Sky Pundit Thinks This Player Too Much For Newcastle Today

12:12 pm, Saturday, January 16th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

When hopes are really high on Tyneside that we can finally get the season going again with a win and with our two new players – Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet – likely to be in the starting the game – Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson thinks the Hammers will still win the game 2-1.

With 60% of our fans thinking we can win this game and that’s a rare high percentage these days – if we do lose it will not be good for anybody associated with Newcastle.

Dimitri Payet – too much for Newcastle?

This is what Paul has said about today’s game and we are up against a team that is 5th top of the Premier League:

“At the moment Newcastle are just not getting the rub of the green. To score three goals and not win at home is disappointing but they are still right in the fight to stay up.”

“I know Sunderland have gone above them but with Swansea getting beat, Newcastle have an excellent chance of staying up.”

“However, I really like what Slaven Bilic is doing at West Ham. Newcastle have to stop Dimitri Payet. If they can find a way to stop him then they will get a result, but if they don’t then he will rip them to absolute shreds.”

“Newcastle are playing well but the problem for them is that I can’t see them stopping Payet. He’s up there with Mesut Ozil in my opinion and he’s 100% the signing of the summer.”

“For West Ham to get him was brilliant. There has got to be a lot of big clubs turning around to their scouting system and asking how he’s not playing for us.“ “I’m going for West Ham to keep their run going with a 2-1 away win and Enner Valencia scoring the first goal.”

Let’s hope Paul is wrong there because if we do lose today it will be four defeats and two draws in the last six league games and in there was another 1-0 defeat at newly promoted Watford in the FA Cup.

That would be two draws and five defeats in our last seven games.

i think it’s foregone that jonjo will start tonight. I really hope to see Saivet start in place of Colback too as he hasn’t been so bad as he has been invisible basically this whole season

  • 2 mattyNUFC // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:18 PM

pretty accurate take on Payet too. We had Anita man-marking him last time and he still did us in. would like to see today (not including back 5 as it’s set in stone)

give thauvin this last chance to do something. i like many weren’t convinced when we signed him but surely he deserves a chance? Gini and perez aren’t producing on the left by any means

  • 3 NezzaNUFC // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:21 PM

I voted lose simply because we always play shit against the lesser teams like ourself but again though IF we keep the performance up we should have no problem

  • 4 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:21 PM

Stuart Broad 5 wickets for 14 runs !!!!!!

  • 5 Grafton83 // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:22 PM

No more Charlie Austin articles, £4m to southampton, I almost feel like Les Ferdinand should apologise to QPR fans for his gross mis handling in his departure, putting a stupid price on his head in the summer only to claw back £4m at xmas shows how badly he tried to over play his hand. Am slightly annoyed we couldn’t get him ourselves, I think he’s a fantastic goal scorer, shame but good luck to him.

  • 6 jazzyp // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:23 PM

Medical and personal terms agreed. Call him all ya want but 4 mill is a snip for Austin

  • 7 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:24 PM

    I hope Shelvey doesn’t start tonight !
The game finishes before 1800 hrs

  • 9 voodoo85 // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:34 PM

Personally not a big fan of Austin and dont think he would really suit our team but 4mil he would have been worth it to give us another option.

Shows how poorly Big Les handled it though during the summer. Could have got more than double that just 4/5 months ago.

Could do well at Soton if Pelle leaves and they have Austin up front with Mane/Long

  • 10 CookyToon // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:34 PM

    2-1 to the toon

    Mitro and shelvey for us

    Valencia for them

  • 11 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:36 PM

    All together now

    “C’mon you Spurs”

  • 12 Ayozeserious // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:37 PM

I see Austin signed with Southampton for 4 million absolute steal.

  • 13 Bambams // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:39 PM

Austin has far too many connections in the South. He has all his family there, his wife is from there and he runs a football team down south so I doubt we ever really had a chance.
Geographically we are always a bit hindered up here, most managers have experienced this – it doesn’t help either we are in the bottom 3 !
    Move on to next ….

  • 14 Rotonda heights // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:41 PM

don’t think sir less has covered himself in glory there as QPR’s MD or whatever role he’s in. That’s a Charnley type gaffe.

  • 15 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:41 PM

Austin to Soton would seem to back up the rumours about Sadio Mané.
    Expect him gone by February.

  • 16 Rotonda heights // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:43 PM

a proper manager like SBR or KK didn’t have a problem attracting people here

  • 17 Rotonda heights // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:44 PM

mane would be amazing for us with his searing pace

  • 18 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:46 PM

The mackems start Jordan Pickford in goal .
    PL debutant
Big Sam to park the bus methinks

  • 19 AncientC // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:49 PM

QPR are only selling because they are not in contention for promotion. They were correct to put a high price on Austin at the time… surely a worthwhile gamble to keep him, or have their arm twisted to sell him.

  • 20 toon kk // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:52 PM

Unfortunately I think West Ham will give us a footballing lesson today, we’ll never cope with Payet.
But hears hoping for a positive result.

  • 21 Essex Geordie Bill // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:53 PM

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Austin flop at Southampton, they are a team who have been punching above the weight and can see them sliding back to the championship in the not too distant future. Not that I care either way about them.

And funny or not I reckon Pelle would be a good buy. He wouldn’t I admit be my first choice as a striker, in the short term Remy would be my preferred option.

And it might well be that we don’t need a new striker if our lot can work out where the goal is especially with the opportunities that should now be on offer from Shelvey and co. A real value two for one offer!!

  • 22 Bambams // Jan 16, 2016 at 12:57 PM

    Retina heights
I recall KK having to tell a few porkies to a certain Rob Lee when he was signed.
I do get at what you mean though fella

  • 23 Grafton83 // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:00 PM

Les was asking for £15m for a player with 12 months left, if it was a deliberate ploy to keep him for his contribution in the championship then that didn’t work either. He should have taken £12m in the summer which was officially offered by both Leicester and Palace. Bad business if you ask me, he failed to see the reality of the situation he was in and now it’s cost them £8m. Oh well, not as bad as us making the same msitake twice with Cabella and Thuavin.

  • 24 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:03 PM

Pardew and Carr managed to attract the captain of Lille OSC the summer after their first ever double and first Ligue1 title since 1954 plus automatic qualification to the group stages of the CL!
This year we managed to attract the captain of PSV Eindhoven after he was Dutch player of the year !

  • 25 JP...from The Rock // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:04 PM

Ed you must be gutted as I am that we didn’t even make a move for your dream signing Charlie flippin Austin!! He has just signed for Southampton for a measly 4m!!!

We could have done with him in our ranks!! Ed you must be fuming or crying in a corner somewhere.

  • 26 magscar // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:05 PM

on the Rob Lee transfer I recall KK telling Rob that Newcastle was closer to London than Boro ( no!) but qualified it later saying he was meaning not distance but travel time i.e Train or plane was quicker (true). It worked whatever and we got one of or best ever players

  • 27 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:06 PM

Big Sam may just have got his tactics right.
    2 defensive lines.
Relying on Defoe’s speed to nick a goal.
Remember that Monday night away to Palace when they “stole” the game.

  • 28 lesh // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:12 PM

I think that Thauvin’s in the squad to make a point to him and Marseille that he’s still our player until terms are agreed for his loan – Ashley’s playing hard ball

  • 29 belgrade fan // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:12 PM

soccer souce – will be interesting too see if Berahino in WBA squad 2night # NUFC

  • 30 lesh // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:15 PM

Austin at £4m? A steal we should we should have had.

Unless there’s a realistic chance of getting a better striker in this window. In saying that, we should have brought one in two weeks ago!

  • 31 archaeomag // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:17 PM

BBC say we’re talking to Spurs about Townsend
    – must be true
    – Still no mention of Austin -sorry ED

  • 32 davetoon // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:17 PM

Gutted about deJongs time here. Injuries and underwhelming play. I really thought he would go on to be a great player for us

  • 33 davetoon // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:21 PM

Is Townsend a better player than Sissoko? No chance

Austin is quite a steal at £4m, 6ft2 proven goal scorer.

Byram at £3m as well, thought we should have been in for him

  • 43 Nufc-83 // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:28 PM

Nezza shelvey can play cam but his natural position is clearly a cm, you play him cam and lose his ability to play long balls as he will be too high up the pitch!!

As for you slating gini playing cam or he won’t score goals that has just shattered any credibility you had. Gini has played cam in the last two games and yes he scored and has looked top class and very dangerous. He has that spot nailed for me and I would be surprised if any Newcastle fan other than you would want to push him back wide as although he had a good goal return games would just pass him by without much involvement.

Wonder if ed still talks about Charlie Austin now he’s joined Southampton for 4 mil

  • 48 Sazzer // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:37 PM

I can’t believe Ed haven’t posted the Austin news yet.

  • 49 Average_Contents // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:42 PM

15 attempts to the scums 3. Wouldn’t be surprised if they perform a smash and grab.

    Much like us I suppose.

  • 50 JackButler // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:42 PM

Austin to Southampton in 4.5 year deal, guess that leaves us looking at the scraps from the French league……….again

  • 51 archaeomag // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:48 PM

ED; looks like Austin still playing hard to get – have to buy him out of his Southampton contract …

  • 52 jimmysmith // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:50 PM

Not a top eight group because of the lack of a genuine striker? That’s a fair comment on current and recent form, but really, we should get plenty of goals out of an attacking group including Mitro, Cisse, Widjnaldum, Perez, De Jong, Shelvey, Townsend, and Sissoko.

I agree though we need a replacement for Cisse, who has been difficult to accommodate, and is hit and miss, and also De Jong and Rivierre have not shown near enough for us, although have done for others in the past.

There’s room for improvement certainly, and I think we will get it, but that is still a pretty impressive array of attacking talent.

On a side note, The Guardian has Saivet and Shelvey starting, and Taylor, Aarons and Riviere fit and on the bench. Payet is a top player, but I think we should beat West Ham at home, and will.

  • 53 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:53 PM

After the Austin scenario if this lot come out with the usual statement 1st feb i.e “we tried very hard to get a quality striker over the line but just failed at the last hurdle” I’m finished with this Club. If we couldn’t offer more than £4M when we had thought of bidding £15M it’s a joke!Looks like Pards will get Adeybayor. So that just leaves Remy who I don’t think will come north again. It therefore looks like stop gap at best. Obafemi Martins from Seattle Sounders, Crouchie from Stoke but the lad I would go for Tom Ince from Derby (in great form too at the moment). Would give us another dimension. Quick, skilful & can chip in with goals.

  • 54 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:55 PM

  • 55 SPRINGY // Jan 16, 2016 at 1:55 PM

rivi scored in a under 21 game and aarons played full 90 mins in the same game so theres a chance they might be on the bench….marveaux also played and scored so he might be on the bench as well…..mbabu injured again apparently
