on its face when we play it. There is also the isolated striker role to consider – Cisse will not do much to help link up play… or Mitrovic, who will link up well, but as an isolated striker lacks pace.

I am thrilled with the Shelvey signing, I just hope McClaren has got the wits to make a 4-2-3-1 work. McClaren has not won a game yet using a 4-2-3-1 formation, if I am not mistaken – and there have been many including all of preseason.

  • 52 richyg01 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:37 PM

Hope it is true that we are selling Tiote for £8M

  • 53 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:38 PM

I can understand fans being reluctant about new signings but ours never seem to hit the ground running. It’s always we have to let them bed in for a season first. Well sorry but if you pay £10/11 M as for Mitro & Thauvin who we showed are confidence in they should now start repaying by performing on the field of play. Southampton, Watford,West Ham,Leicester & Stoke have all signed players who have done just that! Why can’t we?

  • 54 SA Toon // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:45 PM

@ Small World – I absolutely agree on Bendtner. Surely we can’t seriously be considering taking on all that baggage. I’m hoping we can get Remy to come back on loan. He p*ssed me off when he welched on us last time, but he scores goals and would probably settle quickly. I think it would be a good move for him too.

  • 55 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:45 PM

80% of new yorkers that are football fans are spurs fans. THEY ALL, want him gone. Lets give thauvin a regular run in the games and PLAY HIM ON THE LEFT and see what he can do. If he doesnt produce we can go after someone new. There is no point in getting a winger when maca want play one.

  • 56 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:46 PM

Well Pawl you should get your wish. He must start Thauvin tonight to provide the amo. But Madman must put the chances away. Don’t know who the midfied minders will be with Tiote suspended Colback doubtful, Anita injured. He can’t even push up a defender with Mbabu as only back up. Perhaps he needs to think of bringing Debuchy or Henrique back in short term as cover for rest of season.
But sorry this defensive issue never ever gets addressed

  • 57 Jail for Ashley // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:48 PM

I think there’ll be a bit of a renewed buzz in the ground tonight as it’s amazing what a couple of signings does for moral. Nothing on about Tiote as they don’t normally do rumour unless it’s got legs but there is a big piece about Bentdner? Can’t see anyone paying 8M for Tiote mind, I’m opposed to him leaving but you couldn’t really blame them for not turning that kind of money down, however if he goes for 3M as opposed to 1M or 1.5M in the summer then it would be utterly pointless to sell him now rather than in the summer.

  • 58 lukes26 // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:50 PM

Ive always been impressed with Shelvey. I never understood why Liverpool let him go..

We’re going to have very good players on our RW.

Janmaat, Shelvey and Sissoko are going to be formidable. I would not want to be a LB with that trio coming towards me.

  • 59 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 3:52 PM

    Sicknotes UTD :
    Krul,Saylor Willo, Colo,Haidara,Anita,Tiote (suspended) Marvaux,Obertan Cisse & Aarons
How would this team if fit fair against Utd tonight as against the team he will have to field as he has few options?

Seven hour time difference sucks, game starts at 03 00 and bars close at 04 00 so even if I did manage to stay sober enough to watch the game it would be over at half time, just have to check the result with one eye at 04 48 🙁
