Comment #1Genuinely think this will turn out to be a great signing if he gets his head down and works hard. Quality player on his day. Problem is he is a n0b when it aint his day

Comment #2Am I the only one that doesn’t really rate shelvey? I don’t know why, I just have never thought of him as that much of an out standing player. I hope he plays well though. If all goes ahead!

If it’s £12m +it’s far too much but he is English. Will only fund Swansea’s search for a striker & make our task that more difficult.Tiote has played his last gane – he’s off to China bringing net spend this window down to £9M Got to be more wastrels out of the door.
It is simply not addressing our underlying problem. Can’t score goals & running defence on bare bones

Comment #6Springy, I’m with you all the way on that. When I’ve seen the kid at cb he’s looked the part and it’s well worth the risk of giving him a go. Problem is, would Macca want to go with two very young CB’s in a pl game? If it went wrong he’d get crucified. Might be worth giving them a half together in the next U21 match and see how it works first though. He really is a talent. The future looks rosy for the next few years with our talented youngsters gaining experience.

Comment #7If Shelvey can score 5 goals, a few assists to in a whole a season from CDM that is good enough for me.
We literally have no assists or goals coming from Anita, Colback and Tiote at this time. I mean between all 3 of them they have scored a grand total of 6 goals in the PL in all their time, 7 if you count the disgraceful disallowed wordly for Tiote against City.
I mean we should have a pair of players doing that in a season surely!!!

I read that article yesterday. Alarm bells rang when I read Saivet had reinvented his game because of injury and loss of pace. For a team that needs pace in midfield these two will bring the opposite if that article is accurate. I can almost hear the blog in a few weeks bemoaning the lack of pace.

Hopefully its just rumors. Please lets not bother UNLESS its a free loan with a view to buy so we can see how crap he is before sending him back.

Comment #18McLaren has seen there is flooding all over the county &so decided to flood Toon’s Mid Field. Won’t work unless he gets a proven goalscorer, & recruits a solid CB & classy hard tackling good crossing left back to bolster up our bare bones defence.
Why can they not see the shortcomings when everybody on this Blog can?

According to his wiki page he has scored 9 in two seasons. 63 PL games 9 goals.
That is roughly 1 in every 6 games. 38 games that is approx 6 goals a season if his ratio remains the same. From a CDM area that is like I said what all of our current CDM players have scored in their whole time at the club combined.
Cabaye roughly scored 4, 6 and 7 in his 2.5 seasons at the club. So if he can mimic anywhere near that form/assists then I would be over the moon.
I know nothing about Saviet. I just do not want to hype him as the last person we signed I knew nothing about and people started hyping him (and for a similar price) Riviere…… he could play all week and not score!

Comment #22I’m not a fan of Townsend but he has some good qualities a good coach could work with. Ball control at high speed, pace and directness being the main attributes. Probably why the Watford manager has recently praised him and is looking to sign him.

Comment #24We also need reinforcements in defence. Only other recognised full back is long term injured Haidara> other one is youth Mbabu. We have plenty of CBs but only Mbemba who is any good. Colo injured, Saylor always injured. Willo too Weak(& Wolves want to pay money for him so please let him go) & Lascelles unproven & one for the future. We need a proven leader in that position.

Comment #25When Shelvey was at Liverpool I thought he was useless, absolutely diabolical actually. Then came his days at Swansea, and my thoughts completely reversed, he is exactly what we need, no more Barry back passes or Anita toe punting it up the field 70 yards away from his target, Shelvey will dictate the tempo and make things happen, finally Cabaye has been replaced, I’m buzzing, I thought he would be the player we needed 5 games into the season, I’m very hopeful that the lad will shine at the toon, he will be told he is the main man in terms of creativity, and I reckon he’s the type of lad that will thrive with 50,000 nutters cheering him on, he’s not frightened to try things, what we need, delighted

Comment #27I’m excited by the prospect of new blood in the squad, and Shelvey does bring a presence in the midfield. I’m not convinced he’s the answer to our problems though, but I look forward to (hopefully) being proved wrong. What is encouraging is that we seem to be landing some of our targets, and I saw a little earlier today that Townsend turned down the Baggies in favour of SJP! We clearly need some recruits and I was really concerned that no-one would be prepared to sign up in our current predicament. Now for a striker (Remy / Austen / Berahino) and maybe a classy defender and we’re all set. Oh yes, and a solid win tonight!

Comment #34It’s not just us who realise we need a top striker – Macca said it was a priority remember? Problem is, they don’t often come up for sale in January. Berahino has turned into Mr Blobby and Austin is injured, so experienced PL strikers are at a premium right now. It cost Liverpool 35 mil for one a few years back remember? It’s difficult to get what we need right now. They might have someone lined up, who knows? I prefer to do our business quietly or we might have had serious competition for Saivet, who strikes me as a bargain. I think wait and see is the best bet, but I can’t see a proven PL striker coming up for sale this window tbh.

Comment #35Only Reason we want Townsend is he’s English& we need to increase our percentage of English Players. That’s why the CF will have to be Austin, Carroll, Crouch or Roy of the Rovers

We aren’t going to get 30 goals a season striker man. Hell Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal do not have that what chance do we have?
Arguably the only one who could do it in PL to day is Aguero.
Break the bank? The last person who did it cos Barca 50m from Liverpool after he was banned half a season for biting his opposing player at a world level tournament! So knock down price, I would say so aye.
I mean are you for real?
Seriously some of our fans are deluded. They must think we are Real Madrid. We are a relegation bound to at this time, no one of note wants to come to us or would want to should I say.
It is up their like with the bloke earlier saying “we have the best attack in the league, we just keep missing chances” I mean if the sentence alone was contradictory enough the stats suggest we are 3rd worst, or had it not been for the 6 goals in 1 game we would have the worst attack in the league.

Comment #38I think the two signings so far are exactly what we needed as a priority – forward passing midfield players. Although I think wijnaldum should have been played in the centre as he’s arguably a world class cm and we have stuck him on the left wing due to lack of options. As I know nothing about saivet I would have preferred Townsend and Shelvey as the first two signings playing Townsend on the left and Shelvey and Gini in the middle with colback.
Next in must be remy or berahino but I wouldn’t want anyone on loan as they won’t be interested in a dog fight if we are still in the mix at the end of the season.
I can see Townsend and remy coming on loan which I think will be a mistake.

Comment #39Bobbybee. You are spot on. Soviet deal first since Cisse came that’s slipped under the radar. We could get AC back for half price but then again it’s the fitness issue. In all honesty I know he is getting on but I’d take Crouchie for 6 months either on loan or short term contract – would be much. At least he is deadly in 6 yard box & can hold the ball up
