McClaren – It Was A Classic – We Kept Fighting

10:43 pm, Tuesday, January 12th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 127 Comments

When Gini Wijnaldum scored Newcastle’s first goal tonight it was the first time Newcastle had scored since Fabricio Coloccini scored against Aston Villa in the 1-1 draw.

It was also the first time in the last five games that we had not lost after coming back form 2-0 down and scoring a sensational equalizer from Paul Dummett on 90 minutes.

steve mcclaren man united

Steve McClaren on the touchline tonight

This is what Steve McClaren said after the game tonight:

“People said that United were boring and that we lack character – but we kept fighting until the end and we have got a goal that feels like a winner.”

“People thought it would be a 0-0 and it was a classic at 3-3. It must have been a great game for the neutral. It was a heart attack for the coaches.”

It was looking like Newcastle for the fifth game in a row would lose, but Paul Dummett’s rocket at the death was enough to get us a well-earned point.

Wonder what Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet thought after the game?

3 goals scored v one of the best defences in the league and we walk away with one lousy point!
    This man is a moron

  • 2 clinath@ed // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:47 PM

Should have managed the game better. Substititutes could have been on earlier, tired players were starting to make basic errors.

  • 3 manxpie // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:47 PM

And on dummet how can people blame him for Rooney goal if anyone’s played football and it’s hit ya like it hit him there is no way ya can control that unless ya world class or lucky and he wasn’t either
but he did stop plenty of crosses and matched marshial for pace as well as a great block and a great goal (it was going in anyways! )
In other words better than hiadara and Mbabu

Was at the match what a utter disgrace mick Dean is to the game

  • 5 optimistic prime // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:48 PM

I can’t understand people saying Mitro can’t jump or win the ball in the air.

Check out Gini’s goal, Mitro wins the ball in the air against 2 defenders and puts it on a plate. The other 2 came from him being a nuisance and fighting for the ball.

I’d be more critical of the service, it’s limited and lacking at best.
I personally think he’ll come good, but I’d prefer he had a different partner to Perez.

  • 6 clinath@ed // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:48 PM

Manx…..but what a way to redeem himself eh?

  • 7 Nufc-83 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:48 PM

Kets used to be the blog idiot coming out with stuff like we need 10 players sign lloris, kompany, aguero for 30M and sell dummet and obertan for 25M only a 5M difference lol. I think it’s easy to say toonbrother is the blog idiot now. If he actually praised when colo done well he would be ok but saying he played badly when he has been one of the best players recently is idiotic.

  • 8 Bobbybee // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:49 PM

Op, don’t think he actually won the ball, it was a Fellini knock down. But the challenge caused the error. Glad the lad scored, could see how much it meant to him.

  • 12 JamesToon // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:51 PM

Think that was mbembas and perez’s first poor games in a long time. Thought we played some nice football just about deserved to win, should of had a pen and no way was it a handball from Mbemba. Build up play was a bit too slow from Tiote when there was space to play into he goes sideways or backwards, that is where Shelvey is going to massively help. No idea though who we’re gonna start against West Ham which is gonna be a really tough game, just hope Carroll won’t be fit cos hell dominate our centre backs

  • 13 Nufc-83 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:51 PM

What u talking about Bobby you clown

  • 14 Transfer Sage // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:52 PM

    OP

It was Fellaini who knocked the ball down, good pressure from Mitrovic though.

I think he can win the long ball up but doesn’t seem to win as many crosses into the box, with headers on goal. Not sure why.

  • 15 manxpie // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:52 PM

Clinath but for cm who did we have?
That’s Wat was needed at the time as was proved for there 3rd
it just goes to show how shocking our squad is and has been under Ashley in a nutshell and how bloody stupid our recruitment has been in the same time

  • 16 clinath@ed // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:53 PM

manpixie? Was that deliberate pmsl. Sorry manxpie….

  • 17 Macas // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:53 PM

manxpie – Personally I thought Dummett had a good game, put some strong tackles in against Martial. His biggest problem is that there is usually nobody in front of him when he gets the ball as we don’t have a left winger, not sure how that is his fault!

  • 18 Bambams // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:53 PM

I like Mitrovic and hopefully this will have done him the world of good. Ok it’s only a penalty but also a great assist for Wini.
We have to remember that he is a young man new to this league and now living in the UK. That’s a lot for a young man to deal with.
Hopefully we stay up and with some better players feeding him we will see what he is capable of in the next few games and next season

  • 19 ronaldo aarons // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:54 PM

I think kets is quality lol. I enjoy his lists off players but I remember a couple times in the past everyone thought he was crazy about a couple of things but was proved right. So he’s not as crazy as he comes across?

  • 20 Nufc-83 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:54 PM

I think with mitro it is two fold. First we don’t deliver good balls to attack into the box (a lot of floated balls to nobody). Secondly I don’t think he attacks the ball that well and has a good leap on him like Carroll etc. Give him better service and he will win headers but don’t think he will really dominate.

  • 21 manxpie // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:55 PM

    Based on Wat! ?
    Seriously?
Okay I’ll reverse the question why should a CB/RB youth play instead?

  • 22 angelswithdirtyfaces // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:55 PM

    Thank you again Chris Smalling.
Glad you didn’t get that second yellow now

  • 23 geordie157 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:55 PM

Aside from the lingard goal colo played well, made some great interceptions and looked dedicated with tiote doing the same in front of him, who I thought was decent just looks a bit rusty still.

  • 24 Nufc-83 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:56 PM

Ronaldo please don’t kets has not been proven correct on anything that isn’t obvious like saying get ronaldo he is a good player.

  • 25 Macas // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:57 PM

Mitrovic was woeful tonight, the sooner we sign a proper centre forward the better. Can’t challenge for headers most the time and is slow and cumbersome. Wijnaldum was giving him loads of stick second half for being greedy and wasting a great chance.

  • 26 ronaldo aarons // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:57 PM

Dummett is surprisingly quite good when he is up against fast players. Navas and sterling come to mind. Then martial today.

Think Carroll picked up a bad injury today he’ll be out I reckon but never mind, payet will do the job for them. He’s back in form very quickly.

  • 27 Nufc-83 // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:57 PM

Manpixie because in the games he has played he has looked just as solid defensively but much better going forward??? Unless his form drops why should he not start?

  • 28 Belfast // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:58 PM

Tonnbrother men in white coats are desperately trying to find you at the moment. There’s a fire exit in the gardem.

    I’m out!

  • 29 JamesToon // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:58 PM

Think Dummett is solid defensively he just hardly offers anything going forward…apart from the odd strike!

  • 30 clinath@ed // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:59 PM

Seriously, I thought Dummet looked nervous throughout, didn’t want the ball under pressure and looked to rush his disdribution.
Perez, does not look comfortable on the left, not his best game at all.
Tiote’s lasting impression is that he slowed our game up too much, just as we were gaining momentum.
Having said all that, I thought it was a great team performance, and surely our luck has to turn soon.

  • 31 jimiley // Jan 12, 2016 at 10:59 PM

    Transfer Sage,

Mitrovic reminds me of Keith Dyson. Thats why he will not win headers. Feet glued to the ground.

One instance comes to mind was the season moyes took charge of man Utd. Nobody thought Man Utd would be as bad as they were going to be, only kets lol. Sure everyone knew they weren’t going to be as good as under fergie but nobody thought they’d be mid table, just him. He even predicted that we’d beat them at old Trafford and was right. I actually remember this clearly.

  • 34 JamesToon // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:01 PM

Can’t wait to see Jonjo and Henri play

  • 35 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:02 PM

Mitrovic has came in for some flak recently but 2 assists and a goal tonight is a good return we were finally getting players close to him in the 2nd half

I think you can see what a difference Shelvey will make I hope we are keeping Tiote till the end of the season because a middle 3 of him , Shelvey and Wijnaldum will be pretty exciting to watch

Perez looks a bit shot of confidence could do with maybe resting him for a game or 2 maybe Saviet could go left wing? Or Thauvin/Gouffran ?

Villa winning is great for us hopefully they can take some points off other teams I mean they are down but it would be good if they could help us !!

Payet and Valencia looked deadly for West Ham tonight scoring wonder goals so I think they will be hard work on Saturday

  • 36 manxpie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:02 PM

Macas exactly that’s Wat i said before plus it gives colo confidence to play his game but for some reason hiadara gets plaudits because he runs forward without creating anything and then ends up way out of position and Mbabu plays 1 good game he’s the man !!

  • 37 Ravostag // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:02 PM

We would have won that had it not been for Mike Dean. Shteve refers to United, we are United not the lot from the west. He needs educating

  • 40 jimiley // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:03 PM

    Bambams,
Thats bollocks about Mitro. He is on 50K a week and I expect a performance. He is slow and cannot jump. You cannot runner quicker or jump higher at his age. He will not be here in a year. Next striker please. Another crap Carr signing.

  • 41 clinath@ed // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:03 PM

Off to bed. It’s been a pleasure.

  • 42 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:03 PM

Yeah, I like Mitrovic as a character but he’s simply not good enough to be the striker we need. Poor scouting in my opinion. You can see he hasn’t got the pace or natural technical ability needed. He doesn’t attack the ball well enough and he is beyond woeful with the ball at his feet.

Granted he gets into decent positions and his movement isn’t bad, but then you can say the same about many League One battering rams. He reminds me a lot of Kevin Davies but poorer technically unfortunately.

It’s just one of those where I hope he would ‘come good’ as the saying goes, but just watching him you can see he just doesn’t have the ability. If he really sets his mind to it, he might be able to forge a half decent spot as a second striker or target man but i think at this level we need more.

  • 46 lochinvar // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:09 PM

Read all about it, read all about it
Mike Dean had another absolute shocker …you have to worry for his integrity? Why was Fellini on the pitch ? Etc etc
I really think the refs are behaving like idiots so they get TMO ‘a and celebrity status ….

  • 47 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:10 PM

    Geremi’s Prosthetic

Good comparison with Kevin Davies, however Davies used to be much fitter at a much older age and ran himself in to the ground week in week out. Mitrovic flits between good closing down, chasing lost causes and half-arsed jogging, with regularity. He’s not a natural athlete that’s for sure, very cumbersome and lethargic and most of the chances he misses are down to a lack of agility and ability to get his body in the correct position quickly enough. Like yourself, I definitely don’t see this great potential many others do.

Bit of a conundrum our ST position. Remy on-loan ’til the season end then review the situation is our best option right now. Think his movement and ability will elevate Wiji to even greater heights and we’ll see him making more assists.

  • 48 manxpie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:10 PM

Nufc colo has come back into form massively since dummet has come into the team
simple as that really plus dummet has scored one plus nearly broke the bar
Mbabu has played well no doubt but he’s played 2 games 1 mistake now in our position he’ll get dogs abuse
my point is dummet gets dogs abuse when he actually does his job and contributes massively in each game

  • 49 ronaldo aarons // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:12 PM

I think mitrovic will come good in time. Think it’s difficult for a 21 year old from the Belgium league to play in this league, never mind the pressure of playing for us as our main striker during a relegation battle. You can’t expect him to be the finished article, he’s a kid. I mean ozil took two years to adapt to the league, last year he was called lazy and all sorts. This is after he has actually proven himself to be a world class player and learned his trade. Mitrovic is still raw, he was raw before he joined us and just because he signs his name on a contract doesn’t mean he is suddenly the finished article. Do I believe he should be starting every week for us, no. Does he need to start every week for us, yes.

  • 50 Bambams // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:13 PM

I like Mitro, I think he will do a lot better when we have players who create more than 2-3 chances each game. You see him snatch at chances rather than let his natural talent take over.
Most strikers play better with confidence. Time will tell but that’s just my opinion.

  • 51 manxpie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:18 PM

Forgot to say as well he never has an outlet down the line and that’snot his fault

  • 52 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:19 PM

The way we hem teams in for long periods of the game with quick attacks and passing movements are great to watch! If we get a left winger in and also Shelvey in I think we could dish out a few spankings to some teams if we can pull it all together

Dummett is defending well I think if he has a pacy left winger ahead of him he would most likely not be troubled as he does well when he just has to focus on defending

  • 53 GloucesterGeordie // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:23 PM

Evening all, saw the game tonight, happy with the performance and grit shown, think we should have got all 3 points but I’ll take the 1 after being behind twice.

I was at work though and missed the start of the second half and half time talk, how did smallings yellow in the first half get taken off him? I was certain he was off when he gave the penalty away!

  • 59 Bobbybee // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:33 PM

I don’t think Macca brought Gouffran on as a straight swap – ie defensive midfielder – I think he came on in an attempt to change a dm for an am and go for it. We had nowt to lose then and needed to push on. I think Macca is taking some unfair flack otm, after all, he’s got the team playing so much better than the last two or three seasons. It’s not his fault we kept missing chances. The most natural finisher we’ve got is currently at Coventry, but would it be fair to bring him back and pile all our hopes on such young shoulders? Don’t get me wrong, having watched the kid mature through our academy and U21’s I have total confidence he would score the chances we keep missing, but I also understand the reasoning behind letting him finish this part of his education where he is. When he does return, his strengths are running the channels and we have players now who will provide him with the ammo. Until then though, we need a striker this window and we know macca is searching for one. I like the way we’ve done business so far – quietly and without fuss – so no doubt something is going on behind the scenes – let’s hope it proves fruitful. Why alert other clubs to who we’re chasing? Macca wanted three windows to build a team and I for one will give him that time. By next summer I think we might all be pleasantly surprised.

Limited options on bench which hopefully will have been improved by incoming players but does took like Tiote may be on his way if I read his and Macs hugs and smiles at end of game correctly.

  • 67 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:41 PM

    Hail

Very true, lethargic I think is the perfect description. I initially thought it was his style, a languid type who burst into action at the right moments but he bumbles about like nobodies business.

That left footed shot (cross?) that was dire was a prime example, similar to at Arsenal where he had a pocket of space to run at the defence and he took a eternity to get the ball out of his feet then subsequently miskicked it into Koscielny.

Again, it’s not to say he won’t score a few goals because his natural movement isn’t bad. But anyone who thinks he will improve in terms of his actual ability, I just can’t see it. He doesn’t have it. Would be interesting to see someone like Jon Stead of he was placed in the same team, what the difference in performance would be. I do think Mitrovic has better movement and off the ball intelligence than your average lower league target man, but technical ability wise he is certainly isn’t.

    Bobby
I agree with what you say about Armstrong. If we stay up I personally would send him out on loan again to a championship side this time, I’d rather not rush his development as like you I think he’s a special talent too. Though I do notice he struggles to score in away games in league 1 so a year in the championship will only benefit him in my eyes.

Off topic, do you mind if I call you uncle bobby bee baby from time to time? I’m not taking the mick, your name just reminds me of that character in transformers and makes me smile.

Still not a win McLaren. Get back to work. Harrumph….

  • 73 toonluvva // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:50 PM

Still can’t believe the result! After a string of 1 nil losses we go 2 down and still get a result against ManUre.

OK we still made a number of mistakes that have been picked over earlier on the blog, but tonight we showed exactly what can be achieved when the team rolls up its sleeves and fights for a result.

I know some people think that ManUre shouldn’t have been awarded a penalty. Sorry but to me Mbemba had lost his man and and replays show him clearly looking at Failaini and trying to block any header.

However, the ref missed a definite penalty to me when Janmaat burst into the area and was tripped. There was also the interesting coming together with Toney very late on too.

The important thing is to move on from the match and get 3 points from the Hammers, who apparantly will be missing a certain A Carroll.

Can’t wait to see our 2 new signings in action. Shelvey should easily displace Colback, but who will make way for Saivet?

  • 74 Bobbybee // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:50 PM

Magscar, you may well be right matey, but Saivet’s stats read wonderfully. Something like 83% successful passes, of which 91% were FORWARD passes. Compare those to Anita, Colback and Tiote and he betters all three combined! 😉 Pundits in the know are saying he could be the best bit of business in this window and we got him at a steal. Can’t blame Tiote for wanting a nice earner to end his career on and lets face it, he’s not the player we bought is he? Window ain’t shut yet and I’ve a feeling more yet to come. Remy on loan would be ideal, let’s hope it happens.

  • 75 magscar // Jan 12, 2016 at 11:51 PM

    Thump

I struggle to understand how the one sided leniency of Dean and others is accepted by Referees Assessors and pundits alike. Of course the latter are generally from the bigger clubs anyway so dont see it.

Worst comments tonight were from Howard Webb on BT Sport excusing Fellaini’s later tackles as “you know what you expect from him” as some sort of reason not to have given a second yellow.

Great result, great game by all accounts but only one point to show for it.

I must admit I had convinced myself that the January window woud have come and gone without NUFC making any purchases. WRONG!

So we have brought in Shelvey and Saivet. Shelvey I know, but I’m really in the dark over Saivet.

Still I’d like to see a strong CB come in, and of course I’d take Remy on loan like a shot, that is if he would leave London.

Roll on the ‘ammers. We need 3 points at the weekend.

Saivet is an interesting choice but is overshadowed by lack of suitability for a battle of Carr’s recent French midfielders. Hoping Mac has also run rule over him and approved the purchase as whilst I still am unsure about him (Mac) a 2cnd opinion is needed these days

  • 81 jimiley // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:01 AM

When the manager says a 5 or 10 million pound foreigner needs a season to adjust, he is telling us we have a dud. With the exception of teenagers who might need time to develop, why would a 22 or 24 year old from abroad who cost perhaps 5, 10 or 15 million need time to adjust? I would argue the opposite and say that they can make the most impact when Premier teams have not had time to assess their strengths and weaknesses eg Cisse. Good continentals perform immediately eg Cabaye and Sissoko (lazy sod). Put it another way, how many were poor in their first season and then became really good players? I accept that some of you out there will name a few players but I maintain that the vast majority who were crap in their first season stay crap. When a player is asked for time to settle, the red warning signs flash immediately.

Just looked up the #sportsdirectshame and apparently it’s a protest against the company and their zero hour contracts etc rather than Ashley and his involvement with the club, still any bad publicity for fatty is good isn’t it!

  • 83 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:02 AM

Anyone see that we are linked with Bendter?

Townsend 14mil & they won’t let him leave on loan either.

Shelvey is worth the 12mil I reckon but not Townsend.

  • 84 jimiley // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:03 AM

    Magscar,
Unsure about McLaren? Have you seen his record for the whole of 2015? How crap does it have to be? The club is now trying to buy him and itself out of trouble.

  • 85 Newcastle for alltid // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:04 AM

This kind of game leaves me with very mixed emotions. On one hand, it was a classic where we showed guts, and at times ran rampant with Manchester United. So in that sense, it was one of the rare occasions this season when I`ve been proud to support this team. But on the other hand, only 1 point out of it, at home, in a crucial stage of the season. We should have taken 3 points, we needed 3 points.

We do have these classic matches from time to time, but until we start dominating poorer sides and winning matches against them, it counts for nothing.

In short, great entertainment tonight – but it`s still a massive mountain to climb to stay in the league. I can see us stumble against West Ham on Saturday. Hopefully, I`m proven wrong.

  • 86 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:07 AM

    jimiley,

Players that were poor in first season in England:

    1. Erik Lamela
    2. David De Gea
    3. Nemanja Matic
    4. Nacho Monreal

Just some from the top of my head.

  • 87 jimiley // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:08 AM

    Alltid,
Dominating poorer sides? Which sides might they be? We won 7 games throughout 2015. Could we not be one of those poorer sides or are we just having a bad run lasting a whole season?

  • 88 jimiley // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:09 AM

    Magpie,
Ok but I was thinking in terms of Toon players.

  • 89 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:10 AM

But I think SM has done Saviet a favour by abating the pressure/expectation on him.

Look at players that came from abroad with such high expectation.

    1.Jordie Clasie
    2. Osvaldo
    3. Ramirez
    4. Afonso Alves
    5. Kramaric
    6. Inler

    So many more.

Lucky it’s only 5mil so not that big of a loss.

  • 90 GeordieTwo // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:11 AM

Who gets to sit when Shelvey comes into the lineup? Is it Shelvey for Tiote? Not sure if they play equivalent positions. More likely Colback sits?

  • 91 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:11 AM

Shelvey will be highly motivated & want to perform well to make it to Euros as he still has a chance. Townsend on the other hand I think will not make it regardless.

  • 94 magscar // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:17 AM

    Jimiley.

Never been afan of his at Boro Or England but others have posted of his problems at Derby in 2015 but prior to that he had them flying and at end of 2014 they and coincidentally Boro were the then favourites for automatic promotion from Championship. Karanka also failed but I dont blame him for Boro falling short.

I am always prepared to give a new manager a chance ( as with Dagleish,Allerdyce etc) but he has been sorely testing me from the start but I agree with many on here that there are problems in club which would cause even Mourino to struggle. My original feeling was he wouldnt be able to stand the heat and I think he has come close to considering going. Perhaps L’pool and Spurs results and fact that he would be giving up his last big job made him stall.

  • 95 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:18 AM

Too much of Mitro’s hold up and attacking play were poor. Plus he doesn’t win enough headers. However, he battled all day and caused them plenty of problems. Overall, I thought he made a big contribution. But we need someone to play off him. Gini was picking the ball up too deep. It meant we had too little threat. We need Gini and a natural goalscorer to play off Mitro. Armstrong must surely come back if we can’t get anyone else. Got to be worth a gamble. Couldn’t do worse than Perez today.

  • 98 Newcastle for alltid // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:21 AM

    jimiley:
Poorer sides in terms of placement on the table compared to “top” teams. We beat Liverpool, Spurs, drew against Man Utd. What I meant is that the team need to start using the momentum those games give them to win the games against, say, Aston Villa at home and West Bromwich away.

  • 99 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:25 AM

Must be something wrong. Tsunki’s agreed with me and I agree with him. I thought Colo had a good game. Very harsh to fault him for Lingaard’s goal. If you were being hypercritical, he should have tried to keep Rooney on the outside. I thought he should’ve been tighter to Rooney for their third but against that he played a good ball to Mitro for our first and won some good, committed tackles.

Usually but some find a job or its constraints too much. KK has walked out on us twice and England once and may have done so at least one of his other clubs if memory serves.

I dont think Mac has the Rhino hide of AP and if fans turn on him whilst club may stick with him I don’t see him riding out the storm for long.

  • 102 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:30 AM

Another good performance from Tiote. We need to keep him until the end of the season. Not sure why he was playing where he was though.

I didn’t get what Janmaat was meant to be doing. Hugging the touchline like the winger he’s not and failing as usual to deliver. Ashley Young is a quality crosser of the ball. I don’t understand it because it’s not difficult to hit a dangerous cross, yet very few players seem to be able to do it.

  • 103 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 13, 2016 at 12:34 AM

Except for Gini’s chance, I thought we were generally poor until we scored. We were set up like a dog’s breakfast. We didn’t have enough options up front. It wasn’t working and Makro seemed clueless.

Aye, nice to fight back for 2-0 down beermonkey mate. We showed some spirit there. Defensively still lots of mistakes though. Janmaat doesn’t track back well enough. He strolls back sometimes. Dummett tries hard and I was glad to see him get that third goal.

Good spirit shown tonight let’s hope its the turning point in the season we have all been waiting on. I felt that mitro was too issolated at times let’s face it he isn’t the most mobile centre forward in the world. He really needs some support up there with him someone to feed off him who can actually score goals to see him at his best. Maybe the goal will give him a bit of confidence we all have to remember he is still a young man. I rate him think he will improve as the season goes on.

  • 117 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 13, 2016 at 5:27 AM

Agree. Perez was very poor. If we are going to stick him on the left then I prefer and out and out winger. He seems lost and positional play was abysmal.

All in all I was proud of our performance but we need wins and fast. 1 point is not enough from now as we are losing ground with 17th place already.

  • 118 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 13, 2016 at 5:47 AM

Absolutely stunned that people are giving Mitro abuse based on last nights match. We created absolutely nothing for him, left him isolated for large periods and he scores a pen and is heavily involved in both of our other goals?

He missed one half chance, and that was all he had all game due to poor service from the wide areas. Absolutely baffling that people are criticising him. He was one of our most effective players last night. Man U had the second best defensive record in the Prem before last night, and Smalling and Blind could not handle Mitro.

Another example of people getting fixated on an opinion regarding a player and sticking with it regardless – see Colo and Dummet for other examples in recent weeks.

Gini, Mitro, Colo and Dummet were our best players yesterday, yet three of them are still getting abuse. Incredible.

  • 119 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:14 AM

Perez was poor again yesterday, I agree, but any right footer we play on the left is going to narrow the space and deny opportunities for Mitro. Gini was poor when he played in that role for very similar reasons.

Perez should be on the other flank or central. But Gini is better central, and Sissoko has been much improved over the last 4 or 5 games. Where does he fit in then? He doesn’t in the formation we are using at the moment.

Macca seems to have zero trust in Thauvin, so we are stuck with him there for now, unless Aarons replaces him or Macca (finally) changes system.

It was a 02.45 kick off over here and the stream was very iffy. It looked like a very decent performance.I waited up for the interviews then started reading some of the comments,I,like you couldn’t understand why Mitro was getting slaughtered by some on here.He was starved of service yet kept the Manu defence occupied by himself. He was the reason we managed to get back in the game then win & score the penalty to level the the game, very cool penalty I may add.At that point I had enough of reading the blog and went back to bed!

  • 124 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:44 AM

    JT,
Yeah, I think they are working on that, but we essentially have a trio behind Mitro who all like to play centrally, and it shows a lot of the time in our play as we narrow the pitch far too often. We need a bit more variety in there to cause different problems.

  • 125 John Tudor // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:52 AM

  • 127 magscar // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:10 AM

    Lilo

At least on the right we get some width a lot of the time with Janmatt’s overlaps with Sissoko. Problem on left is without a natural left footer who will stay on line Dummet doesn’t get forward as much and is limited in attack anyway. Aaron’s may be answer but his injury record is becoming a worry. We don’t seem to have had a good partnership on left since Enrique and Guti.

Problem may be eased with new acquisitions in midfield as Shelvey getting forward and range of passing if in a 4 2 3 1 should mean not having to always rely on width for attacks.
