In our world yes…in fat Lads world I would wager that would be a definite no

  • 3 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:07 PM

Really impressed with shelvey’s passing today he made it look so easy, gini is fantastic in the 10 role, mitro is good all round needs to learn to put his foot through the ball, sissoko looked knackered in the second half and needs to learn how to shoot. Colo had another top performance. Elliott looks a great keeper made some important saves today.

Remember Thauvin Cabella and Rivere debuts.

  • 5 Nufc-83 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:14 PM

Wwsbrd you say sissokho wanted to leave but who the big champ league team putting offers in…….nobody!!

  • 6 Mister Tuff // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:14 PM

Gini best player today followed by Shelvey.
Gini’s dribbling/ trickery is excellent. His other “trick” of suddenly slowing down and accelerating away again leaves the opposition dead as his acceleration is better than opponents.
    Overdue 3 points.

Day got better with Palace getting trounced.

  • 7 WWSBRD // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:16 PM

I don’t know mate even tubs changes his ways when we are in the deep end of poop mountain

I think Thauvin leavimg on loan will affect Townsend deal more than Sissoko

  • 8 NoahJ // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:18 PM

thauvin not even on the bench.

strange that we had aarons on the bench, yet he brought on gouffran who clearly has no future at the club; even riviere would have been a better option

  • 9 WWSBRD // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:20 PM

Who says they haven’t? Maybe they’ve enquired and we gave them a over the top asking price hence their hesitation

  • 10 Belfast // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:21 PM

Voted for Shelvey simply for that pass, sublime so it was.

The big Serbs hold up play was great but he misses far to many chances. We can’t afford to miss that many chances in our predicament. We could’ve been punished for that right at the end.

We absolutely dominated 23 shots or something like that. I reckon if Ba or Remy where playing we would’ve hammered then.

Coloccini also put in a very good performance again.

  • 11 sparky55 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:22 PM

Not sure mate…not when both are desperate to make their respective international squads for the Euros…they will both pretty much demand full playing time..can’t see either being happy pushing the other from the bench

  • 12 loonie-toon // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:25 PM

Must been noisey after game shelvey got is finger on his ears lol

  • 13 SPRINGY // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:25 PM

    evening all
great win today, but put ourselves under pressure with a bit stupidity from mbemba…which led to a very nervous half…but heres my view…
elliot……solid enough with 2-3 crucial saves if he keeps this form up krul has a problem
janmaat…..a lot better quality today a willing runner and im sure i heard a commentator say “excellent defending”at one stage, think he’s going to love having shelvey picking out his runs
mbemba…..solid enough bar his mistake, seems like he’s rushing out more..needs to pick his battles better, when to come out with the ball and when to just clear ya lines or pass…but he is young.
colo….ive had a go at him when he deserved it and praised him when deserved, today was strong a played really well motm contender… good to see
dummett…..tackled well tried to push up to get involved cant knock his performance, hope his injury is’nt to bad.
shelvey…..looked like the missing piece of the jigsaw, cool calm passing and always looking to open up the opposition….great passes for the goals….tailed off in the second half but has’nt played much apparently so can only get better.
colback…..grafted well all game and slotted into LB easily…and done a great job all game.
sissoko…..powerhouse performance with only the odd quality decision or final ball letting him down…good game.
gini…..fantastic performance linked well, pace, full of running and strong on the ball, not frightened to get stuck in great game motm.
perez….looked sharp first half after a poor display tuesday….and a fantastic finish….chased, hurried the opposition..while also showed good movement attacking…..not really in the second half should of maybe been off earlier as he looked knackered again in 2nd half.
mitro….thought he was good today…strength, hold up play, bringing others into play….his finishing needs work and could do with a bit of luck in front of goal….but at 21 wont tear him to bits…we still need a striker tho….he needs the competition.
saivet…..hard to see what he did there were a few nice touches and closing down…cant really knock the lad as he done nowt wrong.
goofy…usual goofy performance…ran alot, got stuck in without showing much….cant really knock him,he worked decent enough

  • 14 Belfast // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:28 PM

Gini was excellent as well. The difference that one player with vision made to the team was remarkable like.

I actually think Gini played better because there was somebody else in the team on the same wavelength.

  • 15 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:28 PM

Motm:Gini then Shelvey then Mitro then Colo.

Saivet looks well off the pace. Thought it was a big mistake bringing him on.

Colback is not a full back

  • 16 WWSBRD // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:28 PM

Both will get game time though, Townsend is unfit so can’t come straight in and play (plus tbf England have very few options and he already knows Roy wants him in the squad) also I don’t think Sissoko would risk a drop off in form coming from a move

We will see but I don’t think even tubs would sell Sissoko unless we were safe…come summer now that could be different

  • 17 NoahJ // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:32 PM

I thought Saivet played ok actually. He made one mistake which led to a good west ham attack, but apart from that looked very composed and made some decent challenges. He did look a little off the pace, but that is understandable.

Also, I think he was only brought on as dummett was injured (allowing colback to go to left back).

  • 18 sparky55 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:33 PM

all good points but still cant see them in the same team.

If Townsend doesn’t come then fine…but all recent stories point to him coming so lets see

  • 19 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:35 PM

I think if Townsend comes he will play on the left sissoko on the right

  • 20 Transfer Sage // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:36 PM

He’s going to have to play sometime and I don’t think there will be many games we are going to be comfortably leading where we can ease him in.

To me he looked good, one error which was dangerous but seemed to keep it simple and quiet, normally a decent sign for a defensive player.

  • 21 WWSBRD // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:36 PM

I think if Townsend comes mate it’ll be Thauvin on a flight to France that’ll make space

Townsend not play on the left at all?

  • 22 mattyNUFC // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:37 PM

colback not a fullback? well hell, he played a sight better than any of our other fullbacks save for Mbabu and Janmaat today

  • 23 Transfer Sage // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:37 PM

Not saying I want him in the team but when Gouffran moved up top for the last 5 minutes you could see he made better runs and tried to get in behind.

By no means the answer but could be an option up top as something a little different, definitely not a midfielder.

  • 24 SPRINGY // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:38 PM

ive said a few times on here.. i didnt think we would sign a left back coz i believe willems is on his way in the summer(gut feeling only)…but with dummett going off with a hamstring tweak, makes you wonder if they might now?

  • 25 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:39 PM

Just as I’m about to hit a key the submit button keeps jumping under my finger.

Colback is not a full back. His name even tells you that.

I see everyone is delighting in knocking Toonbrother. Colo has been awful this season. His positional play has been woeful. He’s one of the main reasons we’re in this mess. Yes Colo had a very good game today but he’s got a lot to make up for. He wasn’t put under quite the same pressure as usual because we took the game to them.

Mbemba had a good game but for his Bramble moment. We can’t afford such carelessness.

Great first touch from Jamnutz for the second.

Mitro was fundamental to our success today. But his finishing is woeful. Got to get a goalscorer who can play off him.

  • 26 toon22 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:39 PM

Sissoko might be a beast but he wastes too many chances and has not alot of end product.
Mitro needs time out of the team as he is just not getting the rub of the green,at the very least he needs an older striker to help him out.We seem to play Perez with him but the two dont complement each other.
Imho Townsend is a decent shout to replace Sissoko,if he flops its far less expensive then the recent French bunch of wingers.
As for a new striker why not Andre Gray.

  • 27 Average_Contents // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:40 PM

Excellent win that. Should of put the game to bed far earlier with the chances we had.

Shelveys raker for janmaat? Sublime and something we’ve sorely missed. The ball into wiji for the first was class too.

Did anyone else notice though that everytime he had a shot towards the end he patted his head? Making sure his brains still there perhaps? Or touching wood?

    Found it quite amusing.

I knew the press would make a mountain out of a molehill with regards to the coming together.

Reloaded newsnow not 5 minutes after the match had finished and it’s online.

    Absolutely pathetic.

Mitro does need to finish but he’s a bull for us at the moment and with more game time comes the experience of knowing what to do and the time and place to execute it. Hold up play was brilliant and he is getting better game by game.

All round great performance although we did drop off the second half and the intensity waned significantly allowing them back into the game.

All in all. A much needed win.

  • 28 SPRINGY // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:40 PM

i think townsend will be on the left tbh….sissoko has plenty of assists so cant see him losing his place and the left hand side has been a problem all season

  • 29 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:41 PM

Dummett is far better than Colback at LB. Their winger was crossing at will after the switch.

  • 30 Mister Tuff // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:41 PM

I think it’s true to say that Shelveys’ abilities to spray balls around gives the other players confidence to get forward and not be hesitant or think there is no point in getting forward as the ball will be misdirected.
First half was reminiscent of the KK all out attack philosophy.

  • 31 catchy in norway // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:43 PM

funny how every manager says we are in a false position..

maybe the pundits should listen to them and not be lazy and just look at tables before they judge us

  • 32 Average_Contents // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:46 PM

Forgot to say Gini my motm. Followed by Gru then Mitrovic.

Also janmaat taking that laser pass in his stride and supplying the cross for our best attacking player. Class.

  • 33 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:47 PM

Were you at the game or did you watch on tv? Saivet might have looked ok on tv. He looked off the pace and unsure from where I was sitting. I fear he’s not what we need at this moment.

  • 34 anthc // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:49 PM

Thought the lads done well today. If I was been picky mbembas distribution was sometimes wayward and perez doesn’t seem himself of late. Great goal but just seemed a little off. All this talk of a bigger club may be playing with his mind when he’s far from a big side player at the moment.
Thought colo was great too, should keep a few on here quiet and mitrovic although should’ve scored worked his socks off. Gini fantastic think shelvey will bring the best out of him although could be a bad thing as he won’t be here long! All in all 3pts was what was important but the performance was a bonus.

  • 35 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:50 PM

Sissoko had no luck but great grafting from him.

  • 36 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:51 PM

Saivet looked nervous he did seem better as the game went on done some good interceptions couple of games he will look better.

  • 37 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:54 PM

Sissoko was dead on his feet with half an hour to go, he drifts out of the game far to much and has a heavy touch every time he’s on a run, not good one on one with the ball st his feet he’s great when the ball is put ahead of him for him to run onto.

  • 38 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 16, 2016 at 8:56 PM

Totally agree with you on Perez he seems to be holding onto the ball to much and gives it away far to easy think he needs a break.

  • 39 Belfast // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:01 PM

Well for me it was a shoulder definitely not an elbow, but wouldn’t surprise me if the kernts banned him.

It was only the reaction of Valencia that drew attention to it.

  • 40 sparky55 // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:06 PM

Thauvin’s defo gone fact not so sure he ever turned up to be honest so not even in my thinking.

Townsend is right wing orientated…I admit the thought of townsend on the left and sissoko on the right sounds mouth watering but you can just imagine the holes they’d leave behind!

Whoever owns the right wing will switch over to the left now and again whenever it suits…I think two out and out wingers would cause us defensive issues all day long.

One or the other I think

  • 41 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:07 PM

The game passed Saivet by – that often happens to players on their first time in the PL.

He didn’t give up though , and will come good I’m sure.

It is not a case of fitness or physical speed it’s thinking time.

You cannot put your foot on the ball and then think “what am I going to do ?”. It has to be all one fluid motion ala Shelvey.

Henri will learn soon enough I’m sure.

In Steve (and his coaching team ) I trust.

  • 42 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:11 PM

    You don’t understand the system.
    It’s not like Rugby
Players cannot be cited if the ref saw the incident.
Swarbrick not only saw it , but talked to both of them with both the captains .
Therefore end of – simples 😎

  • 43 beermonkey // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:12 PM

have to say quite enjoyed the match I was a bit nervy at the end though
west brom next I think on the last 2 performances its nearly a winnable game

imo sissoko wont go this window he wants champs league and wont risk bench warming and miss out the euros
on townsend I have only ever seen him on the right but its been mentioned on here he is left footed when I looked it just said left and right given the way he cuts inside when out on the right I would say he could well be left footed so I think the plan is to deploy on the left

any news on the townsend deal

  • 44 lesh // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:16 PM

A minor incident with Shelvey and Valencia and the press are all over it, presumably keen fir the FA to get involved.

Yet Fellani consistently fouls and tackles late yet not a squeak.

If this does go before the FA, a plank of our case has got to be why it has been blown out of all proportion. If Jonjo had committed a bad foul yes, but fir hell’s sake.

  • 45 Transfer Sage // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:18 PM

Just TV for me, guess you’ll have gotten a better view of how he did, see much more when you’re there.

Hopefully it’s nerves and he can adapt quickly. Unfortunately with Tiote off, Anita injured and Colback having to drop into left back we didn’t have too many options.

  • 46 Pitmatic // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:18 PM

Only downside for me today was that Saivet looked poor when he came on. Slow, indecisive, awkward in posession and easily turned. To be fair, he improved a bit when he settled down, but he didn’t look like the heir to Tiote on that evidence.

  • 47 Belfast // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:20 PM

I don’t think the referee seen the actual incident Jib. He only got involved after the handbags afterwards.

  • 48 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:21 PM

I agree with Pitmatic on Saivet. He needs to hit the ground running.

  • 51 WWSBRD // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:30 PM

It’s possible but only time will tell, I just don’t see Sissoko leaving this window Summer he will have his agent pushing for a move again but atm he is keeping himself quiet and I will take that

I do think Townsend could be our new LW player though with Perez getting some earned rest

  • 52 NYMAG // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:33 PM

Really impressive performance today, we completely blew them away in the first 20-30 minutes and Shelvey was at the heart of most of it.

Shelvey has done the job DeJong should be doing all along.

Mitrovic worked his socks off, you can tell he’s low on confidence and he’s taking a few seconds too long to set himself instead of hitting it early. I think the goals will come but he’s a player who will thrive on crosses so we need to supply him.

  • 53 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:34 PM

Just looked at the table and we have half the points of the top three teams.

But there’s no way they’re all twice as good as us are they lads!!!!!!
    🙂 🙂

Can see us climbing the league as soon as we shore up our defence because going forward we’re pretty damn good (except that all elusive finish) and once we get Mitro scoring goals and a better CB than Captain Colo I can see us being comfortable by April.

  • 58 SPRINGY // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:46 PM

  • 69 OneAlanShearer // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:59 PM

I knew shelvey would be perfect for us. He will outshine cabaye. I think townsend could also have a big effect on the side if we can get him in.

One thing though we simply must get a left back in. Willems or jonas hector. We are seriously short at the back.

I was concerned we’d miss out on the strikers available if we didn’t strike quickly. We have to get a top quality striker in during this window. Both lacazette and Ben yedder not available until the summer. Bas dost and carroll injured. Austin sold. If we are going to sign a striker now it’s likely to be someone we are yet to be linked with.

I think they are holding off signing a new cb to replace colo with him in the summer. Colo is having an Indian summer right now, I hope he keeps it up.

I hope we refuse to sell Wijnaldum in the summer and build a proper competitive team to challenge for honours. We have some very talented players and we closed a major gsp signing shelvey. He takes the pressure off the defence by passing forward to accurately and often. Plus instead of having to rely on sissoko running everything we can finally bring in the other forwards which pushes the opposition back.

  • 70 cyprus // Jan 16, 2016 at 9:59 PM

  • 77 cyprus // Jan 16, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Hard to single out anyone really. Shelvey had a brilliant debut. Elliott made a couple of great saves. Janmaat has been incredible lately, back to his best. Colo has been an ideal CB, probably the best CB in the PL last two games. Colback: did he put a foot wrong. Excellent in both positions. Wini: I said it, he plays well, we win, not, we lose. Sissoko is a monster, terrifies the opposition with his surges. Mitrovic tried and tried. And, dare I say it, is the real Perez back? This was a top 4 performance. Long may it last.

  • 78 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 10:25 PM

Not writing him off. J ust saying he was off the pace and showed nothing. It’s a first impression. No more. Looks like the sort who might need a season to get used to it. Hope not.

  • 79 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 10:28 PM

Notice Colo hasn’t faced a big centre forward the last couple of games.

  • 80 Laurent Robert 32 // Jan 16, 2016 at 10:30 PM

I really enjoyed the first half. Great to see them pressing and having a genuine enthusiasm to go forward in numbers. Equally, sitting back in the second half was frustrating. Gini, Shelvey, and Colo had good games I thought.

Fantastic pass from Shelvey to DJ. He’s a good all round midfielder and great to have a non-dm having the ball when it’s squared near the 18 yard box. It increases the attacking potential.

More of the pressing needed, like the first half. Played our best stuff that way.

  • 81 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 16, 2016 at 10:32 PM

Perez was poor against Man Utd and wasn’t great by any means today. I’d have subbed him after 60. Also, he’s got no left foot. That’s why he’ll never get many goals.

  • 82 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 16, 2016 at 10:36 PM

Perez had a good spell for about 15mins then was invisible after that and was very poor on Tuesday if Townsend comes in then Perez will be on the bench.

‘Fans’ having a go at Saivet?

No surprise there – some have got to have somebody to get at.

It’s pointless, it’ll not do him any good. He’s a newcmer and’ll be keen to know what fans thought of him and assuming he’ll be looking on blogs, he’ll be disappointed to see the negatives.

A question for his critics: You do want him to do well don’t you?

@Belfast: That’s what I was thinking but, honestly, it’s the FA. who knows what those sods will do? Wouldn’t surprise me if they did ban him tbh.

I have to say the first half an hour is the most enjoyable period of a home match I’ve sat through for a long time probably since going 2 up against Chelsea. If we had scored a third when we were on top then I think we would have battered them 5 or 6 nil. However second half some out frailties came back and I think Shelvey tired probably due to lack of games. However apart from Mbemba’s clanger we defended well and Colo was immense despite what Toonbrother says 🙂

    Lesh @83
    Give over lad.

  • 88 Thump // Jan 16, 2016 at 10:38 PM

@Blackley: The lad looked nervous. Like I said earlier, he made some important challenges and cleared the ball. He’ll take a bit to get up to speed anyway. He was in good positions so I have no worries for him, at worst he’ll be a useful player.

Yes Perez ain’t quite there, though he was much improved today. Regarding Colo I don’t know if it was a case if weak opposition but he has been top top drawer. Long may that last. Mbemba a bit shaky both games but he doesn’t hide after errors. That’s brave.

Saivet made me nervous. I don’t think he knew where to go. Looked a bit lost. He looked like he was playing in trainers, like he wasn’t get much traction.

    Blackley and Brownlee
The last time we played a team with a big CF was Arsenal – Olivier Giroud is 6′ 4″.
    We lost 1 -0.

    Laurent Koscielny 6′ – 1″ scored a bit of a flukey goal.

go and sit in the corner with your cretinous friend Toonbrother.

All the talk will be of Shelvey (excellent)
Gini (unreal) but Colo was epic (Toonbrother Gutted) and Mitro except for his finishing was unplayable, the ball is like Velcro and he knows how to play.
Hope he starts banging them in.

Saivet wasn’t that bad as some write.. Look at that match again and you can see he made some very good interceptions.. He read the game well off the ball… Shelvey great to watch that player, Wijnaldum looks great, Collo plays very good last matches. Elliot is very good keeper, for me better than Krul…
