Get These Three Players In And Complete A Great Transfer Window

9:17 am, Thursday, January 14th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 93 Comments

Newcastle have so far brought in Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea and Henri Saivet from Bordeaux and they look like two good signings for us.

But we still need more players brought in and a winger, striker and left back could make this transfer window a great one for the club.

Raphael Guerreiro

Raphael Guerreiro – Lorient left-back

Newcastle´s defense has been a weakness for a long time and especially in central defense but with Colo and Mbemba starting to strike up a decent partnership it could be that Newcastle wait until the summer to sign a top center-back.

But we could do with bringing in a new left back this month and we have been linked for some time with 22 year-old Portuguese left back Raphael Guerreiro who plays for Lorient and has 3 full caps for Portugal.

He signed for Lorient back in 2013 from Caen and made his Ligue 1 debut in August of that year in the 1-0 away loss at Lille.

Since that time he has played 85 times for Lorient with 8 goals and is now an accomplished left back who could do well in England – and could be bought for around £8M.

Newcastle are said to be in communication with Spurs and Andros Townsend about a possible move this month.

If reports are to be believed Steve McClaren is keen to get the England intentional on Tyneside either permanently or on loan for the rest of the season.

Andros would be a  good signing for us because once he´s fully fit – he hasn´t played for the Spurs first team since October – he can start producing for Newcastle on one of the wings.

Townsend can both score goals and make goals so he would be a good signing for Newcastle

We would love to see Newcastle get Loic Remy in on loan through the end of the season even if he wont sign for us full time.

Loic would be able to produce for Newcastle almost immediately, but it may be difficult for Newcastle to persuade the French striker to come to the north-east again.

If the London press are to be believed he would prefer to remain in London, with Tottenham and Crystal Palace both reported interested in taking the player from Chelsea this month.

Loic would be a terrific second half of the season signing for Newcastle.

So those are three players – Raphael Guerreiro, Andros Townsend and Loic Remy – who could do very well for Newcastle if brought in this month.

Two other things – Charlie Austin would be a great buy right now but he does have a hamstring injury which may complicate things this month.

So maybe we wait bit get him to sign a pre-contract agreement now – and then make the deal final when he is a free agent in the summer.

And if Newcastle are going to negotiate with Lorient for Guerreiro, why not try to get Lamine Kone, who is the impressive center-back who Sunderland failed to sign recently.

He´s available for just £5M and the Ivory Coast Intentional would be a great buy for us either now or in the summer.

That´s it.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    Rotonda,
Is Guerreiro that good? Not really seen him to be honest, but I would much prefer Andrew Robertson from Hull, or Ben Davies from Spuds if we were to spend big on a full back.

As for Townsend, I’m pleased Levy doesn’t want to let him leave on loan and he wants a fortune for him. That should hopefully mean he doesn’t arrive at SJP.

  • 7 Goldmbemba // Jan 14, 2016 at 9:40 AM

supershearer, totally agree on the CB situation. I would love to get Kone if only because the mackems turned him down, and it would be great if he turned out well, bolstering our defence and helpfing to keep us up.

  • 8 Mister Tuff // Jan 14, 2016 at 9:41 AM

Ed you say Townsend can score and make goals – this is not true – must be a figment of your imagination as stats for the last couple of years would suggest the opposite is true.
You should not let your obvious admiration of this lad blind you from reality.
    Put it another way he’s a dud/knacker.

Raphael Guerreiro would be an amazing amazing signing
Because our left back is SHOCKING at defending
They need to sell the useless Haidara too

  • 11 welshgeordie9 // Jan 14, 2016 at 9:50 AM

Do we really need another winger especially if Townsend is the best they can come up with, we have got Arrons, thauvin and marveaux is still here, might as well give him another chance anyway.

  • 13 Rotonda heights // Jan 14, 2016 at 9:59 AM

    Lilo

Guerreiro is far more polished than for example Haidara or Dummet. A more intelligent cultured player with a football brain if you like, with good pace, good going forward but equally reliable defensively.

After watching Winjanum cooly put away his goal on Tuesday – would anyone play him further upfield.
ie. in the Perez position and put Shelvey in central midfield in Wiljanum position.
Wiljanum reminds me of Peter Beardsley on how he can read situations/anticipation to be in the right place at the right time

On that folically challenged theme there was a guy on here , sadly can’t remember who it was, who did a hilarious send up of SM’s hair style describing it in football terms, like ”we could sweep it to the right ” etc, etc. Guess you had to be there but it made me laugh.

Saido now and Lacazette in the summer when we’re safe. Simple ?

  • 23 Toonfan8 // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:10 AM

I think SMC will go for Berahino now, as soccer sauce predicted, and maybee Townsend…and I think that is end of our january transfer window with these two…if we stay up then in the summer they will try new lb Willems/Guerreiro and cb Koulibaly…..that would be very good team if that happens
    GK:Krul,Elliot,Darlow
    LB:Willems(Guerreiro),Haidara
    RB:Janmaat,Mbabu
    CB:Koulibaly,Mbemba,Dummett,Lascelles,Colo,S.Taylor
    CM:Shelvey,Saivet,Colback,Anita
    RM:Sissoko,Townsend
    LM:Thauvin,Aarons
    AM:Wijnaldum,De Jong
    FW:Mitrovic,Berahino,Perez,Riviere,Armstrong
HG:Krul,Elliot,Darlow,Dummett,Lascelles,Taylor,Shelvey,Colback,Aarons,Berahino,Armstrong…11 which would be very good number…
sell…Gouffran,Good,Willo,Marveaux,Cisse,Tiote……Tiote and Cisse only in the summer window

  • 24 WWSBRD // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:11 AM

Thauvin back to France on loan? Top draw stuff again for Newcastle

  • 25 Termijn // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:11 AM

I feel a striker is the main priority left for the window with Cisse out for a while. Perhaps a loan striker till the end of the season that needs games for the Euros (Remy if they let him go), it’d be some motivation for helping out in a relegation battle at least. Whats Welbecks situation at Arsenal? Coming back from an injury he might struggle for game time ahead of the Euros and offers something different to Mitro.

Another CB would be a good shout as well though only if we allow Willo to leave. Someone tall and dominant would be nice,

For LB I think we can wait till the summer window. We have Dummet, Mbabu and Haidara that can all play there which should be adequate cover for now. We should be looking at Willems/Robertson to reinforce next season.

  • 30 Pitmatic // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:20 AM

I think Townsend is a better player than many are making out. He might not be top class, and has obviously stalled at Spurs, but he was outstanding on loan at QPR three years ago, and then of course for England in the World Cup qualifiers. I might be wrong, but I thought he played more centrally with QPR, either as a no.10 or attacking midfield, so it may be that McClaren sees him in similar role. Wonderful ball carrier, with genuine pace and skill. I could imagine him having a similar impact to Ben Arfa, and probably dividing opinion in the same way; plenty of frustration, but with flashes of brilliance. £14m is too much, but he’d surely give us something we lack. A loan with an option to buy at around £10m would make sense.

  • 34 SuperShearer // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:26 AM

Thauvin has been short-changed by McClaren. He’s barely been given game-time, when he’s come off the bench he’s actually looked a bit of a live-wire. We don’t give players enough time to adapt to the league. I know that’s harder when you’re in a scrap but to send him out on loan! That seems counter intuitive to me, especially back to France.

  • 35 Toonfan8 // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:28 AM

with Shelvey, Townsend and Berahino here, we would have potentially 3 England players, every of them is still young, worth a try…

  • 36 Rotonda heights // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:35 AM

    pitmatic

mentioning townsend in the same sentence as Ben Arfa is almost sacrilege. On his day and under a manager who plays to his strengths B.A is a magician. Townsend isn’t or even close.

  • 37 AncientC // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:35 AM

I see a few believe Mitrovic did not get the assist for wijnaldum’s goal, which I can see why given the angle of some of the replays.

I was watching the game on a U.S. station which showed a clearer view and it was certainly a Mitrovic assist. Sky sports and BBC are crediting the assist to Mitrovic too.

  • 38 Munster Mag // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:36 AM

Rotunda and Charlie, completely agree with your comments re Wini. Lovely player, but our pedestrian midfield takes too much out of the ball. Shelvey looks a little overweight, so hope he doesnt get injured. I have said from the very start that Thauvin doesnt look like a good signing . He seems to lack straight line pace , tackling ability and strength. He does cross well , if given time, but no, I dont rate the guy. I dont rate SMC all that much either, but with the deficiencies in the team based on Ashley and Carrs approach, I may be harsh on him.

  • 39 Blofal // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:37 AM

Well we can thank the away supporters chants at Watford for Thauvin going back on loan to Marseille.

I said after that game that was the end of him. The kid never got a chance to adapt. Idiots. Absolute idiots.

  • 40 Pitmatic // Jan 14, 2016 at 10:37 AM

    hibbitt

He’s out of contact next summer. If they don’t get him out in January his value will only dwindle further, especially as he’d be almost certain to miss out on the Euros. Of course, someone might be desperate enough to pay the asking price, but I think the opportunity will be there to drive a hard bargain late in the window.

Thauvin is on 40k a week now either way. It is doubtful Marseille will pay those wages, so his return will have to be subsidised to the tune of 50% of his weekly pay, if not more.

I am surprised they want him back at all. He did not leave on good terms with the Marseille fans due to his form.

Very true, I feel neither player has been given the time to settle, none of our new signings have really, due to the nature of our recruitment and team set up, we expect everyone to hit the ground running when they come into the team, but at this moment in time, we are not in a good league position to give these players time on the pitch, which is a shame for them, and probably for us in the long run.

Look at Cabella as an example, was poor for us, but now hes in France he is probably the first name on the team sheet due to the number of goals and assists he has so far.

  • 71 SPRINGY // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:18 PM

  • 72 richyg01 // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:20 PM

Newcastle are now the odds-on favourites at 1/2 with Sky Bet to sign Saido Berahino in the current transfer window. You can back the striker at 9/2 to remain at West Brom for at least the rest of the season.

    then 14M for Thauvin,
probably now get cabella for only 6M, half of what we paid for him
now Thauvin on loan with us paying half his wages.

What do people actually think of Berahino?

I aint seen much of him play, and to me, his goalscoring record does not really put him in the £15-18M bracket:

    2012-13 1 App. | 0 Goals
    2013-14 35 Apps | 9 Goals
    2014-15 45 Apps | 20 Goals
    2015-16 16 Apps | 4 Goals

As for Townsend, I’m pleased Levy doesn’t want to let him leave on loan and he wants a fortune for him. That should hopefully mean he doesn’t arrive at SJP.

supershearer, totally agree on the CB situation. I would love to get Kone if only because the mackems turned him down, and it would be great if he turned out well, bolstering our defence and helpfing to keep us up.

    8 Mister Tuff // Jan 14, 2016 at 9:41 AM

Ed you say Townsend can score and make goals – this is not true – must be a figment of your imagination as stats for the last couple of years would suggest the opposite is true.
You should not let your obvious admiration of this lad blind you from reality.
    Put it another way he’s a dud/knacker.

Raphael Guerreiro would be an amazing amazing signing
Because our left back is SHOCKING at defending
They need to sell the useless Haidara too

    11 welshgeordie9 // Jan 14, 2016 at 9:50 AM

Do we really need another winger especially if Townsend is the best they can come up with, we have got Arrons, thauvin and marveaux is still here, might as well give him another chance anyway.

is there anything in that or is it paper talk

    13 Rotonda heights // Jan 14, 2016 at 9:59 AM

    Lilo

Guerreiro is far more polished than for example Haidara or Dummet. A more intelligent cultured player with a football brain if you like, with good pace, good going forward but equally reliable defensively.

We understand that behind the scenes- talks are underway between #NUFC and #WBA for Saido Berahino. Still someway off a deal happening

I believe he is being played in the Perez position in the last two games as Perez has been out wide left and gini suporting Mitro so he already plays in the position you are suggesting. If you are talking about moving him directly alongside mitro as a striker then i don’t agree as he is much better sitting in behind as he has done. For me he has been top class since we have started playing him in this position (I wonder why that is Mclaren oh yes its his natural position!!!)

There is more to our dealings with Marseille than meets the eye.

The French club has big financial problems involving the French tax authorities.

As far as the Thauvin and Cabella deals , nobody really kows the precise amounts and payment terms .

If Michy Batshuayi should turn up at SJP folks antennae should really start twitching.

  • 83 Rotonda heights // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:45 PM

Given Carr’s penchant for his french fancies maybe Ash should now be very seriously reviewing Carr’s position much more closely.

Cabella, Thauvin, Riviere, have all come for big money while we’ve missed out on other cheaper and better players while haggling over ridiculously small margins.

We hardly use or can’t get shot of Obertan, Marv and Gouffran.

Now I know we have had a succession of underwhelming managers and better ones may have got these individuals playing better but it’s not just the French. Both De Jongs haven’t worked out either.

The growing list of Carr failures is starting to overtake the fewer successes now and the ones who showed promise and potential (Abeid and Kemen) were moved out by Wally. Crazy.

  • 84 SPRINGY // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:46 PM

for me gini should be the central attacking mid of 3 in a 4-2-3-1….or 3-5-2….could be used as a second striker in a 4-4-2……but he does start a lot of attacks from deep when he picks the ball up and runs at them so we would lose that if not adopted by another player

  • 85 Rotonda heights // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:49 PM

    Jib

I really don’t get Carr’s fascination with Marseilles or at least his choice of players from there.

  • 88 Rotonda heights // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:51 PM

Ironically Michy Batshuayi may be just what we desperately need

  • 89 Jail for Ashley // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:51 PM

Really not sure about what the deals are with those two, surely we couldn’t have around 25M worth of talent out on loan, not that anyone in the world pay that for them anymore.

  • 90 SPRINGY // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:53 PM

didnt cabellas deal become permenant after so many games?

  • 91 Jib // Jan 14, 2016 at 12:53 PM

If you look at Marseilles Shirt sponsor .
InterSport was formed in Sweden (Ashley’s wife is Swedish ) and now has it’s HQ in Geneva.

    I’m thinking Rangers here !

Hey this conspiracy theory stuff is fun 😀

No I would not play him directly up-alongside Mitro slightly behind in a withdrawn no. 10 type of player. Maybe McLaren has got in mind as it looked like he has a more forward free-er role – What I have seen and his anticipation/knack/reading of running on to the ball I would play there with Shelvey dropping into central midfield with his passing ability

  • 93 Mag52 // Jan 14, 2016 at 1:02 PM

    Springy.

You’ve hit on the reason why, in any sensible set up, the manager has got to have a bigger input in the players signed.
If Thauvin, as appears likely, was purely a Carr signing (he had, so we are led to believe, tracked him for a couple of years), it’s probably the reason why he has had so little game time to date under Macca.
Had he been someone Macca had been chasing for a couple of years, I’m sure he’d have had more starts, with the extra confidence that would have given him.
I’m hoping that in this transfer window we’re going to see the manager getting a lot more say in the players we bring into the club.
