This Could Be Newcastle’s New Team On Saturday

6:24 pm, Wednesday, January 13th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 154 Comments

Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet are almost certain to start for Newcastle on Saturday when we are at home against an in-form West Ham United side.

It will be interesting to see what the team is with these two new signings in the line-up.

henri saivet claps crowdjonjo shelvey - smike lad

New signings Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey

Both have been told they will play in central midfield so in that case this is on like line-up with the new signings starting.

Elliot
Janmaat Mbemba Coloccini (c) Colback
Sissoko Saivet Shelvey Perez
Wijnaldum
Mitrovic

We are assuming that McClaren will use the experience of Jack Colback at left back – and that would mean Paul Dummett would drop to the bench.

That would  be unfortunate for Paul given he experienced probably his best moment in his career when he brilliantly hammered home the equalizer last night against Manchester United in the 90th minute.

If Saivet is used on the wing then maybe this is a possible starting eleven with Tiote back in central midfield and Saivet replacing young Ayoze Perez on the wing.

Elliot
Janmaat Mbemba Coloccini (c) Colback
Sissoko Tiote Shelvey Saivet
Wijnaldum
Mitrovic

We’ll have to see what the starting side is against West Ham – but with Newcastle having just gained a measly 2 points in our last five league games we must start putting some wins on the board very soon.

Comments welcome.

there is no way colback will go lb over dummett

  • 2 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:29 PM

Why on earth would Makro drop Dummett, Ed? And for Colback at left back. Holy focaccia!

  • 3 Tsunki // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:30 PM

Please no, Dummett may be numb but I’ve been looking forward to colback carrying the water bottles for ages. We’re almost there!

    P
You beat me to it. What’s Ed on?

  • 5 p // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:32 PM

my guess is that shelvey will start (likely for tiote) and saivet will be on the bench

  • 6 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:33 PM

dont think saivet or shelvey will start tbh…i think it will be the same team as last night to start

  • 7 BeeGuy // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:33 PM

I agree with p, Shelvey knows the ropes and Saivet will get a taste if things are going OK.

  • 8 MadisonToon // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:33 PM

I don’t think Dummett will be dropped. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tiote was sold by then and Colback replaced him with Dummett coming in at LB. However, I’d rather see:

    Elliot
    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Dummett
    Saivet Shelvey
    Sissoko De Jong Wijnaldum
    Mitrovic

Give Perez a break from the wing and pull De Jong back into the squad as I think his linkup play will be improved with Saivet/Shelvey providing better balls on the ground forward rather than long ones over the top that Tiote/Colo like to go for which won’t ever be SDJ’s strong suit.

Anyway, looking forward to it whatever team gets a run out.

  • 9 MadisonToon // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:35 PM

Yeah, might not be worth changing things up too much with players who have never played together. Will certainly depend on how well things go in training over the next couple of days. It would also be harsh on whoever they end up replacing considering the performance yesterday.

  • 10 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Ando is slating Mitro. Gets bossed by defenders and does no running.

  • 11 OneAlanShearer // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:37 PM

    4141 is my guess

    Elliot

    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Dummett

    Saivet

    Sissoko shelvey Wijnaldum perez

    Mitrovic

Or he will stick with colback instead of saivet at first.

  • 12 BeeGuy // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:41 PM

The proven man is Remy. Magpies are half way to relegation, and to turn that flightpath, NUFC needs someone that knows how to get it done, not someone on a learning curve.

  • 13 Oldgit1 // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:42 PM

Just heard that Derby allowed Hartlepool to keep their share of the receipts for their recent FA cup tie. There is some good in this game called football. Well done Derby

  • 14 browny1107 // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:45 PM

i doubt he will throw saivet straight in and colback at lb is an awful shout. De Jong needs to be given another chance (7 points from his 3 starts, 1 point from 4 games since) and perez looks like he needs a rest.
    i’d go for:

    elliot
    janmaat mbemba collo dummet
    shelvey tiote
    socks sdj gini
    mitro

  • 15 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:45 PM

nice touch by derby…good to hear.

  • 16 mactoon // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:49 PM

I don’t think he will play both new players. Dummett will start as left back and Shelvey will replace one of the holding midfielders. This will give us licence to take the game to the opposition instead of using 2 holding midfielders which invites the opposition to attack us and boss the midfield

  • 17 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:50 PM

What’s the thought on Cisse’s new lengthy injury scare…it seems he just doesn’t want to be sold!

  • 18 Ayozeserious // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:52 PM

    My line up would be

    Elliott
    Janmaat Colo mbemba dummett
    Sissoko shelvey saivet coldback
    Wijnaldum
    Mitrovic
Coldback on the left to cover dummett and he can move more central if needs be. West ham will be very dangerous now that payet is back from injury.

  • 21 Premiership Manager // Jan 13, 2016 at 6:56 PM

One slight problem, apart from the fact that Dummet will start at LB who in their right mind would start two new players and drop our holding midfielders who break up play and protect the back four?

Tiote is on his way out and Colback despite his knockers like Carrick at Utd quietly just gets on with the job and those who think he doesn’t make a difference need to look at results when he’s out of the team.

Anita and Colback are forming a good relationship, Shelvey gives options but he’s not a holding midfielder. MaClaren needs balance and he needs results, play has been improving steadily and it just needs a little refinement.

Shelvey may start but for me the team should be unchanged with possibly the exception of Tiote who may be on his way out. Perez needs to be played off Mitro either in a 4,3,3 with Wijnaldum or with Sisoko, Wijnaldum, Colback and Shelvey in midfield.

I’m still not convinced that Shelvey will not turn out to be another Barton, a good player but more hassle than what he is worth. the last thing we need is more disruption in the dressing room. I’d have rather paid £12m for Sigurdsson

  • 22 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:06 PM

    @Blackley and Brownlie

Yeah I like Dummett as a defender he reads the game well , gets stuck in and puts his body on the line just wish we had a left winger with serious pace so he could just win the ball and give it to the winger

Its weird but whenever Sammy and Dummett played together on the left hand side the two of them worked well together he was inconsistent but Sammy could whip a cross in !! Had about 6 assists last season which is decent considering how little game time he got

  • 24 Mister Tuff // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:12 PM

Hope the tales of Townsend are not true -even on loan we surely could do better than him.
If true my assessment of Wally Brolly will diminish even further – if he has been a party to wanting yet another second rater at the club.

  • 25 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:19 PM

Townsend is not completely useless as some are making out on here when he plays on the right wing he cuts inside and shoots all the time but for us he will be playing on the left which he could be decent

    Good parts he offers :

Rapid Pace , Work rate , Tracking back, Skill to beat 3 or 4 players , Attacking intent , Good passing and Crossing from the left , English

    Bad parts :

Injury prone , Moody , Greedy when on the right wing, High transfer fee and wages and also fell out with Pochettino !!

If we have him and Sissoko on the wings we can pin teams back either side and use Shelvey to make quick passes to either wing that has space means also means we will be rapid on the counter attack either side

I agree that Perez looks out of sorts, and I think maybe he needs a break. I would like to see De Jong get another run and move Gini out wide. Imo De Jong is a smart footballer and brings something different to the team. I also wouldn’t play 2 new players so soon after they have arrived – particularly after we played so well last night. Properly excited for Saturday!

  • 28 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:25 PM

hope thats the case lads….didnt realize he was a left footer tbh…never give it thought and if he can rain the crosses and become a supplier rather then a shooter then maybe just maybe it’ll work out

  • 29 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:28 PM

the lefthand side is a tricky position to fill and no one has looked comfortable there with exception of aarons but thats been a while….gini looks lost out on the left and wasted there imo

  • 30 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:31 PM

Abeid is starting to score again. Huge loss he was. Take a look:

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3kqhbq

We should’ve got rid of Colback and Tiote and kept Abeid. I hope Mclaren gets sacked and we resign him.

  • 31 Mister Tuff // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:32 PM

Spurs blogs are full of fans stating the Townsend is a bighead – and the major gripe repeatedly is that there is no end product.
He had no first team starts for this season and then has a bust up in public with one of the coaches.
The manager must not have given him starts for a reason (prior to bust up).
Spurs valuation is ridiculous – but I wouldn’t put it past Pefold to get him on loan – what a waste of time.

  • 32 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 7:34 PM

To be fair on Saviet hes moved to central midfield in the last 2 seasons and has been earning rave reviews ! Wins a high number of tackles and interceptions and plays in a style similar to Kante at Leicester which is what we need in the middle ! Him and Shelvey could bully most teams!

Would prefer us to get a better winger than Townsend but could just see the reaction on here if we were to get a foreign winger who struggled and Townsend was to go to someone like Watford and do well…..

Personally would prefer us to go for someone like Redmond !!

    Elliot GK
    Colo Sweeper
    Mbemba CB
    Dummett CB
    Janmaat RWB
    Mbabu LWB
    Tiote DM Or Colback DM
    Shelvey Play Maker
    Sissoko Box to Box
    Wijnaldum The Dutch Nolan 🙂
    Mitrovic CF

This would allow us flood the midfield and rain crosses into the box with Wijnaldum having freedom to just score goals and he will also track back when we dont have the ball Perez needs a break so this would provide us with the necessary team to beat West Ham

Had a run of about 10 games about 2 years ago when he was decent, apart from that he’s been woeful, worse than Obertan which is bloody unbelievable! Cant cross, cant shoot, cant pass, just cos he can run like a whippet doesn’t make him a good player.

There’s a reason Saviet has been converted in to a central midfielder and that because injuries have robbed him of his pace. The last thing we want to do is buy a player that been impressing in one position and then move him into another position and a winger with no pace will be destroyed in this league

  • 97 Toonfan8 // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:01 PM

I would like to see Saivet given a chance in the middle, he has been very good this season, he can hassle, win tackles, headers, we have been missing that from Tiote form, when we were fifth… But Saivet is better with ball on his feet… Him, Shelvey and Wijnaldum in the middle looks very promising.. We have to find someone who can play lm/lw personally would like to see Thauvin given a chance there for 3-5 matches to see what he can do in a good ballplaying team

  • 98 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:01 PM

    @Jackbutler

I agree with that which is why I suggested a 352 and taking Perez out for a few games! Saviet can always be brought on but it depends if Tiote gets sold

Just might not be the best idea to put someone straight in who is new to the league against West Ham who are a very tough team to beat at the moment and we need the win but I would not be against seeing him and Shelvey straight in just dont think Mclaren will do it !

  • 99 firebug666 // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:03 PM

I would start Saivet instead of Colback, Saivet’s stats are 4 times better than Colback and Anita’s.

Even if he was to need time to get use to the prem he’s better than what we have, and he cannot get use to the prem on the bench.

He is a very good reader of the game and can pass the ball, he’s a good header of the ball, and can score goals.

  • 100 CookyToon // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:04 PM

Saviet brought in to replace Tiote by the looks of it and Shelvey is Cabayes replacement, albeit 2 years later.

Dummets goal and Colo playing well both a gift and a curse yesterday, think that will give them reason not to stengthen those positions in Jan.

Wouldnt knock the acquistion of Townsend, sounds like he wants to play for the club and has everything to prove. Coupled with an English striker it would be nice to see players who understand the league already come in and do a job.

Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the window plays out!!

I agree with you mate, but I simply do not rate Coldback, never have either, and taking into account we are very weak in the position we may as well try and fix what is broken, it’ll all depend on what the lad shows in training

  • 102 firebug666 // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:06 PM

  • 103 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:07 PM

    @Jackbutler

Does Saviet speak English? Just wondering about instructions etc because he could maybe come in straight away but Payet will man marking job as he is that deadly

Whereas you can just say to Tiote to smash into him after 5 minutes to get the desired effect lol

  • 104 toontaff2 // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:07 PM

    3-2 to the mackems.
2 offside goals for defoe and a dodgy red.
Big brown envelope weighing down the ref.

Don’t think the language barrier will be an issue if he can’t speak English as most of our squad are bloody French 🙂

I’d prefer to see Tiote and Shelvey (there goes my anti-Coldback side again) if Saivet doesn’t start

  • 107 JackButler // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:15 PM

The games over the past two nights show why this is the best league in the world right now in terms of entertainment

thats assuming tiote has gone like

  • 110 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:22 PM

    @Jack Butler

I would always have Tiote ahead of Colback but I think Tiote might be away by the weekend if transfer rumours are to be believed !

Colback is basically a more expensive version of Perch or Guthrie does the same job when called upon but nothing special we do need guys like him in the squad but should be nowhere near first choice!! Saying that would rather him on the pitch than gutless wonders like Marveux or Obertan

  • 111 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:23 PM

Looks like that point gained last night was a great point the way the results are going!!

    Scum leading in Wales.

  • 113 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:27 PM

With Norwich, Bournemouth & Swansea, the 3 teams above us, all losing I say there is hope for Villa fans after their win.

  • 114 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:29 PM

Isn’t Colback 1 yellow card from a 2 game ban?

  • 115 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:29 PM

Ed, you should put another article with the headline:

    FAREWELL VURNON ANITA

  • 116 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:30 PM

What a difference having a pacy finisher makes Defoe has been the game changer with his movement and touches

  • 118 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:30 PM

so they said last night when they spoke about colback
he is worse than tiote for picking up yellows

  • 122 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:32 PM

    Lee Charnley,

Mate I’m sure you meant Gouffran instead of Marveaux there.

At least Guthrie can take set pieces Colback cannot though. With Shelvey coming in we finally have a proper corner & free kick taker both since Cabaye.

  • 123 lochinvar // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:36 PM

Mariner sends off Swansea player – dubious apparently on the rumours I hear
Two Defoe goals offside as officials do nothing
Trying to make up for Mike Dean getting it wrong last night ?

FA need to start investigating the Refs Club …..or at leat TMO’s

  • 124 colwell // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:36 PM

Shelvey is a great signing and hopefully so will Saivet at least gives more pace and skill in the middle. Its obvious we need a quick striker, they cause defenders most problems but I still think we are missing a trick and not strengthening the defense, 2nd worst conceded yet overlooked again?

  • 125 colwell // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:38 PM

And Chelsea are still shite 2-2 and West brom have had 6 shots on target against their 4

  • 126 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:43 PM

    beer,

Colback received 12 yellow cards whole of last season. Think he wants to surpass that record…only if it were for assists.

  • 127 will die for the toon army // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:44 PM

    NUFC
    1. No consistency
    2. We hve played well and lost
    3. We are so poor sometimes.
    4. Not sure wat games we turn up.
    5. We always a red card about to happen

I really dont know what to expect. I fear for relagation.

  • 128 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:45 PM

Don’t think SM will start Saviet either. Wasn’t his signing anyway. Probably doesn’t rate him. Say what you want about Ashley/transfer committe he is not like Abramovich though where he bought Torres & made the manager play him.

  • 129 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:45 PM

ano it’ll never happen but it would quite funny if chelsea were in a proper relegation scrap!lol

  • 130 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:46 PM

Remy unused sub again for Chelsea.

  • 131 JamesToon // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:47 PM

Bloody hell Mackems starting to pick up momentum we really need to put a run together of 3/4 straight wins to steer away from this relegation dogfight

I think it’s a bit too risky to start Saivet at the weekend, but get Jonjo in

  • 132 Magpie Season // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:47 PM

WBA equalised in 86th min. Chelsea still had 1 sub left. You would think they would throw Remy on for the last 5-6mins at least to get a winner at home.

If I were Remy I would want to leave Chelski tomorrow at the latest.

  • 133 will die for the toon army // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:50 PM

    James

Colback is starting with Colback or Tiote.

    With the same frontline.

  • 134 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:50 PM

    magpie
can only help our cause them leaving him out

  • 135 lesh // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:52 PM

Allardyce didn’t rate or see Defoe in his plans.

Defoe’s now scoring for fun and they’re now above us and picking up points

Message for Charnley – instead of relying on other teams losing, get a decent striker in smartish!!

  • 136 Mister Tuff // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:53 PM

Really do not know what some posters see in Townsend – I can only surmise it’s desperation.
If folk were aware of his history they’d get the barge pole out.
He’s been out on loan to loads of clubs – got into the Spurs first team, England call up and then has melted away again.
There is a reason why he’s not playing for the first team prior to his bust up – he was not producing the goods.
Check out his history – not at all encouraging. I would best assess him as an upgraded Obertron.

  • 137 will die for the toon army // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:53 PM

    James

Shrlvey is starting with Colback or Tiote.

    With the same frontline.

Dummett will keep his place coz he scored. Mbabu iz so unlucky he comes into the team performs then gets injured then the team get back to the playing well and we dont need any more.

Mcca is not afraid in giving kids a chance look a Toney yesterday ahead of De Jong

  • 138 Thump // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:53 PM

    @Mister Tuff: “Upgraded”?

  • 139 lesh // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:55 PM

  • 140 Belfast // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:55 PM

That was a complete master class from Giroud tonight like. Unplayable!

The turn and finish for the goal was ridiculous.

  • 141 JamesToon // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:58 PM

If Aarons/thauvin is fit I’d but one of the other in ahead of Perez who needs a rest

  • 142 Mister Tuff // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:59 PM

Thump – I hesitated in using the word ugraded -as some posters might say an upgraded Obertan – wow lets’ sign him up immediately.
My meaning was that on occasions Townsend can beat a man by dribbling – whereas Obertron cannot.

  • 143 SPRINGY // Jan 13, 2016 at 9:59 PM

    james
same mate he look knackered the other night very sluggish

  • 144 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:05 PM

Suppose all-in-all, I don’t mind the results over the past two nights with Norwich, Bournemouth and Swansea getting beat makes the bottom looking interesting. Looks like perming two from five to join Villa in Championship. Preferred draw between Mackems and Swansea but beggars can’t be choosers

  • 145 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:06 PM

Also goes to show if you have a proven Premiership goalscorer then you have a chance of staying up

  • 146 goommy // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:07 PM

Please send our dear Jack Passback to bench for god sake..

  • 147 SUTTY1978 // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:08 PM

Tuff, he’s worse than Obertan, cant quite believe it’s possible but it is. Similar to signing Thauvin, I would be less than impressed even if we got him for free.

  • 148 lochinvar // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:14 PM

Sign Defoe – that seems Logical and effective in two ways if you see the thinking !

  • 149 Our Toon // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:15 PM

Let’s not forget Swansea were down to 10 men, defoe played against 10 men for almost 60mins. Prior to that it was all Swansea, just seen the red and it was a shocking decision. I’d rather mackems won though than Swansea. We have to concentrate on winning our own games though

  • 150 juan // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Can’t believe some people would play colback and dumpett. Both woeful players. Get rid of them both

  • 151 goommy // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:19 PM

And for new defender. I prefer Niklas Süle from Hoffenheim. This kid was strong, good technic and smart player.

  • 152 Harley // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:24 PM

    Moonraker, jack butler

I was only meaning Saivet on the left while we have tiote playing that role alongside shelvey.
Once tiote is gone then Saivet can fill that role.

I don’t think Saivet will go straight in to the team in that role, I think he’ll have to wait a bit.
The reason I said play him on the left is that I can’t see him being worse than thauvin or Perez there seeing as he used to play that role.

Didn’t know i had to go that much in depth lol.

  • 153 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:26 PM

Why not take Debuchy on loan if fit

  • 154 rowly // Jan 13, 2016 at 10:55 PM

Taking into account the new signings my team against west ham would be:

    Elliot
    Janmaat mbemba colloccini dummett
    Colback Shelvey
    Sissoko wijnadum Thauvin/saivet
    Mitro

That’s because I have no idea if saivet is any good and Perez looked out of his depth v Man U. He still has a lot to prove for me.
