There is news coming through from Sky Sports and the Star that a deal is very close between Spurs and Newcastle for the Tyneside club to sign Andros Townsend – the 24 year-old England International winger who is keen to join Newcastle.
We reported this morning that negotiations were underway to sign Townsend, who would cost around £12M, and those talks are now said to be at an advanced stage.
Andros Townsend – close to signing for Newcastle
The Star is reporting that a deal is very close to being completed.
Steve McClaren is keen to get the England winger to Newcastle and it seems he will be successful for a second time this week in getting an experienced Premier League English International to sign for the Magpies.
On Tuesday Jonjo Shelvey signed for Newcastle from Swansea and will make his debut tomorrow against West Ham – the team he supported as a boy growing up in east London.
While the Star is reporting a deal is very close Sky Sports is reporting negotiations are underway.

Steve McClaren has talked to Andros and has already devised a plan to get him fit and ready to play for Newcastle as soon as possible, since he hasn’t played for the Tottenham first team since last October.
Like Jonjo, Townsend is keen to get games with Newcastle, because he wants to get into the England squad for the Euro 2016 tournament in France in June and if both Englishmen play well for Newcastle there’s no reason both couldn’t make the England squad.
However, that would probably mean England manager Roy Hodgson would have to make at least one long journey up to St. James’ Park to watch them play.
If Newcastle can make this deal final it would be the third deal in five days for two Englishmen and a Senegal midfielder – Henri Saivet from Bordeaux – for a combined transfer fee of around £30M.
That would be a gross transfer outlay of around £82M since the end of last season.
How much will it cost to keep us in the Premier League this season?
Once we hopefully sign Andros we still need a top striker brought in.
What do you think?

Pleased I am not the only one.
Like I say I always thought that he was decent and he has pace.
Let’s see what he can do before I judge him
Cheers

Comment #43I was originally impressed with Townsend when at QPR and his early England games but not so much since and he has for whatever reason lost his sparkle.
Wish I had more faith in Mac being able to help him discover it again as we can neither afford to waste more money on wingers nor drop points we should be looking for. Are there more signings to come?
If we are seeing Mac’s influence at play then he is going to be running out of excuses without a rapid upturn in our fortunes.

thats my thoughts about a left back…..have thought that about willems when put on twitter “flying to the future” when visiting SJP earlier this season……probs way of the mark but with hairdryer injured thought lb would be one of the main transfers unless theres already an agreement in place…..all speculation like!lol

Comment #45If your not blown away by the player just be happy that these transfers are a sign that the times are a changin’ and our manager is having a say in transfers rather than Carr.
Besides it’s refreshing to see proven English PL players coming into the team. Something we’ve sorely missed.

Comment #46I hate talking gross transfer money because it is sensationalist and misleading. Net transfer costs are what end up showing on the books and Mike Ashley will be clearing the decks of players who are costing in wages but are not up to muster in the squad. So don’t let the wool get pulled over the eyes over misleading amounts of money spent on new players at NUFC including this blog.

Comment #47Spurs have a funny habbit of massively overpricing their players. I’m afraid Townsend is not worth £12m, and I would be disappointed if we spend that much on him; he’s worth £8m at the most.
It’s ludicrous that the board thinks spending £28m on midfielders is acceptable, despite a good striker being our priority

Comment #50If, as we are assured, Carr watched Thauvin many times at Marseilles, can anyone tell me how in hell’s name he didn’t spot his team-mate Dmitri Payet, who cost less, had far better stats and has been the unqualified success in the EPL we hoped Thauvin would be?

Comment #51Is anyone else worried that if we get Townsend they may sell Sissoko? Like others have said, it seems like an awful lot of money on midfielders when we need a striker!

Comment #52So we are now going to shell out £24 million for two young EPL players who have had England call ups yet cannot command a first team place in their normal teams, one with fitness issues and the other with attitude problems. We have failed to address the LB, CB and CF positions and at a time when the midfield is starting to pull together and create chances we are going to unsettle the good players by bringing in new midfield players who arguably may not improve the side.
The one superstar winger we have signed may now go back to France on loan like Cabella who also cost in excess which could result in a £20M loss between them.
You couldn’t make it up at any other club even Freddie Shepherd was more astute. If Ashley is going to invest in the club Penfold and Car need to go and the club needs to restructure. I may be worng and Shelvey, Townsend and Saviet may turn out to be good buys but we have still yet to address the key positions and there is a significant risk.
I only hope that if we stay up there is not a fire sale with Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Perez and Mbemba being sold to fund the purchases. If we go down they’ll go anyway to balance the books.
Such are the joys of being a Newcastle supporter

Comment #53I don’t know why so many fans keep saying we need a striker we need a striker. We don’t need any more. We need creativity and I think that’s exactly what these signings are about. Daryl janmaat can’t make every one two happen.
Mitro will score when the team as a whole performs same for ayoze.
Big three games coming up and to be honest love to see who says we need a striker should we win all 3.
