Newcastle did so well to come back from 2-0 down against Manchester United on Tuesday night and one of those two goals was an absolute gift from referee Mike Dean after just 9 minutes, when he gave a very soft penalty for a supposed Mbemba hand-ball.
It´s just a pity the referees are not made more accountable for the many mistakes they make that are so obvious after TV replays of the incidents.
Gini Wijnaldum scores great goal on Tuesday night
One of those was the penalty on Tuesday night which was an absolute gift from Dean to Manchester United.
But Newcastle came roaring back and a late screamer from local lad Paul Dummett got us a point in a 3-3 draw – in what was one of the best games seen this season in the Premier League.
We had a number of good performance on Tuesday night – here are the top three players in our Man of the Match poll.
- Georginio Wijnaldum got 54% of the vote and scored a great goal that was well set up by the next two players in our poll – captain Fabricio Coloccini and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Wijnaldum on his day seems to float with speed around the pitch and looks a great player and he always plays well against the big teams.
It was Gini´s 8th goal of the season and he remains our top goalscorer this season and we need more of those top performances from the Dutch International through the final 17 games of the season if we are to avoid relegation.
A great game from the 25 year-old who is looking like an excellent acquisition for Newcastle..
- Fabricio Coloccini (19%) has been playing well for Newcastle in the last few games and finally showing his class at center-back and the Argentine seems a lit more determined these days than he appeared at the start of the season.
He´s been on Tyneside since the summer of 2008 and knows all about what Newcastle fans expect and he put in another very good solid performance for us on Tuesday night.
Colo´s shot just before Gini scored late in the first half whistled only an inch or so over the cross-bar and it shows what a good technical player Colo is.
He´s taken a lot of criticism from fans and pundits alike this season, but is now playing more consistently.
He turns 34 a week tomorrow and he certainly has the experience that we need in the Newcastle side.
- Aleksandar Mitrovic (12%) had a good game and not only did he make that penalty look so easy to make it 2-2 with 22 minutes to play – but he also had an assist for Gini´s goal – so the 21 year-old had some good production for us against the Red Devils.
His goal and overall display should give the youngster confidence and he has said today that he is now starting to gain in confidence on Tyneside.
We certainly need goals from the Serbian – and if he can start putting the ball in the back of the net – that would help us stay in the Premier League this season.
That´s the major aim of Newcastle United – forget about finishing 8th in the league and of course as usual – we are out of both cups very early.
A good performance from the youngster on Tuesday night and he proved difficult for the Red Devils defense to handle.
