Newcastle Linked With Four More Players After Shelvey

We reported earlier today that Andros Townsend had turned down a move to West Brom because he wants to join Newcastle and there seems to be interest from the Newcastle side with the Mail reporting that Steve McClaren is keen to bring the England winger to Newcastle this month.

In fact the Mail reported in late November that McClaren wanted both Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend in January, so maybe the Mail were accurate in their reporting, with Shelvey now on  Tyneside having his medical after a £12M deal has been agreed with Swansea City.

Maybe Newcastle could get Andros on loan with a potential to make the move permanent in the summer, but it’s good news the England International wants to join the Magpies.

Andros Townsend – arriving at Newcastle this month?

We also reported that Nicklas Bendtner was keen on a move to Newcastle and there’s a report in German magazine Bild that Newcastle may be interested – but he returned form the three-week winter break overweight and unfit.

But why would Newcastle want Bendtner on Tyneside when he is nowhere near the form he showed in his early years at Arsenal and has been poor at most of the clubs he has played for since then?

And the third player we are being linked with today is 24 year-old Burnley striker Andre Gray and the Wolverhampton-born Gray only signed for Burnley in August for around £6M.

Before the transfer he had played a couple of times for previous club Brentford (with two goals) before that.

Andre Gray – Burnley striker

Newcastle could sign the striker, who has 13 goals in 20 appearance so far this season for Burnley – but he cannot play for three clubs in a season.

So we could sign him, but he wouldn’t be able to help us in our relegation fight.

If we are interested in the player then maybe we could make a move for him this summer.

Finally the Chronicle is reporting that Newcastle still want to sign Loic Remy on loan for the rest of the season and he’s a proven Premier League goalscorer, who would be a great signing for us – even on loan for five months.

If Loic would come and help score the goals to save Newcastle this season – what’s wrong with that – even if we he wont sign for us full time.

And why wouldn’t we go after Charlie Austin of QPR and offer say £8M and he should be fit again early next month – so we would have the striker department covered – although that may be a bit of overkill if Papiss Cisse is soon to be fit.

If Newcastle don’t want to sign Charlie in January we should get him to sign a pre-contract agreement so he signs for us permanently in the summer on a free transfer.

We expect Papiss Cisse to leave the club this summer and it looks like once Jonjo Shelvey is in – and we have two central midfielders already signed this month – then Cheick Tiote will be allowed to leave.

What do you think?

Saivet I’m not convinced by and I think willl be another Graham Carr clanger. Shelvey is where it’s at, good range of passing and the vision to make things happen, knows how to boss a game at a relatively young age and can crack shots from outside the box with good consistency. hopefully his character will mature as he comes in to his mid-twenties.

Still, need a LB and a ST as top priorities now.

Seven hour time difference sucks, game starts at 03 00 and bars close at 04 00 so even if I did manage to stay sober enough to watch the game it would be over at half time, just have to check the result with one eye at 04 48 🙁

Well, Jail, I’m sure you’ll be able have a nice uninformed talk with your fellow casual, Jesper, when it’s all over. So there’s that.

The only pacy premier league strikers that seem to be available are berahino or gayle. I don’t think remy is available if I’m honest.

Inter have terminated Vidic’s contract. Am I the only one who thinks he could do a hell of a job for us… if only for the remainder of the season. Natural leader and can organise a defence + can score from corners. Something we’re sorely missing.

Out of those four i would take Remy on loan and take a punt on townsend. Bendtner is long past his prem best, and we have no room for another untried striker at the moment.

@YCMIT – even if just till the end of the season I think he would do wonders for our squad. He’d organise, motivate and terrify and we’re in desperate need of that in this squad.

andre grey is a realistic target and prob the best option we have tbh that we know can score in england.

bos dast is a great option that has more risk’s with it also.

but would any of these have a better chance of getting us the goals and come with less a risk than arma would do if we simply withdrew his loan deal ?

Totally agree, SS. NUFC need to forget policy for the rest of the season, and roll the dice on a few transfers and loans. They wont all fail, and like you say, Vidic surely has the qualities we need at the moment.

@ronadloAarons – fair enough. Still think given the lack of motivation from some of our players and their lack of drive he could come in and light a fire up under them. Frankly I’d be scared not to do as he said, looks like he kicks through brick walls when angry.

I still believe in Carr. His successful/failure rate is worse than most other EPL teams. This is certainly true.

However, he finds some real gems that you don’t see other clubs finding with regularity.

Cabaye, sissoko, tiote, ayoze, Ba..all were incredible bargains. I think we’ll be saying in a couple of years that haidara and mbabu were also bargains.

    People really want Vidic?

He’s been awful at Inter. He can’t handle the physical nature of the game any more and has struggled in Serie A, a much slower league. There’s no way he can handle the prem now.

Very pleased with Shelvey. I’ve hated him in the past for being able to control games against us and for having a bit of a nasty side when necessary. We desperately need someone like him for set pieces too. Still young also for that position.
On Saivet I have to feeling he is a replacement for an outbound and it looks like Tiote. I am sad at that because whilst we have seen mixed form in the last 18months, Tiote has also proven in the past that he can be at a level above Colback and our other DM options.
On Townsend, as well as cutting in from the right he can also cut in from the right. He’s pretty good at cutting in from the right too. However, it’s quite encouraging that SMc’s coaching skills actually making us a preferred choice for some players
